Taking a band like us back to the place we grew up in has a bit more resonance

0:00:150:00:19

because a lot of other bands are thrown together

0:00:190:00:23

or they've come from different towns or cities countries even.

0:00:230:00:27

Whereas, with us, we all grew up in and around Blackwood. The place,

0:00:270:00:33

in effect, shaped us.

0:00:330:00:37

In a career spanning three decades, ten hit albums and over six million record sales,

0:00:420:00:47

the Manic Street Preaches are Wales's most legendary rock'n'roll ambassadors.

0:00:470:00:53

Controversy, tragedy, politics

0:00:530:00:55

and pop fanaticism have all played a part in the Manics' phenomenal success.

0:00:550:01:00

The band haven't performed in their home town for nearly 25 years until now.

0:01:000:01:06

Invited by BBC Radio Two's In Concert to play the historic Miners' Institute,

0:01:060:01:12

the mighty Manics took us back to Blackwood.

0:01:120:01:16

January 2011 and the band arrive home in Blackwood

0:01:260:01:30

for a manic day packed with interviews and photo shoots

0:01:300:01:34

even finding time to give DJ Jo Whiley a whistle-stop tour of their old haunts.

0:01:340:01:38

Going back to Blackwood and playing the Institute seems like a challenge.

0:01:380:01:44

There is an element of seeing if you can reconnect to the past.

0:01:440:01:49

There's emotional resonance there. There's definitely lots of nostalgia.

0:01:490:01:53

The thing you feel most is a bit of fear, I think.

0:01:530:01:55

There's bound to be someone there

0:01:550:01:57

who I played football with who's going to shout

0:01:570:02:00

"Shirley" my nickname, straight away.

0:02:000:02:02

JAMES: And someone's going to shout out at least one of my 15 nicknames.

0:02:140:02:16

Tonight, they return to the place that earlier on today,

0:02:160:02:19

Nicky Wire described as his inspirational home.

0:02:190:02:23

Here, in Blackwood, it is the Manic Street Preachers!

CHEERING

0:02:270:02:28

-NICKY:

-For me, the small gigs are the really scary ones.

0:02:280:02:32

It's much easier to play the bliss

0:02:320:02:34

of euphoria of mass communication at something like the Millennium

0:02:340:02:38

when we've done that. That's much less nerve-racking

0:02:380:02:40

than seeing 200 extremely hardcore fans in front of you.

0:02:400:02:45

Motorcycle Emptiness.

CHEERING

0:08:280:08:31

Hello, Blackwood.

0:08:340:08:36

The Manic Street Preachers last gig in Blackwood, some 25 years ago,

0:08:400:08:44

wasn't quite such an auspicious occasion.

0:08:440:08:47

Last time we played there was in a little theatre supporting Funeral In Berlin.

0:08:470:08:53

They were a top Blackwood goth band at the time.

0:08:530:08:56

It turned into a stage invasion and riot.

0:08:560:09:01

Some of the footage has appeared on YouTube over the last couple of weeks.

0:09:010:09:05

You can see us dodging cans and people just wandering on stage

0:09:050:09:11

and trying to deck us.

0:09:110:09:14

We were scared witless and Shaun was on two drums like Bobby Gillespie

0:09:140:09:17

and we did a brilliant version of Just Like Honey,

0:09:170:09:20

God Save The Queen by the Pistols.

0:09:200:09:22

I think we did Teenage Kicks.

0:09:220:09:24

I had "I am sex" written on my chest.

0:09:240:09:26

The nipples cut out of my jumper. Complete misplaced confidence.

0:09:260:09:30

You can see our manager sitting behind the amps and people were chucking cans at the stage.

0:09:300:09:36

He shakes them...

0:09:360:09:38

To see if there's anything left.

0:09:380:09:40

..to see if there's anything in there and he goes...

0:09:400:09:43

Huh!

0:09:550:09:57

Come on.

0:10:120:10:14

# To feel forgiveness You gotta forgive

0:10:170:10:21

# Do you see the stars or the darkness begin?

0:10:210:10:24

# You fight your war I fought for my life

0:10:240:10:28

# You pay your dues and I'll pay mine

0:10:280:10:31

# It's not war

0:10:310:10:33

# Just the end of love

0:10:330:10:36

# Just like before

0:10:370:10:40

# But it's never enough

0:10:400:10:43

# Oh, it's never enough, oh

0:10:430:10:47

# You fight your war I fight for my life

0:10:540:10:58

# You pay your dues and I won't pay mine

0:10:580:11:01

# To feel forgiveness you gotta forgive

0:11:010:11:05

# It's lost on me I believe in revenge

0:11:050:11:08

# It's not war

0:11:080:11:11

# Just the end of love

0:11:110:11:13

# You've got the looks

0:11:150:11:18

# But I've got the stars

0:11:180:11:20

# It's not war

0:11:210:11:25

# Just the end of love

0:11:250:11:27

# To feel some tenderness

0:11:270:11:32

# Do you have to give up?

0:11:320:11:35

# Why do you have to give up?

0:11:350:11:38

# Do you have to give up?

0:11:380:11:41

# It's not war

0:12:110:12:14

# Just the end of love

0:12:140:12:17

# Just like before

0:12:170:12:21

# But it's never enough

0:12:210:12:23

# It's not war

0:12:240:12:28

# Just the end of love

0:12:280:12:31

# You weathered the storm

0:12:310:12:35

# But sheltered the loss

0:12:350:12:38

# But sheltered the loss

0:12:380:12:41

# But sheltered the loss. #

0:12:410:12:45

CHEERING

0:13:010:13:03

Thank you very much.

0:13:030:13:05

As soon as I think about Blackwood when we were 16 or 17,

0:13:110:13:15

I think about the places that we used to go and meet up.

0:13:150:13:19

There was Louie's Cafe. There was the Square Cafe.

0:13:190:13:22

That was our stamping ground.

0:13:220:13:24

We used to roll round the place

0:13:240:13:26

and perhaps sometimes challenge people to beat us up

0:13:260:13:29

just by the way we were looking.

0:13:290:13:31

If there's one song that epitomises our time walking round Blackwood

0:13:310:13:36

in our tight white jeans and our leather jackets, it was Suicide Alley,

0:13:360:13:40

which is our first ever single, which we printed ourselves,

0:13:400:13:43

the photograph of which is quite close to the studio, in an alley

0:13:430:13:47

on the opposite side,

0:13:470:13:49

and we literally haven't played that song for 22, 24 years now.

0:13:490:13:54

CHEERING

0:13:540:13:56

# I'm going down to suicide alley

0:13:570:14:01

# Cos the air I breathe

0:14:010:14:04

# Tastes better down there Hey hey hey, yeah

0:14:040:14:08

# I'm going down to suicide alley

0:14:080:14:14

# Cos it seems as if As if it's the only place for me

0:14:140:14:18

Come on!

0:14:190:14:20

# And I'm going down to suicide alley

0:14:310:14:34

# Where you can't get at me

0:14:340:14:37

# And I'm going down to suicide alley

0:14:370:14:40

# Where I can be what I want to be

0:14:400:14:42

# I'm going down to suicide alley

0:14:580:15:02

# Cos the air I breathe

0:15:020:15:05

# Tastes better down there Yeah, hey, hey, hey

0:15:050:15:09

# I'm going down to suicide alley

0:15:090:15:14

# Cos it seems as if

0:15:140:15:17

# As if it's the only place for me Wey hey

0:15:170:15:19

# I'm going down to suicide alley

0:15:320:15:34

# Where you can't get at me

0:15:340:15:37

# And I'm going down to suicide alley

0:15:370:15:39

# Where I can be what I want to be

0:15:390:15:42

# You won't eat away at my mind

0:15:550:15:58

# With your ideas of decency

0:15:580:16:01

# I'll be in suicide alley

0:16:010:16:03

# Being who and what I want to be

0:16:030:16:06

# You won't eat away at my mind

0:16:060:16:08

# With your ideas of decency

0:16:080:16:12

# I'll be in suicide alley

0:16:120:16:15

# Being who and what I want to be. #

0:16:150:16:17

Two, three, four!

0:16:190:16:20

CHEERING AND WHISTLING

0:16:360:16:39

The band's Blackwood background has played a massive role

0:16:420:16:45

in their music and identity,

0:16:450:16:47

but in the early days the constraints of a small community

0:16:470:16:50

left the young Manics with a love-hate attitude towards their hometown.

0:16:500:16:54

Most bands start out trying to escape where they've come from.

0:16:540:16:58

We were no different.

0:16:580:16:59

At the start we were desperate to escape what we thought...

0:16:590:17:02

was a cultural/industrial vacuum.

0:17:020:17:06

But the obvious thing happened.

0:17:060:17:08

As soon as you started touring,

0:17:080:17:10

I was going back home all the time.

0:17:100:17:12

I wanted to get back all the time.

0:17:120:17:14

-Up until The Holy Bible, anyway.

-I never left anyway.

0:17:140:17:17

In typically Welsh fashion, all I did was move to Wattsville five miles down the road.

0:17:170:17:21

I finally made it to Newport when I hit the peak time.

0:17:210:17:24

Again, in a typical Welsh way,

0:17:240:17:27

-James and Sean would always say they were from Pontllanfraith anyway!

-THEY LAUGH

0:17:270:17:32

A mile's a long way in the valley.

0:17:320:17:36

Growing up in the '80s,

0:17:360:17:38

the Manics had a long way to go to get hold of the music they were after.

0:17:380:17:41

Now, when an instant music fix is just a click of a mouse away,

0:17:410:17:44

they feel nostalgia for the way they consumed music.

0:17:440:17:49

Coming to Cardiff on the train,

0:17:500:17:51

busking, literally to buy a Wimpy hamburger

0:17:510:17:55

and then buy a 7" from Spillers,

0:17:550:17:57

was just totally magical.

0:17:570:17:59

The excitement of getting the NME every week

0:17:590:18:01

and Melody Maker and Sounds.

0:18:010:18:04

It's also a simple explanation as to why a lot of music we got so excited about,

0:18:040:18:08

and why we coveted it so much when we finally got it.

0:18:080:18:11

You'd gone through a mini battle to get it.

0:18:110:18:14

You'd sent off a postal order, or you'd taken a bus journey,

0:18:140:18:17

and you'd saved up.

0:18:170:18:18

And by the time you got it, it just seemed so important.

0:18:180:18:21

It seemed as if there was some kind of sacrifice involved in getting this music.

0:18:210:18:25

By the time you put it on the turntable, the build-up was so gigantic

0:18:250:18:28

that it meant something more.

0:18:280:18:30

One, two, three, four...

0:18:300:18:32

# Drinking

0:18:480:18:51

# Water to stay thin

0:18:510:18:53

# Or is it to purify

0:18:550:18:57

# I love you all the same

0:18:570:19:01

# But there's no

0:19:040:19:06

# Stole the sun from my heart

0:19:220:19:28

# Same. #

0:22:310:22:34

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:22:340:22:37

The Manics have always been masters of imagery

0:22:460:22:48

and the art of controversial TV performances.

0:22:480:22:51

But at times, this has led some to question their genuineness.

0:22:510:22:55

We weren't what you'd call a classically authentic band

0:22:550:22:58

because it's all about ideas, you know.

0:22:580:23:01

The fact that me and Richey didn't really care about the music,

0:23:010:23:04

but we were obsessed with words and image

0:23:040:23:07

and just the way we looked as a band.

0:23:070:23:09

We were a very kind of odd marriage, the four of us.

0:23:090:23:14

# I am an architect

0:23:140:23:17

# They call me a butcher... #

0:23:170:23:19

Intentionally or not, the bands ideas have frequently caused a stir

0:23:190:23:24

often as a result of their blistering Top Of The Pops appearances.

0:23:240:23:28

I remember when you first Tipp-Exed James across the front of it in the dressing room.

0:23:280:23:35

There was some kind of notion of subversive power

0:23:350:23:38

looking like a cross between a terrorist and a rapist, but subversive.

0:23:380:23:42

Or, kind of like, special forces.

0:23:420:23:44

I didn't think about how it might really, really offend some people.

0:23:440:23:47

I think it was one of the record amount of calls Top Of The Pops ever got.

0:23:470:23:51

-It seems completely tame now.

-It does.

-Post Christina Aguilera.

0:23:510:23:55

-It's not that horrendous.

-Imagine what Lady Gaga could do with a balaclava.

She could really rock it.

0:27:020:27:05

We come from Blackwood, South Wales.

0:27:060:27:09

We're here to rock and roll!

0:27:100:27:13

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:27:130:27:16

This is off Everything Must Go, this is called Enola/Alone.

0:27:180:27:22

# The Statue of Liberty looks so solemn on the TV

0:27:410:27:48

# 100% risk of stepping outside

0:27:480:27:51

# Every second too precious to try

0:27:510:27:54

# My heart aches for Enola

0:27:550:27:58

# From my birth a relic a killer

0:27:580:28:02

# But all I want to do is live

0:28:020:28:05

# No matter how miserable it is

0:28:050:28:08

# Please sing to me a song

0:28:110:28:15

# Enola alone

0:28:190:28:22

# Please take me on home

0:28:250:28:29

# Enola alone

# I walk in the grass and I feel some peace at last

0:28:480:28:55

# I walk on the beach and for once I feel some ease

# I'll take a picture of you to remember how good you looked

0:29:020:29:09

# Like a memory it has disappeared Naked and lonely

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:31:040:31:06

In 1995, the band suffered a devastating personal and professional blow

0:31:140:31:18

caused by the tragic disappearance of their friend and fellow band member Richey Edwards.

0:31:180:31:23

Some 16 years later, it's clear that his presence is still very much missed.

0:31:230:31:30

As you know, anyone who's seen us over the last 10-15 years, there's always a gap

0:31:300:31:35

to our right side, which will never ever be replaced.

0:31:350:31:38

-This song...

-CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:31:380:31:42

Em, this song is dedicated

0:31:420:31:44

to the boy and the man who filled that space so exquisitely,

0:31:440:31:49

so intelligently

0:31:490:31:51

and so damn full of rock and roll.

0:31:510:31:53

It is for the genius of Mr Richard Edwards.

0:31:530:31:57

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:31:570:32:00

Faster!

0:32:000:32:01

# I am an architect

0:32:140:32:16

# They call me a butcher

0:32:170:32:19

# I am a pioneer

0:32:210:32:24

# They call me primitive

0:32:240:32:26

# I am purity

0:32:270:32:29

# They call me perverted

0:32:300:32:32

# Holding you but I only miss these things when they leave

0:32:340:32:37

# I am idiot drug hive, the virgin The tattered and the torn

0:32:400:32:45

# Life is for the cold made warm and they are just lizards

0:32:460:32:50

# Self-disgust is self-obsession Honey

0:32:520:32:56

# And I do as I please

0:32:560:32:57

# A morality obedient

0:32:590:33:02

# Only to the cleansed repented

0:33:020:33:05

# I am stronger than Mensa

0:33:050:33:10

# Miller and Mailer I spat out Plath and Pinter

0:33:110:33:16

# I am all the things that you regret

0:33:220:33:27

# A truth that washes That learned how to spell

0:33:270:33:32

# The first time you see yourself

0:33:440:33:47

# Naked you cry

0:33:470:33:49

# Soft skin now acne

0:33:510:33:53

# Foul breath, so broken

0:33:540:33:56

# He loves me truly

0:33:570:33:59

# This mute solitude I'm draining

0:34:000:34:02

# I know I believe in nothing

0:34:040:34:05

# But this is my nothing

0:34:050:34:07

# Sleep can't hide the thoughts spinning through my mind

0:34:100:34:15

# False mirrors are too clean Too many people awake

0:34:160:34:21

# If you stand up like a nail then you will be knocked down

0:34:230:34:26

# I've been too honest with myself I should have

0:34:290:34:32

# Lied like everybody else

0:34:320:34:35

# I am stronger than Mensa

0:34:350:34:40

# Miller and Mailer I spat out Plath and Pinter

0:34:410:34:46

# I am all the things that you regret

0:34:520:34:56

# A truth that washes That learned how to spell

0:34:560:35:03

# So damn easy to cave in

0:35:210:35:24

# Man kills everything

0:35:240:35:26

# So damn easy to cave in

0:35:270:35:30

# Man kills everything

0:35:300:35:33

# So damn easy to cave in

0:35:330:35:37

# Man kills everything

0:35:370:35:40

# So damn easy to cave in

0:35:400:35:43

# Man kills everything. #

0:35:430:35:47

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:35:470:35:51

Without Richey, it was unclear whether Manic Street Preachers would even carry on,

0:35:550:36:00

but with the release of Everything Must Go in 1996

0:36:000:36:03

came their greatest success.

0:36:030:36:05

We had quite low expectations, obviously,

0:36:050:36:08

after Richey's disappearance.

0:36:080:36:09

The way we talked to each other was...

0:36:090:36:12

you know, if we could do 100,000 albums on this and just kind of keep together

0:36:120:36:17

and we made a great record, that'd be brilliant. We were...

0:36:170:36:20

You know, but the fact then it went on to sell way over a million

0:36:200:36:23

in the UK alone...

0:36:230:36:24

The thing we were doing post Design For Life

0:36:240:36:27

was the stages that we were supposed to be on et cetera, et cetera.

0:36:270:36:30

Obviously that was post Richey going missing, so everything was a tiny bit bittersweet as well.

0:36:300:36:37

# The future teaches you to be alone

0:36:570:37:01

# The present to be afraid and cold

0:37:010:37:04

# So if I can shoot rabbits

0:37:060:37:07

# Then I can shoot fascists

0:37:070:37:11

# Bullets for your brain today

0:37:160:37:20

# But we'll forget it all again

0:37:200:37:23

# Monuments put from pen to paper

0:37:240:37:26

# Turns me into a gutless wonder

0:37:260:37:31

# If you tolerate this

0:37:340:37:36

# Then your children will be next

0:37:360:37:39

# If you tolerate this

0:37:430:37:45

# Then your children will be next

0:37:450:37:47

# Will be next, will be next

0:37:470:37:49

# Will be next

0:37:490:37:52

# Gravity keeps my head down

0:38:020:38:05

# Or is it maybe shame

0:38:060:38:08

# At being so young and being so vain

0:38:100:38:15

# Holes in your head today

0:38:200:38:24

# But I'm a pacifist

0:38:240:38:27

# I've walked Las Ramblas

0:38:290:38:31

# But not with real intent

0:38:310:38:34

# If you tolerate this

0:38:370:38:40

# Then your children will be next

0:38:400:38:43

# If you tolerate this

0:38:460:38:49

# Then your children will be next

0:38:490:38:52

# Will be next, will be next

0:38:520:38:54

# Will be next

0:38:540:38:56

# And on the street tonight an old man plays

0:39:130:39:18

# With newspaper cuttings of his glory days

0:39:210:39:28

# If you tolerate this

0:39:300:39:32

# Then your children will be next

0:39:320:39:36

# If you tolerate this

0:39:390:39:41

# Then your children will be next

0:39:410:39:44

# Will be next, will be next

0:39:440:39:46

# Will be next

0:39:460:39:48

# Ahhh, ahhh

0:40:040:40:07

# Whoa... #

0:40:070:40:09

Come on!

0:40:090:40:10

# Whoa-oh, whoa-oh

0:40:120:40:19

# Whoa-oh, whoa-oh

0:40:210:40:27

# Whoa-oh, whoa-oh

0:40:290:40:34

# Whoa. #

0:40:340:40:37

APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:40:460:40:50

I don't think I ever have a sense of, you know,

0:40:590:41:03

where we sit in the landscape of pop or rock history and all that malarkey,

0:41:030:41:08

because a band only ever truly understands itself if you can say you've influenced another band.

0:41:080:41:13

If you've influenced another band that's had lots of success.

0:41:130:41:16

I don't think we've ever influenced anybody.

0:41:160:41:18

I think we're thee second best band ever, from Wales.

0:41:180:41:21

# If you want it Here it is

0:41:210:41:24

# Come and get it...#

0:41:240:41:26

I think Badfinger are the greatest ever Welsh band.

0:41:260:41:29

I'm pretty sure we're the second best.

0:41:310:41:33

I'm not getting into that one.

0:41:330:41:35

# We are not your sinners Our voices are for real

0:41:460:41:52

# We realised and won't be mourned We gonna burn your deathmask uniforms

0:41:520:41:58

# We won't die of devotion Understand we can never belong

0:41:580:42:03

# Throw some acid into your face

0:42:030:42:06

# You love us

0:42:110:42:17

# You love us

0:42:170:42:19

# You love us You love

0:42:190:42:22

# You love us Oh, you love us

0:42:220:42:28

# You love You love us

0:42:280:42:30

# You love us You love

0:42:300:42:33

# Till I see love in statues Your lessons drill inherited sin

0:42:390:42:44

# Parliaments a fake life saver

0:42:440:42:47

# You better wake up And smell the real flavour

0:42:470:42:50

# You love us like a holocaust Same PR problem as EST

0:42:500:42:56

# You love us like a holocaust

0:42:560:42:58

# You love us

0:43:030:43:09

# You love us

0:43:090:43:10

# You love us You love

0:43:100:43:13

# You love us Oh, you love us

0:43:130:43:19

# You love You love us

0:43:190:43:22

-# You love us

-You're my guitar hero

0:43:220:43:24

# You love us

0:43:480:43:54

# You love us

0:43:540:43:56

# You love us You love

0:43:560:43:58

# You love us Oh, you love us

0:43:580:44:03

# You love You love us

0:44:030:44:07

# You love us You love

0:44:070:44:10

# Fall into love! #

0:44:180:44:19

APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:44:190:44:23

Eh, today we've been going to all our old haunts,

0:44:290:44:33

and some got knocked down, like Pizza House, which isn't there anymore.

0:44:330:44:37

Dorothy's Caff, not there no more.

0:44:370:44:41

Martin Luther Records, not there no more.

0:44:410:44:43

So it feels a bit daft to say that the title of this next song is Postcards from a Young Man.

0:44:450:44:49

# I don't believe in absolutes anymore

0:45:050:45:10

# I'm quite prepared To admit I was wrong

0:45:100:45:16

# This life It sucks your principles away

0:45:160:45:21

# You have to fight against it Every single day

0:45:210:45:27

# These are the postcards from a young man

0:45:270:45:30

# They may never be written Or posted again

0:45:320:45:36

# These are the postcards from a young man

0:45:380:45:41

# They may never be written Or posted again

0:45:430:45:47

# It is like so many other things

0:46:000:46:04

# As distant as your former sins

0:46:040:46:10

# So sad and lonely and so derelict

0:46:100:46:15

# As the optimism that we once shared

0:46:160:46:20

# These are the postcards from a young man

0:46:210:46:25

# They may never be written Or posted again

0:46:260:46:30

# These are the postcards from a young man

0:46:320:46:36

# They may never be written Or posted again

0:46:370:46:41

# I'll send you postcards Every single day

0:46:540:46:58

# Just to prove I still exist

0:46:580:47:03

# This world will not impose its will

0:47:040:47:09

# I will not give up And I will not give in

0:47:090:47:12

# And I will not give up!

0:47:120:47:14

# These are the postcards from a young man

0:47:270:47:30

# They may never bee written Or posted again

0:47:310:47:36

# These are the postcards from a young man

0:47:380:47:42

# They may never be written

0:47:420:47:46

# I won't betray your confidence I won't pretend my way was lost

0:47:590:48:05

# This world will not impose its will

0:48:050:48:07

# I will not give up And I will not give in

0:48:070:48:10

# This world will not impose its will

0:48:100:48:12

# I will not give up And I will not give in. #

0:48:120:48:15

APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:48:180:48:22

Admitting that their music tends to alternate between the dark and more difficult sounds

0:48:260:48:31

of albums such as The Holy Bible

0:48:310:48:34

and the kind of anthemic songs that filled Postcards From A Young Man,

0:48:340:48:37

what direction do Manic Street Preachers see themselves taking next?

0:48:370:48:40

We know that the next record won't be anything like Postcards From A Young Man,

0:48:400:48:44

and perhaps, deep down, we know that we'll never really, truly attempt to do a record like that again.

0:48:440:48:52

Postcards From A Young Man.

0:48:520:48:53

And we got to decide what we want to do or what direction falls upon us.

0:48:530:48:58

I mean, yes, we've set ourselves our rules. You've got to get young fans,

0:48:580:49:02

you've got to have mass communication.

0:49:020:49:03

But we might have to make a record that doesn't...

0:49:030:49:07

doesn't fulfil any of those rules, we might have to break our rules.

0:49:070:49:11

Bit of a scary time to think about what the next record might be.

0:49:110:49:15

It seems like we have to be more indulgent with ourselves.

0:49:150:49:18

Whatever happens next will be different in many ways.

0:49:180:49:23

Thinking about getting a new singer.

0:49:240:49:26

LAUGHTER

0:49:260:49:28

-You never know.

-Never know.

0:49:290:49:30

# The sky is falling in on you

0:49:330:49:39

# Crushed any happiness you knew

0:49:400:49:44

# The tree gave more to you than love

0:49:440:49:48

# It's still there But, baby, you're gone

0:49:500:49:53

# Remember you

0:49:530:49:56

# Stretched out in the sun

0:49:560:50:01

# All alone forever

0:50:030:50:06

# Conclusions foregone

0:50:060:50:10

# Will you find

0:50:120:50:16

# Some kind of nothingness?

0:50:160:50:20

# Some kind of nothingness

0:50:200:50:22

# Still and lonely

0:50:220:50:25

# Like an old school photograph

0:50:250:50:31

# Laid yourself out under the stars

0:50:350:50:39

# Some peace at last so don't be sad

0:50:400:50:44

# A fitting end to your end

# But, baby, death's our only friend

0:50:510:50:54

# Remember you

0:50:540:50:56

# Stretched out in the sun

0:50:560:51:01

# All alone forever

0:51:040:51:06

# Conclusions foregone

0:51:060:51:10

# Will you find

0:51:130:51:16

# Some kind of nothingness?

0:51:160:51:21

# Still and lonely

0:51:220:51:26

# Like an old school photograph

0:51:260:51:30

# Your future glories, all empty of thoughts

0:51:350:51:40

# There's beauty doing nothing at all

CHEERING

0:53:080:53:11

With this landmark gig set to go down in Manics folklore,

0:53:140:53:18

James and Nicky shared some final reflections on their Blackwood roots.

0:53:180:53:23

There are so many subliminal things that form you.

0:53:230:53:26

The more and more you look back, whether it be the landscape whether it be a teacher, you know,

0:53:260:53:31

whether it just be the place where you used to go and walk your dog all the time, or a shop,

0:53:310:53:36

you know, we would just never have been the band

0:53:360:53:38

we were without growing up there. It's as simple as that.

0:53:380:53:42

I think if there is a South Wales definition of music,

0:53:420:53:45

then it is A Design For Life.

0:53:450:53:48

That song and that sound could only come from where we come from.

0:53:480:53:54

# Libraries gave us power

0:54:010:54:03

# Then work came and made us free

0:54:060:54:10

# What price now

0:54:120:54:14

# For a shallow piece of dignity?

0:54:170:54:23

# I wish I had a bottle

0:54:270:54:30

# Right here in my dirty face

0:54:320:54:37

# To wear the scars

0:54:380:54:40

# To show from where we all came

0:54:430:54:50

# We don't talk about love

0:54:540:54:58

# We only want to get drunk

0:54:590:55:03

# And we are not allowed to spend

0:55:050:55:10

# As we are told that this is the end

0:55:100:55:15

# A design...for life

0:55:150:55:19

# A design...for life

0:55:210:55:26

# A design...for life

0:55:260:55:31

-AUDIENCE:

-# A design for life... #

0:55:310:55:35

OK, this verse is yours. One, two, three, four...

0:55:350:55:40

# ..I wish I had a bottle

0:55:400:55:42

# Right here in my pretty face

0:55:440:55:48

# To wear the scars

0:55:500:55:52

# To show from where I came... #

0:55:550:56:01

Yeah!

0:56:010:56:02

# ..We don't talk about love

0:56:070:56:10

# We only want to get drunk

0:56:120:56:15

# And we are not allowed to spend

0:56:180:56:22

# As we are told that this is the end

0:56:220:56:27

# A design...for life

0:56:270:56:33

# A design...for life

0:56:330:56:38

# A design

0:56:380:56:41

# For life

0:56:410:56:43

# A design for life

0:56:430:56:46

# The summer wind

0:56:460:56:47

# Oh, it came blowin' in

0:56:470:56:51

# From across the Severn Estuary

0:56:510:56:55

# It lingered there

0:56:560:56:59

# It gave hope to you and me, yeah

0:56:590:57:02

# Yeah

0:57:060:57:07

# We don't talk about love

0:57:130:57:17

# We only want to get drunk

0:57:190:57:22

# And we are not allowed to spend

0:57:250:57:28

# As we are told that this is the end

0:57:280:57:33

# A design...for life

0:57:330:57:39

# A design...

0:57:390:57:42

# A design...for life

0:57:440:57:50

# A design for life

0:57:500:57:53
