Hello, thanks for joining me. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:03
We've been forecasting colder weather for the last few days. | 0:00:03 | 0:00:05
Here's a quick summary from midweek onwards. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:07
You can't hang about for the next three and a half minutes. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
A cold easterly wind setting in from tomorrow onwards, | 0:00:10 | 0:00:13
particularly across eastern parts of the UK. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
It will be pretty cloudy, | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
and maybe the first few flakes of snow arriving. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:21
Here's the rest of the forecast. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:23
So, into the early hours of Wednesday. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
That weather front is still affecting eastern parts of the UK. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:29
It was here a couple of days ago. Swept across the UK. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:33
We had that awful rain early in the week and the gales. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:36
Early on Wednesday, it's still very close to our shores | 0:00:36 | 0:00:40
and it can't move any further eastwards | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
because of those easterly winds setting in. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
So, through the early hours of Wednesday, | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
remaining pretty cloudy across many eastern areas of the UK. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:50
Little spits and spots of rain. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:51
But through Wednesday across the west, actually, | 0:00:51 | 0:00:54
we've got some sunshine on the way. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:55
So here, the weather isn't too cold. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:57
You can see some of the winds here are still coming in from the south, | 0:00:57 | 0:01:00
just about across Northern Ireland, so temperatures of 7 in Belfast, | 0:01:00 | 0:01:04
but only 3 degrees, if that, in Norwich. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
And across the North Sea, we're starting to see a few flurries | 0:01:06 | 0:01:10
brought in by that easterly wind. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
Now, Wednesday night into Thursday is going to be a cold one, | 0:01:12 | 0:01:16
So first thing in the morning on Thursday | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
a real nip in the air across the UK. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
This is what it looks like on Thursday from space. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
This is the jet stream. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
It's diving southwards and then northwards. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
No weather fronts pushing through. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
Big area of high pressure across this part of the planet. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:33
And this is that blocking weather, that blocking high pressure here. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:37
These winds here are closer to the ground. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
So we had the upper-level winds of the jet stream earlier on. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
These are the easterly winds | 0:01:43 | 0:01:44
just, say, ten metres above the ground or so. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
And they will be pushing in some flurries of snow | 0:01:47 | 0:01:51
across eastern areas of the UK. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:52
Now, the thinking is | 0:01:52 | 0:01:54
probably the north-east of England, through Yorkshire, | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
maybe Lincolnshire, | 0:01:56 | 0:01:57
there might be a few flakes or so through the Midlands, | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
but notice that the temperatures are now | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
also starting to drop across western areas as well. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
Only 5 degrees. By Friday, that wind is a lot colder. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:08
That high pressure is shooting those winds in our direction | 0:02:08 | 0:02:12
and, again, it's these eastern counties here, | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
certainly across the Pennines, | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
I think a good chance of at least a dusting of snow here and there. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:20
And briefly during the day | 0:02:20 | 0:02:21
temperatures will be getting up to maybe 2 or 3 degrees. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
And at most I think we could see scenes like this, | 0:02:24 | 0:02:28
particularly across the hills, | 0:02:28 | 0:02:29
and not exclusively across the hills. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
Now, Saturday, something interesting happens. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
Yes, we've got the high pressure and the easterlies, | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
but this little baby area of low pressure develops. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
That basically means clouds develop, deeper clouds, | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
more potential for some rain and possibly some snow. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:46
But also the winds will be dragged a little bit from the south, | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
so I think come Saturday, Sunday, | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
perhaps a slight rise in the temperature | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
and rather than just snow, | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
it could be a little bit of rain and snow mixing in | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
across those eastern counties. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:00
But having said that, we still have to be prepared for some pure snow | 0:03:00 | 0:03:04
at least through the rest of the weekend | 0:03:04 | 0:03:06
and possibly into next week as well. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:08
Now, next week, broadly speaking, | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
this is still pretty much the weather map. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:14
Still the high pressure, still the easterly winds, | 0:03:14 | 0:03:16
but there is a hint that later on next week, | 0:03:16 | 0:03:19
rather than winds coming in from the east, | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
they'll be coming in perhaps from the south or the south-east, | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
so it could just about turn less cold. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
But until then, let's be prepared for a little cold snap. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28 |
