Hi there. Somebody once said April is the cruellest month. | 0:00:03 | 0:00:06
By the end of this broadcast perhaps you'll begin to understand why. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:09
We started the weekend with a real taste of late winter, | 0:00:09 | 0:00:13
a covering of snow in the Cotswolds and a few other places as well. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:17
But over the next few days, things will start to warm up a bit | 0:00:17 | 0:00:20
and spring will return, | 0:00:20 | 0:00:21
and this could well be the scene by the middle of the week. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:24
It'll feel quite pleasant, I think, | 0:00:24 | 0:00:26
with a lot of dry weather around, and in the sunshine it'll feel OK. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:29
Trouble is, come next weekend we're back to square one again, and who | 0:00:29 | 0:00:33
knows, somebody somewhere could see | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
another covering of snow by then. A lot going on, then. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
We start proceedings with a frost on the ground in many | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
places on Sunday morning. | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
A lot of sunshine, though, and by the time many of us are up, | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
the frost will be lifting and it'll be a nice morning out there. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:49
The odd shower perhaps near the east coast for a time. They'll fade away. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:53
An approaching weather front will bring some patchy rain to the | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
north-west of Scotland, but at the other end of the UK, | 0:00:55 | 0:00:58
it should be dry into the afternoon. | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
Just the chance of the odd shower across some southern | 0:01:00 | 0:01:03
counties of England, but they'll be reasonably isolated | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
and many places will avoid these. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
And the winds will be lighter than on Saturday, | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
so although temperatures won't be all that high, | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
it'll feel a bit more comfortable. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
Clouding up, though, across Northern Ireland | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
and Scotland as that weak front approaches, | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
but any rain is confined to the western Highlands, | 0:01:19 | 0:01:22
and even here it won't amount to much, | 0:01:22 | 0:01:26
Now, that weather front will try to push some rain southwards, | 0:01:26 | 0:01:39
for much of the coming week. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:48
though the nights still will be quite chilly. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:53
and that weather front really has died a death, | 0:01:53 | 0:01:57
There'll be some sunshine, too, with reasonably light winds, | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
temperatures again edging up a little bit, | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
though the nights still quite chilly, as I mentioned. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
By Wednesday, a freshening breeze across southern areas, | 0:02:05 | 0:02:08
lighter winds further north, most places still dry, | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
and again it'll feel quite comfortable out there, | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
if you can get out of the breeze, that is. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
By the middle of the week, | 0:02:16 | 0:02:17
there's a weather system coming up from the south. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
There's a question mark about how far north it gets. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
The threat of some rain for a time across some south-western areas. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
We'll keep an eye on that. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
Certainly it does look as if that breeze will continue to freshen, | 0:02:26 | 0:02:32
Temperatures out of the breeze and in the sunshine will do pretty well, | 0:02:32 | 0:02:36
potentially up into the high teens in one or two | 0:02:36 | 0:02:38
places by Thursday afternoon, so relatively warm at this stage. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:42
However, cold air is ever present to the north, | 0:02:42 | 0:02:50
with a vengeance come the weekend, | 0:02:50 | 0:02:58
So the message is, as we go towards next weekend, | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
we could well see another plunge of cold arctic air between low | 0:03:01 | 0:03:06
pressure to the east and high pressure to the west. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:09
The dominance of the low and the high is still uncertain, | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
but with low pressure in quite close attendance there is | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
the risk of some wintry showers, for sure. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:17
So, to sum up next weekend, it looks like | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
the cold air's going to return, some wintry showers around, | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
the risk of some snow on those blustery winds | 0:03:22 | 0:03:25
and the chance of some further overnight frosts. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:27
Gardeners, take note of that. And I'll update you again tomorrow. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:30 |
