After a rather wintery start to the weekend, | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
things warmed up a little bit on Sunday, but this spring | 0:00:04 | 0:00:06
seems to be a case of one step forward and two steps back | 0:00:06 | 0:00:09
as we'll see in a moment. | 0:00:09 | 0:00:10
Not a bad start to the new working week in most places, | 0:00:10 | 0:00:13
although a weak weather front | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
will topple its way southwards bringing some lightish showers. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:18
Most places, actually, will stay dry with increasing amounts | 0:00:18 | 0:00:21
of sunshine behind that for parts of northern England, | 0:00:21 | 0:00:24
Northern Ireland and Scotland through the second half of the day. | 0:00:24 | 0:00:27
Temperatures - 10 to 12 degrees, typically. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
There will be a blustery wind across the far north of Scotland, | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
making it quite chilly here. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
Fast forward to Tuesday, a touch of frost for Scotland, | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
north-east England, but here the best of the sunshine I think. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
Further south and west, more cloud around. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:43
But, again, just the odd lightish shower. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
Most places will once more stay dry with fairly light winds. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
It should feel pretty pleasant, I think. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
High pressure dominating the weather for the next few days. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:54
More or less, slap bang on top of us. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:55
That's going to keep the rain-bearing weather fronts at bay | 0:00:55 | 0:00:58
for the time being. | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
High pressure, more often than not, translates into dry weather. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:04
So, for the next few days, I'm pretty optimistic | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
that in the sunshine it should feel pretty pleasant. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
Although, overnight, where the skies are clear, | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
it will be quite chilly | 0:01:11 | 0:01:12
with an ongoing risk of a frost in some rural areas. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
Let me show you a chart for Wednesday. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
You can see most places dry, having a nice day. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
Increasingly breezy and cloudy across southern counties. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
But the rain will hold off and again temperatures slowly creeping up. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:28
Mid teens in a good few places. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
From Wednesday into Thursday, we've got to keep our eye | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
on this approaching weather front from the south, | 0:01:32 | 0:01:35
with an increasing chance of some showery rain | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
initially across the more south-western parts of England. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
Again, quite a blustery wind here. Most other places, | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
though, having another fine day with sunshine | 0:01:42 | 0:01:45
and 15, maybe 16 or 17 degrees in the best of the sunshine, | 0:01:45 | 0:01:49
with some shelter from that wind. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
As we go from Thursday into Friday, it does look as if this front | 0:01:51 | 0:01:55
will edge up into southern and perhaps some central parts | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
of England and Wales. | 0:01:57 | 0:01:59
It could end up a wet day here, | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
whereas the further north it stays drier, | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
but the winds beginning to come down from the north | 0:02:03 | 0:02:05
and the temperatures beginning to slide down as well. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:08
That is a sign of things to come. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
As we approach the weekend, this front turns around | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
and heads back southwards again. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
We look to the north, this is an Arctic front, coming down - | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
as the name implies, from the Arctic - | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
turning showers across Scotland to sleet and snow. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
We're going to see another plunge of blue. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
Yes, the blue coming down from the Arctic, | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
and it's all courtesy of a meandering jet stream. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:33
Whenever you get a meander, which sends warm air up over Greenland, | 0:02:33 | 0:02:37
we get a corresponding dip in the jet stream, | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
which sends cold air down across the UK, | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
and it's exactly what we're going to have next weekend. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
That sort of pattern is going to persist into the early | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
part of next week as well. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
And with low pressure in close attendance, | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
that does give the risk of some wintery showers | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
and some of those showers could be quite heavy and possibly prolonged. | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
So, yeah, the risk of some snow is a fairly wintery prospect | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
through the early part of next week. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
Certainly cold, there'll be some wintery showers knocking about. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
Some sunshine, yes, but gardeners take note - | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
some fairly widespread frosts at night. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
Now, how unusual is this for so late in the season, I hear you ask? | 0:03:13 | 0:03:16
Not that unusual. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:18
If you cast your minds back 35 years, | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
blizzards swept across the UK. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:23
I'm not expecting it to get as bad as this, hopefully. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:27
Darren Bett will update you tomorrow. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29 |
