Families. Friends. A city. A nation united in grief. God's mercy and

:00:10.:00:27.

good this... On Friday night, a terrible tragedy

:00:28.:00:42.

struck the Clutha Bar in Glasgow's city centre. Since then, while

:00:43.:00:48.

emergency services have battled to first rescue and then recover the

:00:49.:00:53.

victims, Scotland has been in shock, in mourning. Tonight, we look at the

:00:54.:01:00.

last 72 hours which have both devastated and united nation.

:01:01.:01:10.

A Friday at the end of the month. For many, it is payday. Christmas is

:01:11.:01:19.

less than a month away. The festivities, together with the start

:01:20.:01:26.

of the St Andrews Day weekend, means Friday is a busier night than usual

:01:27.:01:34.

in the city. The Clutha Bar on Stockwell Street has been a Glasgow

:01:35.:01:39.

landmark for almost 200 years, a traditional pub, it has played host

:01:40.:01:43.

over the years to bands and musicians such as Gerry Rafferty and

:01:44.:01:48.

Billy Connelly. On Friday night, Esperanza were playing. Bar owner

:01:49.:01:54.

Saverio Petri was expecting a busy night. Esperanza have a large

:01:55.:02:00.

following in labs go and I was looking forward to seeing what would

:02:01.:02:05.

happen. Brothers Michael and Billy were looking forward to going out. I

:02:06.:02:12.

saw Esperanza were playing. I am friends with the manager and a

:02:13.:02:18.

couple of people who also like them. It was great, I thought that would

:02:19.:02:25.

be a good thing. I contacted Billy to see if you wanted to go out in

:02:26.:02:29.

the afternoon and then go and see Esperanza in the Clutha Bar. 945 TM,

:02:30.:02:36.

the band came on. Everyone was cheering. A really good atmosphere

:02:37.:02:43.

in the pub. On the other side of Glasgow, a police helicopter,

:02:44.:02:51.

callsign Sierra Papa 99 is on shift. It is based on the north side of the

:02:52.:02:55.

River Clyde which has served Scotland for 11 years. A familiar

:02:56.:03:02.

sight above the city streets, this easy 135 model is a favourite of

:03:03.:03:06.

emergency services worldwide. The helicopter's exact flight path on

:03:07.:03:14.

Friday night is unknown but at ten o'clock Sierra Papa 99 is flying

:03:15.:03:18.

over the Merchant City area of blogs go. According to one witness, all

:03:19.:03:25.

does not seem well. It was totally unusual for me to be in the car park

:03:26.:03:29.

and when I got to the sixth floor, I heard a really loud mechanical

:03:30.:03:37.

noise, like a car misfiring but 100 times louder. I looked above me and

:03:38.:03:42.

found myself cowering down because it looked directly above me. I

:03:43.:03:47.

looked above me, behind me and then straight in front and at 11 o'clock

:03:48.:03:52.

that kind of direction, I could a helicopter. The revellers in the

:03:53.:03:59.

Clutha Bar below remain oblivious to what is going on. The band,

:04:00.:04:05.

Esperanza, are in full swing. The band were coming up to having a

:04:06.:04:11.

break. The pub was as busy as the pub gets. At the time I remember

:04:12.:04:17.

saying, Jesus Christ, there is a helicopter coming straight for me.

:04:18.:04:20.

It was only the following day when my colleague recounted what I said,

:04:21.:04:25.

that I said there was a helicopter about to crash into the car park,

:04:26.:04:30.

and I hung up and I saw this terrible form of the helicopter

:04:31.:04:35.

tumbling nose over tail. It fell beyond the residential flats in

:04:36.:04:39.

front of me. That was the last I saw of it. Those in the bar below

:04:40.:04:44.

seconds away from becoming part of a disaster which shocks the world. I

:04:45.:04:50.

was in the pub with four mates of mine. One of them went outside for a

:04:51.:04:56.

fag break so I joined him. Fire David Traill there was a ska band

:04:57.:05:05.

on. -- there was a ska band on. There was a whoosh noise. I heard an

:05:06.:05:13.

engine above me, I looked above me, it was getting louder and louder. I

:05:14.:05:17.

spotted a helicopter falling from the sky. Within seconds, News begins

:05:18.:05:26.

spreading on social media. I heard a very loud bang. There was smoke. We

:05:27.:05:33.

were laughing that the band had made the roof come down. They carried on

:05:34.:05:39.

playing. At first, I thought the speakers had possibly blown. But

:05:40.:05:45.

then I looked around and the cloud of dust suddenly took over the whole

:05:46.:05:50.

pub. Someone started screaming and the whole pub filled with dust. You

:05:51.:05:56.

could not see anything. The ceiling had fallen onto the bar, in the

:05:57.:06:01.

central bit of the pub will stop that is when I realised things was

:06:02.:06:06.

serious. You could not breathe. Every time you took a breath, it was

:06:07.:06:15.

caught in your mouth. I saw what appeared to be a flash. There was a

:06:16.:06:24.

loud noise. I heard a crash, bang, and indescribable noise. My first

:06:25.:06:28.

instinct was that was a door slamming but obviously, it was

:06:29.:06:35.

louder than that. The pub was plunged into darkness. Rubble

:06:36.:06:42.

started to fall. A sort of bitter silence. I turned to my left hand

:06:43.:06:49.

side and saw that the ceiling had collapsed onto the bar. A second

:06:50.:06:53.

later I turned back around and it seemed like the band were still

:06:54.:06:57.

playing but this was a matter of microseconds. The band obviously

:06:58.:07:03.

realised something had happened. One of the singers said, I told you I

:07:04.:07:06.

would bring the roof down, obviously, completely unaware of

:07:07.:07:12.

what had happened. The whole ceiling had collapsed in on itself and a

:07:13.:07:19.

gantry on the bar had also collapsed in on itself. There was an initial

:07:20.:07:27.

bout of screaming. I was hit by some flying debris which knocked me down

:07:28.:07:39.

behind the bar. At this point... There was debris falling all around

:07:40.:07:47.

me. There was a huge ball of dust. It seemed as if that helped. We

:07:48.:07:55.

could see what was going on. When I looked over to the left-hand side of

:07:56.:07:59.

the pub, it was almost as if it was not there. There was no left-hand

:08:00.:08:03.

side of the pub. I could not see anything past the middle of the bar.

:08:04.:08:10.

There was debris and carnage. I went and I'm sure there were other people

:08:11.:08:14.

as well, I'm certain of that, and opened the doors. As I approached

:08:15.:08:21.

the door, I was about ten feet from the door and I could see my brother

:08:22.:08:27.

was standing at the door. Whilst I was holding the door I saw my

:08:28.:08:30.

brother will stop we were getting people out. Just saying, everything

:08:31.:08:37.

will be OK, it will be fine, because it was at that time. It was getting

:08:38.:08:45.

more and more dusty. I stepped inside to see if there was anyone

:08:46.:08:51.

still around. I cannot recall if I was shouting, is everyone OK, I

:08:52.:08:58.

cannot recall the time remember -- but I remember it was quiet. I could

:08:59.:09:05.

see the bar had collapsed. I looked over to the right-hand where we were

:09:06.:09:12.

standing and I could not see anyone. I am almost satisfied that everyone

:09:13.:09:16.

in the area where we were standing had vacated the building and was

:09:17.:09:24.

safe. And then I turned around. You knew it was something really

:09:25.:09:28.

serious, some think horrific and serious had happened. We macro I

:09:29.:09:33.

could see people coming out of the pub is covered in blood and covered

:09:34.:09:38.

in dust. I saw the two chaps lying on the floor, on the ground. The

:09:39.:09:45.

structure of the bar was kind of placed over them from the waist

:09:46.:09:49.

down. Both chaps were lying there. The chap nearest to me was lying

:09:50.:09:54.

with his eyes wide open, his arms stretched out. And... I thought they

:09:55.:10:04.

had passed away, they looked like mannequins, I feared the worst for

:10:05.:10:09.

them. I turned around and my brother was there. I shouted for some help.

:10:10.:10:13.

There was another chap who I don't know. It was great that he helped.

:10:14.:10:21.

We went over to the gantry part of the bar, or some kind of structure

:10:22.:10:25.

that seemed to be on top of the chaps. We lifted it up without any

:10:26.:10:31.

thoughts or hesitations, this is just what we need to do. I could not

:10:32.:10:37.

tell you how heavy it was. I have no recollection. We just lifted the

:10:38.:10:41.

struck up and shouted for somebody to help and dragged the chap out. I

:10:42.:10:49.

think that person was conscious. He was moaning. I heard him make a moan

:10:50.:10:57.

and that was fantastic. I was relieved and I thought, the chap is

:10:58.:11:03.

still alive, that is great. People formed a human chain, side-by-side

:11:04.:11:09.

to help pull injured people out and just the person from one another to

:11:10.:11:19.

each other. There was a second person under him. That person did

:11:20.:11:27.

not look to me, did not look conscious. He was face down. I

:11:28.:11:35.

lifted the structure up and someone came and dragged the chap away. I

:11:36.:11:40.

have no idea who it was. I do not even learned what the person looked

:11:41.:11:46.

like -- I do not even remember what the person looked like. That person

:11:47.:11:52.

may have been one of the fatalities, you do not know? I do not know but I

:11:53.:11:58.

would not like to think that it was. Because... I would not like to think

:11:59.:12:08.

that it was because that would be... That would be difficult. That would

:12:09.:12:14.

be very difficult. I was in the immediate vicinity of the pub. About

:12:15.:12:20.

ten people, half of them struggling to be conscious or unconscious and

:12:21.:12:24.

the other four or five with varying degrees of wounds or injuries. It is

:12:25.:12:30.

so soon after that it is hard to recollect exact Lee and because of

:12:31.:12:36.

the dust and the determination for people to do the human thing before

:12:37.:12:40.

the emergency services got here. There is blood on your shirt. Yeah,

:12:41.:12:49.

it is not mine. Trapped in the pub, sisters Nancy

:12:50.:12:55.

and Ann feared for their lives. I thought I was going to die. I

:12:56.:13:01.

thought, where is my sister? I was old and I was screaming for my

:13:02.:13:07.

sister. -- I was pulled out. I thought she was dead. I thought my

:13:08.:13:15.

sister was dead. She is not going to make it. At one point, I started to

:13:16.:13:20.

cuddle the guy in front of me will stop I said, what is your name? He

:13:21.:13:26.

said George. I am screaming for my sister. I became aware of her voice.

:13:27.:13:36.

She was screaming, my sister. When I heard that, I thought, thank God,

:13:37.:13:40.

she is alive, I am alive, unbelievable. People were just doing

:13:41.:13:46.

what they could, they were helping to bring people out, helping to

:13:47.:13:51.

comfort people who were still trapped but it was the calmness

:13:52.:14:00.

which was quite surprisingly. It is not something I have ever seen

:14:01.:14:04.

before, it is not something I want to see again. Within minutes, the

:14:05.:14:10.

emergency services are on the scene. We have got 125 firefighters, not

:14:11.:14:16.

only working outside, but inside the building. We are carrying out

:14:17.:14:25.

rescues. The art in the process of making the building stable, it is

:14:26.:14:28.

very unsafe. But we are carrying out extensive work, and we will be here

:14:29.:14:31.

for as long as it takes. I was made aware of the situation

:14:32.:14:49.

quickly. I saw some people who were very seriously injured. I saw some

:14:50.:14:56.

people who were showing no signs of life. They said it was a helicopter,

:14:57.:15:04.

I was incredulous, I thought, it is not, it is this feeling that has

:15:05.:15:12.

collapsed. Why would that happen? As I was walking past, I saw what I

:15:13.:15:20.

thought was a piece of wood sticking out, with a yellow reflective part,

:15:21.:15:26.

and I still thought, that is a rafter, something to do with the

:15:27.:15:31.

structure of the building. I was not prepared to believe it was a

:15:32.:15:34.

helicopter and that would happen on a Friday night. They do not crash

:15:35.:15:36.

into pubs. Breaking news. We are hearing from

:15:37.:15:50.

our colleagues in Scotland that there are reports that a helicopter

:15:51.:15:58.

has crashed into the roof of a pub. As news spreads, it is not just the

:15:59.:16:05.

emergency services who respond. I had been to a dinner dance with my

:16:06.:16:09.

wife, I came home and switched on the midnight news. There it was. As

:16:10.:16:15.

was to be the story again throughout the night, your first belief is,

:16:16.:16:21.

this cannot be true, this cannot be true. But you listen and you think.

:16:22.:16:31.

It is. It is a helicopter, and it is a police one. When I saw that, I

:16:32.:16:40.

thought, right, this is it, this is what you do your job for. I got a

:16:41.:16:45.

phone call from my son, he said, get on your telly. I put on one of the

:16:46.:16:52.

news channels, and it said a helicopter had come down. Another

:16:53.:16:55.

phone call said it was a police helicopter. It was a difference of

:16:56.:17:03.

20 miles an hour then, I grabbed my stuff and I ran into the car. I went

:17:04.:17:12.

down, quaking, to the barrier. There were the constables. I said, what do

:17:13.:17:22.

you want me to do? The back-end of a helicopter sticking up through the

:17:23.:17:34.

roof. I was watching it in the eyes of some of the cops, and this was a

:17:35.:17:41.

crusade, not a job. No matter what it took, they were getting in there,

:17:42.:17:46.

to get their folk back. Reverend Whitley goes to the hospitals, where

:17:47.:17:50.

more than 30 people have now been taken. It expected there to be high

:17:51.:17:57.

emotion, and instead, it was calm. It was not shocked, it was just a

:17:58.:18:09.

calm, how is it that, out of the clear sky, when you are in somewhere

:18:10.:18:17.

safe, inside a building, your whole world changes? From Reverend

:18:18.:18:24.

Gilbraith, spiritual concerns turn to practical matters. I said to the

:18:25.:18:29.

hotels, have you got any tea and coffee? Within 15 minutes, the

:18:30.:18:34.

holiday inn had tea and coffee and flasks. There were muffins and all

:18:35.:18:41.

the rest of it. People were appearing from Asda and Tesco, it

:18:42.:18:48.

was like feeding the 5000. Within a matter of hours, the generosity was

:18:49.:18:54.

amazing. At the hospitals, stories of shock and confusion. Full of

:18:55.:19:00.

contradictions, one man said, I was standing in the door, and the next

:19:01.:19:05.

thing I knew, I was lying on the ground outside. Very strange. As

:19:06.:19:15.

dawn breaks over Glasgow, the city faces the full extent of the

:19:16.:19:24.

tragedy. All of us have seen over the last few hours the speed and

:19:25.:19:29.

effectiveness of the mobilisation of the emergency services in dealing

:19:30.:19:35.

with this. We have also heard of the instinctive courage of ordinary

:19:36.:19:41.

Glaswegians, who have helped their fellow citizens. This is a black day

:19:42.:19:48.

for Glasgow and for Scotland. But it is also St Andrews Day. It is a day

:19:49.:19:55.

we can take pride and courage in how we respond to adversity and tragedy.

:19:56.:20:01.

That response from our emergency services and from ordinary citizens

:20:02.:20:06.

has been exceptional. Then, the first official news of casualties.

:20:07.:20:11.

32 injured people were taken by ambulance from the scene. Sadly, I

:20:12.:20:24.

can also confirm one fatality. At first, we heard there was one. That

:20:25.:20:31.

raised hope, because we knew a helicopter would have a crew of

:20:32.:20:34.

three, and if only one fatality had occurred, that set your pulse

:20:35.:20:42.

racing, gosh, the other two might have survived. That went on for

:20:43.:20:49.

quite a long time. Hope rises. But not for long. Soon comes the news

:20:50.:20:53.

that everybody has been fearing. We can now confirm that the number

:20:54.:21:05.

of fatalities involved in this incident has risen to eight.

:21:06.:21:13.

The city, the nation, begins to mourn.

:21:14.:21:23.

As the tributes grow, many of the injured return to the scene. The

:21:24.:21:30.

cold light of day bringing with it a stark reality. I have come out of

:21:31.:21:41.

hospital, there was a man on the news, he was next to me. He was one

:21:42.:21:54.

of the dead. For me, it became personal at 6:30pm last night. I was

:21:55.:22:01.

hoping I would get home, because I had been out of the house since 7am.

:22:02.:22:07.

I had missed 19 calls, a lot of them came from my sons. They had been

:22:08.:22:12.

getting contacted by the family. The name was given, and I realised this

:22:13.:22:21.

is no longer be doing what I should do as a chaplain, it had moved to a

:22:22.:22:28.

different level. It was Kirsty Nelis who had been aboard the helicopter.

:22:29.:22:36.

She had not survived. News of other confirmed victims begins to reach

:22:37.:22:39.

loved ones, yet more bodies remain trapped. One man, his father a

:22:40.:22:45.

regular, fears of a helicopter crash on his bus journey home. I was

:22:46.:22:50.

sitting and this man behind me said, on his bus journey home. I was

:22:51.:23:01.

were only four of us, he said, have you seen this? I said, what's that?

:23:02.:23:09.

He said, look at this. They helicopter has crashed into the

:23:10.:23:15.

Clutha Bar. Right away, I went, oh, my God. I went, my dad. I said, my

:23:16.:23:26.

dad is in there. He said, you are joking. I said, he is dead. I said,

:23:27.:23:38.

listen, I just know. After two days, he finally here's what he has been

:23:39.:23:43.

dreading the most. He received a phone call if you hours ago? Yes,

:23:44.2:55:59

about an hour ago. The police. They confirmed they are bringing to

2:56:002:55:59

people have # eight are bringing to people out. I have to go there to

2:56:002:55:59

identify my dad. So far, nine people have been confirmed as having died

2:56:002:55:59

in Friday's crash. Already, the investigation into what caused the

2:56:002:55:59

tragedy has begun. Cancers, though, will not come any time scene. --

2:56:002:55:59

answers. For the families, the weighting will be painful. Now, it

2:56:002:55:59

is a time of grieving and reflecting and supporting.

2:56:002:55:59

Candles lit to remember the dead. Thoughts and prayers for the

2:56:002:55:59

injured. We do not end this day in despair and loss. Our and set is

2:56:002:55:59

that we stand defiant, and that our great and vibrant and irrepressible

2:56:002:55:59

city shall stand together with our suffering ones and, hand-in-hand, go

2:56:002:55:59

forward, into the light. Into the light. That defiance, that

2:56:002:55:59

togetherness, shown so clearly by so many. I have just left the air Anne

2:56:002:55:59

Boleyn space to come here and talk to the flat paramedics, who knew

2:56:002:55:59

those involved. They are deeply upset with what has happened, but we

2:56:002:55:59

are working with them to provide what support we can. I have come

2:56:002:55:59

from the Cathedral and I have lit a candle to say a prayer for the

2:56:002:55:59

people that lost their life. On Friday night, Lasko experienced a

2:56:002:55:59

tragedy which reverberated around the world -- Glasgow. It will

2:56:002:55:59

continue to mourn and not soon forget. Yet a tragedy which many

2:56:002:55:59

feel has allowed a side of the city to shine through as never before. It

2:56:002:55:59

beggars belief, the heroism. These are heroes, these are true heroes,

2:56:002:55:59

the people that put themselves at risk to try to get people that they

2:56:002:55:59

do not know out of a pub to see bodies being dragged out. I cannot

2:56:002:55:59

thank the people of Glasgow in us. When that happened on Friday, nobody

2:56:002:55:59

had any regard for their own safety. It was a collective effort, a lot of

2:56:002:55:59

people helping, everybody that needed to be helped. I people that

2:56:002:55:59

could help them. The thing that will live with me will be the images of

2:56:002:55:59

the helicopter falling but also the people running towards the sea. That

2:56:002:55:59

will be with me until my dying day. It summed up Glasgow in seconds.

2:56:002:55:59

Glaswegians respond to everything with their heart first, with their

2:56:002:55:59

heart before any other part. Yes, there are times when that can be

2:56:002:55:59

unfortunate, but in a situation like this, it is so typical that they

2:56:002:55:59

respond without any hesitation. If somebody needs help, you help them,

2:56:002:55:59

that is the rules.
