'Notting Hill Carnival - it means many things to many people.

0:00:080:00:13

'But one of the most special things about Carnival

0:00:130:00:16

'is hearing massive tunes played on heavyweight sound systems

0:00:160:00:21

'out on the streets.'

0:00:210:00:23

When you walk into Notting Hill Carnival,

0:00:230:00:26

you are seeing every shade of person, every religion,

0:00:260:00:29

every creed, every colour, every sexuality,

0:00:290:00:32

everybody sharing this experience of just having a good time.

0:00:320:00:36

There's just something natural about dancing outside

0:00:360:00:38

when the weather's good.

0:00:380:00:39

It's knowing that you're doing something

0:00:410:00:42

that's kind of like you're not supposed to do

0:00:420:00:44

but you can get away with it for two days of the year.

0:00:440:00:47

There's a few people that have obviously moved into Notting Hill

0:00:470:00:50

having seen the Hugh Grant film,

0:00:500:00:51

thinking that it's all about book shops, rather than Bogling,

0:00:510:00:54

let's be brutally honest.

0:00:540:00:56

Around about August time, THAT is Notting Hill.

0:00:560:00:59

'This is a celebration of Carnival's biggest tunes over the years.

0:00:590:01:03

'And the people who've made them... and played them.'

0:01:030:01:07

It's primarily a party for me, my friends and my family.

0:01:070:01:11

And if we've got that right, the rest is right.

0:01:110:01:14

Playing at Carnival, it's one of them things,

0:01:140:01:17

it separates the men from the boys,

0:01:170:01:19

because everyone... everyone thinks they can do it

0:01:190:01:21

until they get into that situation,

0:01:210:01:25

where they've got 5,000 people in front of their sound system,

0:01:250:01:28

jumping, and then they play the wrong tune,

0:01:280:01:31

and then the crowd stop jumping and walk off.

0:01:310:01:34

'But first, let's rewind to where it all started.'

0:01:340:01:38

Notting Hill Carnival evolved through the Trinidad fraternity.

0:01:390:01:46

Trinidad is the land of calypso. It's the land of calypso.

0:01:460:01:50

When a band was playing a tune,

0:01:500:01:53

it was a calypso, it was either Sparrow or Kitchener.

0:01:530:01:56

# Don't make a row

0:01:560:01:58

# The Yankees gone and Sparrow take over now. #

0:01:580:02:00

Younger calypsonians coming up

0:02:000:02:04

decided they wanted more...more life,

0:02:040:02:07

more hip things, so out of the same calypso came soca.

0:02:070:02:14

I mean, soca is just a faster version of calypso.

0:02:140:02:19

# Mashing up de place

0:02:190:02:20

Jump up and break out of de place... #

0:02:200:02:22

When I hear soca music at Carnival,

0:02:220:02:24

that is like the true essence of Carnival.

0:02:240:02:26

It's like it's in my blood.

0:02:260:02:27

# ..Mashing up de place... #

0:02:270:02:29

It's got to be the soca music.

0:02:290:02:32

MUSIC: "Dollar Wine"

0:02:320:02:35

For instance, you play Dollar Wine, OK?

0:02:350:02:39

As soon as that intro drops and it starts to do the whole Dollar Wine,

0:02:390:02:42

you see people that don't even know how to wine

0:02:420:02:45

but they know the movements so they'll do the waist...you know?

0:02:450:02:49

And people, all of a sudden,

0:02:490:02:50

everyone's in unison doing this movement.

0:02:500:02:52

# Cent, five cent, ten cent, dollar

0:02:520:02:55

# Cent, five cent Ten cent, dollar... #

0:02:550:02:59

REGGAE MUSIC

0:02:590:03:03

Carnival was thought of as a calypso event.

0:03:030:03:06

The thought of involving reggae was a bit alien

0:03:060:03:10

because reggae didn't quite fit, because that was more

0:03:100:03:13

Western Caribbean, as opposed to Eastern Caribbean.

0:03:130:03:19

In discussions, we managed to say,

0:03:190:03:21

"Well, look, there's no east to west, north and south of the Caribbean.

0:03:210:03:26

"It's the Caribbean." So, under that umbrella, reggae was let in,

0:03:260:03:32

and we would deliberately play the latest Bob Marley

0:03:320:03:36

or the latest Toots And The Maytals or the latest Jimmy Cliff.

0:03:360:03:40

# You can get it if you really want

0:03:400:03:43

# You can get if you really want

0:03:440:03:47

# But you must try

0:03:470:03:49

# Try and try

0:03:490:03:51

# Try and try

0:03:510:03:53

# You'll succeed at last... #

0:03:530:03:55

And, of course, people wouldn't frown on that

0:03:550:03:58

because people love reggae.

0:03:580:03:59

MUSIC: "One Love" by Bob Marley

0:03:590:04:01

I never play a session and don't play a Bob Marley.

0:04:010:04:04

Every session I play, I must have to play a Bob Marley,

0:04:040:04:07

by the king of reggae.

0:04:070:04:09

# One love... #

0:04:140:04:16

When you play an old, a really old tune,

0:04:160:04:20

even the kids respect it.

0:04:200:04:22

I mean, you...you play Bob Marley's One Love, and they'll sing it.

0:04:220:04:27

- # ..One love - # Hear the children crying... #

0:04:270:04:30

It seems to touch a chord in people's memory, you know?

0:04:300:04:35

When you play these tunes, you could hear the crowd answer you.

0:04:350:04:38

Far and loud away. You know what I mean?

0:04:390:04:42

# ..And feel all right... #

0:04:420:04:44

Carnival, I would say, it's rooted in Caribbean culture.

0:04:440:04:48

It's dub, it's reggae, it's soca, it's jungle,

0:04:480:04:53

it's UKG.

0:04:530:04:54

More and more, over the last few years, it's house music.

0:04:540:04:57

So, yeah, I guess it's music of black origin.

0:04:570:05:00

You get some of the major radio stations who will...

0:05:000:05:04

They'll be petitioning you before, you know?

0:05:040:05:06

"Yeah, we'd like to get a couple of our guys on your system for the day,"

0:05:060:05:10

and we just let them know. You know what? This is a sound boy team.

0:05:100:05:13

It's a sound boy team.

0:05:130:05:15

It's a sound boy team.

0:05:150:05:16

And that's it.

0:05:180:05:19

It's not about YOUR DJ's profile, it's a sound boy thing.

0:05:190:05:21

# Sound boy, sound boys are in... #

0:05:210:05:24

For us in the UK, the carnival is probably our Holy Grail.

0:05:240:05:29

When I first went, all I can remember was the squash,

0:05:290:05:33

the squeeze, trying to get through, and,

0:05:330:05:36

"You might lose your cousin," and, "Everybody hold hands."

0:05:360:05:38

I think once we got to a certain place

0:05:380:05:40

and it just started to get super busy,

0:05:400:05:42

we knew what was about to happen. I couldn't believe

0:05:420:05:45

how many people there were. It were MENTAL.

0:05:450:05:47

I just remember the atmosphere being ridiculous,

0:05:470:05:49

just so strong, so...

0:05:490:05:51

Just energy. Just amazing. Really infectious and addictive.

0:05:510:05:54

I haven't missed the carnival in 40 years, yeah?

0:05:540:05:59

But I've been playing Carnival for 24 years.

0:05:590:06:02

My earliest memories probably was the smells, you know?

0:06:020:06:06

And this would be the vendors cooking their chicken and jerk

0:06:060:06:09

and whatever.

0:06:090:06:10

And when you mix the smells with the sound and the atmosphere,

0:06:100:06:15

it's Carnival.

0:06:150:06:16

# Ooh, yeah, ooh-ooh

0:06:160:06:18

# Police and thieves in the street... #

0:06:190:06:23

The biggest tune for me was Police & Thieves that was...

0:06:240:06:29

by Junior Murvin.

0:06:290:06:30

That was the biggest tune in Carnival at that time

0:06:300:06:34

and the response on that was manic.

0:06:340:06:36

PISTOL SHOT SOUND EFFECT

0:06:360:06:37

JAH SHAKA MUSIC PLAYS

0:06:390:06:40

I came across a sound called Jah Shaka,

0:06:400:06:43

and I've never seen anything like it, you know? The sound was huge.

0:06:430:06:47

I'd never seen so many black men congregating

0:06:470:06:51

together at the time, so I just thought it was amazing.

0:06:510:06:53

I thought to myself at the time, "I'd love to do this."

0:06:550:06:59

What is the feel of playing at Notting Hill Carnival?

0:06:590:07:02

Pfff-fff!

0:07:020:07:04

You're going to make me cry, that's what the feeling is.

0:07:040:07:07

It's like the peacock show, you know, one gets their feathers out.

0:07:070:07:10

It's the one time where you can really go out and do your thing.

0:07:100:07:13

If I think about tunes that have dropped and the place has gone mad...

0:07:130:07:18

Roy Davis Jr, featuring Peven Everett, called Gabriel.

0:07:180:07:21

Wherever you play that record,

0:07:210:07:23

it goes absolutely ballistic, to the point of,

0:07:230:07:26

you couldn't hear the record for the cheering.

0:07:260:07:30

It was that loud. It was... It was epic.

0:07:300:07:32

# Those that stand aside... #

0:07:320:07:37

As a teenager, I was always headed to that Rampage.

0:07:370:07:43

This is the Rampage!

0:07:430:07:46

I've got to pay homage to Rampage because they, still,

0:07:460:07:50

up to now, smash Carnival.

0:07:500:07:52

# Da, da-da, da, da-da

0:07:520:07:54

# Let the boys be boys. #

0:07:540:07:56

The police radiate out from our spot

0:07:560:07:58

because they always get asked two questions -

0:07:580:08:00

where's the toilets and where's Rampage?

0:08:000:08:02

# Yeah! Don't steal our rhymes! #

0:08:020:08:05

The Rampage experience at Carnival is going to be you with

0:08:050:08:09

12,000 other people facing thousands of watts of sound system.

0:08:090:08:12

I would find the quietest corner,

0:08:140:08:16

because Rampage turns into a zoo.

0:08:160:08:19

Sometimes I would go with, like,

0:08:190:08:21

one or two friends and they'd be so like,

0:08:210:08:23

"Oh, we're going to get squashed!"

0:08:230:08:24

And I would be that one in the middle -

0:08:240:08:27

what people would class today as, like,

0:08:270:08:30

mosh-pitting - I was in the middle.

0:08:300:08:32

I'll be starting it, like, "Whagh! Whagh!"

0:08:320:08:34

MUSIC: "Pow" by Lethal Bizzle

0:08:340:08:37

You could not play that record.

0:08:370:08:39

# Yeah, yeah It's Lethal da Bizzle records... #

0:08:390:08:41

Oh. Ohh...

0:08:410:08:44

# It's Lethal da Bizzle records... #

0:08:440:08:45

You couldn't play Lethal Bizzle's Pow at Notting Hill Carnival.

0:08:450:08:48

# ..Pow! Yeah I'm Leth with the B, pow!

0:08:480:08:50

# If you don't know about me pow... #

0:08:500:08:52

The police did not understand what happens to a big group of youths

0:08:520:08:56

when a grime record plays. You could not play that record.

0:08:560:08:59

Trees on the road,

0:08:590:09:02

like TREES,

0:09:020:09:03

proper trees - I am 100 years old. I am a tree -

0:09:030:09:07

waving in the wind like it's a hurricane

0:09:070:09:10

for Lethal B's Pow. Don't know how they done it,

0:09:100:09:13

I mean, just 12,000 people

0:09:130:09:15

ALL screaming at you - "Pow!"

0:09:150:09:19

# ..I'm Leth with a B, pow!

0:09:190:09:21

# If you don't know about me, pow! #

0:09:210:09:22

I could die happy after playing Pow at Carnival.

0:09:220:09:25

That's always that question that people ask me,

0:09:270:09:31

"Yeah, yeah, so what's the big tune at Carnival, man?

0:09:310:09:33

"What's the big tune for Carnival?"

0:09:330:09:35

# Because I'm happy

0:09:350:09:36

# Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof... #

0:09:360:09:40

The thing is, I didn't think Happy would be a big record by Pharrell

0:09:400:09:43

at Carnival this year.

0:09:430:09:44

# ..Clap along if you feel... #

0:09:440:09:46

We have lots of records that set our crowd off, both new and classic.

0:09:460:09:51

Who could resist jumping around when you hear James Brown?

0:09:510:09:56

# Watch me! Watch me!

0:09:560:09:59

# I got it... #

0:09:590:10:01

You have to time it right, but Days Like This...

0:10:010:10:03

# I love days like this... #

0:10:030:10:05

You drop that tune, you've got everybody singing.

0:10:050:10:08

# ..I love days like this

0:10:080:10:10

# It's here... #

0:10:100:10:11

If you can have 2,000, 3,000 people in the street all singing in unison

0:10:110:10:16

and you're seeing the whole street dropping and up and down like one,

0:10:160:10:20

you know, it's a rare sight.

0:10:200:10:23

# ..Whoa-oh! Whoa-oh! Whoa-oh! #

0:10:230:10:26

We play something like Valerie, Amy Winehouse,

0:10:260:10:29

not going to play... not going to play the normal version,

0:10:290:10:32

I'll play the a cappella

0:10:320:10:34

and the crowd will sing that tune,

0:10:340:10:38

everybody in the crowd has got a hand in the air, every single person

0:10:380:10:43

is singing that tune, even when the tune cuts out,

0:10:430:10:48

so there's no... There's...

0:10:480:10:49

It's an a cappella, you don't hear...

0:10:490:10:51

you don't hear the bridge, you don't hear none of those things,

0:10:510:10:54

but you see people's heads just doing the beat

0:10:540:10:57

and THAT is a carnival smasher.

0:10:570:11:00

# Oh, why don't you come on over Valerie? #

0:11:000:11:04

I'm always too afraid to play one of my own tunes at Carnival,

0:11:040:11:07

cos it's like there's nothing worse...

0:11:070:11:09

The only thing worse than clearing or just messing up the vibe at Carnival

0:11:090:11:13

would be messing up the vibe with one of your own tunes.

0:11:130:11:16

I always try not to play my own songs in those situations,

0:11:160:11:18

but maybe, now that you've said that, I should try it.

0:11:180:11:22

# Ooooh-ooh-whee!

0:11:220:11:25

# Ooh-ooh-whee, la-la-la-la-la-la! #

0:11:250:11:29

The list is endless of tunes that are real floor bangers.

0:11:290:11:31

You're never going to beat Lisa Lisa, I Wonder If I Take You Home.

0:11:310:11:35

# I wonder if I take you home

0:11:350:11:37

# Would you still be in love, baby?

0:11:370:11:40

# Because I need you tonight hah-hah-hah! #

0:11:400:11:43

Higher, baby.

0:11:430:11:46

White Lines, Grandmaster Flash

0:11:460:11:48

and so you've got 10,000 people going, "Free whiz!"

0:11:480:11:52

When that bass line kicks in on a proper, proper bass bin

0:11:560:12:01

and I mean a proper, home-made, 25-year-old bass bin,

0:12:010:12:06

there's nothing else quite like it.

0:12:060:12:08

Since I first made the record, it was massive

0:12:100:12:12

and garage was really exploding.

0:12:120:12:14

We played it and you could feel the road shake and I mean, like,

0:12:140:12:17

the tarmac, and after Carnival had finished and everyone had left,

0:12:170:12:21

we went and looked at the metal barriers,

0:12:210:12:22

just solid metal tubing and they were bent back by about 70 degrees.

0:12:220:12:28

# Get it with da rhythm now get me started

0:12:280:12:31

# Me nah cum fer dex me just on raves. #

0:12:310:12:33

It's very raw, it's very visceral.

0:12:330:12:35

Her flow on it is just incredible, it sums up UK music, that.

0:12:350:12:39

I love Carnival.

0:12:390:12:41

Every year without fail, for it to be something that I'm looking forward to

0:12:410:12:44

in the same way that I'm looking forward to Christmas

0:12:440:12:47

and I ain't getting no presents, it's just, like, vibes.

0:12:470:12:50

- # I'm just Ms - # Dy-na-mitee! #

0:12:500:12:52

Being in the Carnival,

0:12:520:12:53

hearing your music or being on that stage performing your music,

0:12:530:12:56

it's just, like, real, like, home, proud moment of being home,

0:12:560:12:59

and, like, having achieved something with your people there around you.

0:12:590:13:03

# No matter what you do, I know

0:13:030:13:05

# I know You should be in love with me... #

0:13:050:13:07

Performing at Carnival is just a totally different experience.

0:13:070:13:11

Because men have grown up going to Carnival and wanting it,

0:13:130:13:17

there's not much better.

0:13:170:13:18

You may do bigger events, you may do events for more money,

0:13:180:13:21

but Carnival you don't even get paid as well

0:13:210:13:23

and that's the most brilliant about it, cos it is a genuine love.

0:13:230:13:26

INDISTINCT

0:13:260:13:27

CHEERING

0:13:270:13:29

The thing about a lot of, the kind of, the foundation garage records,

0:13:290:13:33

things like So Solid Crew's 21 Seconds...

# I've got 21 seconds to go

0:13:360:13:37

# Cos if you'd like to let me know

0:13:370:13:39

# Let me in the studio

0:13:390:13:40

# I've got 21 seconds before I got to go

0:13:400:13:41

# Did you see me in the video? Oh, no

0:13:410:13:43

# Did you see me in the video? Oh, no

0:13:430:13:45

# So would you like to let me know? Let me in the studio

0:13:450:13:47

# I got 21 seconds before I got to go

0:13:470:13:48

# Did you see me on the video? #

0:13:480:13:50

You can play that now and you're going to get the same reaction that

0:13:500:13:54

they would've got back in 2000, 2001, everybody knows every lyric.

0:13:540:13:59

It's a BIG tune, it literally... It gets the fingers in the air,

0:13:590:14:03

it gets everybody going and because it's such a perennial,

0:14:030:14:07

there's no way that that fails.

0:14:070:14:09

# Rudeboy... #

0:14:090:14:10

Jungle.

0:14:100:14:11

# ..Original madmah madmah mad nuttah... #

0:14:110:14:14

Original Nuttah by Shy is just ape and it goes off everywhere.

0:14:140:14:18

I can remember, like, literally just going into some cra...

0:14:180:14:23

like I had been electrocuted in the middle of the street.

0:14:230:14:25

I didn't care who was watching me.

0:14:250:14:27

There is the most hard-core reggae sound to the most raviest

0:14:270:14:30

and the hip-hop, that is just Carnival in a record.

0:14:300:14:33

# ..Watch ya

0:14:330:14:34

# You never know di gangsta mi she dem inna jungle... #

0:14:340:14:37

I believe you can play any good record at the right time

0:14:370:14:41

and that would set off the crowd.

0:14:410:14:42

Pick something like D'Angelo Cruisin', for instance,

0:14:420:14:46

a song that... It's a slow jam.

0:14:460:14:49

# Away from here... #

0:14:490:14:54

The thing about playing Carnival is...when you've got it right,

0:14:540:15:00

you so have it right,

0:15:000:15:01

you know when you put a tune on what's going to happen

0:15:010:15:07

because you've made it so, you stand there

0:15:070:15:09

and you're conducting.

0:15:090:15:11

Everyone out there is the instrument

0:15:110:15:13

and you're standing there, saying to them, "Yeah, you know what?

0:15:130:15:15

"You know what's going to happen now?

0:15:150:15:17

"You're going to sing really loudly here."

0:15:170:15:18

# ..We're going to fly away... #

0:15:180:15:21

Just... You get this little kind of fizzy feeling inside.

0:15:210:15:24

# ..I love you when we're cruisin' together... #

0:15:250:15:30

# Snoop... #

0:15:330:15:34

Every DJ has that, like,

0:15:340:15:36

a tiny bit of that internal, egomaniac, puppet-master vibe,

0:15:360:15:41

you know, where we like to control...

0:15:410:15:43

# ..Snoop... #

0:15:430:15:45

..not in a bad way,

0:15:450:15:46

but you like to be able to kind of determine the mood in a room.

0:15:460:15:49

With great power comes great responsibility.

0:15:500:15:53

# ..When the ... in the crib, Imma

0:15:530:15:55

# Drop it like it's hot

0:15:550:15:56

# Drop it like it's hot Drop it like it's hot... #

0:15:560:15:59

The sense of pride, playing in your home town,

0:15:590:16:01

it's the gift and the curse.

0:16:010:16:03

You know they're going to be looking at you screw-faced

0:16:030:16:05

if you don't give them what they've come for, you have to deliver.

0:16:050:16:08

To be able to stand on the back of the van or up on that stage

0:16:080:16:12

and entertain three, four, five thousand people

0:16:120:16:15

is the highlight of my DJ career.

0:16:150:16:18

# Murder, she wrote

0:16:180:16:21

# Murder, she wrote... #

0:16:210:16:22

It used to be a celebration of Caribbean culture

0:16:220:16:25

and now I think it's a celebration of multi-culture.

0:16:250:16:28

# Ah come out to live meh life Somebody say

0:16:280:16:31

# Live meh life

0:16:310:16:32

# Play ah mas and live meh life

0:16:320:16:35

# I'm the happiest man alive... #

0:16:350:16:36

It's Europe's biggest festival and it's one of a kind, where...

0:16:360:16:41

You don't get the floats in other little festivals,

0:16:410:16:45

you don't get a barrage of sound systems

0:16:450:16:48

and you don't get a million and a half people attending

0:16:480:16:50

- over the two days. - If not more.

0:16:500:16:52

I cannot think of any other event on the planet that is like that.

0:16:520:16:55

# Feel it in the one drop

0:16:550:16:57

# Oooh-ooh-ooh

0:16:570:16:59

# And we'll still find time to rap

0:16:590:17:02

# We're makin' the one stop... #

0:17:020:17:05

If they come to the UK in the summertime,

0:17:050:17:08

they're going to go to Buckingham Palace

0:17:080:17:09

and they're going to go the Notting Hill Carnival.

0:17:090:17:12

It's a celebration, a true celebration,

0:17:120:17:15

of everything that is great about Britain.

0:17:150:17:18

I'm so proud of it as a British person,

0:17:180:17:20

to be from somewhere that can do that

0:17:200:17:21

and I think a lot of people think that

0:17:210:17:23

and it's just a right good party.
