Wimbledon 2017

For new viewers it's 0-30, now it's 30-30. Fognini breaking at the start

of the second set. Faded away rather dramatically at the end of the

first. Now beginning to display the kind of talents that we know he's

got. He didn't waste a whole lot of

energy in the first set. The word discipline not usually associated

with Fognini. That shot choice there...

Just a stretch too far. Now it's Murray with break point.

If there ever was a doubt, his hip is fine.

They don't like you doing that on the grass. UMPIRE: Warning, Mr

Fognini. There's a way to do this... He's got the record. He was fined

?21,000 three years ago for unsportsmanlike conduct and a verbal

obscenity and he threatened to smash a racket on the face of Wayne

McEwan, one of the officials. That wouldn't have been good! It makes

John McEnroe looks like a saint! There was a moment two years ago

where if he'd got another fine he would have been suspended for quite

a long time. All of a sudden he started to behave much better. This

was obviously a crucial break for Murray. Fognini was settling in a

bit with a break ahead. Break himself.

It's tough when you're playing two people. Your opponent, and your own

head. It's a crucial time in the match,

Fognini is on the ropes. Emotionally, that is.

I get the feeling he lives on the ropes! It's not too often that he

hasn't got a lot of things going through that head. He's the nicest

guy of the court, he's charming. Then something changes when he puts

on tennis shoes and gets a tennis racket.

Murray's righted the rungs. From a break down, he goes to- one up. --

righted the wrongs. . SUE BARKER: we are staying with the tennis on BBC

feeling a lot easier. Obviously when you're playing someone like Fognini,

he can go on a tear up winning 34 games very quickly. He has in the

past but you've got to stick with it mentally. Murray is one of the best

ever at keeping his focus and intensity high, particularly here.

We talked a couple of months ago, in the past Fognini had a horrible

record. He felt so much pressure to do well in his home country that he

many times lost in the first round. He didn't follow that up with a

particularly good result after beating Murray. That's why he's

ranked where he is because he had an opportunity to really get himself in

this match and he just threw it away, gave it back to him, let him

seize control. Not to mention he got the crowd grumbling against him.

Murray knows this is an important time. Obviously he's a very good

match player, he's always observing the other side. He can tell that

Fognini is wobbling. Things are conspiring against him.

He looked up but Bacall confirmed. -- Bacall was confirmed. I don't

serve and volley anyway, how can they call me for a footfall?

That was a risky second serve. 100 miles an hour, it could have gone

anywhere. Life on the ropes. We know the name of his book if he writes

one! I want to see him play shots like

this one. Go back behind them, see that he's off-balance, solid volley,

not go to big on it. If he wants to keep playing he's got to show some

more discipline out there. First ace for the Italian. It makes

in so unpredictable because you never know what's going to come at

you. I don't think he knows at times!

Murray was complaining about his foot speed there.

He's challenging. I'm not sure he's going to get anything out of it.

It's his third double. UMPIRE: Mr Murray has one challenge remaining.

You don't know what to expect shot to shot with this guy. It can

unsettle you. First serve percentage is way down

in the second set. It's fantastic. He's so flat-footed

when he plays it, but it's a shot of genius. The slice forehand is the

one I like. He worked hard to get load to that ball, set himself up

for this. An impossible angle. No chance for Murray to retrieve that.

Two break points. That's what he needs.

Not by much. He's only got one challenge left so he's got to be

careful. I'm not sure what happened there!

But it didn't look pretty and Fognini goes in front again.

Strange. That drives you crazy. You want him to self-destruct but you

can't really relax against this guy. He can come up with something

special. There's something about the vibe that your feeling on the other

side that makes it difficult to really be able to do your thing the

way you want to. I feel there's a lot of nervous tension in that

second set for both players. They have a history with H other, they've

known each other since they were 14. Murray a bit edgy right now. If you

aren't forced errors. We shouldn't forget he hasn't had the greatest of

years either. He doesn't come into Wimbledon having won a couple of

tournaments. He didn't. He battled hard in the French. We haven't seen

his A-game that often. I've always got the feeling with Fognini, I may

be playing the number one player in the world on his home patch, but a

five play well I'm going to beat him. But I have to play well. It

could be Federer, Djokovic, Rafa. It's tough to do that throughout a

best of five set match. If your concentration lapses, you've seen

even in this one, but here he is back in the mix.

Murray's form has dipped. It did. Just missing some of the points he

made in the first set. Once he went to the one hand and

kept it, Fognini correctly started to move forward. Not a particularly

high percentage shot. He's flying right now, Fognini. But

for how long? Pointing up the court for a bounce

earlier on. I think both players would rather lose on the ground

strokes! Taking their time in little bit to

play the next one. Fognini called it out. I'm not so

sure whether he still believes that. He was chancing it, wasn't he?

Someone said no chalk blew up. The semifinal in Miami, that was

really as good as it got. He beat Nishikori. He was having his results

on hard courts. You mentioned the Fognini results. I

don't think Murray is on top of his game as I said earlier. It's more a

case of him dropping his level, letting Fognini back in. I wonder

how much Fognini has even played on grass courts leading up to this.

Knowing him a little bit, not an awful lot.

You just don't know what's coming next. And in his notes, and he might

have said that. But there are going to be times like this. It's just

dealing with it. Limiting the damage but there's

still been plenty so far in the second set.

the statistics on Fognini, you might think he won't win too many

tournaments, he is only one for, but that he would be very good against

hasn't moved! He loves they pose. What took him so long? LAUGHTER Look

how long he stays in this pose. Out by one millimetre, but he knew that.

New balls, please. Murray will have to serve to stay in the second set.

Here he goes again, Fognini. Driving another opponent crazy.

Again, the court not to his liking. It's like asking Michelangelo to

come in and paint your walls. He wants everything perfect.

He succeeded in unnerving Murray whose level has clearly dropped.

Murray holds and let's see what Fognini is made of, serving for the

set. Boris, he knows Murray is going to be after him here if he gets an

opportunity. Serving for the set is always difficult. Tensions rise. In

this particular situation Fognini has the chance to level out the

match. Murray will look at every opportunity he gets. Just to make

him hit another ball. Career high of 13 in the world. If he plays at his

best, even against the defending champion... He's not dictating as

many points as he'd like to and that is causing some headaches here.

Fognini has gone big. CHEERING

The crowd know this is important, they've raised the noise level a

little bit. Accompanied how well he's hitting

locked in battle. One set all against a very talented Italian.

There is the gesture that greeted the winning of the second set.

Fognini went off for a call of nature and has just come back. He

will be pretty happy with that. A lot of good to end the set and make

with the real competitive match. The crowd is tensing up. Fognini loving

it. When he loves it, there is danger.

If you were coaching him and you were able to get in his ear, what

would you be seeing? Stick with it. This first couple of games it is

important not to go behind again. Try to hold your serve-mac. Finally

to win the points. If only it were that easy. You are

going to see him trying to influence the crowd. That extra five or 10%

can come in handy. He has to make this guy earning every point. Just

one baseline winner from Murray. That is what he is looking for,

Murray. It does not have to be brilliant. Have to switch to

momentum a little bird. Be a little more proactive as well. Not just

reacting to what Fognini is doing. No man's land, no --, could not

command the opening. Not good enough.

He is upping the intensity. Fognini not able to latch onto the second is

three. A big game. You picked it. You said he had to up

the intensity and that is what he has done. He understands what it

takes, that is why he has won this. When I was working with me last year

could see how he understood what the advantage was of engaging the crowd.

It can only help. At first you thought when it was

30-30 and Fognini miss the retirement with him being

frustrated. I think he was surprised he reacted that way.

Fognini is challenging the call. The ball was called out. A strange call

to challenge so early. Throwing one away. Fognini has two challenges

remaining. Brutal. I do not think we are going to be

talking about the fact that Fognini seems to be serving better than

Murray. Certainly as this match has gone on.

Latching onto every opportunity to encourage Murray, the crowd.

He is serving pretty well, Fognini. Yes, but Murray, the returns, too

many unforced errors, giving away points to quickly.

Murray has also only been at the net a total of seven times. It seems

that with his touch and feel around the net he should get more

aggressive. Not serve and volley but worked his way? Yes. He is allowing

Fognini to dictate most of these points. Wonderful sleight of hand.

Just like that. That was a tough shot to hit. Really difficult shots.

Fognini went to the net 17 times and Murray eight times.

Great serving from Murray. The crowd responding. Something happened to

Fognini. His right leg I believe, he appears to be in some pain. As he

walks to the chair. I do not know if you will get a replay of that move

he made. A little bit lame. He is flexing his ankle. It may be an

ankle problem. I have not heard him ask for the trainer. Much as

everyone wants, or practically everyone here, wants Murray to win,

this is building up to a really good contest. Cannot see anything here.

He starts flexing and looking notably more uncomfortable. A few

seconds earlier. The right ankle, I think it is. No trainer and no

request for a trainer. Should not underestimate the Italian community

in London, there is a lot of Italians in London and they will

support their man. You might have to wait for service.

Always represent Italy in the Davis Cup. Played the Olympics. Sorry for

the problems we have with vision. Maybe something is off. With his

feet. Fognini is challenging the call. He

is stuck with that ankle as if it is betraying him. Just as it was

starting to look so good for Fognini, complications. As bad a

challenge as we have seen in the tournament. Perhaps just to give him

some time. Lucky. Fognini has two challenges

remaining. If it is a problem, I do not understand why he has not asked

for the trainer. He did not move forward berth, he

hesitated. Not feeling comfortable at the moment. In trouble. We have a

is 15-40, two break points for Marray. Something about the first

served. I wish I spoke Italian. Looked pretty good moving there.

That is a shot you would have been proud of. It is a lot more difficult

than he made it look. Still break points. Let. First service.

There is the break. You can see the court is chewed up back there. It is

pre-1. We understand that Fognini has asked for the trainer at the

next change of ends. There are also psychologists

available. Fognini is so difficult to read

because he has been like this in earlier in the match and then he

suddenly fires up. Murray has risen his intensity. He knows what is at

stake in the third set. A real match player. He likes the competition, he

gets better with it. I think he has accepted a fight. Let. First

service. Yes! 119 out wide. Murray into

double figures on aces. A point away from a 4-1 lead.

Murray is 4-1 up and we await the trainer on Centre Court for Fabio

Fognini so it is going to be a little bit of delay until play

resumes. There is the trainer. He has made his way to look at the

ankle. . To we can show you what is happening elsewhere. Jo-Wilfried

the United States. That looks as if it is going to be heading for a

Yes. You have to keep warm and keep at it and keep your focus. Easier

said than done. Looked to be something to do with the Achilles.

The back area. See if they can tape it up and pressure on the trainer,

get it right the first time, the first and only time presumably.

Seeing what this guy has to offer, if he can handle the pain. He does

not seem to have been given anything. That will take 15 or 20

minutes to kick in. He relies on his speed. He has got some excellent

wheels. At the moment he looks to be in some big trouble. Yes, the

feeling from Murray will be one of relief because it looks as if it

could get nasty there after the second set. He is not walking well,

Murray, but that has been the case all week. We saw it last week in

practice. When he is walking... Remember Ken rose water, he looked

tired and he got to the finals of Wimbledon. Once he gets on the move

he is fine. In his first round match, wobbly, and once the point

started he was perfectly fine and afterwards he said, maybe I have a

funny walk! Maybe that is just what it is. Murray having a walkabout but

giving a long look at Fabio Fognini. The injury time-out coming to an

end. He is putting his sock back on. One thing for Murray to keep agile,

to keep warm, it should not be hard to keep warm. Sometimes if you wait

1015 minutes everything changes, especially if you sit down. He has

not done that. He is only a single break down.

Murray racing to the other side. In the mood now.

Fognini is challenging the call. The ball was called out. It can't have

been too far away. The call stands. Three break points for a set in

break and surely the set. Fognini has one challenge remaining.

It is difficult to know how effective he is in his movement

because he did not move. It is a roller-coaster when you watch

Fognini. It is unfortunate. He seemed to be getting his act

together and playing with confidence and it has all gone. Ending this set

like he did the first. Good from Murray. Takes the stress out of this

set. One less thing to worry about. He is getting no luck either. We

will wait and see what he does early in the four. Hope he does more of

the same. Murray playing much faster, much

more intensity. Focused. Murray is challenging. Again, it looked close.

It was definitely close. It could have caught the back of the line. It

stands. Murray has one challenge remaining. Waiting for married to

stop that -- start throwing in some drop shots. We anticipate that will

happen in the fourth set. Set point. Yeah the end of the third set very

like the end of the first. Murray leads two sets to one. I think the

large section of the crowd is as relieved as Murray is. JOHN MCENROE:

It's literally just what the doctor ordered. Murray did exactly the

right thing, upped his intensity level, as he needed to do. Showed

some fight and looked to engage the crowd. Turned out he didn't have to.

BORIS BECKER: That affects the opponent. He wants to raise

everything he can, including the crowd. It's affecting you and

Fognini is struggling with that. Sure the ankle may hurt a little

bit, but mostly it's the fans of Murray and the whole situation got

to him a little. He's played well enough and done enough good things.

He wants to be able to show people what he's made of. You see the

summary, 76% first serves. That tells you the story. Second set, his

first serve disappeared for a little bit.

Murray out there very quickly before time was called. Again, that's a

signal to the opponent, "I'm ready. I'm going to get you now." An

important game this one. Let's see what Fognini's got in the locker.

Anything he's got now needs to come out here.

Champagne never hurt nobody on a Friday evening. One lady having a

seemed to be moving OK there. Seemed to be moving very well. Except for

figure out what's going on. The other side, Murray one of the

great defensive players. Of any era. Oh, yes. You can see his confidence

growing, the movement improving. Trying to intimidate, as well he

should at this stage. CHEERING

I don't see any limitations with Fognini now.

That's a glorious shot. Murray didn't do enough with that backhand.

He was just bunting it back pretty much. Letting Fognini dictate all

At most he gets a first serve. An unusual challenge.

There's life left in this match that's for sure. He's not ready to

lie down yet is Fabio Fognini. You get the feeling that Fognini has got

another trick or two up his sleeve. Centre Court of Wimbledon maybe he

doesn't feel like he would be here again. You've got to dig deep in the

well mentally. I think you're right, John. Yeah, he hasn't shown us

nearly all the tricks. Sprinting pretty well during the

point and lipping over to the chair. Murray's pretty good at that

himself. Tennis players have got to be act actors at times! We can't let

everybody know how we feel. This is a stage and we want to entertain.

CHEERING You always looked super confident

Boris, but I expect there were moments when you weren't. Trust me,

I didn't feel like it all the time. It's just part of the job.

Ultimately you want to win, you want to win the last point, but there are

many ways to get there. Fognini really taking chances now.

Stepping on the baseline, taking the ball early.

Missed that serve by a mile. Stress is returning to the Murray box and

the crowd. The crowd sensing it. Murray giving a couple of comments

to his box. Fognini doesn't want to associate

himself with that shot. A sea of nerves, start utilising the drop

shot, trying to force Fognini forward and out of his comfort zone.

Get him to run. See if he's got the will to do that.

If he serves like that, he may not have to worry.

He's served pretty well when he's had to.

Not in the second set. Getting Fognini on the move. There

wanted to pick it up, but this man did. Fognini is going to have a

quietened him down. It's brewing. Something is going to come out

finger. So it was a visible obscenity. That's what I thought he

said. I think I picked tup, but I'm not

going to say it. Again Murray gets the luck.

Fognini gets the apology, but he'd rather have the luck.

His talent is being tested right now.

That ankle was tested there. Doesn't look like the ankle's a problem!

In case you heard, the audible obscenity, which we're not sure was

uttered, we apologise. Apparently it was a heck of a tape

job! He seems to be moving freely now, that is for sure.

Always been one heck of a shot maker. How cool was he there,

Fognini? This match is on fire now. It's lighting up beautifully on a

Friday night. That's why all these fans come to

Wimbledon to see spectacle! UMPIRE: Mr Fognini is challenging

the call on the right service line. The ball was called fault. He's got

a couple of challenges left. He's going to lose another one here? Yes.

He's got to be careful, in all sorts of ways.

CHEERING I was going to say - you should know

better than anyone, John, but in Melbourne that time, you got it

wrong. First drop shot just wasn't good at

all. He got lucky here. What a match, what an atmosphere we

have here. SUE BARKER: It's got everything on

Centre Court at the moment, hasn't it? If you are tuning in expecting

2. There are a lot of staunch patriates

here, but I think Fognini has got a portion of the crowd with him. They

love his antics. Not that they want him to win. They

just love watching him. I tell you one thing, he's got easy

power and he makes it look effortless. He lulls you into this

sort of exchange with those slices then he just rips the ball. You

loved that Boris? Beautiful shot making. Without much effort.

If he moved his feet, he might have made it. I'll let you two tell him.

Nah. Don't let us two get in the middle of it.

He called a fault. He is being challenged.

Huge relief. Second serve return miss on break point. That could be

costly. Wrong shot, what do you think? Well,

it's easy to be the back seat driver. I expected this to happen

sooner, more often to test him earlier in the set. Stressful

moments. You haven't tried it really the entire match. Wrong shot.

A round about way of putting it. -- putting it.

UMPIRE: Mr Murray is challenging the call. He's challenging but surely

that was long. That is stress.

So unlike Murray. He normally deals with these situations so well. Does

he? How often is he in these situations? I mean, don't forget

their head-to-head is three all. He's taking like 20 minutes...

COMMENTATOR: He's asking for him to be - Getting testy out there. Get

the stop watch going, he's saying. SUE BARKER: If you are tuning in for

It was a lot of fun, it has been a lot of fun for the two hours and ten

minutes. Now the crowd are getting anxious. And the players. So is

Murray. Looks like his touch has gone.

Hopefully only temporarily. Fognini holds to love. It is 5-2.

It's gotten totally bizarre out there. It's hard to make it up. It's

almost you feel like it was a strategy that he went away in the

third set, looked like he wasn't moving at all. Didn't know what he

could do or how badly injured or his mental, what percentage, no-one

knew. Then all of a sudden he goes out there and he just seems to be

toying with Murray's head at the moment. It got to him. Exactly. It

really affected him. He lost his temper there a little bit. He

complained to the umpire that Fognini is taking too long to serve.

He's in a dog fight now. That is why he is a Wimbledon

champion. The sun is setting. Is it setting on his Wimbledon in 2017 in

he needs to regroup. UMPIRE: Time. It is still light

enough to see. If that goes into the fifth set, they might have to close

the roof and put some lights on. That is true. It is a possibility.

What, 45 minutes to an hour down the road? A lot can happen in that

period of time. Yes. And we are showing this -- sure

in this match a lot will happen. Seven doubles, usual for Murray to

serve that many. Great return! And it sets upset

point for Fabio Fognini. Set point for Fabio Fognini.

Murray's movement is starting to look a bit more awkward. I don't

know if that hip, if it is starting to play up now, there are moments

when he does look in pain. It is more a mental thing. Even more

so the first serve of Murray is key right now.

The Italian does it with style right now. He is feeling it right now. I

tell you who is loving being on Centre Court and it's not Murray.

Still orchestrating the whole thing. He has them on the edge of their

feet. What can he do next? His physical trainer, is he looking

closely at the movement of Murray? Other than the first serve Murray

has no other way of getting any free points.

It is Fognini dictating. A lot of the time.

The Roman emperor, doing his stuff. Set point to take us into a fifth

set. It was called out. Is he going to

cadge it? Yes, he is going to challenge it. He wasn't sure if it

was the crowd that called it out, but there was a line judge who also

called out. The linesman called it in and the umpire overruled. Oh

right. Out it was. And now, Fognini is out of

challenges. Up advantage Murray.
