27/07/2016 Weather for the Week Ahead

Hello, in broad terms, if you take the UK as a whole,

the summer so far hasn't been too far off the average -

but that disguises a lot of variety

from place to place and from day to day.

We'll keep the variety going,

actually over the next few days.

It was deckchair weather down on the Sussex coast

on Tuesday afternoon - thanks to Robbie

for sending in this picture -

however, over the next couple of days,

this might be a more typical scene.

There's plenty of rain in the forecast.

In fact, it'll be a pretty damp and dismal start to the day

on Wednesday across the southern half of the UK.

Some drizzly outbreaks of rain,

a lot of fog up over the high ground, too.

The best of the brightness further north,

and I think we'll keep with most of the sunshine

across the northern half of the UK throughout the day.

There will be blustery showers across the north-west Highlands,

but further south and east across Scotland,

and for Northern Ireland, and for much of northern England

it's going to be a reasonable day,

with temperatures getting up into the low 20s.

After that, damp start further south.

Things will perk up to some extent,

but watch out for one or two quite heavy, thundery showers developing -

across some central and eastern parts of England

you could see the odd thunderstorm.

Some brightness, hopefully, further west,

across Wales and the south-west.

Now, no sooner do we lose one weather system

then we gain another one coming in off the Atlantic.

No two systems are exactly the same,

but this one's going to do a similar sort of thing - it's going to

send rain, initially, across Northern Ireland,

and then through much of the UK.

The northern extent of that rain still somewhat uncertain,

but certainly for southern Scotland southwards through England and Wales

there will be some wet weather.

Quite muggy across the south -

it could brighten up here, fresher conditions further north.

Now, that low pressure system sails off into the North Sea,

and then we're into a round of north-westerly winds

as we end the week.

Cool winds, so, don't expect a heat wave in the short term,

and those breezes will carry one or two sharp showers around.

Difficult to get the detail of where those showers will be,

bit there'll be some sunshine in between.

A cool feel - high teens, low 20s.

If you can get out of the breeze, it shouldn't feel too bad,

and so that's the way we end the week, those north-westerly breezes

keeping the really warm air out over the near continent.

A cool feed, mostly affecting the more north-western parts of the UK.

You'll notice that breeze.

There'll be some sunshine - if you can avoid the showers,

it shouldn't be too bad,

with the best of the temperatures

across the more southern and eastern areas.

So, here's Saturday's picture -

again, don't take the position of the blobs of blue too literally -

there will be showers scattered around,

but there'll be some lengthy dry spells in between.

Temperatures struggling -

and watch out for some fairly cool nights, as well.

Down to single figures, I think, through this weekend,

where the skies remain clear.

Day - it's a similar picture, really.

Still that north-westerly breeze,

temperatures quite subdued, and there'll be a few showers

scattered around, but plenty of dry and bright weather, as well.

So, if you're heading to the beach this weekend,

you need to get away from that breeze,

and it's the more southern and eastern resorts

best favoured with some shelter from that

breeze, and it should feel quite pleasantly warm in the sunshine.

Now, through next week, if you were watching yesterday,

I mentioned the high pressure settling things down briefly

before low pressure arrives to the north-west,

and areas closest to that low pressure

will catch most of the wind and the rain -

drier to the south and east.

I also mentioned the small chance

of some really warm air wafting up from the south.

I've reduced that to a very small chance, now,

but I haven't discarded it entirely -

there's still a very small chance that that could happen,

and the computer models

will continue to firm up on that possibility

over the next few days,

but certainly it does look as if

we will continue to see the wettest weather

across the north-west with some blustery winds,

dry conditions across the south-east,

so, yes, we'll continue to keep an eye open

for the possibility of some heat coming up from the south.
