Helicopters don't have wings

on either side, like aeroplanes or birds.

Instead, they have these, called blades.

When the blades spin...

..the helicopter can fly.

Helicopters move in lots of different directions.

They can go straight up...

..or backwards...

..forwards...

..side to side.

They can even hover on the spot.

And when they're ready to land, they can move straight downwards.

But this helicopter isn't quite ready to land yet.

I turn on lots of switches.

The propeller spins round and round

when it begins to fly.

They go up in the sky.

It just flies anywhere it can go.

Helicopters go very high in the clouds.

Because it's going to rescue somebody.

It's a rescue one and there's a pilot inside.

His name is Tom.

They get the string out...

..and tie it on to the people.

I would be a wicked pilot.

Oh, the helicopter needs somewhere to land.

It needs a helipad.

A helipad is a special landing place for helicopters.

They're big and round, and in the middle, they have an "H".

That's a "H" for helicopter.

There we go.

It's big, so it's clear for the pilot to see it from the sky.
