09/08/2016 Weather for the Week Ahead

Hello. Fed up with that cool breeze?

Well, if you are a fan of warm weather,

I may have a treat for you,

because although it wasn't on the menu a few days ago,

it now does look as if we are

going to get some really warm air

pumping up towards us

come the early part of next week.

That's a complete transformation

from what we have got at the moment

- cool north-westerly winds,

and certainly there is a nip in that breeze.

We start Tuesday with temperatures

well down, widely in single figures,

as low as three or four degrees

across the glens of Scotland.

Chilly start, but some sunshine

should soon warm things up.

There will be some blue sky

and sunshine through the morning,

but already some showers across

parts of northern England, and in general,

the showers will turn more widespread across

northern parts of the UK.

Best of the brightness further south.

Now, the focus of the showers by mid-afternoon -

this is four o'clock -

will be from parts of south-west Scotland across

the borders into parts of north-east England.

Fairly frequent and sharp showers here,

serving to keep those temperatures down,

so mid-teens - disappointing.

Further south, it will be drier,

brighter, some sunshine,

particularly for parts of

South Wales, the Midlands, East Anglia,

and certainly southern counties.

Up into the low 20s in places, and in general,

the winds won't be as blustery

as they were on Monday.

Looking further ahead then,

Tuesday night into Wednesday,

we have got this whole string of

weather fronts coming down

from the north-west

and across the country,

so there will be a fair bit of cloud

around on Wednesday, particularly out west,

with some sporadic outbreaks of rain

drifting southwards on the breeze.

The best of any brightness across

eastern parts of the country,

but in general, with a lot of cloud

in the sky after a chilly start,

temperatures are going to struggle.

Quite a cool-feeling day, mid to high teens,

possibly the low 20s, and the best

of the sunshine across the south-east.

Fast forward to Thursday

and another set of fronts,

this time targeting the north-west of the UK,

particularly in the west of Scotland.

We could see quite a lot

of rain through Thursday and into Friday,

we will have to keep an eye on that.

Pretty wet and windy here.

By and large, the further south

we go, it will be drier, brighter, warmer too.

The first hints of that warmth

developing actually across

some southern counties, possibly up into

the low, maybe mid, twenties.

Friday, that rain is still there,

pummeling the west of Scotland.

As I say, will have to keep an eye

on that, quite a lot of rain.

Once more, it will be drier,

brighter and warmer

the further south and east we go.

24, possibly 25 degrees.

This weather front, this cold front,

tries to stagger its way south-eastwards

as we hit the weekend, but it's a weakening feature.

Just a band of cloud and little more

then just the odd spot of rain.

On either side of that,

plenty of dry weather to start

the weekend, and again,

the only sunshine across the south-east.

It will feel pretty warm, a bit fresher behind that

weather front across the north and west,

but the winds will be fairly light.

That weather front really dying a death,

not much on it,

and the reason for that is because

it is kind of detached from the jet stream.

The jet stream looks like

pushing back northwards

to the north of the UK,

and that is going to

cause that significant change

in weather as we go to the early part

of next week, because, as we get a dome

in the jet stream,

we're going to start to

draw in those warm

or even hot south-easterly winds.

And there is every chance

that some places

by the early part of next week

could be hitting 30 degrees -

too hot for some, I know.

So the message is,

a hot spell, albeit brief perhaps,

thunderstorms increasingly likely

and it could turn cooler

again by the end of the week.
