GOLF: THE STORY OF THE OPEN SPT G584J/01 BRD000000

0:00:000:00:00

.

3:32:173:32:24

I remember the weather, and how we got over it.

3:32:293:32:31

One man's meltdown and another man's triumph.

3:32:313:32:36

A massive heartbreak for one of the game's greatest players.

3:32:363:32:39

The defining moment of my career.

3:32:413:32:43

Great experience. I had an absolute blast.

3:32:453:32:48

I just think about a great test of golf.

3:32:483:32:50

The renaissance of Ernie Els, really.

3:32:503:32:53

I will never, ever forget that feeling when that putt went in.

3:32:533:32:57

Golf's never over till it's over.

3:32:573:32:59

The Links land of northwest England,

3:33:003:33:03

venue for the 141st Open Championship.

3:33:033:33:06

Once again, Royal Lytham and St Annes Golf Club

3:33:063:33:09

welcome the game's oldest major.

3:33:093:33:11

And Darren Clarke, such an emotional winner at Royal St George's,

3:33:133:33:17

began his week by handing back the Claret Jug.

3:33:173:33:21

I've had a wonderful year as Open Champion.

3:33:213:33:24

I've enjoyed being Open Champion.

3:33:243:33:25

You know, I've been very pleased and privileged

3:33:253:33:28

to take the Claret Jug to a lot of places round the world

3:33:283:33:30

where it's never been before.

3:33:303:33:31

The little box that you get with it, the secure box,

3:33:313:33:35

has got more stickers on it than it's probably ever had.

3:33:353:33:37

So it's done a lot of air miles this year.

3:33:373:33:39

Thank you for looking after the trophy for us.

3:33:393:33:41

There's a few little marks on it...

3:33:413:33:42

Well, we'll soon put those right!

3:33:423:33:44

'He's represented the R&A and the Open Championship extremely well.'

3:33:443:33:47

I mean, he's travelled with the Claret Jug

3:33:473:33:50

and shown it around the world, everywhere he's gone.

3:33:503:33:53

I suspect it's been in a few bars

3:33:533:33:55

and he's probably slept with it at his bedside and so on.

3:33:553:33:58

I don't know that we've ever had a champion quite as...

3:33:583:34:01

can I use the word "chuffed"?

3:34:013:34:02

..as Darren was to be Open Champion.

3:34:023:34:04

And of course, the crowd at Royal St George's just lapped it up

3:34:043:34:08

and...he was the people's champion.

3:34:083:34:11

On home turf, a strong English challenge was expected.

3:34:123:34:17

Lee Westwood and Luke Donald were heavily fancied to break through,

3:34:173:34:20

after a spell in major championships where no-one player had dominated.

3:34:203:34:24

No-one's really come through and started to win consistently,

3:34:273:34:30

which just speaks to how difficult it is to win majors.

3:34:303:34:34

Tiger Woods had captured 14 major titles,

3:34:343:34:37

but none since the 2008 US Open.

3:34:373:34:41

Did you ever feel a sense of anxiety over when, or if,

3:34:413:34:44

the next one is coming?

3:34:443:34:46

No. No. I just try to...

3:34:463:34:49

try and put myself there.

3:34:493:34:50

And I think if I continue putting myself there,

3:34:503:34:53

you know, enough times, then I'll win major championships.

3:34:533:34:56

At 6.30 on Thursday morning, Barry Lane, a 52-year-old qualifier,

3:34:583:35:03

had the honour of hitting the championship's first shot.

3:35:033:35:06

It was just a really, really nice atmosphere.

3:35:063:35:11

The weather was a little bit chilly, a bit drizzly, first thing.

3:35:113:35:13

A little bit of wind.

3:35:133:35:15

I got a few butterflies,

3:35:153:35:16

but I just, you know, just focused on trying to hit a good shot.

3:35:163:35:19

I managed to hit a pretty good tee shot onto the green.

3:35:233:35:26

It was a great honour. I just wanted to thank him.

3:35:263:35:29

It's obviously the only open course where you start with a par 3.

3:35:293:35:33

It's not, you can just bunk it down there somewhere short of the bunkers

3:35:333:35:37

and play the hole conservative,

3:35:373:35:38

you've just got to hit a very, very good shot.

3:35:383:35:41

Three hours and 12 minutes later, Woods did precisely that.

3:35:433:35:47

APPLAUSE

3:35:493:35:51

It led to an immediate birdie,

3:35:533:35:56

and he was 4-under after 7.

3:35:563:35:59

CHEERING

3:35:593:36:02

That was as good as it got, though.

3:36:023:36:04

Despite a short game masterclass,

3:36:043:36:07

Tiger had to be content with a 67.

3:36:073:36:10

APPLAUSE

3:36:103:36:12

Paul Lawrie, the 1999 Open Champion at Carnoustie,

3:36:143:36:18

chipped in twice during a run of three consecutive birdies.

3:36:183:36:22

APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

3:36:223:36:25

He signed for a 65.

3:36:253:36:27

Westwood could not have wished for a better start.

3:36:333:36:37

He birdied the first two holes

3:36:393:36:41

but played the back 9 poorly for a 73.

3:36:413:36:43

APPLAUSE

3:36:433:36:46

Game 15 contained three major champions and two of them

3:36:463:36:51

lived up to their reputations.

3:36:513:36:53

CHEERING

3:36:533:36:56

Ernie Els finished the day with a 67.

3:36:563:36:58

APPLAUSE

3:36:583:37:01

Darren Clarke's poor form continued.

3:37:013:37:05

He shot 76, but nothing could dilute the warm applause

3:37:053:37:09

from those in the grandstands on the 18th.

3:37:093:37:12

APPLAUSE

3:37:123:37:15

Pick of the bunch was American Zach Johnson,

3:37:173:37:20

who managed seven birdies in a 65.

3:37:203:37:22

APPLAUSE

3:37:223:37:25

On this day, though, Adam Scott was inspired,

3:37:313:37:35

moving 5-under through 14.

3:37:353:37:37

APPLAUSE

3:37:373:37:42

The best swing, from my memory, was the second shot into 15th.

3:37:423:37:45

It just felt like that perfect swing you put on the range

3:37:473:37:51

that's so hard to take to the course.

3:37:513:37:53

APPLAUSE

3:37:533:37:57

It was a lovely shot, and rolled the putt in

3:37:593:38:02

to keep everything going in the right direction.

3:38:023:38:05

Scott's 3 was followed by this approach to the 16th,

3:38:083:38:12

which led to another birdie.

3:38:123:38:14

Scott was 7-under-par and flirting with history.

3:38:143:38:18

A quick second there, I did the maths and I'm fully aware

3:38:223:38:25

that a 62 hadn't been shot in a major,

3:38:253:38:27

and thought about it for a second,

3:38:273:38:29

which is something you don't want to think about any longer than that.

3:38:293:38:32

Unfortunately, I just stumbled on the last.

3:38:323:38:35

Scott equalled the course record with a 64.

3:38:383:38:41

APPLAUSE

3:38:413:38:44

I'd never shot that low a score in a major before.

3:38:453:38:48

I'm thrilled. It's a perfect start to the tournament.

3:38:483:38:52

Having missed the cut on his three previous trips to the Open,

3:38:533:38:57

American Brandt Snedeker solved the mystery of Links golf

3:38:573:39:00

with an opening 66.

3:39:003:39:04

On course for the same score was 23-year-old Rory McIlroy.

3:39:043:39:09

But on the 15th, McIlroy's drive flared right,

3:39:113:39:17

struck a spectator on the head and flew out of bounds.

3:39:173:39:21

Are you OK?

3:39:223:39:25

He was getting into trouble.

3:39:253:39:26

He was getting into trouble and he was getting out of trouble.

3:39:263:39:29

And I think that's what we really love about him.

3:39:293:39:31

He grounded out in the end,

3:39:343:39:36

and then came in with a 67, which was fabulous.

3:39:363:39:39

He got himself into position.

3:39:393:39:40

CHEERING

3:39:433:39:45

McIlroy would birdie two of the closing three holes.

3:39:453:39:49

In contrast, world number one, Luke Donald bogeyed the 18th

3:39:553:40:00

for a level par round of 70.

3:40:003:40:01

Joining Lawrie and Johnson in a tie for second

3:40:123:40:15

was Belgium's Nicholas Colsaerts.

3:40:153:40:17

On the 17th, not even a fairway bunker derailed him.

3:40:193:40:24

It's always great when you hit a shot like that

3:40:243:40:26

and you come racing out of the bunker and you know it's come out good.

3:40:263:40:30

It was just coming out exactly where I wanted it to be.

3:40:303:40:33

65 at the Open is more than good.

3:40:363:40:39

But not enough to prevent Adam Scott being the outright

3:40:393:40:43

first-round leader, following a day of excellent scoring.

3:40:433:40:46

Heavy overnight rain saturated the course for day two.

3:40:533:40:56

There were genuine concerns play would be delayed.

3:40:573:41:01

But the tireless work of the green staff ensured no disruption.

3:41:013:41:06

Wind remained absent, but Royal Lytham is formidable,

3:41:063:41:10

whatever the weather.

3:41:103:41:12

Nicholas Colsaerts, one of the first leaders in action,

3:41:123:41:15

bogeyed two of the opening three holes,

3:41:153:41:18

but worse was to come.

3:41:183:41:20

On the 7th, I basically did

3:41:203:41:22

everything you need to avoid at Lytham.

3:41:223:41:27

I hit a drive down a pot bunker, hacked it out, maybe 10 yards,

3:41:273:41:30

then I was right in between

3:41:303:41:31

playing just short of the green or going for it.

3:41:313:41:34

Went for it, missed that one,

3:41:343:41:36

it went right, missed the next one.

3:41:363:41:40

Ended up in the total rough.

3:41:433:41:45

It was just basically nowhere to be seen.

3:41:453:41:47

Lifted in the rough,

3:41:473:41:50

hit it over the green, got it up and down for eight.

3:41:503:41:52

APPLAUSE

3:41:553:41:57

Funnily enough, I've got a smile on my face,

3:42:013:42:03

because I know I've just done everything wrong.

3:42:033:42:05

It's not like I've just missed, you know, half a shot.

3:42:053:42:07

I've missed everything.

3:42:073:42:09

In a different sense, Rory McIlroy also missed everything.

3:42:123:42:16

And...everyone,

3:42:163:42:18

on a day of wild inconsistency.

3:42:183:42:21

Early on, the bad was often followed by the good.

3:42:263:42:29

APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

3:42:333:42:35

But his hopes began to unravel on the 9th.

3:42:353:42:38

No!

3:42:393:42:41

There was an element there of the very young player

3:42:453:42:48

who still has a bit to learn, which suggested that, you know,

3:42:483:42:51

he still has to learn a bit of patience

3:42:513:42:53

when it comes to Open Championships, or major championships in general.

3:42:533:42:58

Within a year, he'll probably have a Grand Slam, you know,

3:42:583:43:02

because he's that good. Who knows?

3:43:023:43:04

But Friday morning's big story was Brandt Snedeker.

3:43:043:43:08

Already 1-under for the round, as he arrived on the 6th green.

3:43:083:43:12

Yeah, it was just one of those putts you're just going to get close.

3:43:123:43:15

Up over a ridge, going downhill.

3:43:153:43:16

I figured within three feet, I was happy.

3:43:163:43:18

I hit one of those putts and when you're putting good,

3:43:183:43:20

those long ones always seem to find their way on the right line,

3:43:203:43:23

and then about five feet from the hole, I think I started walking.

3:43:233:43:26

CHEERING

3:43:263:43:28

To make that one really got the momentum going.

3:43:283:43:30

"OK, today's going to be a good day."

3:43:303:43:31

I was able to get a good birdie on 9,

3:43:353:43:37

I hit a 9-iron about four feet on 9, made birdie there.

3:43:373:43:41

CHEERING

3:43:413:43:43

11, you know, I hit a nice wedge in there,

3:43:463:43:48

about a 20-footer.

3:43:483:43:49

Made that one.

3:43:513:43:53

And at this time, I thought every putt was going in.

3:43:563:43:59

Snedeker was round in 64,

3:43:593:44:01

and reached the halfway mark of the championship 10-under.

3:44:013:44:05

Playing with intelligence, not tempted to attack the flanks.

3:44:053:44:10

That was my game plan. Just put it in the middle of the greens,

3:44:103:44:12

because the bunkers are waiting there for a reason.

3:44:123:44:14

They're penalties, so try and shoot away from them.

3:44:143:44:17

And I did that, you know.

3:44:173:44:18

I think I hit 31 of the first 36 greens or something like that.

3:44:183:44:21

To have that kind of run where you feel like

3:44:213:44:23

you can do no wrong was a lot of fun.

3:44:233:44:24

Out in the afternoon, Adam Scott's front-9 was uneventful,

3:44:243:44:29

but his round was kick-started on the 10th.

3:44:293:44:32

CHEERING

3:44:373:44:40

Scott also birdied the 11th and 18th, in a back-9 of 33,

3:44:463:44:52

his golf far more accurate

3:44:523:44:54

than his definition of "spectacular."

3:44:543:44:56

To fight back and shoot 67,

3:44:583:45:00

without doing anything...

3:45:003:45:03

spectacular,

3:45:033:45:04

showed that my game was in good shape

3:45:043:45:07

and I kept myself right in touch with the leader, which was important.

3:45:073:45:11

CHEERING

3:45:113:45:13

Scott spent his first 36 holes in the company

3:45:173:45:20

of Northern Ireland's Alan Dunbar, the reigning amateur champion.

3:45:203:45:24

Dunbar shot 71 in the second round, but missed the cut

3:45:263:45:30

and with it, the opportunity to win the silver medal.

3:45:303:45:34

The experience, however, was invaluable.

3:45:343:45:37

We only had two amateurs this year. They both got good draws.

3:45:373:45:41

I hope they enjoyed the experience.

3:45:413:45:43

I know Alan did, because I went to see him

3:45:433:45:46

as soon as he finished his 36 holes and he'd loved the experience.

3:45:463:45:50

He's a wonderful golfer and I think played with great credit, actually.

3:45:503:45:55

I said, "I really hope you enjoyed it and I know we'll be

3:45:553:45:57

"seeing more of you in the future and we look forward to it."

3:45:573:46:00

Adding youth to the leaderboard

3:46:033:46:05

was a 22-year-old Dane.

3:46:053:46:07

CHEERING

3:46:073:46:09

Thorbjorn Olesen won his first event

3:46:093:46:12

on the European Tour three months earlier

3:46:123:46:15

and his confidence shone through

3:46:153:46:16

on the way to a 66.

3:46:163:46:18

-MAN:

-Get up! Get up!

3:46:193:46:21

CHEERING

3:46:243:46:26

Olesen entertained as,

3:46:263:46:28

of course, did Tiger.

3:46:283:46:30

He came to the 18th 5-under, very much in the hunt,

3:46:333:46:36

his every move the centre of attention.

3:46:363:46:39

Oh, went off to the left.

3:46:413:46:43

-CROWD:

-Aww!

3:46:453:46:47

He's still the biggest draw. He's compelling for other reasons.

3:46:473:46:50

There's still no-one more fun to watch. It's that simple.

3:46:503:46:54

Other players might post better scores, they're winning tournaments,

3:46:543:46:58

but he's capable of doing things

3:46:583:47:01

that others aren't.

3:47:013:47:02

Just those little, special, end-of-the-day moments.

3:47:023:47:05

That's why they can't take their eyes off him.

3:47:053:47:07

CHEERING

3:47:103:47:12

It's a fantastic thing to see, you know, when Tiger pulls off a

3:47:153:47:18

shot like that and, particularly, at that moment, at that place.

3:47:183:47:22

That's Tiger. I mean, you just expect that from Tiger.

3:47:243:47:26

We haven't for a couple of years. We're starting to see more of it.

3:47:263:47:30

But usually, when you see things like that, you're thinking,

3:47:303:47:33

"Boy, it's his week, isn't it?"

3:47:333:47:35

CHEERING

3:47:353:47:37

Tiger is one of a very small, select bunch that produces that

3:47:373:47:41

kind of moment that you take away as a memory.

3:47:413:47:45

Another is the great Tom Watson,

3:47:473:47:50

who needed to birdie the 18th to make the cut at the age of 62.

3:47:503:47:54

He thought that he'd missed out,

3:47:573:47:59

but he still gave one of those moments.

3:47:593:48:02

He always produces something at The Open.

3:48:043:48:06

Great favourite with the crowds.

3:48:063:48:08

CHEERING

3:48:133:48:15

The five-time Open champion was through to the weekend.

3:48:153:48:19

You know, Tom's the guy that I grew up idolising

3:48:223:48:25

and love the way he swung the golf club, the way he played golf, the

3:48:253:48:29

way he handled himself on the golf course and the way he won and lost.

3:48:293:48:32

It's a wealth of knowledge. The first thing he says is,

3:48:323:48:34

"You've got to get over here and have a great time.

3:48:343:48:37

"If you don't have a great time, you won't have any success."

3:48:373:48:40

Watson's wisdom didn't fall on deaf ears.

3:48:403:48:43

Snedeker's 130 strokes equalled the lowest 36 hole total

3:48:433:48:48

in the history of the championship.

3:48:483:48:51

This year, I did my best job with doing that, in trying to

3:48:513:48:53

heed his advice and enjoy it, embrace it.

3:48:533:48:56

Going to a local pub, seeing the people, having a few

3:48:563:48:58

pints at night, eating the local food and having a great time. You know?

3:48:583:49:01

Really embracing what the British Open really means.

3:49:013:49:04

Pretty neat moment to see your name on top of that leaderboard.

3:49:043:49:07

APPLAUSE

3:49:073:49:09

As Snedeker led by only one from Scott, Tiger was in third,

3:49:093:49:13

just ahead of McDowell, with Els seven behind the leader.

3:49:133:49:17

Day three was blessed with sunshine.

3:49:213:49:23

Conditions were ideal

3:49:233:49:25

and a young Dane was about to fulfil a long-held ambition.

3:49:253:49:30

Thorbjorn Olesen had earned the dream draw,

3:49:303:49:35

a round with his childhood hero.

3:49:353:49:37

I always wanted to play with Tiger.

3:49:393:49:42

It's been a dream for me since I was ten years old, or something.

3:49:423:49:46

I think that was the first time I saw him.

3:49:463:49:48

To get the opportunity to actually play with him was fantastic.

3:49:483:49:52

I don't think I've ever been that nervous on the first tee.

3:49:553:49:58

It was just like when you warming up and it was difficult.

3:49:583:50:01

All the movement, you could just feel it in the ground, almost.

3:50:013:50:04

It's good when you're nervous, I think.

3:50:073:50:09

Salvaging par on the opening hole

3:50:103:50:13

was a good way for Olesen

3:50:133:50:15

to settle down.

3:50:153:50:17

'I just tried to really focus on my own game.'

3:50:173:50:20

Hit a great par on the 1st, that really helped me.

3:50:203:50:23

Tiger was also scrambling for par.

3:50:253:50:28

He bogeyed the 3rd as well, and Olesen had overtaken his idol.

3:50:353:50:39

Adam Scott could have stumbled early in the round,

3:50:423:50:46

but his putter came to the rescue.

3:50:463:50:48

Saves are always crucial in a big tournament.

3:50:493:50:51

They keep the momentum going if you're going in the right

3:50:513:50:54

direction and, certainly, making a couple of putts early was important.

3:50:543:51:00

CHEERING

3:51:003:51:02

That was a great start to that round.

3:51:023:51:05

The galleries massed around the Tiger-Olesen match

3:51:053:51:09

and on the sixth, the world number two clicked into gear.

3:51:093:51:12

CROWD MURMUR

3:51:163:51:17

CHEERING

3:51:173:51:20

He also birdied the 7th,

3:51:203:51:22

where he witnessed the extraordinary

3:51:223:51:24

escape from the battling Olesen.

3:51:243:51:26

APPLAUSE

3:51:303:51:32

A crucial birdie maintained his presence on the leaderboard

3:51:373:51:40

at 3-under.

3:51:403:51:41

APPLAUSE

3:51:413:51:43

Two holes later, though, Woods put daylight between them.

3:51:453:51:48

When he birdied the 9th, Tiger stood 7-under.

3:51:523:51:55

After 40 holes without a blemish,

3:51:593:52:01

Brandt Snedeker made his first

3:52:013:52:04

bogey of the championship on the short 5th.

3:52:043:52:06

Having steered clear of all 206 bunkers at Royal Lytham

3:52:083:52:11

on Thursday and Friday, he finally succumbed on the 6th

3:52:113:52:15

and dropped another shot at the 8th.

3:52:153:52:18

'As great as the first 40 holes were, or whatever it was,

3:52:193:52:21

'you're going to have a stretch of nine holes

3:52:213:52:23

'where you don't play good. I don't care what anybody says.'

3:52:233:52:26

I was fully expecting that and prepared for it.

3:52:263:52:28

I was not under any illusion that I was going to

3:52:283:52:30

play 72 holes of perfect golf, cos it ain't going to happen.

3:52:303:52:32

Playing partner Scott took charge of the championship.

3:52:353:52:39

CHEERING

3:52:393:52:41

He parred the first six holes,

3:52:413:52:43

then birdied the 7th and 8th.

3:52:433:52:46

And when Snedeker bogeyed the 9th,

3:52:463:52:48

the Australian's lead swelled to 4.

3:52:483:52:51

Zach Johnson fought back into contention with a 66,

3:52:553:52:59

the lowest score of the day.

3:52:593:53:01

APPLAUSE

3:53:033:53:05

Having found sand, Scott had

3:53:093:53:11

an up and down on the 10th, to salvage a par.

3:53:113:53:14

'The save on 10 was huge in the scheme of things.

3:53:163:53:20

'I hit a pretty poor wedge shot in there,'

3:53:203:53:22

left myself not an easy putt from above the hole.

3:53:223:53:25

'Just dropped in the front and that was a big boost.

3:53:283:53:30

'It was a confidence builder, that par save.'

3:53:303:53:34

While the game plan of many was to keep their driver in the bag,

3:53:343:53:37

Scott used it often and well.

3:53:373:53:41

'I'm a good driver of the golf ball.

3:53:413:53:43

'I believe that's one of my strengths in my game

3:53:433:53:45

'and I felt Lytham was a perfect

3:53:453:53:48

'opportunity to use that.

3:53:483:53:50

'I didn't think it was an aggressive play or a risk.'

3:53:503:53:53

You know, I think the strategy was good for me.

3:53:533:53:56

I was playing to my strengths.

3:53:563:53:57

So was Ernie Els.

3:53:583:54:00

A round of 68 left him six adrift of Scott.

3:54:003:54:03

CHEERING

3:54:053:54:07

Playing really well from tee to green

3:54:093:54:11

And I did that in my previous two Opens at Lytham

3:54:113:54:14

and I felt I was really solid from tee to green.

3:54:143:54:16

I was hitting good putts,

3:54:163:54:18

but they weren't quite dropping.

3:54:183:54:20

-CROWD:

-Oh!

3:54:233:54:24

'I've been working on being a bit more patient,

3:54:243:54:27

'like I used to be when I was in my 20s.'

3:54:273:54:29

So it was just waiting for some putts to fall.

3:54:293:54:31

Halfway through his third round, Graeme McDowell was

3:54:353:54:37

stuck on 4-under and in danger of becoming detached.

3:54:373:54:41

APPLAUSE

3:54:423:54:43

I remember that back then on Saturday, I really did

3:54:433:54:46

feel like I clicked into a different level.

3:54:463:54:49

I was able to make a little bit of a late charge to be the guy

3:54:493:54:53

that maybe had a chance to look at him in the eye

3:54:533:54:55

on Sunday afternoon.

3:54:553:54:57

CHEERING

3:54:573:54:59

The putter was just in the groove

3:54:593:55:01

and, at that point, I thought, "Here we go."

3:55:013:55:03

Three birdies in five holes resurrected McDowell's championship.

3:55:043:55:08

'It really was just controlling the golf ball the way

3:55:103:55:12

'I wanted to be controlling it.'

3:55:123:55:14

I couldn't have played those last six or seven holes any better.

3:55:143:55:16

CHEERING

3:55:193:55:20

I guess the Donalds and the Westwoods and the Rory McIlroys

3:55:203:55:24

and the real home-grown stars were just kind of not firing

3:55:243:55:27

and I seemed to be the guy that was putting

3:55:273:55:29

myself on the leaderboard and they got right behind me.

3:55:293:55:33

APPLAUSE

3:55:333:55:35

'I felt great coming off the course.

3:55:353:55:37

'Got myself into the last group with Adam on Sunday

3:55:373:55:39

'and felt ready to go.'

3:55:393:55:41

Over the course of the back nine,

3:55:453:55:47

Tiger lost his momentum.

3:55:473:55:49

But a 70 kept him in the picture at 6-under.

3:55:503:55:53

APPLAUSE

3:55:583:56:00

He's a fantastic player and I was still amazed at the shots

3:56:003:56:04

he hit and the way he played.

3:56:043:56:06

I had a chance to shoot a better score than him,

3:56:073:56:10

but he still beat me by one nothing.

3:56:103:56:13

Snedeker signed for a 73, but his smile remained and, what happened

3:56:143:56:19

on the 18th green ensured the

3:56:193:56:21

feel-good factor carried into Sunday.

3:56:213:56:24

I'd watched that putt on 18 a couple of times

3:56:243:56:26

and seen how much guys were under-reading it

3:56:263:56:28

and it was breaking off the charge to the right and so I made myself

3:56:283:56:31

play a couple of extra inches of break

3:56:313:56:33

and I thought I hit it way too high.

3:56:333:56:35

'It was a good way to end the day.

3:56:413:56:43

'A day where I hadn't made any putts

3:56:433:56:45

'and really struggled from tee to green and I needed one.'

3:56:453:56:48

It was a long day, you know?

3:56:483:56:50

It was one of those days where anything at that point was welcome.

3:56:503:56:53

APPLAUSE

3:56:533:56:54

Scott didn't match Snedeker's birdie,

3:56:563:56:58

but a round of 68 meant a commanding four-shot lead.

3:56:583:57:02

With the most important round of his life ahead,

3:57:033:57:06

Scott was on the cusp of joining Peter Thomson, Greg Norman,

3:57:063:57:10

Kel Nagle and Ian Baker-Finch as an Australian winner of The Open.

3:57:103:57:14

On 11-under, he led by four, but with the menacing presence

3:57:173:57:21

of Woods and Els in striking distance, Scott wouldn't sleep easy.

3:57:213:57:26

The final day of the 2012 Open saw benign conditions

3:57:323:57:36

replaced by the first stiff breeze of the championship.

3:57:363:57:39

Adam Scott, though, was calm.

3:57:393:57:41

All the best, Adam.

3:57:413:57:43

Waking up at eight o'clock and having to wait till two to play,

3:57:433:57:47

I think I used all my nerves before I'd even gotten to the golf course.

3:57:473:57:51

Much excitement surrounded the arrival of the contenders.

3:57:523:57:56

-YOUNG GIRL:

-Hi, Tiger!

3:57:583:58:00

LAUGHTER

3:58:003:58:01

But under the radar slipped a three-time major champion,

3:58:013:58:04

quietly determined to end ten years in the wilderness.

3:58:043:58:08

You played great yesterday, Ernie. How excited are you now...?

3:58:083:58:11

'He's such a great player when the conditions get hard.'

3:58:113:58:14

He knew the wind was going to blow on Sunday

3:58:143:58:16

and I think that was what he wanted, you know?

3:58:163:58:20

Especially as far back as we were, to give us a chance.

3:58:203:58:23

For the chasers in need of encouragement,

3:58:243:58:27

a door opened on the 1st.

3:58:273:58:29

Scott dropped a shot

3:58:293:58:31

and his playing partner McDowell sensed an opportunity.

3:58:313:58:34

All of a sudden, I'm thinking, "I'll get this putt,

3:58:363:58:39

"just to start turning the screw a little bit here."

3:58:393:58:42

And it was nice, making that putt

3:58:443:58:46

and walking off to the 2nd tee box, thinking,

3:58:463:58:49

"Great, this is exactly what I wanted. This is the start I need."

3:58:493:58:52

But Scott's response could not have been more emphatic.

3:58:563:59:00

The Australian set up a birdie on the 2nd,

3:59:003:59:03

and despite dropping another shot on the 3rd,

3:59:033:59:06

didn't lose composure.

3:59:063:59:08

The bogeys early didn't rattle me too much.

3:59:103:59:13

Again, I was hitting good shots.

3:59:133:59:16

They just didn't quite pan out for me.

3:59:163:59:18

And no-one had come charging out of the blocks either,

3:59:183:59:21

so there was no need to panic yet.

3:59:213:59:24

As always, Tiger was creative.

3:59:253:59:28

APPLAUSE

3:59:293:59:32

Playing alongside him in the penultimate group,

3:59:343:59:37

Snedeker stayed 7-under with a battling 3 at the 5th.

3:59:373:59:41

APPLAUSE

3:59:423:59:45

The man from Tennessee was refusing to buckle.

3:59:453:59:48

Ernie Els bogeyed the 2nd,

3:59:543:59:56

and four holes later was staring at the prospect of another,

3:59:564:00:00

until saved by his short game touch.

4:00:004:00:02

APPLAUSE

4:00:024:00:06

Off at 9:25, Nicolas Colsaerts was an early starter.

4:00:104:00:14

His golf would be outstanding.

4:00:144:00:16

APPLAUSE

4:00:184:00:20

Everything just felt very smooth

4:00:234:00:27

and I was thinking very clearly on every shot.

4:00:274:00:30

The Belgian had sprung from the pack with a 65

4:00:324:00:35

to establish the clubhouse lead at 1-under.

4:00:354:00:38

I got into the recording,

4:00:414:00:43

and there was this guy in there who never smiled all week,

4:00:434:00:46

and I handed him my scorecard, and he checks the numbers,

4:00:464:00:49

looks at me, and goes...

4:00:494:00:51

So I'm thinking...

4:00:524:00:54

it was the first sign of a pretty good run of golf.

4:00:544:00:59

I got my first top 10 in a major.

4:00:594:01:01

While scoring was growing increasingly difficult,

4:01:044:01:07

Colsaerts had set the benchmark.

4:01:074:01:09

Scott led by 3.

4:01:114:01:13

Snedeker was holding firm and Woods lurked with intent.

4:01:134:01:17

On the 6th, Tiger had found the fairway.

4:01:204:01:23

Oh, stay straight!

4:01:264:01:28

Lucky.

4:01:284:01:30

Lucky.

4:01:304:01:31

-One yard.

-Yes.

4:01:344:01:36

'He had a great second shot,

4:01:364:01:37

'and then the wind took it just a little bit late,'

4:01:374:01:39

and he was in one of those bunkers,

4:01:394:01:41

and it's just a complete crapshoot, those bunkers.

4:01:414:01:43

-CROWD GROANS

-We walked around every bunker at the beginning of the week, and said,

4:01:454:01:49

"as long as you're in the middle of that bunker, you're OK."

4:01:494:01:51

You're never in the middle, you're always up against the lips.

4:01:514:01:54

He fought hard to get that ball out

4:01:544:01:56

and he did great to get it out in two.

4:01:564:01:58

APPLAUSE

4:01:584:02:01

And then he kind of compounded his mistakes by 3-putt,

4:02:014:02:03

and if he just makes double there and not triple,

4:02:034:02:06

you lose a shot, you lose a couple of shots,

4:02:064:02:09

that's going to happen, but triple is a killer.

4:02:094:02:11

It's just tough to get that kind of break on Sunday.

4:02:114:02:14

Woods plunged from 6- to 3-under,

4:02:154:02:18

his title aspirations dealt a crippling blow.

4:02:184:02:21

It was a fate about to be shared by Snedeker on the 7th.

4:02:254:02:29

I couldn't believe what had happened.

4:02:344:02:36

It was a swing you make and scratch your head and go, "What was that?

4:02:364:02:38

"I've never seen that before, can't remember the last time I did that.

4:02:384:02:41

"It is about as easy as it gets, what are you doing," you know?

4:02:414:02:44

And it just crept up at the wrong time on Sunday.

4:02:444:02:46

That is just what happens in majors.

4:02:464:02:48

They examine every part of your game.

4:02:484:02:50

As Snedeker ran up a seven,

4:02:504:02:52

Woods displayed the mental steel for which he is renowned.

4:02:524:02:56

APPLAUSE

4:02:564:02:58

Tiger's ambitions were still just about alive,

4:02:584:03:01

but Snedeker's died when another crooked tee shot on the 8th

4:03:014:03:05

ended up a second successive double bogey.

4:03:054:03:08

I hit a good shot down the right side,

4:03:104:03:12

and the wind grabbed it and took it straight left on that bunker,

4:03:124:03:14

and that's when you just can't hit it.

4:03:144:03:16

Any time you double holes in majors, you're giving up way too many.

4:03:164:03:19

You are double there, it's just a killer.

4:03:194:03:21

McDowell had parred the 5th, but having missed the green,

4:03:214:03:25

Scott faced a test of nerve to match his playing partner.

4:03:254:03:28

APPLAUSE

4:03:294:03:32

McDowell and Scott would bogey the 6th, but even so,

4:03:354:03:38

Scott remained where he had been overnight -

4:03:384:03:41

4 shots clear and the man to beat.

4:03:414:03:44

McDowell badly needed to apply pressure, and did so on the 8th.

4:03:504:03:55

APPLAUSE

4:03:554:03:58

Scott made only par,

4:03:584:04:00

presenting the Ulsterman with a putt to close the gap.

4:04:004:04:03

APPLAUSE

4:04:054:04:08

After a slow start, McDowell was finally building momentum.

4:04:104:04:14

Els, however, was in danger of surrendering it.

4:04:144:04:18

The bogey on 9 was a very soft bogey. I mean,

4:04:224:04:24

9 is one of the easiest holes on Lytham,

4:04:244:04:26

and I missed about an eight-footer there for par.

4:04:264:04:30

I still felt I was in the game for some crazy reason.

4:04:304:04:32

I just said, you know, I'm going to play this back now

4:04:324:04:35

as aggressive and as hard as I can.

4:04:354:04:38

6 adrift of Scott, Els had slipped back to 3-under.

4:04:394:04:43

APPLAUSE

4:04:464:04:50

Although it was a shortish putt,

4:04:504:04:52

those were the kind of putts that I had been missing.

4:04:524:04:55

APPLAUSE

4:04:574:04:59

'So, making the putt right in the middle with good speed,'

4:04:594:05:03

it gave me so much confidence.

4:05:034:05:05

Els parred the next before breathing even more life

4:05:064:05:09

into his revival on the 12th.

4:05:094:05:12

APPLAUSE

4:05:164:05:18

It came out perfect. It came out on the breeze,

4:05:184:05:20

up the bank, I mean, really close.

4:05:204:05:22

It's one of those putts you should make in your sleep,

4:05:224:05:25

but you know, under Open pressure, it's a whole different story.

4:05:254:05:28

The story had taken a new twist. Els now trailed Scott by only 4.

4:05:314:05:36

McDowell was 3 behind the leader, until the 9th.

4:05:384:05:43

I pulled the wrong club, probably. You know, I hit a nine iron,

4:05:444:05:47

trying to get a little baby cup nine iron in there.

4:05:474:05:49

In hindsight, it was a wedge shot all day.

4:05:494:05:51

I one-hopped it over the back and made bogey,

4:05:514:05:53

and it was a real momentum stopper.

4:05:534:05:56

As McDowell digested his mistake,

4:05:574:06:00

Scott was again in realistic birdie range.

4:06:004:06:03

He didn't capitalise, but it appeared not to matter.

4:06:074:06:10

The Australian remained 4 clear.

4:06:104:06:13

APPLAUSE

4:06:134:06:16

McDowell's error on the 9th was compounded

4:06:174:06:20

by another drop shot on the 10th.

4:06:204:06:22

Having come off bogeys on 9 and 10,

4:06:234:06:25

just tried to play the hole very aggressively.

4:06:254:06:29

Then, for some reason,

4:06:294:06:30

I just had bad pictures in my head of 11 all week.

4:06:304:06:33

I had this phobia of the right-hand side of this fairway.

4:06:334:06:35

I don't know why. And all of a sudden, at the last minute,

4:06:354:06:38

I had that swing on 11 on Sunday.

4:06:384:06:40

I just came straight over the top and just flat pole-hooked it.

4:06:434:06:46

Into the only few places on the golf course

4:06:494:06:51

where the ball is going to be unfindable and unplayable.

4:06:514:06:54

You know, my race was run, and all of a sudden,

4:06:574:06:59

there wasn't enough time left

4:06:594:07:01

for me to try and get back in the game.

4:07:014:07:03

Scott was keeping the challenges at bay with a succession of pars.

4:07:064:07:11

APPLAUSE

4:07:134:07:15

I was playing fairly conservative for most of the day Sunday,

4:07:154:07:20

and making sure I gave myself a couple of putts at par,

4:07:204:07:23

and par was never going to hurt me, because no-one was charging.

4:07:234:07:28

On the back 9, though, Tiger threatened to.

4:07:294:07:32

APPLAUSE

4:07:344:07:37

After a birdie at the 10th, another followed at the short 12th.

4:07:374:07:41

He was creeping closer to the lead.

4:07:414:07:43

APPLAUSE

4:07:434:07:46

Woods again felt it was game on, and so did Els.

4:07:494:07:52

But McDowell's hopes were fading.

4:07:524:07:55

Scott, though, stayed very much in command of his own destiny.

4:07:554:07:59

Royal Lytham's 14th hole can be a brute,

4:08:044:08:07

but with the wind helping,

4:08:074:08:09

Els gave himself a chance to move within 3 of the lead.

4:08:094:08:12

APPLAUSE

4:08:124:08:16

At the putt on 14, that was a big putt,

4:08:164:08:19

because there was another one just to keep a little momentum going.

4:08:194:08:23

APPLAUSE

4:08:274:08:30

You could just feel the energy raising all the time,

4:08:354:08:38

people out of the stands again.

4:08:384:08:40

I just felt the energy of the whole place,

4:08:404:08:42

where I was at that time, was just electrifying.

4:08:424:08:45

After par on the 15th,

4:08:494:08:51

Ernie's choice of driver on the 16th looked to have backfired.

4:08:514:08:55

Having ricocheted off a fence, he found the rough.

4:09:014:09:04

His hopes of a much-needed birdie diminished.

4:09:044:09:07

Back on the 14th, Scott was weighing up a putt

4:09:134:09:16

that would see him improve to 10-under.

4:09:164:09:19

Els chipped out, but he had to settle for a par,

4:09:224:09:26

missing a clear opportunity to make up ground.

4:09:264:09:28

Scott now had a putt to move 4 clear.

4:09:314:09:34

APPLAUSE

4:09:374:09:40

His grip on the title had never seemed tighter.

4:09:404:09:44

There are moments in championships which are key moments,

4:09:454:09:49

when you look back on them,

4:09:494:09:51

and it's almost as if the gods have got involved.

4:09:514:09:54

At that point, I think Scott, in his mind,

4:09:544:09:57

said, "OK, I am Open champion."

4:09:574:09:59

Tiger was now out of the reckoning

4:10:004:10:02

after making three consecutive bogeys from the 13th.

4:10:024:10:06

His fall left Scott and Els in a two-horse race.

4:10:094:10:13

With a closing round of 69, world number one Luke Donald

4:10:174:10:21

finished 2-under for the championship.

4:10:214:10:23

Donald was on the course for a top-five result.

4:10:294:10:32

So was Snedeker.

4:10:324:10:33

Els continued to prove stubborn, but Scott was almost there.

4:10:334:10:38

For him, pars were now priceless,

4:10:424:10:45

but on the 15th, a 4 is never easy to achieve.

4:10:454:10:49

Having found a greenside bunker, Scott chipped out,

4:10:544:10:58

leaving himself an eight-foot putt for par.

4:10:584:11:02

At those moments, where it is coming down to the wire

4:11:024:11:06

and you've got the lead and you've got to close the tournament out,

4:11:064:11:09

making a par putt like that is a huge momentum thing.

4:11:094:11:12

It is almost like a birdie at that point.

4:11:124:11:14

I saw Scotty walking over to the 16th tee,

4:11:194:11:22

and I saw he had his head down a little bit,

4:11:224:11:25

so I realised that he must have bogeyed 15.

4:11:254:11:29

Even so, there was no cause for panic.

4:11:304:11:33

Scott led by 3, and was safely on the 16th green for 2.

4:11:334:11:37

APPLAUSE

4:11:414:11:44

On the 17th, Els putted for birdie.

4:11:464:11:49

SOME GROANS

4:11:534:11:55

One hole back, Scott also putted for birdie.

4:11:594:12:04

While the first putt surprised me a bit,

4:12:074:12:09

that it kept breaking to the left at the end, I felt it was going

4:12:094:12:13

to stay very straight or even go to the right as it got to the hole

4:12:134:12:16

but it was a bit short and just kept breaking left.

4:12:164:12:19

I felt it was a left centre putt

4:12:204:12:23

with the wind blowing hard left to right

4:12:234:12:26

and I think I hit a fairly good putt and it just spun out.

4:12:264:12:31

The moment he bogeyed the 16th was the point

4:12:394:12:42

that everybody around thought, "Uh-oh, this could happen."

4:12:424:12:46

Now only two shots adrift,

4:12:484:12:49

Els had struck the ideal tee shot to attack the flag on the 18th.

4:12:494:12:54

I had only about 104 or 105 yards or something

4:12:554:12:59

but at that stage I had to give myself an opportunity to putt.

4:12:594:13:02

It was only once he'd hit the second shot, when we started walking up,

4:13:064:13:10

I looked at the board and said to him, "Ernie, look at the board."

4:13:104:13:13

All of a sudden Adam was going down 17 and he was only 18.

4:13:134:13:19

If Ernie can birdie the 18th, that makes those last two holes play

4:13:214:13:24

a little bit longer for Adam

4:13:244:13:26

and all of a sudden they stretched for miles.

4:13:264:13:29

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

4:13:374:13:40

I will never, ever forget that feeling when that putt went in.

4:13:424:13:46

I think it was the loudest roar of my career.

4:13:464:13:49

The ball just never left the hole.

4:13:504:13:52

The roar from the crowd was absolutely amazing.

4:13:554:13:58

There is no feeling like that and I just thought, "Well,

4:13:584:14:03

"there's still a chance, even in the play-off."

4:14:034:14:05

Wasn't thinking that was the putt that was going to win him the Open Championship.

4:14:074:14:11

Hearing the roar of Ernie, now it's fact.

4:14:154:14:18

I've got to make two fours to win the open.

4:14:184:14:20

I never really got super nervous. I felt I had everything under control.

4:14:224:14:26

It was important to now play the last two very solid.

4:14:274:14:30

Adam probably made his biggest long game mistake of the day on 17th.

4:14:384:14:42

The second shot to that left pin. He just did what you can't do there.

4:14:424:14:47

You can't miss that pin left.

4:14:474:14:48

His long game had been totally in control.

4:14:544:14:56

When I saw the ball in the air, the alarm bells started ringing in my head.

4:14:564:15:00

If Ernie had just buried the last, I'm thinking,

4:15:004:15:03

Adam makes a bogey here and the last is only going to be par

4:15:034:15:06

and it started to get tough to watch at that point.

4:15:064:15:09

That's the one I'd like to have over again out of them all

4:15:094:15:14

because my strategy for the hole was short and right,

4:15:144:15:16

and I hit the ball long and left.

4:15:164:15:19

It wasn't the worst shot. It was a bad shot given the circumstances.

4:15:194:15:24

Even then, a par would have maintained his one-shot lead.

4:15:314:15:35

As Els saw a play-off looming, Scott had this to stay alone at the top.

4:15:354:15:39

It never threatened.

4:15:484:15:50

Again, a little misread on that part.

4:15:524:15:54

It looked like it was coming down the hill to the right to me

4:15:544:15:58

but I think it was running so straight on the ridge, it just never moved right.

4:15:584:16:02

Scott and Els were now tied for the lead.

4:16:044:16:07

On the last green,

4:16:124:16:13

Snedeker had a putt to share third with playing partner Woods.

4:16:134:16:17

The 36-hole leader had supplied much entertainment

4:16:204:16:24

but so had Tiger who would occupy the top three in a major for the 24th time.

4:16:244:16:29

Back on the 18th tee, Scott faced a club selection dilemma.

4:16:364:16:40

Lots of people said to me that they were surprised

4:16:424:16:44

at Adam's club selection.

4:16:444:16:46

It's tough to know what to hit off that tee box.

4:16:464:16:49

There's no way to take trouble completely out of play.

4:16:494:16:52

It's not like I'm standing in the tee box going,

4:16:524:16:56

"Where's he going with this?"

4:16:564:16:57

He swung so well, it wasn't like alarm bells were going off.

4:16:574:17:01

He just needs to put a good swing on this.

4:17:014:17:03

To me, it wasn't a wrong club.

4:17:054:17:07

Wrong club or not,

4:17:094:17:11

Scott's ball came to rest in the worst place imaginable.

4:17:114:17:15

Reaching the green was now out of the question.

4:17:154:17:18

I was actually trying to call my wife and then the call came through.

4:17:204:17:25

It was Johann Rupert. He said to me, "He drove it into the bunker."

4:17:254:17:29

Then I thought, this could be a real turnaround.

4:17:314:17:36

At that point, you know what you have to do.

4:17:464:17:49

You just have to get it up and down.

4:17:494:17:51

It was falling down dead in line with the pin.

4:18:034:18:06

As it landed, it looked like it was getting the bounce up close but

4:18:064:18:11

maybe the wind was just starting a touch and it landed quite soft.

4:18:114:18:15

Still a really good shot under the circumstances

4:18:184:18:21

because at that point I've just got to give myself a chance

4:18:214:18:24

to make a putt to make the play-off.

4:18:244:18:26

The crowd's reaction was appreciation mixed with sympathy.

4:18:284:18:32

An hour before, Scott was set to lift the Claret Jug.

4:18:324:18:35

Now his fate hung on a single putt.

4:18:354:18:39

Ernie wasn't looking. He only needed to listen.

4:18:424:18:45

I was either going to hear

4:18:484:18:49

a Phil Mickelson roar of 2004 at the Masters

4:18:494:18:52

or hear the crowd when he missed the putt.

4:18:524:18:54

I knew the situation. This is a putt to get in a play-off at the Open.

4:18:594:19:04

Probably the biggest putt of my career.

4:19:044:19:06

It's a great moment. It's what you practise for, and the whole day,

4:19:074:19:11

I had such a calm feeling inside my body. It was strange.

4:19:114:19:17

I was very confident with what I was doing.

4:19:174:19:20

It felt like things were falling into place

4:19:204:19:22

and that's how I felt over that putt.

4:19:224:19:25

Less than an inch, and with it,

4:19:304:19:32

Adam Scott's dream of winning the 141st Open had gone.

4:19:324:19:37

I was...

4:19:494:19:51

disappointed.

4:19:514:19:53

I couldn't think clearly enough to understand what's happened

4:19:534:19:56

over the last four holes.

4:19:564:19:57

I let this tournament slip through my fingers, really.

4:19:574:20:01

I try not to live life with regrets or golf with regrets.

4:20:014:20:05

I wished I'd won the Open. I still can't imagine what that feels like.

4:20:064:20:11

But I believe more in my golf game than I ever did before.

4:20:134:20:17

It almost seems unfair that this is a player who played really hard

4:20:194:20:23

and really, really well

4:20:234:20:25

and it seemed as if his name was already on that Claret Jug,

4:20:254:20:29

and I think the class of Adam Scott

4:20:294:20:32

is the way he dealt with it afterwards.

4:20:324:20:34

He didn't have to come to the press interview but he did,

4:20:344:20:37

and that's a measure of the man.

4:20:374:20:39

That is a measure of the man.

4:20:394:20:42

Well...

4:20:484:20:49

It was a very sloppy finish by me.

4:20:494:20:54

You've got to play some good shots to win these golf tournaments

4:20:544:20:58

and I wasn't able to do that the last few holes.

4:20:584:21:01

Sure, I'm very disappointed.

4:21:014:21:03

He will go away, he will lick his wounds.

4:21:044:21:07

He's quite laid-back.

4:21:074:21:08

He'll probably go back home, get his surfboard out and go surfing.

4:21:084:21:12

I really do view the week as such a positive move for me.

4:21:184:21:21

For so long, I never even contended in majors.

4:21:214:21:24

The last two years I've really been a contender.

4:21:244:21:28

That's why I'm going in the right direction and this might be

4:21:284:21:32

the one last piece of the puzzle for me to get what I really want.

4:21:324:21:36

He posted three outstanding rounds in the 60s

4:21:394:21:42

but a closing 75 wasn't good enough.

4:21:424:21:45

Scott had been undone by four heartbreaking holes

4:21:464:21:50

and a superb back 9 from a veteran without a major title for 10 years.

4:21:504:21:55

A lot of the press, a lot of the media

4:21:584:22:00

and a lot of the people out there were like,

4:22:004:22:02

"He's done, he's washed up.

4:22:024:22:05

"He doesn't have it." He just proved a lot of people wrong.

4:22:054:22:09

It means everything because of where we were and I was really gone

4:22:144:22:18

and through a lot of work and a lot of perseverance, if you want to call it that,

4:22:184:22:23

a lot of help from a lot of people around me, a lot can be achieved.

4:22:234:22:27

The winner of the gold medal and the champion golfer of the year

4:22:274:22:31

is Ernie Els.

4:22:314:22:32

APPLAUSE

4:22:324:22:34

I first of all thought of Adam,

4:22:344:22:36

of being in a position where I've done exactly what he's done

4:22:364:22:40

and I know that feeling and it's not a great feeling.

4:22:404:22:44

First of all, I feel for my buddy Adam Scott.

4:22:444:22:48

He was genuinely feeling for me

4:22:484:22:50

although he must've been really excited to win the Open.

4:22:504:22:54

You're a great player, great friend of mine

4:22:564:22:58

and you're going to win many of these. You've got too much talent.

4:22:584:23:01

He was really kind in his words.

4:23:014:23:03

It's nice of him to do that in that moment when it should just be

4:23:034:23:07

elation for him and I was the guy to tone it down a little, I guess.

4:23:074:23:12

My other guy, Ricky Roberts, he's like a brother of mine

4:23:124:23:17

and without his help, I could never have done this.

4:23:174:23:20

I know he looks 60 but he's only 48.

4:23:204:23:23

I thought it was a bit cheeky, that!

4:23:254:23:27

I mean, he's not a spring chicken himself, is he?

4:23:294:23:33

It's just huge for him. Absolutely huge.

4:23:374:23:40

From where he was to achieve that. Absolutely phenomenal.

4:23:404:23:45

It's just given him such a belief that he can go on from here.

4:23:474:23:50

He's so talented, so gifted.

4:23:524:23:54
