12/12/2016 Weather for the Week Ahead

Hello. High pressure and the positioning of high pressure

will have a big part to play in our weather for the next ten days.

For the next five days or so,

high pressure is just to the east of the UK.

What does that mean?

It means that we're going to find sunshine in short supply,

a lot of cloud around over the course of the week.

It'll be wettest in the west.

This is where we'll see weather fronts arriving.

Southerly wind, though, will be picking up.

It's going to bring mild air once again.

Bit chilly still on Monday,

especially across some eastern areas.

Temperatures very slow to rise,

although it should be on the dry side.

We've got this drizzly rain coming up

from south-west Wales, up into the Midlands,

eventually all the way to north-west England

and south-west Scotland.

That's drawing in some milder air

and lifting the morning mist and fog as well,

but chilly where it stays dry in eastern Scotland

and eastern England.

Here we could see a little bit of rain and drizzle,

towards the end of the afternoon

and into the evening, probably.

You can see how damp it looks overnight.

That will turn to push away.

Then a gap where we see some more patches of fog

before some more rain comes again

into the south-west and Wales.

Most of this rain will be light.

It should be largely dry

for Scotland and Northern Ireland.

This is where we'll see the lowest temperatures,

maybe a pinch of frost in the countryside.

A couple of weak weather fronts on the scene on Tuesday.

Something more substantial waiting in the wings

out in the Atlantic.

Focus on these two, first of all.

That one's moving away,

taking the rain and drizzle with it.

This one will take some damper weather

eastwards across England.

The rain and drizzle then petering out,

but we're left a lot of cloud.

Maybe a little bit misty and murky.

A glimmer of sunshine here and there

as things improve in Wales and the south-west,

and possibly for Scotland and Northern Ireland

where temperatures are just about

getting into double figures.

Highs of 13, though, in the south-east.

Then that more substantial weather front

arriving in from the Atlantic.

All our weather is coming in from the Atlantic,

but it's moving in very slowly.

It's bumping into that blocking area

of high pressure that's to the east of us.

So this is why western areas

are seeing most of the rain.

That's certainly going to be the case on Wednesday.

We're going to find Northern Ireland,

Scotland just bordering

into western fringes of England and Wales,

that's where we've got the rain.

Central and eastern areas still dry.

Still pretty cloudy, I suspect.

That first weather front just sort of weakens in situ.

A bigger, deeper area of low pressure approaches,

looks pretty scary.

The winds are going to strengthen.

It's a southerly wind.

We're drawing up some milder air all the time.

This first weather front just peters out,

not much rain on that.

Again, dry towards the south-east.

Then the more substantial rain.

The next one comes into Northern Ireland

and Western Scotland.

But that too tends to run out of energy.

It runs out of motion,

it decelerates across the UK,

so it gets stuck here.

Again, dry towards the south-east.

Some slightly cooler air, though,

just arriving into the north-west,

just for a while.

So we've got this band of rain, a weather front.

That, again, will weaken,

cos we're talking about high pressure, remember.

Whilst we've got a big one out over continental Europe,

we've got high pressure, initially, building up

from the south-west,

bringing with it some mild air.

Still drying things out all the while.

Eventually, though, it's going to be the high pressure,

probably from the near continent,

that will extend and join forces to settle things down.

Areas of low pressure getting steered to the north-west of the UK.

So here, now and again, in the outlook,

there may be a little rain from some weather fronts,

but on the whole, things are settling down.

As the continental high becomes more established,

it may turn a bit colder later on.

Maybe, if the cloud breaks, there's a risk of some frost and some fog.
