25/05/2016 Weather for the Week Ahead

Hello there. We'll have a look at the weather for the holiday weekend

in just a moment, but there are some changes ahead of that.

Now, on Tuesday it was a lovely day for most of us

with some sunshine, but on Wednesday

there'll be a very different look

and feel to the weather.

High-pressure receding to a certain extent

and we've got lowering pressure

over the near continent

that has been developing cloud.

That has been filling in the North Sea

and it's that cloud

heading our way right now

and it's going to be bringing with it

some rain and drizzle across East Anglia,

maybe the North Midlands,

developing in northern England too.

Elsewhere, it's probably going to be dry,

dry across Scotland and Northern Ireland

during the day, but there won't be

as much sunshine and so temperatures

will be lower on Wednesday.

It will feel chilly

along those North Sea coasts in the breeze.

It will feel cold for the time of year

if you're stuck underneath this thickening

and lowering cloud and rain and drizzle.

Through the Midlands towards the south east

with a lot more cloud,

temperatures six degrees lower than Tuesday,

a little sunshine perhaps

for Wales and the south-west,

but probably no more than that.

And through the evening,

we're going to find the rain turning heavier

as it pushes further into northern England,

perhaps into southern Scotland,

eventually across to Northern Ireland.

That will be accompanied by a lot of low cloud

and there'll be some hill fog

around as well.

Not too cold, breaks in the cloud,

though, across the south.

Some sunshine on Sunday for southern England,

developing eventually across much of Wales

into the Midlands.

We're going to hang onto cloud,

and patchy, mostly light rain or drizzle

for northern England, southern Scotland

and Northern Ireland.

The central belt and northern Scotland

perhaps seeing some sunshine,

a bit warmer here

but the real warmth is across the south,

temperatures 20 or 21 degrees

in the sunshine.

And it's a warming trend as we head towards the end of the week.

For northern areas with pressure higher,

it should be largely dry, whereas further south

with the higher temperatures,

we'll see some showers, heavy and thundery.

Bit of a messy picture on Friday,

still some light and patchy rain

across northern England.

Perhaps brighter for Scotland

and Northern Ireland

where it should be largely dry

and a bit warmer.

To the south, some sunshine

and that could again trigger some showers.

It's a very slow-moving weather pattern,

you could say, for the next few days.

Very few isobars on the chart,

so hardly a breath of wind

as we head into Saturday.

You don't need to worry about that big low.

Broadly speaking,

the pressure is high enough

to keep northern parts of the UK dry,

very few showers here.

To the south, we'll see showers developing

and those are most likely

for Wales and the south-west

where they could be heavy and thundery.

Perhaps the showers spread out

a bit more on Sunday,

across southern England,

Wales and the Midlands.

Again, towards the north,

where pressure is higher,

it should be mostly dry.

A little chilly around some of those North Sea coasts perhaps.

Here's a snapshot of Holiday Monday

and high-pressure centred towards the north-west of the UK.

It's keeping most of us actually dry probably on Monday

but there is a big low pressure over the near continent.

It's not far away and in between lots of isobars

so a stronger wind by then.

We're going to keep an eye on this low pressure.

It could get a bit closer to us.

Heading towards the south-east could bring some stronger winds

but also some rain early next week,

maybe some thundery rain around as well.

The position of that low means that

we may be drawing in wind from the east,

so that's going to bring some major temperature differences.

The eastern side of the UK somewhat cooler,

13 degrees or so nearer the coast.

Further west, where we should see some sunshine,

temperatures will be a bit higher

possibly 19 or 20.
