03/06/2016 Weather for the Week Ahead

Hello. The weather in the last few days has been pretty stuck.

We've seen some incredible contrasts

between the east coast and the west coast.

Here's Cornwall, for example.

Beautiful sunshine, very warm, into the 20s.

Glasgow got up to 23 degrees.

The other side of the country,

the North Sea coast - grey, cloudy, cold, windy,

and even in London at lunchtime,

temperatures were between 11 and 13 degrees.

Horrendous for the time of year.

This cloud will stick around

through Friday,

and, if anything, there could be

some thicker cloud and spots of rain

for the eastern side of the UK.

Friday, once again,

big contrasts across the UK.

First thing, there will be

sunshine across western areas -

by the end of the night, lots of clear weather -

but remaining cloudy

across western and central areas.

Beautiful weather for the rush hour

across the Western Isles,

Glasgow, Belfast, the Isle of Man,

all around the Irish Sea

and into Wales,

but a weather front is very close

to that North Sea coast,

and you'll notice spots of rain,

so from Scarborough to Hull, Norwich,

expect some damp weather in the morning,

drizzle and mist. Not very pleasant,

but for Aberystwyth and Plymouth,

the sun will be shining.

There's also a fair bit of cloud

across the Midlands,

central and southern England.

It does look as though

that cloud will fade through the morning,

but on the other hand,

the cloud across eastern areas

is likely to thicken

with that weather front

only very slowly moving across

this part of the country.

Spots of rain from Newcastle to London,

whereas in the west, we've got that sunshine

and temperatures should reach the low 20s

in places. Still chilly on Saturday

on that North Sea coast,

but we're starting to see

that cloud in the east move westwards

and fall apart,

so there'll be more sunshine around.

A few showers developing.

Sunday's a lot warmer,

around 24 in London,

but still cool down that North Sea coast

in that breeze.

Temperatures in Newcastle only around 13,

but already starting to recover

in Norwich, 17 Celsius.

This is the jet stream pattern,

so there's a bit of a dip here,

this is called a trough,

and that arm of the jet stream

moves from a southwesterly direction.

That means it's scooping up

some warm air.

This is the upper atmospheric pattern,

this is lower down. You can see

the wind flowing from the south,

scooping up that air from the southern climes,

so things will be warming up,

so the trend is, at least it's going to stay warm -

low or mid-20s through Monday and Tuesday,

but with this southerly flow of air,

there could be some complications.

When this jet stream tends to

dig even further southwards,

we get "a Spanish plume" -

an area of low pressure forming here

which scoops up thunderstorms

that form across Spain,

and these storms drift in our direction,

so not only could it get hot,

or very warm at the very least,

through the course of next week,

we could even see a threat of storms almost anywhere

across the British Isles.

Let's summarise that, because there is a change on the way

for the whole of next week.

At the very least, it'll remain warm and humid,

a chance of it turning even quite hot,

high 20s are a possibility,

with a risk of some thunderstorms.
