Hello there. As we get into August | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
it looks like the weather might become more energised - | 0:00:04 | 0:00:06
stay tuned to the end of the broadcast | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
to see exactly what I mean by that. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:09
At the moment, though, things are quite placid, nothing too extreme - | 0:00:09 | 0:00:12
we do have a weather system pushing in off the Atlantic, | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
but there's not much energy wrapped up in that. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:16
It does mean, though, a spell of rain - | 0:00:16 | 0:00:18
welcome rain, in actual fact, | 0:00:18 | 0:00:19
for those gardens that have been parched over recent weeks - | 0:00:19 | 0:00:22
initially across the more western parts of the UK, | 0:00:22 | 0:00:24
and that rain will be spreading across much of the country | 0:00:24 | 0:00:27
through the day, | 0:00:27 | 0:00:28
the northern half of Scotland probably avoiding most of the rain - | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
some brightness here, and the odd shower - | 0:00:31 | 0:00:32
but elsewhere we will see some dampness | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
at some stage through the day. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
I mentioned the north of Scotland, yes, sunshine holding on here, | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
though some showers across the far north. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
Roughly south of the central belt, though, | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
it stays grey and pretty damp into the afternoon - | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
this is four o'clock, | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
and pretty dreary for Northern Ireland, as well. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
Disappointingly cool. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:49
Now, further south through northern England | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
and into Wales and the Midlands, | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
I think things will start to brighten up | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
through the afternoon. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:56
So, too, for the south-west, and if that does happen, | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
we could see one or two showers developing | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
as that rain clears away from the more eastern counties. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
Quite a muggy one again in the south. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
Now, as we go through the night and on into Friday, | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
this sort of residual band of showery rain | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
will start to head its way southwards, | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
so a fair bit of cloud and some showers, | 0:01:11 | 0:01:13
at least for a time, | 0:01:13 | 0:01:14
across more central and southern parts of the UK on Friday. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
Brightening up behind, here, we'll see plenty of sunshine - | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
a fresh feeling day across northern areas. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
One more day of humidity across the south. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:25
But, as this front clears away, | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
we'll push that humidity out of the way, as well. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
We'll be into a run of north-westerly winds | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
as we get in to the weekend, | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
and that keeps that really warm air at bay. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
Cooler conditions feeding in on that north-westerly. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
Not desperately cold, | 0:01:39 | 0:01:40
but a fresh feeling weekend for all of us. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
So, let's sum things up - | 0:01:43 | 0:01:44
we'll all see some sunshine, that's good news. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
A few showers for the gardens, | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
and you will notice the nights, actually, | 0:01:48 | 0:01:50
will be turning quite chilly - chillier than in recent nights. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
So, for Saturday, a scattering of showers around, | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
but as you can see, a lot of dry weather - | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
in fact, some of the best of the sunshine | 0:01:57 | 0:01:59
could be around the coastal fringe - | 0:01:59 | 0:02:00
good news if you're heading to the beach. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
Temperatures not spectacular - high teens, low 20s. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
After a chilly night, | 0:02:05 | 0:02:06
Sunday gives us more of the same, really. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:08
The showers won't be in exactly the same place - | 0:02:08 | 0:02:10
they'll be dotted around, and, again, | 0:02:10 | 0:02:11
there'll be plenty of dry and bright weather in between. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
Once more, high teens, low 20s. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
Now, into next week, into August, | 0:02:16 | 0:02:18
we start to look to the Atlantic for our weather. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
There are systems lining up to come in, | 0:02:21 | 0:02:22
but I think, on Monday itself, | 0:02:22 | 0:02:24
a little ridge of high pressure will persist. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
Most of the showers will have faded away by then, | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
and blustery wind easing away from the far north-east. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
So, a pleasant day for most of us. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
Again, not spectacularly warm, but in the sunshine, | 0:02:33 | 0:02:36
it should feel very nice indeed. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:38
Now, then, let's go stateside, | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
because here we've got | 0:02:40 | 0:02:41
a bit of a heat wave at the moment - | 0:02:41 | 0:02:42
temperatures getting into the hundreds of Fahrenheit | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
in recent days, and that hot weather | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
is going to persist into next week, as well. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
The heat isn't going to come directly towards us, | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
but it will be a factor in our weather, | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
because as it pushes into the Atlantic | 0:02:53 | 0:02:54
it's going to supercharge the jet stream, I think. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
A tight gradient between cold to the north and warmth to the south, | 0:02:57 | 0:02:59
and it's going to speed up the jet | 0:02:59 | 0:03:01
and lead to some quite rapidly developing areas of low pressure | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
on that jet stream, | 0:03:04 | 0:03:05
and some of those could affect the far north-west of Scotland | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
with some very strong winds. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:09
Certainly across these more north-western part of the UK, | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
closest to low pressure, I'm expecting the wettest weather | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
as we go through the early part of August. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
Furthest away from that, we have a lesser risk of gales, | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
some drier weather and some warmer weather across the south-east. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:24
As I mentioned at the start, | 0:03:24 | 0:03:25
a fairly energetic look to the weather charts | 0:03:25 | 0:03:27
for the early part of August. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:28
Sarah will update you tomorrow. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:29 |
