Good news. We are confident about developments up till the weekend.

0:00:030:00:06

A lot of dry weather on the horizon.

0:00:060:00:08

What happens next week is hugely uncertain,

0:00:080:00:10

as we will see in a moment.

0:00:100:00:12

Thundery downpours have blighted some southern parts of the UK

0:00:120:00:14

over the last couple of days

0:00:140:00:15

but that threat diminishes as low pressure eases southwards.

0:00:150:00:18

We look to the north.

0:00:180:00:19

There is a cold front approaching and that will bring chillier

0:00:190:00:23

air to all of us over the next couple of days.

0:00:230:00:25

It is approaching the north of Scotland during

0:00:250:00:27

the course of the day, bringing patchy rain here,

0:00:270:00:29

the odd shower to the south from that low pressure.

0:00:290:00:32

But in between, a lot of fine weather on Thursday,

0:00:320:00:35

with some pleasant sunshine.

0:00:350:00:36

In comes the cold front, bringing cloud and the odd shower

0:00:360:00:39

and pretty low temperatures to Shetland. Just eight degrees.

0:00:390:00:42

Some of the cloud filtering on to north-eastern coasts,

0:00:420:00:44

keeping it cool.

0:00:440:00:46

But most places in the sunshine further west will have a nice

0:00:460:00:49

day, up into the low 20s in a good few places, a marked improvement

0:00:490:00:53

on the last couple of days across southern and central areas.

0:00:530:00:56

Still the odd shower across the south-west

0:00:560:00:58

but they will be isolated compared with recent days.

0:00:580:01:02

Through the evening and night, this cold front heads southwards.

0:01:020:01:05

Not much weather on it, maybe the odd shower but importantly,

0:01:050:01:09

it will introduce notably chillier air through Friday across many

0:01:090:01:12

northern areas.

0:01:120:01:14

By Friday afternoon, some parts of Scotland and north-east

0:01:140:01:16

England will be struggling to get out of single figures.

0:01:160:01:19

One more day of relative warmth further south,

0:01:190:01:22

we might just scrape 19 or even 20 degrees.

0:01:220:01:26

But as we head into night-time, it will turn cold for all of us.

0:01:260:01:30

Some of us on Saturday morning could be waking up to a touch of frost.

0:01:300:01:35

However, I am optimistic that through this weekend,

0:01:350:01:37

a lot of us will see a lot of fine weather

0:01:370:01:39

because high pressure will be building in.

0:01:390:01:42

Although the air is cool, there will be a lot of sunshine.

0:01:420:01:45

A bit of sunshine makes all the difference, doesn't it?

0:01:450:01:47

So for the weekend, to sum up, a lot of dry weather.

0:01:470:01:51

In the sunshine it will feel quite pleasant but a reminder

0:01:510:01:54

those nights will be cold, with an ongoing risk of frost.

0:01:540:01:57

Here's Saturday's picture,

0:01:570:01:59

still that northerly wind going down the east coast.

0:01:590:02:01

You will feel that if you're exposed to that wind.

0:02:010:02:04

In the sunshine, further west,

0:02:040:02:07

14 or 15 degrees actually shouldn't feel too bad.

0:02:070:02:10

More of the same on Sunday.

0:02:100:02:12

We still have that northerly breeze affecting more eastern

0:02:120:02:14

coastal areas so coolest here, warmest

0:02:140:02:16

and sunniest the further south and west you go.

0:02:160:02:20

Not much changing as we start the new working week.

0:02:200:02:22

That northerly breeze is weakening all the time

0:02:220:02:24

so light winds across the country, dry just about nationwide

0:02:240:02:28

and in the sunshine, feeling pretty good.

0:02:280:02:31

It'll feel even better, I think,

0:02:310:02:32

as we go through the next couple of days. A warming trend.

0:02:320:02:35

We lose the blues and we gain the yellows.

0:02:350:02:38

What happens next is very uncertain, as I hinted at the start.

0:02:380:02:42

If you have been watching my broadcasts the last

0:02:420:02:44

couple of days, you will know a lot hinges on this area of low

0:02:440:02:47

pressure developing in the western Atlantic.

0:02:470:02:50

The track of that will be guided by this little kink in the jet stream.

0:02:500:02:55

The exact shape of that kink will be all important.

0:02:550:03:00

Depending on the shape of that kink,

0:03:000:03:02

the low pressure could track its way to the north, it could

0:03:020:03:05

track its way to the south, or it could head straight towards us.

0:03:050:03:10

It does look as if that low pressure will be

0:03:100:03:12

heading in our direction later on next week.

0:03:120:03:15

After a dry start to the week, there is

0:03:150:03:18

an increasing chance of some rain developing from the west.

0:03:180:03:22

But watch this space for details.

0:03:220:03:24

Then it looks as if, as we head into the end of May,

0:03:240:03:26

the weather might begin to settle down and begin to warm up as well.

0:03:260:03:30

We'll update you tomorrow.
