17/10/2012 The National Lottery: Wednesday Night Draws

It is Wednesday, it is the 17th October, and it is OJ. Thank you.

Good evening and welcome, coming up tonight, we have the opportunity to

win big with the Thunderball and Lotto draws. First it is time to

check out the finalist in the Environment category for this

year's National Lottery Awards. Once we have shown you all three,

pick your favourite and vote for it. I will tell you how later. First up

Landscape Project. This is a partnership of passionate people,

to really restore the up land of the south Pennines. For donkeys

years they have been polluted with the industrial factories of

Manchester and Yorkshire, this is about the people of the up land

that really care, making a difference. The Graz has ban

project which stemmed from restoring the water catchment areas.

I have realised how important it is to this environment and the area

that we live in, that we are enhancing the areas. You probably

get out most days on the bike, running or climbing up here, and

just a great reck Croatianal resource. We have never had the

resours of a National Park and lottery money has allowed us to go

out to schools, we have spoken to over 2,000 pupils, so we have been

able to take the story of the landscape back into the towns and

cities.. We have apprentices and volunteers and the smile on their

face when they talk about the project. What they have learned

from it. The friend they have made. It has been fantastic. We will show

you the final two projects in the Environment category later on.

time to see the final two projects in the Environment category, of

this year's National Lottery award. First up is Harvest Brighton and

Since harvest has started we have more than doubled the number of

community vegetable gardens and we know that thousands of people are

growing their own, through the training courses and volunteering

opportunities. The share scheme, that is where we match people who

have a garden who they are not using with someone who is looking

for space to grow. We are both in soulless flats, if that is fair to

say. With no garden. Discovered the scheme and we were matched up.

know, having the opportunity to use the garden and to come in contact

with nature, it is really, it makes a lot of difference for my life.

Our demonstration vegetable garden is one of the biggest parks in

Brighton and Hove, it is not a place you usually expect to see

vegetables growing. It is to show people what they can grow. I was

unemployed. It got me out. I met new people I got me working, a

self-employed gardener. It has changed my life a lot. And the

final project in the Environment category is community space

Community space challenge is about young people aged 8-17. It is young

people who are at risk of offending. It is about giving young people

something positive to do. They learn skill, they will learn how to

work as part of a team and more importantly how to interact with

other people in their community. got involved in the project through

a few of my friend, they were going to allotments and just seeing there

was getting their hands dirty and I thought why not? I just haven't

stopped since then. The project here has taken what was just a

pretty untidy bit of Tarmac. They have created planting bed, they

have replaced an unattractive wall with a mural. It is after

officialing. This has helped turn my life round. It made me realise

not all young people are bad. They can change themselves round. It is

critical to get staff to care about the young people. The results are

priceless. That is why we are grateful to the National Lottery

for supporting this work. That is all three finalist, head on line,

Allsobrook who scooped the Lotto jackpot on Saturday 6th October. We
