CHEERING

0:04:080:04:11

-Well done. How are you keeping?

-I'm great. How are you?

0:04:170:04:19

Not too bad at all.

0:04:190:04:20

Tell me, first of all - Pugwash. Any relation to Captain Pugwash?

0:04:200:04:23

-Where did the name come from?

-Yes, that was the name.

0:04:230:04:26

It was taken back in the mid-'90s by me because I looked like him,

0:04:260:04:30

and it went on and we got a lot of American fans.

0:04:300:04:32

It's the capital of Nova Scotia.

0:04:320:04:34

It also means "spiritual pool" in India.

0:04:340:04:38

-But it's a term in America that I can't say.

-OK.

0:04:380:04:40

-Why's that?

-I'll tell you afterwards.

-OK. Not on live TV?

-No.

0:04:400:04:43

Not on any TV!

0:04:430:04:45

Tell me about the musical influence of everyone in the band,

0:04:450:04:47

because you've been compared to...

0:04:470:04:49

People say your influence has been the Beatles, ELO, Beach Boys.

0:04:490:04:52

How do you feel about that?

0:04:520:04:53

Yes, we all love that trio of bands because they are the gods,

0:04:530:04:57

but Joey's into a lot of ska and reggae and soul,

0:04:570:05:00

as is Tosh. Small Faces, of course - a lot of great '60s bands.

0:05:000:05:04

I'm a big fan of the Move. '60s band ELO of course, as well.

0:05:040:05:08

And Shaun's into many things.

0:05:080:05:09

Talk to me about some of the album, because I know...

0:05:090:05:11

Maybe you haven't been asked this before, but you had a collaboration

0:05:110:05:15

-with Neil Hannon on a cricketing theme album.

-Who?

0:05:150:05:17

-I know - who's Neil Hannon?

-Dave Hammond.

0:05:170:05:19

We did BBC breakfast telly during the Duckworth Lewis Method thing...

0:05:190:05:22

-Ah.

-And he was introduced as Dave Hammond.

-No way.

0:05:220:05:25

So we call him Dave ever since.

0:05:250:05:27

Neil Hannon and the cricket theme. Tell me about the Duckworth Lewis Method.

0:05:270:05:31

We just wrote songs for other people.

0:05:310:05:32

We got to know each other in Dublin.

0:05:320:05:35

We just really got on very well and we wrote some songs together

0:05:350:05:37

for, like, Kylie Minogue and Tina Turner, but they weren't taken.

0:05:370:05:40

They were sent back and said, "Thanks very much, but..."

0:05:400:05:42

They were good songs, so we said one day, "What about cricket lyrics?"

0:05:420:05:46

Just for a laugh - instead of "I love you, you love me."

0:05:460:05:48

That was me talking to Dave, because we do love each other. We're in a relationship.

0:05:480:05:51

You're writing songs for Kylie Minogue,

0:05:510:05:53

is it difficult to have your song sent back?

0:05:530:05:56

-Is that kind of...?

-God, no.

0:05:560:05:58

I get milk sent back. I send everything back.

0:05:580:06:02

People send everything back to me.

0:06:020:06:03

No, it's never bothered me because these things are always taken on

0:06:030:06:06

by Swedish pop writers or whatever, people who are millionaires.

0:06:060:06:09

Sometimes one or two get through, but we were happy it came back to us

0:06:090:06:12

because it ended up being Ivor Novello nominated.

0:06:120:06:15

-Yay!

-Excellente.

0:06:150:06:17

I get a tenner every time I mention the Ivor Novello nomination.

0:06:170:06:20

Tell me about The Olympus Sound, your latest Pugwash collection.

0:06:200:06:23

-Yes.

-What has been the inspiration for the songs on that?

0:06:230:06:26

It was a pretty dark period in my life, the last couple of years.

0:06:260:06:29

I had a bit of a health scare and I gave up drink

0:06:290:06:31

and gave up all the bad things. I took up byying guitars.

0:06:310:06:35

There's a lot of kind of darkness to my stuff anyway,

0:06:350:06:40

a lot of dark edges and stuff, but it's always poppy.

0:06:400:06:43

There's always a bit of pop.

0:06:430:06:45

So it's a bit of a dark record but it's a very personal record as well,

0:06:450:06:48

but we made it as a band.

0:06:480:06:49

These four people here you see made that record in three weeks

0:06:490:06:52

in Dublin. We're very proud of it.

0:06:520:06:55

Now that that period maybe is behind you,

0:06:550:06:56

are you looking forward now to another album - a more upbeat album?

0:06:560:06:59

-Oh, for God's sake! Another one?!

-Another one, yes!

-I've had six!

0:06:590:07:03

God knows we've had six. We've a great back catalogue.

0:07:030:07:06

All our back catalogue is coming out in Japan next year

0:07:060:07:08

and we're going to get The Olympus Sound into America as well,

0:07:080:07:12

so we can't wait to go on tour there.

0:07:120:07:14

-Well, enjoy. Thomas, thanks a million for chatting. Thanks, lads, for being with us tonight.

-Thanks.
