27/07/2016 Weather for the Week Ahead

Hello there. As we get into August

it looks like the weather might become more energised -

stay tuned to the end of the broadcast

to see exactly what I mean by that.

At the moment, though, things are quite placid, nothing too extreme -

we do have a weather system pushing in off the Atlantic,

but there's not much energy wrapped up in that.

It does mean, though, a spell of rain -

welcome rain, in actual fact,

for those gardens that have been parched over recent weeks -

initially across the more western parts of the UK,

and that rain will be spreading across much of the country

through the day,

the northern half of Scotland probably avoiding most of the rain -

some brightness here, and the odd shower -

but elsewhere we will see some dampness

at some stage through the day.

I mentioned the north of Scotland, yes, sunshine holding on here,

though some showers across the far north.

Roughly south of the central belt, though,

it stays grey and pretty damp into the afternoon -

this is four o'clock,

and pretty dreary for Northern Ireland, as well.

Disappointingly cool.

Now, further south through northern England

and into Wales and the Midlands,

I think things will start to brighten up

through the afternoon.

So, too, for the south-west, and if that does happen,

we could see one or two showers developing

as that rain clears away from the more eastern counties.

Quite a muggy one again in the south.

Now, as we go through the night and on into Friday,

this sort of residual band of showery rain

will start to head its way southwards,

so a fair bit of cloud and some showers,

at least for a time,

across more central and southern parts of the UK on Friday.

Brightening up behind, here, we'll see plenty of sunshine -

a fresh feeling day across northern areas.

One more day of humidity across the south.

But, as this front clears away,

we'll push that humidity out of the way, as well.

We'll be into a run of north-westerly winds

as we get in to the weekend,

and that keeps that really warm air at bay.

Cooler conditions feeding in on that north-westerly.

Not desperately cold,

but a fresh feeling weekend for all of us.

So, let's sum things up -

we'll all see some sunshine, that's good news.

A few showers for the gardens,

and you will notice the nights, actually,

will be turning quite chilly - chillier than in recent nights.

So, for Saturday, a scattering of showers around,

but as you can see, a lot of dry weather -

in fact, some of the best of the sunshine

could be around the coastal fringe -

good news if you're heading to the beach.

Temperatures not spectacular - high teens, low 20s.

After a chilly night,

Sunday gives us more of the same, really.

The showers won't be in exactly the same place -

they'll be dotted around, and, again,

there'll be plenty of dry and bright weather in between.

Once more, high teens, low 20s.

Now, into next week, into August,

we start to look to the Atlantic for our weather.

There are systems lining up to come in,

but I think, on Monday itself,

a little ridge of high pressure will persist.

Most of the showers will have faded away by then,

and blustery wind easing away from the far north-east.

So, a pleasant day for most of us.

Again, not spectacularly warm, but in the sunshine,

it should feel very nice indeed.

Now, then, let's go stateside,

because here we've got

a bit of a heat wave at the moment -

temperatures getting into the hundreds of Fahrenheit

in recent days, and that hot weather

is going to persist into next week, as well.

The heat isn't going to come directly towards us,

but it will be a factor in our weather,

because as it pushes into the Atlantic

it's going to supercharge the jet stream, I think.

A tight gradient between cold to the north and warmth to the south,

and it's going to speed up the jet

and lead to some quite rapidly developing areas of low pressure

on that jet stream,

and some of those could affect the far north-west of Scotland

with some very strong winds.

Certainly across these more north-western part of the UK,

closest to low pressure, I'm expecting the wettest weather

as we go through the early part of August.

Furthest away from that, we have a lesser risk of gales,

some drier weather and some warmer weather across the south-east.

a fairly energetic look to the weather charts

for the early part of August.
