The Best Bits BBC Children in Need

This is the home of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the

Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay, and last night was one of many

venues across the country opening its doors for a star-studded

evening of entertainment, to raise money for Children in Need. So come

in, as our man Clive Roderick gives you a taster of this year's best

# Wish I could be. For this year's appeal, at Sophie

Evans -- For this year's Children in Need Appeal, Sophie took some

time out of her busy schedule and travelled down the M4 to West Wales.

I am here at Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen, to meet a very special

little girl called Eloise. Hello! Hello. Eloise has to come into

hospital every few weeks for treatment. The nurses here give

Eloise antibiotics and other medications to keep her free from

life-threatening infections. When Eloise was born, she very quickly

developed symptoms of cystic fibrosis.

For Eloise, this means staying in hospital for weeks at a time, but

as a welcome distraction, this happens.

Are you ready for some magic? Craig Lewis is a professional

magician and entertainer. Children in Need helps pay for Craig to

visit hospitals and wings, taking children's minds off their

illnesses. When he comes in, she has a big

smile on her face and she loves the animals he makes. It makes a big

difference and it takes away some of the boredom and some of the play

-- and some of the things she has to have done to her.

It's a small thing, but for children like Eloise, it makes a

big difference. Just one example of how your donations to Children in

Need help children and young people We have already raised more money

than last -- than last year's appeal and some of the people who

made it happen are here. Staff and children had a day of fun

in their pyjamas and raised �1,080, some pyjama party!

Seven-year-old's Tolis talent was to race from Testa males score --

Chester racecourse to Llandudno. But the rain of pain, but next day,

he cycled off the 43 remaining miles, arriving at Llandudno at 7pm,

then he went home. �800 so far, but still collecting.

Rachel Cooke and her friends completed a walk in one an hour and

40 minutes, not as easy as they thought, but they raised �740

between them. Staff at this community hospital

dressed up in St Trinian's uniforms and pushed a hospital bed around

Holly had. They raised a massive �700.

gold medal performance? We put together 120 children from all over

Wales to form the Welsh Children In Need choir. Some of them came all

the way from Anglesey. There were also pupils from Rosepark. And

there are pupils from the school # When I grow up, I will be tall

trees. # You get to climb when you're

grown up. # And when I grow up, I will be

smart enough to answer all the questions that you need to know.

Well, you may be wondering what is going on, I have no idea either but

it seems like fun. This is Circus Eruption, a group which gets

funding from Children In Need. The things that happen here at the

Dylan Thomas Community School in Swansea are truly amazing. Josh was

born with a unique genetic condition which means he has severe

learning difficulties and struggles with speech and language. But here,

everyone concentrates on what they can do and not what they can't. How

has this group changed Josh? It has made him more outgoing, he loves

coming. He has gone from an insular boy to one who is making friends.

He is having a go at things that he would never have done without the

circus. Have you seen a big change in Josh? He has become more

confident and he has gone up to people in the shops and stuff and

said, can you help me with this? is more confident around other

people. I have been totally blown away by the young people and the

dedication of the volunteers here tonight. But there is a waiting

list for groups like this because of a lack of funding, but with your

help, many more places could be made available, so please, it

really does make a big difference. Thank you, what a great project. Do

They did amazingly well and raised �162. This leisure centre have got

the community involved in their fund-raising. The wheelchair

basketball club got sponsors from friends and family. They raised

childhood should be a special time, free from worry or responsibility.

But I want to tell you about some children who live in Wales who

don't have what most of us would call a normal childhood. This is

Wrexham and the children here are taking part in a group organised by

Barnardo's and funded by Children in Need. The children are all young

carers and today, quite rightly, they are dressed up as superheroes.

Because that is just what they are, heroes caring for others, sometimes

for up to 50 hours a week. It might involve caring for parents with a

disability or an illness, but some of these children care for parents

who can't look after themselves, through substance misuse or alcohol

abuse. So this group is fun, but it is also doing a vital job in a lot

of other ways. And if things do get more difficult at home, the kids

can receive the help that they and their families desperately need.

Your donations really help, because they keep activities like the one

in Wrexham going, and the children can forget about caring for a few

hours a week, and hopefully get back some of their childhood.

This leisure club in St Clare's had a water volleyball talent, a local

teams took part and of rugby club were the winners on the night.

Everybody raised �600 and the collection it is still going.

At this football club raised �44 by training in their pyjamas. I wonder

Strictly Come Dancing. From Television Centre, this is the

Strictly Come Dancing Children In Need special. Nice to see you to

see you. We have an audience of children. APPLAUSE We have two

superstar strictly celebrities waiting in the wings.

They are dying to get back here in the ballroom. -- Strictly. That is

right. Russell Grant, back on the dance floor, my dream has come true.

People of Great Britain, this is going to be a once-in-a-lifetime,

unmissable event. We have seen them before and we know what they can do.

were both great entertainment, but This is Nelville Street in Cardiff.

I live quite near here and I have driven down this road loads of

times. But until now, I have never noticed this place. This is Inroads

Street Drugs Project and I'm meeting up with Ross, whose job is

entirely funded by Children In Need. He wanted me to meet someone we're

going to call Scott. When Scott first came here he had big problems

at home and at school and he was using some pretty dangerous drugs.

14, 15 years old, that is when it started going wrong, when I started

drinking and smoking weed and stuff. The teachers said they saw a sudden

change in the way I was. My motivation in life, my aggression.

My mum, she was ashamed of me. Things came to a head when Scott

got in trouble with the police. desperate family member brought him

here to Inroads. Scott came here in crisis so he was in quite a bad

emotional state when he came in, so it was about calming him down and

establishing a relationship of trust. I think he knew some of the

risks but not all, and some of the substances he was using are quite

dangerous. Ross helped Scott out of a very dark place by being a good

listener and discussing the sorts of problems that using drugs can

bring. Thankfully things are looking up. Just getting along in

school and stuff. All of my teachers think I am a new student.

My life at home is different. My mum and dad say they have their old

son back. You are back in with them now? Yes, I am back in with my

parents. Without your donations, Ross would not be here doing this

vital work and Scott would almost certainly still be in that dark
