I'm passionate... Sorry. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
Well, it's hardly chopped the teat off | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
so I don't think it's quite that drastic. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
I think he wants to be put back in his place. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54

It's one of the basics of gardening. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
If you don't get that right, then... Ooh! | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
This is horrible. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12

If he spoke to me like that on my farm, | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
I'd have sent him straight out that gate. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
Each of them desperate to convince the experts | 0:01:26 | 0:01:29
they're worthy of the title. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31

So, judges, what are we thinking? Ooh, that's not a good face. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:42

I am gagging for the first place. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
With the pressure and time limit, you make mistakes. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
But who will sink and who will swim? | 0:01:51 | 0:01:55
Four talented carpenters but only one winner. | 0:01:55 | 0:02:00
Hello, I'm George Lamb and welcome to the show. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
Over the last few weeks we've seen Britain's young talent | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
battle it out to prove they're the very best. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
Tonight, it's time for the carpenters | 0:02:16 | 0:02:18
to let their hands do the talking. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
No time for a builder's tea break, | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
because this is Young Carpenter Of The Year. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:24
Hundreds applied, but only the best made it through | 0:02:27 | 0:02:31
to a gruelling test and rigorous interview, | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
where they had to prove their knowledge and passion for their subject. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:36
-Wood is my passion. -I do think I could be Young Carpenter Of The Year. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:40
It's a bit of a geeky thing to admit. Especially for a girl. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:44
The top 20 had to face the judges | 0:02:44 | 0:02:45
as their carpentry skills were put to the test | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
in a nerve-wracking practical challenge. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:50
Absolutely buzzing. Let's see what's next. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
I've got my fighting spirit. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
With only four places in the final, the competition was fierce | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
and the splinters were flying. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
But, finally, four were chosen. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
I eat, sleep, breathe carpentry and joinery. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:09
I'm totally ecstatic, over t'moon. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
I was winning national competitions against 25-year-olds when I was 19. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:14
I've got what it takes to win it. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:17
Now that final four must chisel, saw and hammer their way | 0:03:17 | 0:03:21
to become our first-ever Young Carpenter Of The Year. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
Time to meet the men who need steady hands and nerves of steel. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:28
Finalist number one, from Leeds, | 0:03:39 | 0:03:41
it's competitive carpenter with a heart, | 0:03:41 | 0:03:43
22-year-old Tirbhavan Singh Chodha. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:45
I've got a great passion for carpentry | 0:03:45 | 0:03:48
and I just want to be an ambassador for the trade. | 0:03:48 | 0:03:50
Our second finalist may be the youngest here, but he's certainly no junior in the carpentry stakes, | 0:03:54 | 0:03:59
it's 19-year-old Tom Barker from Derbyshire. | 0:03:59 | 0:04:03
I've had quite a lot of experience, | 0:04:03 | 0:04:05
so I'll take that into the final so I can win it. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:07
Finalist number three eats, sleeps and breathes carpentry. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:13
From Durham, it's 22-year-old Karl Barker. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:16
I've worked really hard through my apprenticeship, | 0:04:16 | 0:04:19
I've set up my own business | 0:04:19 | 0:04:21
and this would really be the icing on the cake for me. | 0:04:21 | 0:04:23
Last, but by no means least, is our fourth finalist. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:29
Heritage carpenter to the royals, it's 20-year-old Peter Kernan. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:34
I'm determined to be the best | 0:04:34 | 0:04:35
and I'll spend hours and hours on a job until it's perfect. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:38
OK, lads, well done for getting through to the final, | 0:04:41 | 0:04:45
but have you got what it takes | 0:04:45 | 0:04:48
to impress these top-notch men of carpentry? | 0:04:48 | 0:04:50
He's a jack of all trades and a master of carpentry, | 0:04:50 | 0:04:54
it's Jai Godwin. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:55
Jai's top-drawer client list includes Robbie Williams, Madonna and Jamie Oliver, | 0:04:59 | 0:05:03
and he's been dubbed the Rock And Roll Builder. | 0:05:03 | 0:05:06
An expert in listed-building renovation | 0:05:06 | 0:05:09
and modern interior design. | 0:05:09 | 0:05:11
Jai Godwin is the ultimate go-to man in carpentry. | 0:05:11 | 0:05:16
I love the smell of wood, | 0:05:16 | 0:05:18
I love the feel of wood. | 0:05:18 | 0:05:20
I guess it's just ingrained in me. | 0:05:20 | 0:05:22
I don't like a bad attitude. | 0:05:22 | 0:05:25
I like somebody who can, kind of, take the criticism, | 0:05:25 | 0:05:28
move on, learn from it and adapt and listen to what I say, | 0:05:28 | 0:05:30
cos I know what I'm talking about. | 0:05:30 | 0:05:32
What he doesn't know about carpentry, | 0:05:32 | 0:05:34
you could write on the head of a nail. | 0:05:34 | 0:05:36
Meet Phill Williams. | 0:05:36 | 0:05:38
Phill's the international man of carpentry, | 0:05:38 | 0:05:42
learning his trade whilst travelling the world. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:45
His passion for restoring listed properties | 0:05:45 | 0:05:47
and his love of all things wood | 0:05:47 | 0:05:49
means he likes to keep it traditional. | 0:05:49 | 0:05:52
Carpentry to me isn't about earning big bucks. | 0:05:52 | 0:05:54
Sitting at a workshop here, I've got the river. | 0:05:54 | 0:05:57
You can be repairing a boat one day | 0:05:57 | 0:05:59
and tomorrow, I might be fitting a worktop somewhere else. | 0:05:59 | 0:06:03
You don't have to go to university to be Young Carpenter Of The Year, | 0:06:03 | 0:06:06
that's what makes it special. | 0:06:06 | 0:06:08
If you have a passion for the material | 0:06:08 | 0:06:11
and an understanding of the tools | 0:06:11 | 0:06:13
and you've got that skill set, that's all you'll need. | 0:06:13 | 0:06:16
Phil, what are you going to be looking for in this competition? | 0:06:16 | 0:06:19
I think, to be the best, you have to be able to innovate. | 0:06:19 | 0:06:22
-I want to see people that love wood, that want to be able to use it. -OK. | 0:06:22 | 0:06:25
Jai, what are you going to look for | 0:06:25 | 0:06:27
in arguably the four best young carpenters in the country? | 0:06:27 | 0:06:30
To cut it, you've got to be single-minded, but, above all, | 0:06:30 | 0:06:33
hardworking, so some serious hard graft's what I want to see. | 0:06:33 | 0:06:37
All right. It's almost time to get things started. | 0:06:37 | 0:06:40
Our judges have devised four very tough carpentry challenges. | 0:06:40 | 0:06:44
What you're about to experience will be more gruelling | 0:06:44 | 0:06:48
than the trickiest of customers you've ever had to deal with. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:52
So, this is the warm up before the big game. | 0:06:55 | 0:06:58
We're going to test all of those essential skills | 0:06:58 | 0:07:01
that you need to be a carpenter. | 0:07:01 | 0:07:02
And all they really need to do here, is measure twice, cut once, | 0:07:02 | 0:07:06
but keep one eye on the clock. | 0:07:06 | 0:07:08
OK, gentlemen, we know you've probably fitted | 0:07:08 | 0:07:11
more skirting boards than I've had hot dates, | 0:07:11 | 0:07:14
but for your first challenge, | 0:07:14 | 0:07:16
we want to see who's the sharpest tool in the box, | 0:07:16 | 0:07:19
able to negotiate our intricate maze of skirting. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:23
And with just 45 minutes to complete the task, | 0:07:23 | 0:07:26
this will be carpentry under pressure. | 0:07:26 | 0:07:29
It's time to set the benchmark. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:32
Let's get going. | 0:07:32 | 0:07:33
It's the crucial first challenge to find Young Carpenter Of The Year, | 0:07:38 | 0:07:41
and for our four opponents, it's a race to their tool bags. | 0:07:41 | 0:07:45
As the battle begins to see who will be crowned king of the carpenters. | 0:07:45 | 0:07:49
Our judges have conceived an intricate maze | 0:07:52 | 0:07:55
that will test our finalists' precision in basic carpentry. | 0:07:55 | 0:07:59
So, they have to measure, cut and fit eight joints, | 0:08:00 | 0:08:03
fixing the pieces of skirting to the maze, | 0:08:03 | 0:08:06
which has various levels of difficulty. | 0:08:06 | 0:08:09
From a standard, outside, 90 degree angle | 0:08:09 | 0:08:12
to the toughest, inside, 135 degree angle. | 0:08:12 | 0:08:15
They only have enough wood to complete the maze, | 0:08:15 | 0:08:18
so any mistakes and they've blown it. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:20
With power tools banned and a strict time limit, | 0:08:23 | 0:08:26
this is a chance for the judges to see | 0:08:26 | 0:08:28
how they perform under intense pressure. | 0:08:28 | 0:08:30
Judges, why skirting? | 0:08:31 | 0:08:33
It looks quite simple, but it tests every single skill of a carpenter, | 0:08:33 | 0:08:38
and that's your cutting and that's your measuring, | 0:08:38 | 0:08:41
and if these guys can't do that at this stage, they've got no chance. | 0:08:41 | 0:08:45
But perfectionist Tibby hasn't even touched the skirting. | 0:08:45 | 0:08:49
Instead, he kicks off by constructing | 0:08:49 | 0:08:51
a wooden template with guide slots | 0:08:51 | 0:08:53
that he hopes will create precise joints every time. | 0:08:53 | 0:08:56
You're the only one who's made a mitre box, Tibby. | 0:08:58 | 0:09:01
Aye, well... Preparation, isn't it? | 0:09:01 | 0:09:03
Do you think your mitre block's going to help you in the time? | 0:09:03 | 0:09:06
Yeah, I think it'll, hopefully, help me, yeah. | 0:09:06 | 0:09:09
But could this meticulous approach cost him? | 0:09:09 | 0:09:12
Cutting these angles, we should be able to do them freehand. | 0:09:12 | 0:09:16
I admire him for doing it, but I just worry | 0:09:16 | 0:09:20
that Tibby doing that is eating too much into his time. | 0:09:20 | 0:09:23
The other three carpenters have measured and cut | 0:09:24 | 0:09:27
their skirting and begin to attach sections to their maze. | 0:09:27 | 0:09:32
But the judges have spotted that Tom, the youngest competitor, | 0:09:32 | 0:09:37
is already cutting corners. | 0:09:37 | 0:09:39
What's the craic with Tom, guys? | 0:09:39 | 0:09:41
The first length of skirting, he had it sprawled out across the bench. | 0:09:41 | 0:09:45
He was, kind of, leaning on it. | 0:09:45 | 0:09:46
He didn't choose to clamp it or anything. We're just concerned, | 0:09:46 | 0:09:49
you know, is he going to get a precise cut? | 0:09:49 | 0:09:52
I think he's feeling the pressure a little bit. | 0:09:52 | 0:09:55
-How are we doing, Karl? -Not too bad. | 0:10:01 | 0:10:03
-You've got more on than anybody else, I think. -You're going for it, Karl. | 0:10:03 | 0:10:06
How do you think your angles are coming up, there? | 0:10:06 | 0:10:09
Uh, not great after being used to modern-day power tools, but... | 0:10:09 | 0:10:14
What if you're working somewhere where you can't get power, then? | 0:10:14 | 0:10:17
We're in the middle of the countryside, there's no power. | 0:10:17 | 0:10:20
-Then I'd have to do it this way, wouldn't I? -Yeah. | 0:10:20 | 0:10:22
Or hire a generator. | 0:10:22 | 0:10:24
Cheeky, chippy Karl certainly knows how to handle his wood. | 0:10:28 | 0:10:33
If anybody's better than me then I'd like to see what they're doing. | 0:10:33 | 0:10:37
Carpentry is his life. He absolutely loves it. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:41
But grafter Karl hasn't always had it his own way. | 0:10:41 | 0:10:45
When I got made redundant | 0:10:45 | 0:10:47
it was pretty much the worst feeling in the world. | 0:10:47 | 0:10:52
Not one to stay down for long, | 0:10:52 | 0:10:54
Karl set out to prove he's the best in HIS business. | 0:10:54 | 0:10:58
I set up my own carpentry business. | 0:10:58 | 0:11:00
It's a good feeling. It's probably the best thing that I've ever done. | 0:11:00 | 0:11:04
He's going to make a future for himself | 0:11:04 | 0:11:06
and, fingers crossed, that's what'll happen. | 0:11:06 | 0:11:08
And winning Young Carpenter Of The Year | 0:11:08 | 0:11:11
would mean everything to Karl. | 0:11:11 | 0:11:13
Deep down, I am gagging for the first place. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:17
I mean, that's where I want to be. | 0:11:17 | 0:11:19
Back in the competition, and with the clock ticking, | 0:11:22 | 0:11:24
the carpenters have picked up the pace. | 0:11:24 | 0:11:27
Karl has fixed the most skirting board on, but now seems to be taking it off. | 0:11:29 | 0:11:34
He seemed to get off to an absolute flyer, and I noticed he took | 0:11:34 | 0:11:37
a couple of pieces of skirting board off. | 0:11:37 | 0:11:39
I don't know if he's spotted something and he's trying to re-address the quality | 0:11:39 | 0:11:43
which is great, but I'm just a little bit concerned, | 0:11:43 | 0:11:45
cos they've only got enough skirting to do the whole lot. | 0:11:45 | 0:11:49
It's the critical halfway point. | 0:11:49 | 0:11:51
Of the seven sections of skirting to attach, | 0:11:51 | 0:11:54
perfectionist, Tibby, only has two pieces on his maze. | 0:11:54 | 0:11:58
Tom has three sections and Peter also has three sections in place. | 0:11:58 | 0:12:01
But they're all far from finished and the judges are worried. | 0:12:01 | 0:12:06
They're all struggling for time, aren't they now? Everyone. | 0:12:10 | 0:12:13
Yeah. I can't see any of them, at this rate, finishing. | 0:12:13 | 0:12:16
Our royal carpenter, Peter, is not used to deadlines. | 0:12:16 | 0:12:19
It seems time's not an issue for HIS boss. | 0:12:19 | 0:12:22
You were obviously doing a lot of really intricate work, | 0:12:22 | 0:12:26
so must be used to a fairly high standard of finish. | 0:12:26 | 0:12:28
There's never time limits at the castle, | 0:12:28 | 0:12:30
just take as long as you need, | 0:12:30 | 0:12:32
as long as it's a good job at the end of it. | 0:12:32 | 0:12:34
Out of hundreds of young applicants, | 0:12:34 | 0:12:36
Peter struck gold and landed his dream job | 0:12:36 | 0:12:39
at one of the most prestigious addresses in the country. | 0:12:39 | 0:12:42
Windsor Castle. | 0:12:42 | 0:12:44
He might be in sumptuous surroundings, | 0:12:44 | 0:12:47
but with about 1,000 rooms full of historic timber, | 0:12:47 | 0:12:50
he's certainly got his graft cut out. | 0:12:50 | 0:12:53
A heritage carpenter by royal appointment, | 0:12:53 | 0:12:55
Peter believes he's a cut above. | 0:12:55 | 0:12:59
There is more skill in heritage joinery, | 0:12:59 | 0:13:01
because rather than making something new to go in a square frame | 0:13:01 | 0:13:04
it's going to be how to twist and how to square, | 0:13:04 | 0:13:07
so it just seems more difficult and more interesting. | 0:13:07 | 0:13:09
And then it goes back in, it could be there for 300 or 400 years again | 0:13:09 | 0:13:13
and the Queen could be using it every day | 0:13:13 | 0:13:15
when she's walking her corgis. | 0:13:15 | 0:13:18
Peter's lucky, there's only a few carpenters working in private residences | 0:13:18 | 0:13:21
of members of the royal family, | 0:13:21 | 0:13:23
so, yeah, he is, pretty much, one of the chosen few. | 0:13:23 | 0:13:26
And our right, royal chippy | 0:13:26 | 0:13:28
wants to be the jewel in the crown of carpenters. | 0:13:28 | 0:13:31
It would mean a lot for me to win. | 0:13:31 | 0:13:33
I'm going to go into the competition and give it 110% | 0:13:33 | 0:13:38
-Are you happy with your work so far? -Uh, it's not too bad. It could be better. -What could be better? | 0:13:38 | 0:13:42
There's a few gaps there, that's not going back to the wall, but... Painter can fill it. | 0:13:42 | 0:13:47
-PETER LAUGHS -Can he? Costs money, though. | 0:13:47 | 0:13:49
It's not a job for one's servants, Peter. | 0:13:50 | 0:13:53
Pete concerns me. His attitude was one of, you know, | 0:13:53 | 0:13:57
"It's OK, the decorators'll get over it." | 0:13:57 | 0:14:00
And, you know, this guy works at Windsor Castle. | 0:14:00 | 0:14:03
You can't pass it on to traders down the line. | 0:14:03 | 0:14:06
You've got to do your work good enough, get it done. | 0:14:06 | 0:14:09
With minutes to go, the carpenters knock their skirting into shape. | 0:14:09 | 0:14:13
They're all battling to finish in the time allowed, | 0:14:13 | 0:14:16
and Tibby is seriously focused. | 0:14:16 | 0:14:18
-Are you happy with your joints? -Yeah. I mean, with the time limit, | 0:14:19 | 0:14:23
I think it couldn't be any better, really. | 0:14:23 | 0:14:26
Exhausted, they make a final push to the finish line. | 0:14:27 | 0:14:31
Start thinking about finishing up! | 0:14:31 | 0:14:34
Gentlemen, five... | 0:14:38 | 0:14:40
four... | 0:14:40 | 0:14:41
three... | 0:14:41 | 0:14:43
two... | 0:14:43 | 0:14:44
one, and tools down, please. | 0:14:44 | 0:14:47
Your time's up, step away from your skirting boards. | 0:14:47 | 0:14:51
Our young carpenters were floored by the challenge | 0:14:54 | 0:14:58
and none of them completed their maze. | 0:14:58 | 0:15:00
Now it's down to judges Phill and Jai, | 0:15:00 | 0:15:04
too men who never skirt round the issues. | 0:15:04 | 0:15:06
-Tibby. -All right? -Not seeing that much down there. Are you happy? | 0:15:06 | 0:15:10
Well... I mean, I could have done more, but, obviously, | 0:15:10 | 0:15:13
I took a bit of time producing my mitre box. Um... | 0:15:13 | 0:15:17
With hindsight, do you think maybe you should have done those by eye a little bit more, then? | 0:15:17 | 0:15:21
Maybe I could have done, but I just wanted them to be perfect. | 0:15:21 | 0:15:25
The judges were impressed with Tibby's perfectionist nature, | 0:15:25 | 0:15:28
but does quality win over quantity in their minds? | 0:15:28 | 0:15:32
I tried jumping on to that side, which isn't easy to do. | 0:15:32 | 0:15:35
What was the thinking behind that, Tibby? | 0:15:35 | 0:15:38
I wanted to impress you. Obviously, these are easy. | 0:15:38 | 0:15:40
90 degree mitres. I thought I might as well take a risk. | 0:15:40 | 0:15:43
-Gave it my best shot, and, uh, hopefully it's good enough. -All right, Tibby. | 0:15:43 | 0:15:47
I concentrated too much on the quality than the quantity, | 0:15:48 | 0:15:51
but I think the quality of my work were quite good, | 0:15:51 | 0:15:54
probably better than some of the other lads that did more than me. | 0:15:54 | 0:15:57
-How're we doing, Karl? -All right. | 0:15:58 | 0:16:00
Well, that's a big old gap in the middle there, mate! | 0:16:00 | 0:16:04
I mean, I don't have any formal qualifications | 0:16:04 | 0:16:06
but that's probably not right, is it? | 0:16:06 | 0:16:08
-Definitely not right. -Karl started with all guns blazing, | 0:16:08 | 0:16:11
but hit a stumbling block halfway through the challenge, | 0:16:11 | 0:16:14
and his rushed approach has led to shoddy workmanship. | 0:16:14 | 0:16:18
You seemed to get off to a real flying start, Karl, | 0:16:18 | 0:16:21
and then I noticed, did you take something off and start again | 0:16:21 | 0:16:24
because you wasn't happy, or...? | 0:16:24 | 0:16:26
Um... I just, kind of... | 0:16:26 | 0:16:29
I started with this piece. | 0:16:29 | 0:16:31
It was about a mil too long, so I shaved a little bit off there | 0:16:31 | 0:16:34
because it was just bringing this piece slightly proud. | 0:16:34 | 0:16:37
Big mistake, really, so... | 0:16:37 | 0:16:39
Your mission statement, Karl, is that you consistently deliver. | 0:16:39 | 0:16:44
-Do you think you've done that here? -No, in all honesty. | 0:16:44 | 0:16:47
Just on that piece there, I don't think I've hit it on the money. | 0:16:47 | 0:16:50
-But that aside, you're happy with everything else? -Yeah. -OK. | 0:16:50 | 0:16:53
It does feel like a bit of a personal attack. | 0:16:55 | 0:16:58
That's probably because I enjoy what I do so much | 0:16:58 | 0:17:00
that it is my passion, and to hear something like that, it does... | 0:17:00 | 0:17:04
It does, kind of, get to you. | 0:17:04 | 0:17:05
Although not used to working against the clock at the castle, | 0:17:05 | 0:17:08
our royal carpenter, Peter, has actually got the most skirting on. | 0:17:08 | 0:17:13
-Are you happy? -Er, it could have been better. -Yeah? | 0:17:13 | 0:17:15
-I could have finished it. -Of course you didn't finish it. | 0:17:15 | 0:17:18
-Well, you're not used to time constraints, are you? -No. | 0:17:18 | 0:17:22
-What do you think of your hammering? -Well, yeah. | 0:17:22 | 0:17:24
A couple of times there was half moon marks on it. | 0:17:24 | 0:17:26
We already established, though, the decorator was going to get that. | 0:17:26 | 0:17:30
-I was joking when I said that, but, yeah... -OK. OK. | 0:17:30 | 0:17:33
I don't think, even if I did it again | 0:17:33 | 0:17:35
with a different mindset, I'd get it all finished. | 0:17:35 | 0:17:38
I think the time restraint was just too tight. | 0:17:38 | 0:17:40
Our teen carpenter, Tom, | 0:17:40 | 0:17:42
never really recovered from his wobbly start | 0:17:42 | 0:17:44
and of the four, has achieved the least. | 0:17:44 | 0:17:47
I mean, in the heats, Tom, your work was some of the best work. | 0:17:47 | 0:17:51
But here, you know, we've got some gaps on all of those joints. | 0:17:51 | 0:17:56
I found it very challenging under pressure, so... | 0:17:56 | 0:17:58
I feel I could have done better, really. | 0:17:58 | 0:18:01
-Would the client be happy with those? -No, I wouldn't say so. | 0:18:03 | 0:18:06
-Even this one, look. -No. -Sticking out a bit. | 0:18:06 | 0:18:08
Really, I know I can do a lot better, but it's just being under pressure and everything | 0:18:08 | 0:18:13
and then nothing really worked out. | 0:18:13 | 0:18:15
Jai, what's going on? They couldn't finish it. | 0:18:19 | 0:18:21
I know. I'm really, really disappointed. I'm shocked, actually. | 0:18:21 | 0:18:25
I was expecting at least one of them to get round and complete it. | 0:18:25 | 0:18:28
Absolutely. Well, let's run through them. Tibby. | 0:18:28 | 0:18:31
The mitre block, what it showed to me was attitude. He wanted to make the perfect job. | 0:18:31 | 0:18:35
And really, out of all the contestants, | 0:18:35 | 0:18:38
it's his passion that's really shone through. | 0:18:38 | 0:18:40
Tom. What happened to Tom? He just lost it, he just melted. Fell apart. | 0:18:40 | 0:18:46
He's still learning, it's an intimidating environment. We've said it throughout this challenge, | 0:18:46 | 0:18:50
it's basic, module one carpentry. Nothing was glued, he didn't even attempt to fix anything. | 0:18:50 | 0:18:56
He had that moment where he had the wood wobbling about, | 0:18:56 | 0:18:59
wobbling all over, wanding his wood around the workshop, didn't he? It was all floppy. | 0:18:59 | 0:19:03
Karl, I had high hopes with Karl coming in here, | 0:19:03 | 0:19:06
but again, with a bit of pressure, maybe... | 0:19:06 | 0:19:08
He was like a bull in a china shop, you know? He's a strapping lad, | 0:19:08 | 0:19:12
he's got the gusto, he's got the force, | 0:19:12 | 0:19:15
but I think that showed in some of his work. | 0:19:15 | 0:19:17
The first thing you do is you plan it out in your head. | 0:19:17 | 0:19:19
You make a mental note of what it is that you've got to do. | 0:19:19 | 0:19:22
And I didn't see any of them do that, | 0:19:22 | 0:19:24
especially Karl, unfortunately. | 0:19:24 | 0:19:26
I wouldn't want a price off any of these to put skirting round my room. | 0:19:26 | 0:19:29
-Peter. -He did, out of all four, put the most wood on to that template. | 0:19:29 | 0:19:34
When he started, he got off to a really slow start, | 0:19:34 | 0:19:38
and he made that point about, "You can take your time," | 0:19:38 | 0:19:40
which is all right if you're working for the Queen, | 0:19:40 | 0:19:43
but working for the public, you can't do that. | 0:19:43 | 0:19:45
When he said about, again, | 0:19:45 | 0:19:47
just letting a decorator come in after him and finish. | 0:19:47 | 0:19:49
Now, he said he was joking, but it's an attitude thing. | 0:19:49 | 0:19:52
There's one thing I cannot stand and that's tradesmen passing it off on to the following tradesman. | 0:19:52 | 0:19:57
Carpenters. Time to find out what our experts think. | 0:20:00 | 0:20:05
Let's start off with Tibby, please, gentlemen. | 0:20:05 | 0:20:08
Tibby. I loved the fact that you wanted to tackle the difficult part | 0:20:08 | 0:20:11
of the challenge and jump to those difficult cuts. | 0:20:11 | 0:20:14
Disappointed you didn't finish, | 0:20:14 | 0:20:16
and that goes for the other finalists as well, | 0:20:16 | 0:20:19
so maybe in the next round it's just to have a bit more of a plan. | 0:20:19 | 0:20:22
Tom. Youngest person here. | 0:20:22 | 0:20:24
You're still, really, at the start of you career. | 0:20:24 | 0:20:27
You knew today, some of your joints weren't quite there. | 0:20:27 | 0:20:30
Just start to think ahead a little bit more, | 0:20:30 | 0:20:33
understand what you've got to do. | 0:20:33 | 0:20:35
You proved that you're a great carpenter. That's why you're here, | 0:20:35 | 0:20:38
-you just need to show us that. -Karl, | 0:20:38 | 0:20:41
a little bit more attention to detail, you know? Have a plan. | 0:20:41 | 0:20:44
You know how much time we're getting allotted for these challenges. | 0:20:44 | 0:20:48
Try and break that down into minutes and divide up your time, | 0:20:48 | 0:20:51
what you need to get done. | 0:20:51 | 0:20:52
Peter. I just worry a little bit about your attitude. | 0:20:52 | 0:20:55
You made a couple of remarks, there. | 0:20:55 | 0:20:57
Again, for the next round, focus, start thinking about you, | 0:20:57 | 0:21:01
as a carpenter, out in the real world | 0:21:01 | 0:21:04
and just take it that one little step further. | 0:21:04 | 0:21:07
Judges, if you did have to send somebody home now, who would it be? | 0:21:07 | 0:21:12
I think after this round it would be... | 0:21:12 | 0:21:15
Tom. | 0:21:15 | 0:21:16 | |
-How about you, Phil? -Yeah, Tom. | 0:21:16 | 0:21:19
All right, chaps. The good news is nobody is going home at this stage. | 0:21:20 | 0:21:24
You've still got another round to impress, all right? | 0:21:24 | 0:21:29
The bad news is, one of you will be leaving after the next challenge. | 0:21:29 | 0:21:34
After such a dressing down from the judges, | 0:21:34 | 0:21:38
our contenders friends and families are on hand to offer their support. | 0:21:38 | 0:21:42
The judges just, really... Cos mine weren't up... | 0:21:44 | 0:21:47
As good as everyone else's, then, | 0:21:47 | 0:21:49
if it would be a knock-out this round then I would come out. | 0:21:49 | 0:21:52
On your next challenge, just see what it is, plan it out, | 0:21:52 | 0:21:57
take it carefully and do the best you can. | 0:21:57 | 0:22:00
-They weren't happy with a couple of comments I made and my attitude, so... -Attitude to what? | 0:22:00 | 0:22:05
Attitude to the work, I imagine, | 0:22:05 | 0:22:07
so I'll just try and not talk as much to them next time. | 0:22:07 | 0:22:09
They were impressed with, like, using my initiative | 0:22:09 | 0:22:12
and jumping from that side to that other side, | 0:22:12 | 0:22:15
which I could have... | 0:22:15 | 0:22:17
Really, I should have started on that side first. | 0:22:17 | 0:22:20
It was just one silly mistake. I don't feel threatened by that, so... | 0:22:20 | 0:22:25
Well, I think, you know, it's pressure, isn't it? | 0:22:25 | 0:22:27
For this next challenge, you might think we've gone slightly quackers, | 0:22:31 | 0:22:35
but believe me, there is method to our madness. | 0:22:35 | 0:22:39
Most carpenters love to be creative, and in this challenge, | 0:22:39 | 0:22:42
our finalists are certainly going to get the chance | 0:22:42 | 0:22:44
to show us their artistic flair. | 0:22:44 | 0:22:46
Since the time of Noah's Ark, we've always known | 0:22:46 | 0:22:50
that wood can make a great floating home for our animal friends, | 0:22:50 | 0:22:54
and it just so happens that we've got some ducks... | 0:22:54 | 0:22:57
DUCKS GABBLE ..in need of a new home on the water, | 0:22:57 | 0:23:01
and then it's up to you to design and build | 0:23:01 | 0:23:04
a floating palace for our feathered friends. | 0:23:04 | 0:23:07
It just needs to include a pitched roof. | 0:23:07 | 0:23:10
Jai, what are you going to be looking for in the duck houses? | 0:23:10 | 0:23:13
I'd like to see the guys' personalities come through. | 0:23:13 | 0:23:16
It's their chance to get creative. | 0:23:16 | 0:23:18
-Phil? -I want to see a beautifully pitched roof. | 0:23:18 | 0:23:20
It's difficult to do a roof. | 0:23:20 | 0:23:22
Gentlemen, you each have to design a duck house that floats, | 0:23:22 | 0:23:26
but you do not have a lot of time. | 0:23:26 | 0:23:28
Just 90 minutes, to be exact. | 0:23:28 | 0:23:30
Your time starts now. Let's get "quacking". | 0:23:30 | 0:23:35
The carpenters are against the clock | 0:23:37 | 0:23:40
to knock up a knock-out home for their feathered friends. | 0:23:40 | 0:23:43
They've been given the base, but need to make sure | 0:23:45 | 0:23:48
the finished product stays balanced and afloat, | 0:23:48 | 0:23:50
so design and preparation are critical. | 0:23:50 | 0:23:53
Can I get a little look at that sketch | 0:23:53 | 0:23:56
that you've knocked up already? | 0:23:56 | 0:23:58
Right, you've just drawn a hexagon. | 0:23:58 | 0:24:00
You're taking a bit of a gamble that it's all going to come together at the top, yeah? | 0:24:00 | 0:24:05
-Yeah. -OK. | 0:24:05 | 0:24:06
They have free rein on the style of their ducks' digs, | 0:24:08 | 0:24:11
but their floating homes must have a pitched roof. | 0:24:11 | 0:24:14
That's a sloping roof to you and I. | 0:24:14 | 0:24:16
This will be a real test | 0:24:17 | 0:24:19
of a carpenter's technical ability to measure angles | 0:24:19 | 0:24:22
and work out mathematically how the wood comes together. | 0:24:22 | 0:24:26
In this all-important second challenge, | 0:24:26 | 0:24:29
no-one wants to be a sitting duck, | 0:24:29 | 0:24:31
as after this, one of them will be going home. | 0:24:31 | 0:24:35
And with just 90 minutes to complete the challenge, | 0:24:36 | 0:24:40
this really will sort out the men from the boys. | 0:24:40 | 0:24:42
In the last challenge, Karl's bullish approach | 0:24:45 | 0:24:49
didn't impress the judges, but this time, he isn't jumping in feet first. | 0:24:49 | 0:24:52
So, this is good prep work he's doing? | 0:24:52 | 0:24:56
-Yeah, yeah. -He's using his vice as well, thinking on his feet. | 0:24:56 | 0:25:00
He's one of the few that's not put a ring of wood around the bottom. | 0:25:00 | 0:25:03
On a wooden base, you don't need the ring around the bottom. | 0:25:03 | 0:25:06
Which is saving time. | 0:25:06 | 0:25:09
Peter, our carpenter to the Queen, is making his excuses. | 0:25:09 | 0:25:13
Or possibly looking for a royal pardon? | 0:25:13 | 0:25:16
I've never done a roof since college, so... It's going to be making it up as I go along, really. | 0:25:16 | 0:25:21
You've got to think on your feet as a carpenter. | 0:25:21 | 0:25:23
You've done that, you can do this. | 0:25:23 | 0:25:25
It'll be roof-shaped at the end, and water-tight. | 0:25:25 | 0:25:29
-And good enough for ducks. -Good enough for royal ducks? | 0:25:29 | 0:25:32
-Or swans. -Or swans, OK. | 0:25:32 | 0:25:34
Ooh, posh. | 0:25:34 | 0:25:36
Tibby's pursuit for perfection | 0:25:40 | 0:25:41
hindered his chances in the first task, | 0:25:41 | 0:25:43
so this time, he's keeping it simple. | 0:25:43 | 0:25:46
I've got this as a template, so... | 0:25:46 | 0:25:48
So, this drawing you've got here, this is your roof design, yeah? | 0:25:48 | 0:25:51
I'm going to put a rafter here, a rafter here... | 0:25:51 | 0:25:54
A bit of improvisation as we go along. | 0:25:54 | 0:25:56
Tibby is a top-notch carpenter | 0:25:56 | 0:25:57
with six years experience under his tool belt. | 0:25:57 | 0:26:01
But this talented tradesman lacks just one basic skill. | 0:26:01 | 0:26:05
He struggles to cut corners. | 0:26:05 | 0:26:07
Anything I do, I like to do to the best of my abilities. | 0:26:08 | 0:26:12
I mean, even if something's not going to be seen, | 0:26:12 | 0:26:14
I like to do it as it's going to be seen, so, | 0:26:14 | 0:26:16
I'm a bit of a perfectionist. | 0:26:16 | 0:26:19
And this perfectionist nature has won him a wall full of awards | 0:26:19 | 0:26:22
and a legion of fans. | 0:26:22 | 0:26:24
Well, his own family. | 0:26:24 | 0:26:26
He's always had a lot of patience. | 0:26:26 | 0:26:29
When he's done anything, he's taken a lot of time | 0:26:29 | 0:26:32
to finish something off. | 0:26:32 | 0:26:35
He's always followed everything through, | 0:26:35 | 0:26:38
so, yeah, we're very proud of him. | 0:26:38 | 0:26:40
Tibby also uses his talents for a greater good. | 0:26:42 | 0:26:45
He recently transformed the holy room at his local Sikh temple. | 0:26:45 | 0:26:49
To transform this room, altogether it took, probably, about a year. | 0:26:49 | 0:26:52
That was working nights, weekends, | 0:26:52 | 0:26:54
sometimes we were doing all-nighters. | 0:26:54 | 0:26:56
But it was... I really enjoyed it. | 0:26:56 | 0:26:59
Voluntary work, in Punjabi it's called seva, | 0:27:03 | 0:27:05
which means "selfless service". | 0:27:05 | 0:27:07
Sikhs are encouraged to do selfless service, not just in Sikh temples | 0:27:07 | 0:27:12
but in hospitals, old people's homes and community centres, so... | 0:27:12 | 0:27:16
I like to always put something into the community. | 0:27:16 | 0:27:18
I feel a great sense of satisfaction inside. | 0:27:20 | 0:27:23
Back on the shop floor, | 0:27:26 | 0:27:27
the judges are looking for the best designer duck house, | 0:27:27 | 0:27:31
and Karl has got some big ideas. | 0:27:31 | 0:27:34
-That's going to be the top. -I've got you now, right. | 0:27:34 | 0:27:37
There's going to be, um...some pillars there for it to stand on. | 0:27:37 | 0:27:40
And that'll sit on top and then, hopefully... Go in over there. | 0:27:40 | 0:27:43
-These are massive ducks, Karl. -They are big ducks. | 0:27:43 | 0:27:46
They're huge ducks, OK. | 0:27:46 | 0:27:48
The clock is counting down and the judges are in the hush room | 0:27:50 | 0:27:53
to assess what the boys have knocked up so far. | 0:27:53 | 0:27:56
Peter, who's our heritage carpenter, he should be able to build us something beautiful | 0:27:56 | 0:28:00
and can sit in the garden of the Queen. | 0:28:00 | 0:28:02
But he's saying he's not experienced at roofing, | 0:28:02 | 0:28:04
so is he going to fall over with that roof? I'm worried. | 0:28:04 | 0:28:07
He's continually, kind of, making these excuses | 0:28:07 | 0:28:10
before he's made the mistake. | 0:28:10 | 0:28:12
Perfectionist Tibby, is following a basic design, | 0:28:12 | 0:28:15
but for him, the devil's in the detail | 0:28:15 | 0:28:17
and he seems to have forgotten there's also a deadline. | 0:28:17 | 0:28:21
Perfection's coming at a price. He seems way behind, at the moment. | 0:28:21 | 0:28:25
It's quite a simple design, he's doing, | 0:28:25 | 0:28:27
and he's still taking quite a while to do it. | 0:28:27 | 0:28:29
19-year-old Tom has taken on board the judges' comments from the first challenge, and is motoring through. | 0:28:29 | 0:28:35
He's a lovely lad, and I think he has the ability... | 0:28:35 | 0:28:37
He's definitely got the ability. He is a great carpenter, that's why he's here. | 0:28:37 | 0:28:41
I just want to see some passion coming out of him. | 0:28:41 | 0:28:44
Hopefully he can let it go in the next 20 minutes. | 0:28:44 | 0:28:47
-How did you get into carpentry? -Ever since I were at school, really. | 0:28:47 | 0:28:51
I've always enjoyed it and then me teachers | 0:28:51 | 0:28:55
kept pushing me and pushing me, cos I weren't the best | 0:28:55 | 0:28:57
at maths and English, this is what I could do. | 0:28:57 | 0:29:00
So I took it for GCSE and I come out top in the school. | 0:29:00 | 0:29:03
-Oh, well done, mate. -You have to do what you're interested in. | 0:29:03 | 0:29:06
Absolutely, mate. | 0:29:06 | 0:29:07
Tom, the youngest in the competition, | 0:29:07 | 0:29:10
was never one for burying his head in books, | 0:29:10 | 0:29:12
but found his confidence in carpentry. | 0:29:12 | 0:29:15
Tom struggled at school, | 0:29:15 | 0:29:18
but he found woodwork was something which he could gain points with. | 0:29:18 | 0:29:25
And because he's really tried, look what can happen. | 0:29:25 | 0:29:30
I mean, he could come home from school, | 0:29:32 | 0:29:34
lose himself in the garage for hours | 0:29:34 | 0:29:36
just messing about with wood, cutting and carving. | 0:29:36 | 0:29:39
He's gone from cluttering the house with his school woodwork projects | 0:29:39 | 0:29:44
to the consummate career carpenter for a home reservations company, | 0:29:44 | 0:29:48
tackling the countless timber-based tasks that come his way. | 0:29:48 | 0:29:52
I fit doors, windows, kitchens, all the little niggly bits. | 0:29:52 | 0:29:55
-LAUGHTER OFF CAMERA -Sometimes, too many to remember. | 0:29:55 | 0:29:58
I fit doors, windows, kitchens, | 0:29:58 | 0:30:01
stairs, roofing, stud work. We do absolutely everything. | 0:30:01 | 0:30:04
And winning the competition would be the final seal of approval. | 0:30:04 | 0:30:09
If I won Young Carpenter Of The Year, it would be a brilliant thing. | 0:30:09 | 0:30:12
It would really give him confidence and make him flourish even more. | 0:30:12 | 0:30:18
15 minutes left, guys. 15 minutes to go. | 0:30:18 | 0:30:22
With time running out, | 0:30:22 | 0:30:25
the carpenters are hard pushed to complete their homes on the water. | 0:30:25 | 0:30:30
Karl's house is on a grand scale, but has he set the bar too high? | 0:30:30 | 0:30:35
-Pretty ambitious design, that. -That is a very ambitious design. | 0:30:35 | 0:30:38
-You're a brave man. -Ambition's good, though. I like to see that. | 0:30:38 | 0:30:43
The judges are worried that Tom's house is still missing | 0:30:43 | 0:30:47
an essential element. | 0:30:47 | 0:30:49
The pitched roof. | 0:30:49 | 0:30:50
There needs to be a miracle, there needs to be a roof under that bench. | 0:30:50 | 0:30:54
I just cannot see him finishing or getting anywhere near done. | 0:30:54 | 0:30:58
Gentlemen, you've got five minutes to go. Five minutes left! | 0:30:58 | 0:31:03
With just minutes left, the boys are pulling out all the stops | 0:31:06 | 0:31:10
to try and complete the challenge. | 0:31:10 | 0:31:12
I see smoke. I see smoke. | 0:31:12 | 0:31:14
Five, four, three, | 0:31:15 | 0:31:19
two, one. | 0:31:19 | 0:31:21
Tools down, please. | 0:31:21 | 0:31:23
Time's up, and the judges need a closer look. | 0:31:23 | 0:31:27
Tom got the basic structure but, after a disastrous last round, | 0:31:28 | 0:31:32
has he done enough to stay in the competition? | 0:31:32 | 0:31:35
Tommy. | 0:31:35 | 0:31:37
Oh, dear. | 0:31:40 | 0:31:41
What happened? | 0:31:41 | 0:31:42
I've got a basic idea what I'm doing but it's going to take time. | 0:31:42 | 0:31:46
Well, I think what you've done you've done well. | 0:31:46 | 0:31:49
It's just a shame you didn't get a bit further down the road with it. | 0:31:49 | 0:31:53
Yeah. | 0:31:53 | 0:31:54 | |
You just need to pick that pace up, and I think you'd have got that roof on. | 0:31:54 | 0:31:59
Perfectionist Tibby went back to basics with his design. | 0:31:59 | 0:32:02
He's got the pitched roof, but it looks like that's all he's got. | 0:32:02 | 0:32:07
-You did spend a long time doing all this beautiful detail up here. -Yeah. | 0:32:07 | 0:32:11
I didn't want to leave sharp edges, because my initial plan was to put | 0:32:11 | 0:32:15
felt strips down here and on the top as well, just obviously waterproof. | 0:32:15 | 0:32:20
But I just ran out of time. | 0:32:20 | 0:32:22
Karl's grand design looks impressive, | 0:32:22 | 0:32:26
but is it enough to wow the judges? | 0:32:26 | 0:32:28
You're happy with the height for the duck? | 0:32:28 | 0:32:31
-Yeah. Definitely. -We can get a first floor in there as well. | 0:32:31 | 0:32:35
-Upstairs and downstairs. -You're definitely ambitious. | 0:32:35 | 0:32:38
The final round before the elimination, so I just went all-out. | 0:32:38 | 0:32:43
Royal carpenter Peter was out of his comfort zone in this challenge, | 0:32:44 | 0:32:48
but has he managed to pull off a floating palace? | 0:32:48 | 0:32:51
-It's good. -I think you've cracked on really well with it. | 0:32:52 | 0:32:55
I'm really impressed by it. | 0:32:55 | 0:32:57
And, you know, it's a good design, I think. | 0:32:57 | 0:33:00
You know, it's whether it's going to float, and our ducks like it. | 0:33:00 | 0:33:04
Karl's calmed down a little bit now. | 0:33:06 | 0:33:09
The nerves have subsided a little bit | 0:33:09 | 0:33:11
and he's just trying to focus on what he's doing, basically. | 0:33:11 | 0:33:15
But I think maybe he's been a little bit too ambitious. | 0:33:15 | 0:33:18
Tom's done extremely well. He's had some difficulty | 0:33:18 | 0:33:20
but he's doing the best he can under the circumstances. | 0:33:20 | 0:33:25
I think Peter's duck house is looking OK. | 0:33:25 | 0:33:27
I'd have liked to have seen him do more to the roof | 0:33:27 | 0:33:29
rather than concentrate on the sides. | 0:33:29 | 0:33:32
His mother's been waiting about two years for one! | 0:33:32 | 0:33:35
Tibby's played it safe. At least it's got a roof on. | 0:33:35 | 0:33:39
I just hope it floats. And all the ducks are dry! | 0:33:39 | 0:33:44
Gentlemen, I'm sure you didn't think we were going to end this without putting your duck houses to the test. | 0:33:46 | 0:33:52
Can we have the doors open, please? | 0:33:52 | 0:33:55
It's the moment of truth. Will the duck houses sink or swim? | 0:33:57 | 0:34:03
So, this is it, carpenters. Please release your houses. | 0:34:08 | 0:34:14
How we doing? It's all right, they're all floating. So far, so good. | 0:34:17 | 0:34:21
-Perfect. They're all floating. -Could we bring in the ducks, please? Bring in the ducks! | 0:34:22 | 0:34:27
QUACKING | 0:34:29 | 0:34:31
# All the ducks are swimming in the water... # | 0:34:31 | 0:34:37
Never really commentated on ducks finding homes before. | 0:34:37 | 0:34:40
They're thinking about it, they're circling. | 0:34:44 | 0:34:48
Here we go. Come on. | 0:34:48 | 0:34:50
Yeah! We've got a winner, guys! We've got a winner! | 0:34:50 | 0:34:55
QUACKING | 0:34:57 | 0:34:59
All right, all right, all right. | 0:34:59 | 0:35:02
The thing with Tibby was there was too much time spent on trying to do all the intricate bits and pieces. | 0:35:08 | 0:35:14
And he just got bogged down in that detail. | 0:35:14 | 0:35:17
I think, out of all of them, his was maybe the best, sort of, finished. | 0:35:17 | 0:35:23
Whether it was the design that I liked most, I'm not quite sure. | 0:35:23 | 0:35:26
Tom, for me, he didn't seem to have a clear enough design in his head. | 0:35:26 | 0:35:31
We said to him that he needed to up his game. For whatever reason, | 0:35:31 | 0:35:35
he didn't do it. | 0:35:35 | 0:35:36
Karl. Bit of an ambitious design. I liked it, though. | 0:35:36 | 0:35:41
I just wish he'd have got a bit more of the outside or the roof on. | 0:35:41 | 0:35:44
We talked about how high his house was, would the ducks love it. They were the first ducks on board. | 0:35:44 | 0:35:49
Peter. I still don't quite get him. | 0:35:49 | 0:35:53
You know he's got the skill but he keeps making excuses for himself | 0:35:53 | 0:35:57
and why he's not doing good enough work. | 0:35:57 | 0:36:00
I've said all along it's about attitude. Attitude is something you've either got or you haven't. | 0:36:00 | 0:36:06
Carpenters, our judges have seen your skills over two rounds. | 0:36:06 | 0:36:12
-Phill, if you'd like to start the feedback with Tibby, please. -Yeah. | 0:36:12 | 0:36:16
Your duck house, although I'm still questioning | 0:36:16 | 0:36:19
whether that's a duck house, on the water it looked OK. | 0:36:19 | 0:36:24
Tom, what you did actually do, I think, | 0:36:24 | 0:36:27
had you had time to finish it, would have been, in my opinion, | 0:36:27 | 0:36:31
the best one, because I think you worked to a pretty high standard. | 0:36:31 | 0:36:35
Karl, we gave you some advice and you came out and you listened. | 0:36:35 | 0:36:39
Your design was bold but you only had so long in this task | 0:36:39 | 0:36:42
and you were well short of finishing. | 0:36:42 | 0:36:45
Peter, your attitude is still not there at the moment. | 0:36:45 | 0:36:49
I feel like you're making a lot of excuses about why you can't do something. | 0:36:49 | 0:36:53
The reality is, you can. | 0:36:53 | 0:36:55
The first carpenter to leave the competition... | 0:36:55 | 0:37:00
..is Tom. | 0:37:05 | 0:37:08
Although the judges were impressed by Tom's commitment to carpentry, | 0:37:15 | 0:37:20
in the first round he got lost in the maze of skirting board | 0:37:20 | 0:37:23
and in the second challenge the judges were looking for | 0:37:23 | 0:37:26
a spark of creativity, but his duck house failed to come up to the mark. | 0:37:26 | 0:37:31
Overall, I chose the most complicated design, so, yeah, | 0:37:33 | 0:37:37
if I had got it all done it would have been the wow factor | 0:37:37 | 0:37:40
and it would have been impressive, but I just couldn't get it all done. | 0:37:40 | 0:37:45
Yeah. Well done. | 0:37:45 | 0:37:47
Well done for getting through to the final three, guys. | 0:37:47 | 0:37:50
-Peter, how are you feeling? -Relieved. -You think you can get a little more positive? -Mm, yeah. | 0:37:50 | 0:37:55
-The "mm" before the "yeah", Peter, that's hardly positive. -Yeah. | 0:37:55 | 0:37:59
'I thought the feedback was bang on.' | 0:37:59 | 0:38:02
I've got to keep my design more simple and deliver a really good piece of carpentry. | 0:38:02 | 0:38:06
'I'm hoping I'll stick around for the final' | 0:38:06 | 0:38:09
and hopefully get better each time and hopefully win the title. | 0:38:09 | 0:38:12
'I'm glad I got through. I don't really understand what they mean about me attitude still.' | 0:38:12 | 0:38:17
I'll try to change it again, but I tried changing it for this round and it didn't make any difference. | 0:38:17 | 0:38:22
Coming up, we tighten the vice, | 0:38:22 | 0:38:24
as the remaining three get the grilling of their lives. | 0:38:24 | 0:38:27
Not too sure on that one. It's not something that I use. | 0:38:27 | 0:38:30
Do you want to keep thinking? | 0:38:30 | 0:38:32
And the final two go head-to-head in the ultimate test | 0:38:32 | 0:38:35
to determine who will take the title. | 0:38:35 | 0:38:39
The first young Carpenter Of The Year is... | 0:38:39 | 0:38:44
So, gentlemen, time for our judges to find out a little bit about you, | 0:38:44 | 0:38:49
find out just how passionate you are about your profession. | 0:38:49 | 0:38:53
-Are you ready, Tibby? -I'm ready, yeah. -Yeah? | 0:38:53 | 0:38:55
-The judges are through there. Good luck, mate. -Cheers. | 0:38:55 | 0:38:58
Tibby, in manufactured boards, what does the term letter MR stand for? | 0:39:07 | 0:39:12
-Moisture resistance. -BING! | 0:39:12 | 0:39:14
-Moisture resistant? -BING! | 0:39:14 | 0:39:18
-Moisture resistant? -BING! | 0:39:18 | 0:39:21
When using an air compressor, | 0:39:21 | 0:39:22
which three items of safety clothing should you wear? | 0:39:22 | 0:39:27
Er, you should have your safety goggles on and, I would say, some gloves. | 0:39:27 | 0:39:32
Some protective...gloves. | 0:39:32 | 0:39:35
Do you want to keep thinking? | 0:39:35 | 0:39:37
-I'm not sure on that one. -BUZZER | 0:39:37 | 0:39:40
Goggles | 0:39:40 | 0:39:42
Dust mask. | 0:39:43 | 0:39:45
-And earplugs. -BUZZER | 0:39:47 | 0:39:48
-Goggles, ear defenders and boots? -BING! | 0:39:50 | 0:39:53
What is the name of the vertical structure that divides a window into sections? | 0:39:53 | 0:39:58
-Er, a transom. -BUZZER | 0:39:58 | 0:40:01
-Mullion? -BING! | 0:40:03 | 0:40:05
-Er, that would be a mullion. -BING! | 0:40:05 | 0:40:08
OK, Karl, which is the odd one out, | 0:40:08 | 0:40:10
a half lap, a scarf joint or a loose tongue? | 0:40:10 | 0:40:15
-Loose tongue. -BING! | 0:40:16 | 0:40:18
-You've done plenty of these. -Yeah, I know what a half lap is. Scarf joint... | 0:40:21 | 0:40:25
I think I know what that is. Loose tongue... | 0:40:25 | 0:40:29
-I'd say a scarf joint. -BUZZER | 0:40:29 | 0:40:31
-Going to go for loose tongue. -BING! | 0:40:35 | 0:40:37
Why do you think you should be Young Carpenter Of The Year? | 0:40:37 | 0:40:41
I've got great passion, committed, dedicated. | 0:40:41 | 0:40:44
I think I'm just very creative, very innovative. | 0:40:44 | 0:40:47
I love the passion of working at Windsor Castle and fixing something the Queen or the Duke might use, | 0:40:47 | 0:40:53
doors and gates that have been there for hundreds of years. | 0:40:53 | 0:40:56
Could you see you being there for hundreds of years? | 0:40:56 | 0:40:59
Maybe not hundreds of years but hopefully a few, 50, 60 years. | 0:40:59 | 0:41:03
I think I'm 110% passionate about what I do. | 0:41:03 | 0:41:07
It is a big part of my life, so I'm just trying my best to get there. | 0:41:07 | 0:41:12
Anything I do, I do to perfection, and I use the correct methods, | 0:41:12 | 0:41:16
-and I think I should be the Young Carpenter Of The Year, yeah. -Thank you. -Thanks. Cheers. | 0:41:16 | 0:41:21
In the grilling, Karl answered seven out of the ten questions correctly. | 0:41:23 | 0:41:29
Tibby did better, with eight. | 0:41:29 | 0:41:31
But in this round Peter had the highest score, of nine. | 0:41:31 | 0:41:35
'I think I did quite well, to be honest with you.' | 0:41:37 | 0:41:40
I slipped up on a couple, but...I was quite quick. I'm not sure if that was a good thing. | 0:41:40 | 0:41:46
-I got a couple of questions wrong, two or three, I don't know. -How many questions were there? -About ten. | 0:41:46 | 0:41:52
I think I've done enough to stay. | 0:41:52 | 0:41:55
In the practical I've used the correct methods all the time, | 0:41:55 | 0:41:59
which none of the other competitors did. | 0:41:59 | 0:42:02
'I felt I could have done better. I think it would be a shame if I went, failing on a few theory questions.' | 0:42:02 | 0:42:08
I'd be quite disappointed if I left now, but I've done my best, so I'm pleased with that. | 0:42:08 | 0:42:13
Jai, I've got a smile on my face, because they all did so well. | 0:42:14 | 0:42:18
None of them have surprised me. They've all raised their game. | 0:42:18 | 0:42:21
We knew that Karl was good technically. Tibby too, to be fair. | 0:42:21 | 0:42:25
-Yeah, Tibby too. -Peter surprised me. | 0:42:25 | 0:42:27
I didn't think he'd know that much technically, looking at his job. | 0:42:27 | 0:42:31
If we look over the three challenges, though, who enthuses, | 0:42:31 | 0:42:34
who makes you believe that they can create something wonderful for you? | 0:42:34 | 0:42:40
I believe, in this industry, | 0:42:40 | 0:42:42
you have to sell yourself as much as your craft. | 0:42:42 | 0:42:45
It's so, so tough, and I thought it was going to be easy. The fact is that one of them has to go. | 0:42:45 | 0:42:51
We've got three carpenters, only two places in the final. | 0:42:56 | 0:42:59
If we can start with Tibby, please. | 0:42:59 | 0:43:02
Tibby, I believe you have the passion and you have the finesse, | 0:43:02 | 0:43:06
all the things that I'd require as a potential employer or a client. | 0:43:06 | 0:43:11
But you really do need to find a balance between that perfectionism | 0:43:11 | 0:43:14
and keeping up the momentum. | 0:43:14 | 0:43:17
Peter, I know you love carpentry, | 0:43:18 | 0:43:22
that to you this is more than a trade, this is a skill for you. | 0:43:22 | 0:43:26
But I worry about where you'd go from Windsor Castle. | 0:43:26 | 0:43:29
For you to get through, Peter, I have to see that ambition from you. | 0:43:29 | 0:43:34
Karl, you've got the skill and the craft, | 0:43:37 | 0:43:42
but I do believe you are overambitious. | 0:43:42 | 0:43:44
You attack things without much forethought. | 0:43:44 | 0:43:48
I worry that you haven't got that balance between getting the job done and creating something beautiful. | 0:43:48 | 0:43:54
All right, gentlemen, the next carpenter to leave the competition is... | 0:43:55 | 0:44:01
It's you, Peter. | 0:44:08 | 0:44:10
-Well done for getting this far. -Thank you. | 0:44:11 | 0:44:14
Peter showed off his skills with skirting in the first round | 0:44:21 | 0:44:25
but in the second challenge he had problems with the roof | 0:44:25 | 0:44:28
and, although he did well in the grilling, the judges felt he lacked ambition | 0:44:28 | 0:44:32
and overall didn't have enough to keep him in the competition. | 0:44:32 | 0:44:36
Thanks. All right, thanks. | 0:44:36 | 0:44:39
'I've won competitions before based on my joinery,' | 0:44:39 | 0:44:42
so I just feel I've been kicked out of this because of my attitude and people skills. | 0:44:42 | 0:44:46
So, Tibby, Karl. You're through to the final. | 0:44:47 | 0:44:51
One of you will be crowned Young Carpenter Of The Year. | 0:44:51 | 0:44:55
-How are you feeling? -All right. | 0:45:00 | 0:45:02
'Absolutely fantastic. We're so pleased, over the moon.' | 0:45:02 | 0:45:06
Absolutely over the moon. Me nerves are shot to bits, though. | 0:45:06 | 0:45:10
It's been a good experience. To be in the top two, though, just... | 0:45:12 | 0:45:16
feels good. | 0:45:16 | 0:45:19
-Well, just stay calm and just do everything, take everything... -Just be focused. -Yeah. | 0:45:19 | 0:45:23
It's time for the final face-off, and the pressure's on. | 0:45:27 | 0:45:31
It's in front of an audience made up of family and friends. | 0:45:31 | 0:45:35
Welcome back our two finalists. APPLAUSE AND CHEERING | 0:45:35 | 0:45:39
So, there's two of you left but only one title up for grabs. | 0:45:42 | 0:45:47
Judges, what have you got planned for 'em? | 0:45:47 | 0:45:50
You've got just three hours to fit and finish a domestic kitchen. | 0:45:50 | 0:45:55
Your time starts now. | 0:46:00 | 0:46:03
With nothing more than a plan to follow, | 0:46:06 | 0:46:09
Karl and Tibby have to build a kitchen from scratch. | 0:46:09 | 0:46:12
Two of the country's top young carpenters, | 0:46:12 | 0:46:15
our boys have just three hours to complete the task. | 0:46:15 | 0:46:19
That means no tea breaks, lads. | 0:46:19 | 0:46:21
They will have to fit the cupboards, doors, drawers, handles, | 0:46:23 | 0:46:27
worktops, washing machines, a hob and an oven. | 0:46:27 | 0:46:31
Basically everything. Including the kitchen sink. | 0:46:31 | 0:46:36
The lads crack on with the kitchens, | 0:46:40 | 0:46:42
but the judges aren't happy with their plan of attack. | 0:46:42 | 0:46:46
Judges, what are we thinking? | 0:46:46 | 0:46:47
-Ooh, that's not a good face. -Not my best face. | 0:46:47 | 0:46:51
Karl, when we told him the challenge, the look on his face was, "I haven't got enough time." | 0:46:51 | 0:46:56
He's gone in... bull in a china shop. | 0:46:56 | 0:46:58
And Tibby's on a go-slow. | 0:47:00 | 0:47:03
I kind of see him measuring so much and I'm just thinking, is he going to get bogged down again? | 0:47:03 | 0:47:08
He might struggle, because there are things later on, cutting a hole in a worktop, | 0:47:08 | 0:47:12
he's going to be really precise with that and take a long time. | 0:47:12 | 0:47:17
But, regardless of the time pressure, | 0:47:17 | 0:47:19
Tibby refuses to do a rushed job. | 0:47:19 | 0:47:22
-He's very methodical, isn't he? -He is, yeah. | 0:47:22 | 0:47:25
When he does do his work, he's representing carpenters, so he doesn't want to do a bad job. | 0:47:25 | 0:47:29
Do you get him doing much stuff for you around the house? | 0:47:29 | 0:47:32
-I've got a list when he's finished! -Really? -He's got a long list. | 0:47:32 | 0:47:36
Karl is looking at home in his kitchen. | 0:47:38 | 0:47:41
-So, Christine, he's really passionate about his trade? -He is very, yeah. | 0:47:41 | 0:47:46
-Did he show any leanings towards it when he was younger? -He always wanted a real power workshop toy | 0:47:46 | 0:47:51
but I'd never let him because I thought it was too dangerous. And now look what he's doing! | 0:47:51 | 0:47:58
Despite their different working styles, | 0:47:58 | 0:48:01
Karl and Tibby are neck and neck. | 0:48:01 | 0:48:03
Their kitchens are starting to take shape. | 0:48:03 | 0:48:06
What they don't realise is that they have both made a fatal blunder. | 0:48:06 | 0:48:10
-Right, guys, what's going on? I see there's trouble brewing here. -Yeah. | 0:48:15 | 0:48:18
They've gone straight into it, put the units in, | 0:48:18 | 0:48:21
but there needs to be, between one run of units and the other, a little corner post. | 0:48:21 | 0:48:27
A corner post is the most vital part of a fitted kitchen. | 0:48:27 | 0:48:31
It keeps distance between two corner units. | 0:48:31 | 0:48:33
Without this, you will not be able to open drawers or cupboards, | 0:48:33 | 0:48:37
and the kitchen is quite frankly a waste of space. | 0:48:37 | 0:48:40
They've both forgotten to put it in, and they're going to find out | 0:48:40 | 0:48:44
when they see that bit of wood on the floor. | 0:48:44 | 0:48:48
Disaster. | 0:48:48 | 0:48:50
The carpenters are clueless about the huge mistake they've made. | 0:48:51 | 0:48:57
There is a chance that they won't pick it up until we try and open those drawers. | 0:48:57 | 0:49:01
Then I'd like to see their faces. | 0:49:01 | 0:49:03
Stop press. The judges think they can breathe a sigh of relief, | 0:49:03 | 0:49:08
as Tibby discovers the corner post. | 0:49:08 | 0:49:10
Tibby's just picked it up. | 0:49:10 | 0:49:12
But they cannot believe what they're seeing. | 0:49:12 | 0:49:15
He's used it as a guide, clamped it to his worktop, | 0:49:15 | 0:49:18
and he's now got a saw on the end of his worktop. | 0:49:18 | 0:49:23
He hasn't realised. That's a massively important part of his kitchen. | 0:49:23 | 0:49:27
-He's going to be gutted when he realises he's done that. -Devastated. | 0:49:27 | 0:49:31
With both carpenters completely missing the point | 0:49:31 | 0:49:34
of a corner post, the judges have no choice | 0:49:34 | 0:49:37
but to look for good workmanship in the rest of the kitchen. | 0:49:37 | 0:49:40
Gentlemen, you've got one hour left, one hour to go. | 0:49:40 | 0:49:45
Time is not on their side | 0:49:47 | 0:49:49
and the boys are really up against it to get the job finished. | 0:49:49 | 0:49:53
And Karl is feeling the pressure. | 0:49:53 | 0:49:57
You don't really get your builder coming round and fitting your kitchen in three hours, do you? | 0:49:57 | 0:50:02
-Nah, it just proves now that it can be done. -It hasn't been done yet. | 0:50:02 | 0:50:06
Right, OK. Crack on, mate. | 0:50:06 | 0:50:08
Feeling his shot at the title is under real threat, | 0:50:08 | 0:50:11
Karl plays a tactical move in an effort to psych out the competition. | 0:50:11 | 0:50:17
Karl's actually chose to get the oven and get that put in, which at this stage of the game... | 0:50:17 | 0:50:23
If he's trying to psychologically think that he's further ahead, | 0:50:23 | 0:50:26
it looks more complete but actually it's not. | 0:50:26 | 0:50:29
With Karl looking like he's ahead of the game for the first time, | 0:50:29 | 0:50:32
Tibby loses his cool. | 0:50:32 | 0:50:34
-Is there anything you're worried about, Tibby? -Obviously time is a problem. | 0:50:39 | 0:50:43
He has no time for small talk. | 0:50:43 | 0:50:45
I suppose it's quite hard, though, when you're used to being Mr Perfect. | 0:50:45 | 0:50:49
Well, yeah. Yeah. | 0:50:49 | 0:50:51
The only thing on Tibby's mind right now is getting the job done. | 0:50:51 | 0:50:56
Chaps, you've got half an hour left. Half an hour to go. | 0:50:56 | 0:50:59
With the clock ticking, | 0:51:01 | 0:51:02
the judges are worried the boys aren't going to finish. | 0:51:02 | 0:51:06
Is there anything you think that you've got to get in the next sort of 20 minutes, 25 minutes? | 0:51:06 | 0:51:11
I think, get the cooker in there. | 0:51:11 | 0:51:13
-What about sinks and... -Hobs. | 0:51:13 | 0:51:15
Struggling for time a bit, really. | 0:51:15 | 0:51:17
You're having to graft, aren't you, to get this done in three hours? | 0:51:17 | 0:51:21
Oh, yeah. Concentrating on the quality as well. | 0:51:21 | 0:51:24
Whilst Tibby is focusing on quality, Karl is all about the quantity. | 0:51:24 | 0:51:28
He's doing bits all over the place, he's putting an oven in | 0:51:28 | 0:51:32
and doing a worktop, looking at draws and that sort of thing, | 0:51:32 | 0:51:35
whereas Tibby is on the worktops, he's going to stay on the worktops till he's finished the worktops. | 0:51:35 | 0:51:41
With minutes left, | 0:51:43 | 0:51:44
the carpenters frantically try to finish their dream kitchens. | 0:51:44 | 0:51:48
One minute left now, guys. One minute left. | 0:51:50 | 0:51:53
At the last second, Karl finds a use for his corner post. | 0:51:54 | 0:51:58
Just not the right one. | 0:51:58 | 0:52:00
Five, four, three, | 0:52:00 | 0:52:03
two, one. | 0:52:03 | 0:52:05
That's it, gentlemen. Carpenters, tools down, please. Well done. | 0:52:05 | 0:52:11
Give them a big round of applause, guys. | 0:52:11 | 0:52:13
With the final challenge now complete, | 0:52:15 | 0:52:18
the judges want a closer look at their handiwork. | 0:52:18 | 0:52:20
Karl got the hob, oven and sink in, | 0:52:22 | 0:52:24
but didn't finish his cupboards and drawers, leaving the job half done. | 0:52:24 | 0:52:29
Tibby managed to fit the cupboards, drawers, doors and oven, | 0:52:29 | 0:52:33
but no hob or sink. | 0:52:33 | 0:52:35
The brief was to build a fully functioning kitchen | 0:52:35 | 0:52:38
and perfectionist Tibby is about to find out | 0:52:38 | 0:52:42
he missed a vital piece of the jigsaw. | 0:52:42 | 0:52:45
Tibby, one thing we noticed pretty early on | 0:52:45 | 0:52:48
is that you needed that corner post to push all these units up this way. | 0:52:48 | 0:52:52
Your drawers are going to hit your handles. | 0:52:52 | 0:52:57
You actually used it as a straight edge when you were cutting | 0:52:57 | 0:53:01
the worktop, you had it in your hand, you were that close to it. | 0:53:01 | 0:53:05
Just rushing, you make mistakes. | 0:53:05 | 0:53:07
Well, that's a costly mistake. | 0:53:07 | 0:53:09
-The bad news is that you didn't fit that corner post, Tibby. -Yeah. | 0:53:10 | 0:53:15
The good news is... that neither did Karl. | 0:53:15 | 0:53:18
Karl is gutted that he also failed to spot the post. | 0:53:18 | 0:53:22
As you flagged up, I did make the same mistake as Tibby with the corner post. | 0:53:22 | 0:53:27
-You found a use for it, though. -Yeah. | 0:53:27 | 0:53:30
No, it should have gone there, so I'm kicking myself about that. | 0:53:30 | 0:53:34
But it isn't a complete washout for Karl. | 0:53:34 | 0:53:37
One thing that Tibby didn't manage to do was sinks and hobs. | 0:53:37 | 0:53:42
One massive thing you've managed to do on your worktop is get a hob in. | 0:53:43 | 0:53:47
A lot of work, in that time. | 0:53:47 | 0:53:49
-Considering your face when we told you you had three hours, you've done quite well, mate. -Thank you. | 0:53:49 | 0:53:54
I'm a bit surprised you missed that corner piece. | 0:53:57 | 0:54:01
-I just didn't think of it, really. -You can practise at home. -Yeah. | 0:54:01 | 0:54:06
There's a few mistakes I made. | 0:54:06 | 0:54:08
But obviously, with the pressure and the time limit, | 0:54:08 | 0:54:11
I've done the best I can really. | 0:54:11 | 0:54:14
I really did give it my best shot there. | 0:54:14 | 0:54:17
I'm feeling quite pleased. Quite relieved that it's over! | 0:54:17 | 0:54:20
Well, we came into this knowing that they had a massive uphill task | 0:54:23 | 0:54:27
to get a kitchen finished in three hours. | 0:54:27 | 0:54:30
The mistakes that we saw out there, you know, | 0:54:30 | 0:54:33
under that amount of pressure, I kind of feel for them a little bit. I'm going to give them that. | 0:54:33 | 0:54:39
Both Karl and Tibby have performed really well. | 0:54:39 | 0:54:41
They've both got a great attitude, they go about their work | 0:54:41 | 0:54:45
in a way that would please me, but one has still shone through for me. | 0:54:45 | 0:54:49
One of these guys has that finesse | 0:54:49 | 0:54:52
-which I think takes him a step above the rest. -Yeah. | 0:54:52 | 0:54:55
-I think we've got a decision, yeah. -Good stuff. | 0:54:55 | 0:54:59
OK, it's time to crown our winner. Our judges have made their decision. | 0:55:03 | 0:55:08
Let's bring back our two finalists. | 0:55:08 | 0:55:11
You've both impressed our judges along the way | 0:55:22 | 0:55:25
but only one of you will be going home Young Carpenter Of The Year. | 0:55:25 | 0:55:30
