Hello. If you like your summer weather to be warm

0:00:030:00:05

and sunny, you've probably been disappointed with June.

0:00:050:00:08

Let's look at the statistics for the month.

0:00:080:00:10

The provisional statistics, that is.

0:00:100:00:12

It shows, as most of you can guess,

0:00:120:00:13

it's been a duller than average month.

0:00:130:00:15

This map, the grey colours,

0:00:150:00:17

showing where we've seen less than

0:00:170:00:19

the average amount of sunshine.

0:00:190:00:21

Parts of western, southern Scotland

0:00:210:00:23

have seen about the average.

0:00:230:00:24

And Shetland is in yellow.

0:00:240:00:25

Here we've see quite a lot of sunshine during June,

0:00:250:00:28

Shetland one of the driest parts

0:00:280:00:30

of the UK through the month as well.

0:00:300:00:31

This map shows rainfall distribution.

0:00:310:00:33

The bluer colours where we've had

0:00:330:00:35

more than the average,

0:00:350:00:37

significantly more across eastern Scotland,

0:00:370:00:39

East Anglia and south-east England.

0:00:390:00:41

Why so dull and so wet?

0:00:410:00:43

It's all to do with the jet stream,

0:00:430:00:45

that fast-moving ribbon of air high up.

0:00:450:00:47

It has been persistently quite far south,

0:00:470:00:50

driving low-pressure systems across the UK.

0:00:500:00:52

And it's not really shifting too far

0:00:520:00:55

in the coming days.

0:00:550:00:56

Many will see sunshine on Friday,

0:00:560:00:57

but there'll be showers around.

0:00:570:00:59

Bands of heavy showers drifting south

0:00:590:01:01

particularly across northern Britain.

0:01:010:01:03

After a grey start

0:01:030:01:04

across the south-east, East Anglia,

0:01:040:01:05

it may cheer up a bit here.

0:01:050:01:07

We could stay largely dry here

0:01:070:01:08

with 19 or 20 the high.

0:01:080:01:09

But most places seeing heavy, thundery showers

0:01:090:01:12

and temperatures below average

0:01:120:01:14

in the mid to high teens.

0:01:140:01:15

Saturday could start largely dry.

0:01:150:01:17

Again it's another day of sunshine and showers.

0:01:170:01:20

Not many showers south of the Midlands,

0:01:200:01:22

many places here should have

0:01:220:01:23

a fine day on Saturday.

0:01:230:01:24

Perhaps up to 20 Celsius, but many places,

0:01:240:01:27

particularly with the showers and breeze,

0:01:270:01:29

feeling on the cool side

0:01:290:01:30

for the first part of July.

0:01:300:01:32

Low-pressure systems dominating

0:01:320:01:34

to the north of the UK

0:01:340:01:35

and another set of weather fronts approaching.

0:01:350:01:37

These ones not too angry,

0:01:370:01:38

not bringing too much in the way of rain,

0:01:380:01:41

but it will introduce more cloud

0:01:410:01:43

across the South and West

0:01:430:01:45

with outbreaks of rain tracking in

0:01:450:01:46

across southern areas.

0:01:460:01:47

Further north, not as many showers on Sunday,

0:01:470:01:50

so many places will be dry and fine,

0:01:500:01:52

but again temperatures still below average

0:01:520:01:54

even where we see

0:01:540:01:56

some lengthy spells of sunshine.

0:01:560:01:58

Then, for Sunday into Monday,

0:01:580:01:59

those weather fronts get

0:01:590:02:01

their act together a bit more.

0:02:010:02:02

Low pressure continues to dominate.

0:02:020:02:04

Some uncertainty about how far north

0:02:040:02:06

this area of rain will be.

0:02:060:02:08

But it looks as if

0:02:080:02:09

there will be rain for some on Monday.

0:02:090:02:11

To this south, we start to bring

0:02:110:02:13

slightly warmer, humid air

0:02:130:02:15

across the UK. So we could get into the low 20s.

0:02:150:02:18

Signs of things settling down a bit

0:02:180:02:20

as we go into Tuesday.

0:02:200:02:21

Some showers to clear away from the north,

0:02:210:02:23

but with a bit of warmth in the south,

0:02:230:02:26

we could get to 21 or 22.

0:02:260:02:27

This is the set-up into next week.

0:02:270:02:29

Low pressure nearby.

0:02:290:02:30

What we talked about yesterday,

0:02:300:02:32

this ridge of high pressure,

0:02:320:02:34

needs to move its way in.

0:02:340:02:35

The Azores high, for a settled spell of weather,

0:02:350:02:38

needs the bodily move across the UK.

0:02:380:02:40

It does try and push up around the middle part of the week,

0:02:400:02:43

so we could get some fine weather, Tuesday or Wednesday,

0:02:430:02:47

but then it will shrink back south again,

0:02:470:02:49

allowing low-pressure systems to again be close to the UK.

0:02:490:02:52

It may again just try temporarily to push back towards the UK

0:02:520:02:56

later next week. But these are only hints of summer.

0:02:560:03:00

We really need that high pressure to shift fully across the UK

0:03:000:03:03

for any settled spell of weather

0:03:030:03:05

to allow temperatures to start to build.

0:03:050:03:07

And that's only possible if the jet stream moves to the north of the UK.

0:03:070:03:12

But it doesn't look like happening.

0:03:120:03:13

The Jet stream still in a similar position for the first part of July.

0:03:130:03:17

Keeping things pretty unsettled

0:03:170:03:19

generally cool and showery.

0:03:190:03:20

When that high moves up,

0:03:200:03:22

there will be perhaps hints of summer,

0:03:220:03:25

but that's about all we can say at the moment.

0:03:250:03:27

That's all for now. Goodbye.
