If you were watching yesterday, you'll know I gave you a heads up | 0:00:03 | 0:00:06
for a significant change in the weather which we're anticipating | 0:00:06 | 0:00:09
over the week ahead to something a lot drier | 0:00:09 | 0:00:11
and, boy, do we need it, because Wednesday was a washout for some. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:14
Flooding rain, for example, across parts of the Midlands. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:16
This picture taken from a weather watcher in Rutland. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:18
There was some sunshine, though, not a lot, | 0:00:18 | 0:00:21
but thankfully, I think, through the week ahead, there'll be | 0:00:21 | 0:00:24
a lot more of this, than the other, | 0:00:24 | 0:00:26
in prospect as we'll see. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
Still a little bit of rain | 0:00:28 | 0:00:29
across the heart of England on Thursday, | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
but even that will tend to fade away, | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
though this zone through parts | 0:00:33 | 0:00:34
of the Midlands and southern counties | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
and up towards Northumberland | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
will stay rather cloudy. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:39
Now on either side of that | 0:00:39 | 0:00:40
we'll see a better chance of sunshine. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
A lovely day for most of Scotland, | 0:00:42 | 0:00:43
parts of Northern Ireland doing OK | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
and the more western parts of England | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
and West Wales enjoying some sunshine, | 0:00:47 | 0:00:50
certainly a much better day | 0:00:50 | 0:00:51
across parts of the West Country | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
than we saw on Wednesday. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:54
Now, further east we'll have that zone | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
of thicker cloud, the odd spot | 0:00:56 | 0:00:57
of drizzle perhaps still left behind | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
and underneath that cloud | 0:00:59 | 0:01:00
it won't be all that warm, | 0:01:00 | 0:01:01
just 6 degrees, but some sunshine | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
further east for East Anglia | 0:01:03 | 0:01:04
and later the south-east. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:05
On to Friday, then, a nice day again | 0:01:05 | 0:01:07
for some of us, particularly across | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
parts of England and Wales, | 0:01:09 | 0:01:10
though still some stubborn areas of cloud | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
floating around through | 0:01:12 | 0:01:13
the heart of England. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:14
Thickest cloud, though, | 0:01:14 | 0:01:15
through Northern Ireland and Scotland, | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
a weather front bringing some rain | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
to the more north-western areas here. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:20
Now that will push away northwards | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
for a time as we hit | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
the weekend and with high pressure | 0:01:24 | 0:01:25
nestling in across most other places, | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
plenty of dry weather to come. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
So I'm pretty optimistic if you've got plans for this weekend, | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
then we're in good shape. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:33
A lot of dry weather, some sunshine, still quite chilly by night. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:38
Where the sky is clear, we could see touches of frost. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
So here's the picture on Saturday, then, | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
a lot of the dry weather, particularly | 0:01:43 | 0:01:45
across England and Wales. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:46
Northern Ireland and Scotland, | 0:01:46 | 0:01:47
there's a chance of some rain, | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
particularly across the far north-west of Scotland | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
where it will be quite breezy. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:52
Most other places seeing fairly light winds. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
On into Sunday, a similar picture really, | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
a lot of dry weather. | 0:01:57 | 0:01:59
I think the best of any sunshine probably | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
across the more southern and eastern areas. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
Further north, more cloud, | 0:02:03 | 0:02:04
more breeze, but actually | 0:02:04 | 0:02:05
the higher temperatures will be across | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
the more northern areas. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:08
A cool feed coming off | 0:02:08 | 0:02:09
the near continent | 0:02:09 | 0:02:10
and that'll be there on Monday as well. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
Otherwise, weather-wise, plenty of dry weather. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
11 or 12 in the north, | 0:02:16 | 0:02:17
7 or 8 in the south. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
Now I mentioned that feed off the continent. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
It's coming in around that area of high pressure. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:25
These easterly winds, | 0:02:25 | 0:02:26
they'll be most evident across the southern half of the UK. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
Now if you imagine we were in the middle of winter, | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
then this sort of set-up actually would give us | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
some very cold weather, bitter winds coming in off a frozen continent, | 0:02:33 | 0:02:38
but now we're into the early spring, | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
the summer's got a bit more oomph to it | 0:02:40 | 0:02:41
and it's starting to warm up the continent, | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
so those easterly winds are not quite so bitter, | 0:02:43 | 0:02:47
but they'll still feel quite chilly, I think, across more southern areas, | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
whereas further north, the winds will be lighter | 0:02:50 | 0:02:54
and it won't feel quite so cool. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
So that's the set-up through the early part of next week. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
The high pressure there at ground level, | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
but if you were watching yesterday, | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
you will know that I pointed out the fact that that high pressure | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
actually extends all away up through the atmosphere | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
and when you've got high pressure right away up through | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
the atmosphere like this, it tends to be more stubborn. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
It sticks around for longer, which is | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
why I'm fairly confident, actually, that this area of high pressure | 0:03:15 | 0:03:19
will stick around throughout next week, | 0:03:19 | 0:03:20
dominating the weather, | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
giving as plenty of dry conditions, | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
hopefully some sunshine, | 0:03:24 | 0:03:25
but still that coolish breeze | 0:03:25 | 0:03:27
across the south. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:28
That's it. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:29
I'll update you again tomorrow. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:31 |
