Hello there. Well, fans of wet weather should look away now. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
Hopefully I won't lose too many viewers. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:06
The rest of you, if you'd been watching the broadcast | 0:00:06 | 0:00:09
over the last few days, you'll know | 0:00:09 | 0:00:10
I've been promising plenty of dry weather | 0:00:10 | 0:00:12
in the week ahead. Not to start with, | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
for some of us, in fact, | 0:00:14 | 0:00:15
some dampness turning up across parts | 0:00:15 | 0:00:16
of Northern Ireland and western Scotland | 0:00:16 | 0:00:18
during the course of Friday, | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
but for the rest of the UK, | 0:00:20 | 0:00:21
it's a drier prospect. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:22
Here's that patchy rain | 0:00:22 | 0:00:23
pushing into Northern Ireland | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
and western Scotland since the afternoon, | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
but eastern Scotland doing OK | 0:00:27 | 0:00:28
and for England and Wales, | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
broken cloud and after that chilly start | 0:00:30 | 0:00:32
with light winds | 0:00:32 | 0:00:33
and hopefully some sunshine, | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
temperatures will pick up quite nicely, | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
we will be knocking on the door | 0:00:37 | 0:00:38
of double figures in most places. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
So a fine end to the week here | 0:00:40 | 0:00:41
and that fine theme continues | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
into the weekend for the majority. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
Some sunshine, it will feel quite springlike at times, | 0:00:46 | 0:00:49
but it will be a damp start across some northern areas, | 0:00:49 | 0:00:52
courtesy of a set of weather fronts | 0:00:52 | 0:00:53
bringing that patchy rain | 0:00:53 | 0:00:54
which will spread to other parts | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
of Scotland and Northern Ireland | 0:00:56 | 0:00:57
and for a time across the Irish Sea | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
into the likes of Cumbria | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
early on Saturday, no great amounts | 0:01:01 | 0:01:02
but a disappointing start to the weekend, | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
whereas further south | 0:01:04 | 0:01:05
for the bulk of England and Wales, | 0:01:05 | 0:01:07
it will be dry again after a chilly start, | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
hopefully some sunshine. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:10
Light winds in the south, | 0:01:10 | 0:01:11
but quite breezy | 0:01:11 | 0:01:12
for a time further north. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
Temperatures dependent on | 0:01:14 | 0:01:15
how much sunshine you see, | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
but again knocking | 0:01:17 | 0:01:18
on the door of double figures | 0:01:18 | 0:01:19
in the best of any brightness. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
Now as we go through | 0:01:21 | 0:01:22
Saturday night and into Sunday, | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
so these weather fronts start to retreat | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
back northwards again | 0:01:26 | 0:01:27
and take most of the rain with them, | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
so it's a largely dry story on Sunday. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
Getting the amounts of cloud right | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
will not be easy over | 0:01:34 | 0:01:35
the next few days, so bear with us. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
There are detailed variations in the amount of sunshine | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
but hopefully where you are, you'll see some. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
Probably the best of the temperatures, actually, | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
later on this week getting across | 0:01:44 | 0:01:45
northern and western areas, | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
possibly up to the low teens. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:48
Cooler further south | 0:01:48 | 0:01:49
and the reason for that is we're going to | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
start to draw in easterly winds off the near continent. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
If you're watching yesterday, | 0:01:54 | 0:01:55
I mentioned that the continent isn't desperately cold, | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
but it will be quite cool winds | 0:01:58 | 0:01:59
and it will knock the temperatures | 0:01:59 | 0:02:00
on the head, particularly | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
where you've got exposure to that wind, | 0:02:02 | 0:02:03
so, for East Anglia, for example, 6 or 7 degrees, | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
compared to 11 or 12 across parts of Scotland | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
and Northern Ireland, particularly | 0:02:09 | 0:02:10
if we see some brightness. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
Spot the difference, really, on Tuesday. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
We've still got that mostly dry story, | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
we've still got those easterly winds | 0:02:16 | 0:02:18
across the more southern areas | 0:02:18 | 0:02:19
keeping it relatively cool | 0:02:19 | 0:02:20
particularly along that east coast | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
but, again, in some sunshine | 0:02:22 | 0:02:23
it shouldn't feel too bad. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25
Now I'm going to run the sequence through the rest of next week | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
and the thing you'll notice is that high pressure dominates | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
right the way through next week, slap-bang over us at times. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:36
Now, rain is normally generated by the jet stream, | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
so where is the jet stream? | 0:02:39 | 0:02:40
Well, it's way to the north of us for a start. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
It's bringing some outbreaks of rain across parts | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
of Scandinavia later on next week. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
We also have another branch of the jet stream to the south of the UK | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
down across southern parts of Europe and into the Mediterranean. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:55
If you've got friends or family | 0:02:55 | 0:02:56
heading to the Med later on next week, | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
they'll have to take something waterproof | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
because this branch of the jet stream | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
will bring some very disturbed wet and windy weather | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
and also in the mid-Atlantic, | 0:03:04 | 0:03:05
this little kink in the jet stream | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
will generate some wet weather here, | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
but for us closer to home we're well away from the jet stream | 0:03:09 | 0:03:13
and we will remain high and dry, we think, | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
for several days to come, for the next week or so, | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
and perhaps even longer than that. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:20
High pressure in control, plenty of dry weather later next week, | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
some sunshine, but still | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
that chilly breeze | 0:03:24 | 0:03:25
affecting the south. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:26
Sarah will update you | 0:03:26 | 0:03:27
again tomorrow. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29 |
