Good news. We are confident about developments up till the weekend. | 0:00:03 | 0:00:06
A lot of dry weather on the horizon. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
What happens next week is hugely uncertain, | 0:00:08 | 0:00:10
as we will see in a moment. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:12
Thundery downpours have blighted some southern parts of the UK | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
over the last couple of days | 0:00:14 | 0:00:15
but that threat diminishes as low pressure eases southwards. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:18
We look to the north. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:19
There is a cold front approaching and that will bring chillier | 0:00:19 | 0:00:23
air to all of us over the next couple of days. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
It is approaching the north of Scotland during | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
the course of the day, bringing patchy rain here, | 0:00:27 | 0:00:29
the odd shower to the south from that low pressure. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:32
But in between, a lot of fine weather on Thursday, | 0:00:32 | 0:00:35
with some pleasant sunshine. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:36
In comes the cold front, bringing cloud and the odd shower | 0:00:36 | 0:00:39
and pretty low temperatures to Shetland. Just eight degrees. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:42
Some of the cloud filtering on to north-eastern coasts, | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
keeping it cool. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
But most places in the sunshine further west will have a nice | 0:00:46 | 0:00:49
day, up into the low 20s in a good few places, a marked improvement | 0:00:49 | 0:00:53
on the last couple of days across southern and central areas. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
Still the odd shower across the south-west | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
but they will be isolated compared with recent days. | 0:00:58 | 0:01:02
Through the evening and night, this cold front heads southwards. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
Not much weather on it, maybe the odd shower but importantly, | 0:01:05 | 0:01:09
it will introduce notably chillier air through Friday across many | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
northern areas. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
By Friday afternoon, some parts of Scotland and north-east | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
England will be struggling to get out of single figures. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
One more day of relative warmth further south, | 0:01:19 | 0:01:22
we might just scrape 19 or even 20 degrees. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:26
But as we head into night-time, it will turn cold for all of us. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:30
Some of us on Saturday morning could be waking up to a touch of frost. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:35
However, I am optimistic that through this weekend, | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
a lot of us will see a lot of fine weather | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
because high pressure will be building in. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
Although the air is cool, there will be a lot of sunshine. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:45
A bit of sunshine makes all the difference, doesn't it? | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
So for the weekend, to sum up, a lot of dry weather. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:51
In the sunshine it will feel quite pleasant but a reminder | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
those nights will be cold, with an ongoing risk of frost. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:57
Here's Saturday's picture, | 0:01:57 | 0:01:59
still that northerly wind going down the east coast. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
You will feel that if you're exposed to that wind. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
In the sunshine, further west, | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
14 or 15 degrees actually shouldn't feel too bad. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
More of the same on Sunday. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
We still have that northerly breeze affecting more eastern | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
coastal areas so coolest here, warmest | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
and sunniest the further south and west you go. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:20
Not much changing as we start the new working week. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
That northerly breeze is weakening all the time | 0:02:22 | 0:02:24
so light winds across the country, dry just about nationwide | 0:02:24 | 0:02:28
and in the sunshine, feeling pretty good. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
It'll feel even better, I think, | 0:02:31 | 0:02:32
as we go through the next couple of days. A warming trend. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
We lose the blues and we gain the yellows. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
What happens next is very uncertain, as I hinted at the start. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:42
If you have been watching my broadcasts the last | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
couple of days, you will know a lot hinges on this area of low | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
pressure developing in the western Atlantic. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
The track of that will be guided by this little kink in the jet stream. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:55
The exact shape of that kink will be all important. | 0:02:55 | 0:03:00
Depending on the shape of that kink, | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
the low pressure could track its way to the north, it could | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
track its way to the south, or it could head straight towards us. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:10
It does look as if that low pressure will be | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
heading in our direction later on next week. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
After a dry start to the week, there is | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
an increasing chance of some rain developing from the west. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:22
But watch this space for details. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
Then it looks as if, as we head into the end of May, | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
the weather might begin to settle down and begin to warm up as well. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:30
We'll update you tomorrow. | 0:03:30 | 0:03:31 |
