Santiago in Chile, on the western seaboard of South America. This

beautiful country played host to the World Cup championships. Santiago,

the capital, is a modern metropolis. Its broad streets and spacious

squares equal anything found in Europe. In the heart of the city,

the traffic is a wild turmoil. The buildings are given a face-lift for

the benefit of the visitors. There is no lack of cars in the capital.

Many of them carefully preserved vintage models. No wonder within

into -- import duty of 300%. They even have automatic traffic

controls. The only trouble is that nobody takes any notice of them.

Football shouts at the passer-by from every newsstand. And from every

shop window. The only easy way to get to Santiago is by air, and the

visiting teams landed at the airport. Here, a jet is landing with

the German team. They still seem dazed from the long

flight. As each team arrived they were given a friendly reception. The

German trainer. And cheerful crowds surrounded the bosses that took them

to their trading quarters. -- buses. The Chile team needed no time for

acclimatisation and had been in training for three months. They need

to make a success their third try at the championship. Even they could

not use the new National Stadium, because it was not finished. Carlos

Dittborn, the organiser of the tournament, unfortunately died four

weeks before the start. When Chile was given the championships, he

said, because we have nothing, we shall build everything. Work men

were working literally up to the last minute.

The first visitors to the stadium come to check their seats. He does

not seem happy about his. On the day of the opening game, roads are

teeming with traffic. The more sensible people, of course,

went on foot. Tickets are checked carefully, but

with typical Latin courtesy. And discs, giving the fixtures, are

handed out free. You lost? For the opening game in Santiago

between Chile and Switzerland, almost every one of the 75,000 seats

were sold. And the band marches in for the opening parade. Despite the

warm weather, the music seems to lead the spectators fairly cold. --

to leave them fairly cold. The president of Chile enters the box.

And the crowds liven up as the teams take the field to the applause to

everybody in general, and from the President's box in particular.

At this stage, everything seemed to be in the air. In the seventh

minute, the Swiss breakthrough. The first goal in this new stadium.

Chile took time to recover from that. Just before half-time, Sanchez

driving home a ten yard shot, to level the scores. Someone seems to

be happy. In the second half, Chile went into the attack. Picking up a

loose ball and crashing home the second goal for Chile. Less than ten

minutes later, Sanchez scored again to make it Chile three, Switzerland

one. Your -- Uruguay met their team in

this Carlos Dittborn stadium, dedicated to the former organiser.

Colombia in white shorts and dark shirts. Uruguay won the toss started

off as if they would walk away with the game. They missed their chances.

Columbia's forwards were equally weak in front of goal. After 20

minutes, Uruguay handled the ball in the penalty area. Zuluaga converted.

For the rest of the first half, Colombia managed to hang on to the

one goal lead, although Uruguay were having more of a game.

After ten minutes in the second half, pushing the ball home from a

few yards out Uruguay's first goal. This triggered an aggressive period

of play by Uruguay. Although the Uruguay team worked early on top,

their second goal did not come until 20 minutes from the end when Jose

Sasia scored. Back in Santiago, we found a military parade. That is not

my idea of a military haircut. This really is Santiago, not prewar

Berlin. We followed the troops back to the military school, where the

German team is quartered. All the security against spies that hundreds

of cadets can offer. At a guess, the German team is quite happy to be out

of uniform. The German captain, he set up a record in letter writing.

Germany against Italy back in the national stadium. This was to be a

game of missed opportunities. The German goalkeeper fumbles and the

Italian inside forward misses from point-blank range.

Number 22 celebrated his 21st birthday on the day of the game. The

German centre forward goes inches past the post. And a free kick for

Italy crashes into a wall of defenders. Both defences were now on

top and the forward line seem to lack penetration. Another German

scoring chances missed and so the game ends in a goalless draw.

At Rancagua, where England play Hungary in the first round, there

had been heavy rain. Here, as are all championship grounds, the turf

was protected by huge plastic sheets. Some of the water would have

been useful at Arica. England in the traditional colours

of white shirt and dark shorts kicked off. The pace is fast,

despite the rain. A few spectators that our present were almost lost in

the stadium. The game was fairly even until the

19th minute, then the first goal for Hungary was cracked home from about

20 yards. CHEERING

in the remainder of the first half but they all came to nothing.

Peanuts! Shouting as thirsty work. While the teams were taking a well

earned break, the fans dashed off to wet their whistle. A good job the

interval is short! They couldn't stand that pays for long. However

strange the language and surroundings may have been, the

drinks stand should have made everyone feel at home, no matter

where they came from. When the teams came out for the

second half, it was still anybody's game.

May be the England team had had a tactical talk at half-time. Whatever

the case, they were managing to keep the whole dairy and forwards out. --

Hungarian forwards. One man in trouble was the keeper,

having difficulty with a slippery ball.

With a quarter of an hour of the second half gone, a Hungarian

defender prevented a certain goal by pushing the ball with his knee and

the referee gave a penalty. Andy Flowers scores!

It's now Hungary 1-1 England. From this point, both teams continually

piled on the pressure but couldn't break through. The game looks like

ending in a draw but with less than 20 minutes to go, Albert took a pass

near the goal and made it to - want to Hungary. -- 2-1.

In the second game of the first round, Russia played Yugoslavia.

Neither side scored in the first half. It was a fast game and both

holes had had narrow escapes. -- both goals.

Relief as that goes past. Now a free kick for the Russians. It goes past

the bar. The Russians have taken the lead.

The plane now became very ragged. Neither team was very dangerous and

good passing movements were few and far between.

It seemed as though fumblings were to be the order of the day. One of

the Russian players is injured and has to be carried off.

It was a game of hard tackling and many fouls.

The Russians attack up the right wing and with five minutes to go,

Russia score their second goal. Although the Russians' football

wasn't very outstanding, they deserved their victory.

Now another change of scene. The stadium where Spain meet

Czechoslovakia. Sports headline: Chile wolfs the Swiss cheese.

The Spaniards have been serving up the better football but the Czechs

have more than made up for it with enthusiasm.

Neither side has scored in the first half but both forward lines have had

several chances. Attacks on the gold usually peter out when they get near

the penalty area. -- on the goal. In the second half, the Czechs are kept

on the defensive but ten minutes from the final whistle, they break

away and score the only goal of the game. As most of the photographers

were lined up behind the Czechoslovakian goal, they seems to

have backed the wrong horse. The Spaniards had played the better

football but to win the World Cup, one must score goals - and being a

goal-scorer can be a dangerous profession. Back in Santiago,

Germany in white shirts kick-off against Switzerland. From the start,

the pace was fast. German attacks were followed by Swiss

counterattacks. And now a German attack in slow

motion. A terrific left foot drive and the Swiss keeper does well to

stop that one. The ball then moves back to the other end of the field.

Try as they might, Switzerland can find no way through. And when they

do shoot, it has to be from long range.

In the 20th minute, he gets the ball, round the defender and puts

Germany in the lead. Half-time. The score: Germany

numeric 1-0 Switzerland. In the second half, Switzerland are juiced

to ten men. -- reduced. Six minutes after the restart, this player

bursts through the middle to score Germany's second goal.

It seems all over bar the shouting but the Swiss thought otherwise and

less than ten minutes later, Schneider lifted the ball over the

heads of two Swiss players into the German net. 2 - want now to

Germany. The Swiss ball was in danger several other times but they

held out and the score became Germany 2 -1 Switzerland. The game

between Uruguay and Yugoslavia was a smashing affair in every sense of

the world. The Yugoslavs are in white and the game started as clean

as their shirts. After 20 minutes, Cabrera heads in this centre to put

Uruguay in the lead. Five minutes later, Jankovic's fowl

in the penalty area. -- Jankovic is fouled in the penalty area. And the

referee says "penalty". With half an hour gone, the

Yugoslavs attack again. Yankovic shoots, Bert all bounces out of the

keeper's hands and it goes into the net. To -14 Yugoslavia at half-time.

-- 2-12 Yugoslavia. When the teams come back for the second half,

Yugoslavia go straight into the attack.

That was a let off for Uruguay. But with only two minutes gone, a centre

is sent in. For the rest of the game, both of

the teams had their chances to score but frittered them away. With just

is another scuffle. And what looks like ironic applause for England's

Mr Aston. And now over to Vina del Mar for the

match between Brazil and Czechoslovakia. The Czechoslovakian

's are all in white. The teams took time to settle down.

There was danger in the air when the Brazilians were in breach of goal.

-- in reach of goal. There were attacks from the

Czechoslovakian 's, but their forwards rarely bothered the

Brazilians. This game had its fair share of

fouls. This was a game spoiled by too much

defensive play and too much inaccurate shooting. It was a poor

match with far too much and running about and far too little good

football. The Brazilians gave the impression

they had lost a lot of their brilliance from the 1958 World Cup

series, or perhaps they had aces up their sleeve for later games.

Whatever the answer, a goalless draw was a fair result.

The Russian and Colombian teams shared the same training ground. In

comparison to some of the scenes in the first round, everybody here

seems very friendly. Bond embraces, or maybe it is a warm up for the all

in wrestling later on! A lot of people had the idea that Columbia

would be a pushover for the Russians, who were heavily backed

favourites. This match was played in the Bourne

stadium in Arica. The Russian team in the white shorts. -- Carlos

Dittborn stadium the Colombian start with a powerful display of football

but soon the Russians gained the upper hand. In the ninth minute,

Ponedelnik slips ball back. Two minutes later, evading the

defenders and the Russian team are two goals ahead.

The Colombian seem to be outclassed. Their midfield moves

took them nowhere. Ponedelnik slips in a grand shot and it is 3-0 to the

Russians. The lead looks impressive at 3-0 but

halfway through the first half, the Colombian 's breakthrough. --

Colombians. Slips the ball over the head of the advancing Yashin.

The goal seems to have put new life into Colombia and they have the

Russians guessing now. In the second half, they still keep pressing and

the Russians are kept on the defensive. With half an hour to go,

Ponedelnik makes it four for the Russians. In the 23rd minute, a

corner of the Colombia. And nobody is more surprised when he scores

direct to make it 4-2. Colombia's only chance lay in attack and they

continued to storm the Russian goal. With 25 minutes to go then make it

4-3. A few minutes later, a breakthrough.

Goal number four. 4-4, what a wonderful fightback from

3-0 down. In Vina del Mar most people expected Mexico to be

outclassed by Spain. But the Mexicans still kept the Spanish war

from the door right up to a minute before the end of the game. --

Spanish wolf. The Ripper scuffs crashed the ball home -- wofl.

Mexico's goalkeepers seems to suffer from a mild case of disappointment.

In Santiago, Chile team pegged away at training. The goalkeeper is being

given a work-out in preparation for the next game with Germany. Here to

German former stars are demonstrating the latest in football

boots. This is Toro, descendant of South

American Indians and Chile's starring back right. Like the rest

of them, he has to try out the new boots. Later in the Santiago

stadium, Germany win the toss. Chile kick-off and finds the German

defence tough to crack. The German forwards give the Chile

defence a lot of trouble. That one was saved, yes, it was close.

The German centre forward is brought down in the penalty area. The

penalty is converted, sending the keeper the wrong way. In midfield,

Chile have a lot of the game. But there are a tax break down when they

reached the penalty area. -- fairer -- their attack. With less than ten

minutes, a beautiful centre. And the second goal. 2-04 Germany. Back in

Rancagua for the match between Hungary and Argentina. Hungary had

qualified for the quarterfinals before coming out for this game.

They fielded four reserves. The game was of correspondingly poor

standard. The Argentine team in white shirts had a chance of

reaching the quarterfinals, if they could win.

A magnificent drive by the Argentinian. And an equally

magnificent save. There was a lack of urgency in both sets of forward

lines. Once again, the football produced was not of real World Cup

standard. The game ended in a goalless draw. The hunger Romanians

were satisfied and the Argentina team seemingly pleased enough with

their performance. -- hunger Hungarians. This player worked as

hard as the rest but was not selected for a single one of the

championship badges. Ferenc Puskas, an ex-officer and now heavy

artillery in the Spanish attack will stop autograph hunters are the same

all over the globe. In the match with Brazil, the

Spanish team in dark shirts, started off well.

There was little to choose between the two sides. In the 34th minute a

fine passing movements let through for the player to score for Spain.

Scarcely a minute later, Spain are on the attack again. And a terrific

volley almost brings about goal number two. The Brazilian keeper is

beaten. But half-time came. The score Spain 1-0 Brazil.

For a while the second half, Spain still have the upper hand but they

seemed to tire and the Brazilians became more aggressive. And now free

kick for Spain. A flying overhead kick. The ball is in the net but the

winger is offside. left winger, who cut down the wing.

Across goes the ball and it's there. The equalising goal for Brazil.

This man never knows who he is playing until the day of the game

and then someone has to tell him. The Stanley Matthews Brazil. And he

goes to the byline, across to the centre. 2-one, two Brazil.

One of the big surprises of the tournament was Mexico's win over

Czechoslovakia. Almost straight from the kick-off, the Czechs, all in

white came through. The Czechs have got their first goal. It looked like

being another sad day for the Mexicans.

Once again, Czechoslovakia start off in attack. A through ball to their

outside right and that shot might have made it 2 - 0. Most of the

spectators watch one game and listen to another at the same time.

The Mexicans are now on the attack. A through ball and Diaz crashes the

ball in from two regards to even the score. -- two yards.

The Mexican defence is still under pressure but the Czechs are getting

a bit slower and their moves are becoming all too obvious.

Then after half an hour's play, the Mexicans breakthrough.

And now he has the ball and put it past the keeper. Goal number two to

Mexico. At half-time, the scoreboard Mexico

2-1 you Czechoslovakia. The Mexican tactics have them

guessing too often and although two Mexican players were injured, the

Czechs couldn't penetrate their tight defence. And then the Mexicans

counter attack. Handball and the referee says "penalty".

The photographers raced down from the other end of the field. This

could be the picture of the season. Hernandez takes the cake and it's

there. Three - want to Mexico. -- 3-1. Mexico's first win in the World

Cup series. The press building. Scores of

newsmen from around the world and direct telly type connections to all

parts of the globe. A babble of tongues and the endless clicking of

typewriters. This is the United Nations of sport reporters. And like

all reporters everywhere, they always want to know everything about

everything, right down to the last stored. Until, of course, they've

got their last reports in for the day and then perhaps they'll get

down to some recreation. Santiago by night. Like any city anywhere, neon

lighting, flashing signs and the hustle and bustle of traffic.

Football is put on ice for a few hours and players go to the ice

review. The German trainer picking up a feud

tips for sliding tackles. -- a view tips.

But the next day it looked as if the German team had had their ardour

cooled off a little bit too much. A gold that unity for Germany,

playing in white shirts. But it seemed it wasn't going to be their

lucky day. Another attack, header, but no, it's pulled down once again.

And the shots that the keeper didn't save, well, defenders scrambled them

away. Here's another attack. And in the

inch might have got that one in the net but it wasn't to be.

-- and another inch. But on several occasions, the German goal had its

charmed life, too. But with four minutes to go, the winning goal.

Yugoslavia are 1-0 in the lead and the local Yugoslavian colony go

crazy. And the grin has gone from the

German trainer's face. The score: Germany zero-one Yugoslavia. The

quarterfinal between Czechoslovakia, all in white, and Hungary. Right

from the kick-off, the hunger Aryans were dangerously aggressive. The

Czech goalie was kept on his toes. Now the hunger Aryans set off an

attack. -- hunger -- hunger. The Czechs started good passing

movement. The ball goes through to the left winger. He cuts in and

shoots. It's there. Czechoslovakia have scored.

The Hungarians are now putting everything they know into the game.

But still the Czechs are playing good football.

Still more attacking from the Czechoslovakian side but now they're

slowing the game down. They're leading one ill but time is

definitely on their side. -- one Neil.

Hungary bring the ball away again. And there goes the final whistle.

And Czechoslovakia have made the semifinals. The man of the match is

their goalkeeper. In the Brazilian camp, training is

under way. Palais goes over the hurdles with the rest of the players

but apparently wasn't fit enough for the match.

Both teams take a little time to settle down.

They say that every dog has to have his day and here is one that is

going to prove it! It's Jimmy Greaves the England inside forward

who really knows how to deal with the situation.

Brazil. They go to the semifinals and England go home. Back to the

stadium in Arica for the quarterfinal between Chile and

Russia. Russia, playing in white shorts,

have been on the attack. But now Chile is heading back. The centre

forward is fouled. Sanchez to take the free kick. It is in the net.

Yashin did not like that. The local fans explode with joy. And now the

Russians attack. Failing to clear. And Russia score. Chile disagree

with that one. They are appealing to the linesman. But the Dutch referee

says no. He was not offside. It could be worse! The Russians

breakthrough almost straight from the kick-off. Chile move back onto

the attack. Rojas moves it forward and he shoots and it is a goal. The

Russians start to put on pressure. Yashin is coming out to play the

third full-back. The Russians are still on the attack. Chile would

everybody in defence cleared the ball and it is a breakaway by the

forwards. The Russians have it covered. It is a let off for Russia.

And the game ends in a 2-1 victory is the Chile and the Russian

favourites are knocked out. Chile's fans are as wild with jubilation as

if they had won the final. Santiago, seized with football fever and the

spirit of Mardi Gras. They dance in the streets. Even if they have never

seen a game of football in their lives.

Even the nightclubs and theatres are on the ball. Quite the team. I would

not mind a game with them myself! They handled themselves pretty well.

And the ball. Neat footwork, also. The National Stadium in Santiago is

packed full of final between Chile and Brazil. Chile are playing in

white shorts. The president is here for what South America feels should

have been the World Cup final. The players are appearing to be nervous

in the first minutes. The ball is crossed. There is

Garrincha. He gets a shot and it is in the net. That makes it 1-04

Brazil. -- 1-0 four Brazil. Back to Garrincha, again. This time, he is

brought down. The local fans do not like it a bit. After half an hour's

play, Brazil forced a corner. Garrincha deflects the ball into the

net for the second goal. The game is getting a little bit rough now. A

free kick, taken by Toro, and it is in the net. That was a beautiful

shot. 1-2, to Brazil. Chile on the attack. The ball is

cleared away by the Brazilian defence. The ball out to Garrincha.

That has gone behind for a corner. And pillage Mac made it 3-1. --

Vava. Chile have the ball. And there is an

appeal for a penalty. Sanchez took the ball and made it 3-24 Brazil. --

3-2. A free kick for Brazil. Vava caught

the defence napping. And the public relations campaign for support Chile

the final. The stadium at Vina del Mar. The

semifinal between Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia. The Czechoslovakian team

in the white shirts. The game started at a fast pace, with the

ball going from end to end and there were good chances for both sides but

no score at half-time. After the start, the Yugoslavian keeper

decided to bounce the ball on the head of Kadraba. And Czechoslovakia

go one up. After this goal, the Czechoslovakia

team start to press harder. About ten minutes later, he moves to

far out from the goal and the score is even. Yucca Vic. -- Jerkovic.

Time now offer running repairs. -- for running repairs. More nets hat

to be mended in Chile in those two weeks than in other countries in a

whole year. In my day, they used to make them

stronger. A breakthrough by Czechoslovakia. Adolf Scherer comes

through to score the second goal for them.

After that, Yugoslavia seem to go to the dogs.

Czechoslovakia on the attack again. For no apparent reason, he handled

and it was a penalty. Adolf Scherer converts it added is a clear 3-1

victory for Czechoslovakia. Many of the games attracted few

spectators. It was not a lack of enthusiasm, but a lack of cash that

kept the crowds away. If you wanted to see one game, you had to pay for

a set of tickets and the prices were too high. But the man in the street

could see the games for free at special TV stands. I like the look

of that centre forward. He will probably tell his boss he had a

flat. What is going on down there? More footwork?

The Yugoslavs, all in white, take the field against Chile to decide

the third and fourth places. And the first lot of film arrives. In the

first half, there was little to choose between the two sides. Then

Chile attacked down the right wing and the Yugoslav keeper makes a

spectacular save. Again, the dark shirted Chileans

attack and the Yugoslav defence stands firm.

In the second half, the Yugoslavs attack and managed to get the ball

in the net but Scoble are is offside.

victory for the host nation and the trainer's victory is celebrated.

What is a cup final without brass bands and military music?

Change the white hats for dark blue and we might be at Wembley!

And among the crowds, we find the old familiar faces.

Babes of all ages. He must be expecting stormy weather! Our friend

with the hollow tooth. What a neat little moustache! He

obviously doesn't know much about the game or he wouldn't have to

listen to the common Terry! -- comment Terry. Consternation!

Sheared the world into. -- sheer bewilderment and boyish

concentration. The Czech team come onto the field for the final with

Brazil. More public relations. And the Brazilians ran in in striped

shorts and white socks. Pele pass to set this -- sit this came out among

the 55,000 spectators. It's perfect cup final weather and for the most

part, typical cup final football. And Brazil win the toss. Can this be

a good omen? Right from the first whistle, Brazil

seemed to be getting better at the game.

Both sides seemed just a little nervous on this big occasion.

And now Czechoslovakia are on the attack. The cross is put through.

But Gill marred dies just that bit too quick the centre forward. --

shill Mark dives. He has to be on his toes for this

one. That was a close shave. Now a sharp Czechoslovakian counterattack.

He shoots and its goal. First blood the Czechoslovakian side.

Czechoslovakia still attack. Then the Brazilians begin to pull out

some of their tricks. And just two minutes later, the ball

is whipped smartly in from the left to even the score.

A free kick for Brazil, another dangerous moment cleared away by the

Czechoslovakian defence. For the first 25 minutes of the

second half, the game is even. With Brazil doing a little more

attacking, perhaps. A fine shot. And no Brazil bring the ball away

again. -- now. A pass out to Amarildo on the left wing. Crosses

the ball. Headed and it is in the net. Brazil have got a 2-1 lead. The

Brazilians go crazy with delight. It seems as though the scorer has been

injured. But now, as usual, the photographers flock onto the field.

The Czechs appear in no mood to give up.

More attacks from the Czech side. But the Brazilian defence is

standing firm. It's crossed in the middle but a

brilliant save by Gilmar. Now Brazil onto the attack. And it's

a throw in for Brazil. Taken by their outside right,

Garrincha. It is lobbed high into the middle. Up goes the Schrojf. He

fumbles and it is in the net. And now there is wild jubilation. Again

the photographers swarm onto the field. But nobody wants to take the

picture of the unhappiest man in the World Cup.

The game is over. The referee cleverly runs out to the line to

collect the ball. He'll keep it as a souvenir.

Not only photographers swarming onto the field but all the officials,

too. Smiles and tears of joy and

disappointment. The Brazilian captain receives

visual remake up. For the second time in succession, it will stay in

Rio de Janeiro. -- version rule. They carry the flag triumphantly

round the stadium. Back in Rio de Janeiro, the whole

population crowd the streets, delirious with joy, dancing,

shouting, cheering. They give their team a frenzied reception.

Gigantic fireworks displays light up the night sky of Rio. This was

indeed a night to remember. With the World Cup winners in 1966 get a

reception to equal this? -- will the World Cup winners.
