Hello. Well, Wednesday was a cold day and you know what?

0:00:030:00:05

The next few days aren't looking much warmer at all.

0:00:050:00:09

If you were watching Louise yesterday,

0:00:090:00:11

she was explaining just how chilly the beginning of March has been -

0:00:110:00:14

1st March, the first day of meteorological winter.

0:00:140:00:17

Look how the other three months -

0:00:170:00:19

February, January, December, going back in time -

0:00:190:00:22

how much milder it was.

0:00:220:00:24

So, now that technically Spring -

0:00:240:00:25

from a meteorologist's point of view - has just started,

0:00:250:00:29

it's actually turned quite a bit colder.

0:00:290:00:31

Very dramatic clouds recently as well.

0:00:310:00:34

These mammatus clouds, for example,

0:00:340:00:36

sent in by one of our weather watchers.

0:00:360:00:38

Where has the air been coming from in the last couple of days or so?

0:00:380:00:42

Well, you guessed it - all the way from the Arctic

0:00:420:00:44

and we're going to keep getting shots of cold air

0:00:440:00:46

through the course of the weekend.

0:00:460:00:48

We are on the cold side of the jet stream.

0:00:480:00:50

This is where the cold air sits,

0:00:500:00:52

this is where the milder air sits.

0:00:520:00:55

The good news is that at least on Thursday,

0:00:550:00:57

we're going to be in between weather systems.

0:00:570:01:00

One low-pressure here, another one there,

0:01:000:01:02

we're in this in between bit, so that means

0:01:020:01:04

that the weather isn't going to be that bad at all.

0:01:040:01:07

Most importantly, the winds are going to be lighter,

0:01:070:01:10

so it is going to feel just that little bit less cold.

0:01:100:01:13

But there still are some showers in the forecast,

0:01:130:01:16

possibly some wintry ones, during the course of Thursday -

0:01:160:01:18

particularly across more northern areas of the country.

0:01:180:01:21

Notice that there's another weather front

0:01:210:01:23

that's out there in the Atlantic, ready to come our way.

0:01:230:01:26

And that could prove troublesome as we go through Thursday night

0:01:260:01:30

and also into Friday morning.

0:01:300:01:32

We could see some snow.

0:01:320:01:34

It's still cold enough for some snow,

0:01:340:01:36

particularly across northern parts of England,

0:01:360:01:38

through Wales, the Midlands, possibly East Anglia.

0:01:380:01:41

So, if you're travelling first thing in the morning on Friday,

0:01:410:01:44

just be prepared - there could be some disruption.

0:01:440:01:47

Most of the snow will fall across the hills

0:01:470:01:49

and for many of us, it will be rain and sleet,

0:01:490:01:52

but through the day,

0:01:520:01:53

it will be quite a cold and rotten picture

0:01:530:01:57

for some of us across the southern half of the UK.

0:01:570:02:00

Then comes Saturday.

0:02:000:02:01

That area of low pressure with that weather front

0:02:010:02:04

starts to pull away

0:02:040:02:06

and we see isobars aligning themselves from North to South.

0:02:060:02:09

That means the wind will be coming in from the North as well,

0:02:090:02:12

but with that, further wintry showers anywhere from Scotland,

0:02:120:02:15

eastern parts of England, possibly the Midlands,

0:02:150:02:18

and down into the South.

0:02:180:02:20

Only four, five, six degrees for some of us.

0:02:200:02:22

The same picture happens on Sunday.

0:02:220:02:24

Still those North to South-oriented isobars,

0:02:240:02:27

so chilly winds, but they won't be quite so strong on Sunday

0:02:270:02:30

and I think we'll see fewer wintry showers.

0:02:300:02:32

This sort of situation,

0:02:320:02:33

where we get the wintry showers coming in from the North -

0:02:330:02:36

usually Western areas fare best and we get most of the sunshine.

0:02:360:02:39

But look at these temperatures - four, five, six,

0:02:390:02:42

seven degrees at most.

0:02:420:02:43

Let's have a look at the jet stream.

0:02:430:02:45

Remember, this is the warmer side of the jet stream,

0:02:450:02:48

this is the colder side of the jet stream.

0:02:480:02:50

You just get a sense that we're on that pivoting line,

0:02:500:02:52

that point of transitioning

0:02:520:02:54

to perhaps something slightly milder.

0:02:540:02:57

This high pressure may be a player with our weather

0:02:570:03:00

a little bit later on next week,

0:03:000:03:02

at least the middle part of the week.

0:03:020:03:04

High-pressure starts to build from the Atlantic,

0:03:040:03:08

bringing us settled conditions,

0:03:080:03:10

maybe frosty nights as well.

0:03:100:03:12

It may not last long,

0:03:120:03:13

cos from the latter part of next week,

0:03:130:03:16

that low-pressure from the Atlantic starts to come in,

0:03:160:03:20

bringing us stronger winds.

0:03:200:03:22

Perhaps we'd like something a little bit warmer,

0:03:220:03:24

but at the moment,

0:03:240:03:26

it looks as though that cold weather is here to stay,

0:03:260:03:28

so no change from yesterday.
