-This is Dave. -Hi. -Dave owns a wooden ship called the Theseus. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:19
And that's Dave's wife. She doesn't like goodbyes. Dave and his crew... | 0:00:19 | 0:00:25
Ooh-arr! | 0:00:25 | 0:00:26
Yup, thank you. Dave and his crew are setting off on a long voyage. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:31
It's a tough voyage, with many storms and mishaps. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
And it gets really quite hard to keep the ship sailing | 0:00:34 | 0:00:37
and to stop bits of it falling into the water. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
Every time the ship is damaged, | 0:00:43 | 0:00:44
Dave takes the Theseus to George's shipyard. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
And George replaces the broken wooden bits | 0:00:47 | 0:00:50
with shiny, new metal ones. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:51
Bye! | 0:00:53 | 0:00:54 | |
But there are many dangers, like Ollie the octopus, | 0:00:57 | 0:01:00
who does like a bit of fish and chips. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
And so, every few months of his journey, Dave heads back | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
to see George and has any broken wooden bits replaced with metal. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:13
-Bye bye! -Bye! | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
HE HUMS | 0:01:16 | 0:01:17
And each time the ship gets damaged, more metal parts are added. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:22
And so on and so on until eventually, | 0:01:22 | 0:01:27
every part of the Theseus has been replaced. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
The ship is now entirely metal, inside and out. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:33
When Dave gets home, his wife, | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
who's been really missing Dave a great deal, is surprised. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:42
She wants to know why he's got a new ship. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:45
"I haven't got a new ship," says Dave. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
Dave's wife insists that it can't be the same ship. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
Dave insists that it is. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
This goes back and forth for what seems like an eternity. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:57
But Dave's wife won't budge. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
Your ship was wooden, and this ship is metal! | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
-Nothing of the old ship remains. -What do you think? | 0:02:03 | 0:02:07
Dave and his wife haven't stopped arguing about whether | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
it's the same ship when suddenly, over the horizon, | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
a familiar shape appears. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
It's the Theseus, only made of wood! How did this happen? | 0:02:29 | 0:02:34
It turns out George always wanted his own ship. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:40
So, rather cleverly, he kept all the wooden bits | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
that fell off the original Theseus and decided to rebuild it. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:47
It needed a lot of hard work and an awful lot of nails. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:51
But it looks very good, now he's finished. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
The minute she sees the ship, Dave's wife thinks it's Dave's ship, | 0:02:54 | 0:02:58
the Theseus. So what does this mean? | 0:02:58 | 0:03:02
They're both called the Theseus, and they both look the same. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:06
Well, except that one's made of wood and one's made of metal. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:09
It's all getting a bit confusing. Oh, dear! | 0:03:11 | 0:03:14
Now, this is all very well with ancient ships and whatnot, | 0:03:28 | 0:03:31
but what happens if we think about something a little closer to | 0:03:31 | 0:03:34
home, like... I don't know, you? | 0:03:34 | 0:03:37
You see, like Dave's ship, | 0:03:37 | 0:03:39
our bodies change and grow throughout our lives. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:42
We're born, we grow up into toddlers, then children... | 0:03:42 | 0:03:46
Hi! | 0:03:46 | 0:03:48 | |
..And we keep growing into teenagers, then adults. | 0:03:48 | 0:03:52
And we continue changing our whole lives. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:54
Our hair grows and falls out, and more grows without us even noticing. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:58
We get a whole new set of teeth. Everything changes. | 0:03:58 | 0:04:03
So if every part of us gets replaced, too, like Dave's ship, | 0:04:03 | 0:04:07
then that raises a big question. | 0:04:07 | 0:04:09
Along a great river, there are two villages. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:29
The first one, way up river, is a farming village full of, well, | 0:04:30 | 0:04:34
farmers. Now, this village isn't a very happy place. | 0:04:34 | 0:04:39
There's never enough water to feed the crops, | 0:04:39 | 0:04:41
and the people are very hungry. | 0:04:41 | 0:04:43
Rotten crops, rumbling tums, bad tempers. You get the idea. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:51
However, some way down river, there's a fishing village full of, | 0:04:51 | 0:04:54
well, fisher-people. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:57
Now, they depend on the river for all their food, | 0:04:57 | 0:05:00
and they have lots of lovely fish to eat. But one day... | 0:05:00 | 0:05:05
Oh, no! | 0:05:05 | 0:05:07
They discover that their lovely fish-filled river | 0:05:07 | 0:05:09
has dried up completely. | 0:05:09 | 0:05:11
No water, nothing. No fish at all, not even a goldfish! | 0:05:11 | 0:05:16
With no fish to eat, people start to go hungry. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:22
And so, a fearless fisher-girl from the village sets off | 0:05:23 | 0:05:27
to find out why the river has dried up. | 0:05:27 | 0:05:30
Packing the last of the fish paste sandwiches, | 0:05:30 | 0:05:33
she follows the dry river all the way to the farmers' village. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:36
There, she meets a farmer boy. "Welcome to our village," he says. | 0:05:39 | 0:05:44
"It's a great place. | 0:05:44 | 0:05:45
"We have plenty to eat and our crops have lots of water, | 0:05:45 | 0:05:49
"all thanks to our dam." | 0:05:49 | 0:05:50
The fisher-girl is horrified. "You've stolen our water," she says. | 0:05:53 | 0:05:59
What do you think? | 0:06:00 | 0:06:01
The fisher-girl explains to the farmer boy how the dam | 0:06:16 | 0:06:19
has stopped the river flowing down to their village. | 0:06:19 | 0:06:22
She tells him all about her village going hungry | 0:06:22 | 0:06:26
because they have no more fish. The farmer boy feels bad. | 0:06:26 | 0:06:31
He hadn't thought about how this would affect his neighbours. | 0:06:31 | 0:06:35
And then he has an idea. | 0:06:35 | 0:06:37
Why don't the fisher-people just come and live with us? | 0:06:37 | 0:06:40
The fisher-girl isn't sure this will solve the problem. | 0:06:40 | 0:06:44
After all, | 0:06:44 | 0:06:45
the fisher-people have lived in their village for hundreds of years. | 0:06:45 | 0:06:49
Everything they do is based around fish and fishing. | 0:06:49 | 0:06:53
If the fisher-people come and live with the farmers, | 0:06:53 | 0:06:55
they'll have to change their entire way of life. Not only that - | 0:06:55 | 0:06:59
even if the fisher-people come to the farming village, | 0:06:59 | 0:07:03
will the farmers welcome them? | 0:07:03 | 0:07:05
It's an awful lot of new mouths to feed, for a start. | 0:07:05 | 0:07:07
Well, there are a lot of things to consider here. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:12
This is Ben. He's just walking along when... | 0:07:30 | 0:07:34
Oh, hang on! | 0:07:34 | 0:07:35
He's found something. It's a ring. It's not just any ring, though. | 0:07:35 | 0:07:42
It's a magic ring, a real, | 0:07:42 | 0:07:44
proper magic ring that makes you disappear when you put it on. | 0:07:44 | 0:07:49
So now... Ben? Err... is he still there? | 0:07:49 | 0:07:53
Ah! | 0:07:53 | 0:07:54 | |
So now, Ben starts imagining the awesome things | 0:07:54 | 0:07:57
he can do with his new power. | 0:07:57 | 0:07:59
He could use the ring to help people, | 0:07:59 | 0:08:01
like stopping nasty burglars before they get away. | 0:08:01 | 0:08:04
-So kind of like a real superhero. -Hmm. -Maybe he needs a name. | 0:08:04 | 0:08:09
But then, he could also use it to play tricks on people, | 0:08:12 | 0:08:15
which might not be helpful, but it could be quite funny. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:19
Oooooo! | 0:08:19 | 0:08:21
HE CHUCKLES | 0:08:21 | 0:08:22
Soon, Ben gets bored just thinking about what he's going to do | 0:08:37 | 0:08:41
with the ring and decides to have a little bit of fun with it. | 0:08:41 | 0:08:44
HE CHUCKLES | 0:08:44 | 0:08:45
There's Sophie, having a lovely dolls' tea party. | 0:08:45 | 0:08:49
And then along comes Ben to wreak havoc with it! | 0:08:49 | 0:08:54
Woooooo! | 0:08:54 | 0:08:55
SHE SCREAMS | 0:08:55 | 0:08:56
Later on, Ben's just playing ball with Karim when... | 0:08:59 | 0:09:02
Uh-oh! | 0:09:06 | 0:09:07
Enter the magic ring again, which helps him disappear | 0:09:07 | 0:09:09
and cleverly avoid getting caught. | 0:09:09 | 0:09:12
Phew! | 0:09:13 | 0:09:14 | |
Grrr! | 0:09:15 | 0:09:16 | |
So Ben's become quite attached to being invisible, | 0:09:25 | 0:09:28
and he finds himself thinking | 0:09:28 | 0:09:30
he'd like one of those lovely, juicy apples. | 0:09:30 | 0:09:33
Mmmm! | 0:09:34 | 0:09:35 | |
He could just steal one. | 0:09:35 | 0:09:36
And if he's invisible, he can't get caught, can he? | 0:09:36 | 0:09:40
But Sophie has seen what he's up to, and ever so quietly, | 0:09:40 | 0:09:44
she creeps up on him and catches him in the act. | 0:09:44 | 0:09:47
Uh-oh! | 0:09:48 | 0:09:49
Sophie says, "Why don't you use your power to do good things?" | 0:09:49 | 0:09:53
She tells him that doing good things makes her feel happy, | 0:09:53 | 0:09:56
and that we should all do good things because, | 0:09:56 | 0:09:59
well, because it's good. | 0:09:59 | 0:10:00
What do you think? | 0:10:02 | 0:10:03
Sophie, Ben and Karim are going on a quest. Adventure! Excitement! Peril! | 0:10:21 | 0:10:27
You know, all the usual questy stuff. | 0:10:27 | 0:10:30
Their plan is to find the mysterious golden bird which lives | 0:10:30 | 0:10:34
deep in the forest. | 0:10:34 | 0:10:35
BIRD SQUEALS | 0:10:35 | 0:10:38
Unfortunately, they haven't actually set off yet because they've spent | 0:10:39 | 0:10:43
the past two hours arguing about who's going to carry what. | 0:10:43 | 0:10:47
Karim has hurt his arm, | 0:10:47 | 0:10:49
so he doesn't think he should carry too much. | 0:10:49 | 0:10:52
In fact, he's going to struggle to carry anything. | 0:10:52 | 0:10:55
Sophie is the smallest, so she thinks she should carry less | 0:10:59 | 0:11:02
than the others, especially Ben, who's much bigger. | 0:11:02 | 0:11:05
-Yoo hoo! Wa ha! -Yippee! Yippee! | 0:11:05 | 0:11:08
But Ben is seriously unhappy about carrying more stuff | 0:11:09 | 0:11:13
because he's only brought a tiny amount. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:16
He thinks he can't help being bigger. | 0:11:16 | 0:11:20
Why should he have to carry other people's stuff? | 0:11:20 | 0:11:23
Hmph! | 0:11:23 | 0:11:24 | |
So how are they going to sort it out and actually find the golden bird, | 0:11:24 | 0:11:28
now that they're not even talking to each other? | 0:11:28 | 0:11:31
Hours later, and they've still not decided who's carrying what. | 0:11:44 | 0:11:49
Well, now, it's lunchtime, | 0:11:49 | 0:11:51
and Sophie's tummy is making some rather strange noises. | 0:11:51 | 0:11:53
HER TUMMY RUMBLES | 0:11:53 | 0:11:55
She says they should eat before they carry on, | 0:11:55 | 0:11:58
-and suggests they all share out their lunches. -Yay! -Yeah! -Yeah! | 0:11:58 | 0:12:02
Karim has brought a pretty decent spread, | 0:12:02 | 0:12:04
lots of tasty stuff to keep them going. | 0:12:04 | 0:12:06
But Ben has only brought what he can afford, which isn't as much. | 0:12:07 | 0:12:11
And Sophie's brought, well, loads. | 0:12:13 | 0:12:15
Yay! Woo hoo! | 0:12:15 | 0:12:17
Karim's not sure about sharing when he's brought more than Ben. | 0:12:17 | 0:12:20
But then he has an idea. | 0:12:20 | 0:12:23
Maybe Ben could earn some extra food | 0:12:23 | 0:12:25
if he agrees to carry more on the journey. | 0:12:25 | 0:12:28
But Ben doesn't think it's fair to make him do all the work, | 0:12:28 | 0:12:31
just because he hasn't got as much food. | 0:12:31 | 0:12:34
This is going to be tricky and... Oh, dear! | 0:12:34 | 0:12:38
It looks like they've spent so long arguing, | 0:12:38 | 0:12:40
the bird has flown off on a quest of its own. | 0:12:40 | 0:12:43
Oh, look! He's left them a little present! | 0:12:43 | 0:12:46
On the banks of a river sits a scorpion. | 0:13:05 | 0:13:08
This scorpion has got lost, | 0:13:08 | 0:13:10
and she's separated from her family by a huge river. | 0:13:10 | 0:13:13
Now, you may not know this, but scorpions can't swim. | 0:13:15 | 0:13:18
So she can't cross it. She's stuck. | 0:13:20 | 0:13:23
-Ribbit! -Ooh! | 0:13:23 | 0:13:24
At that moment, a frog passes by. | 0:13:24 | 0:13:27
Ribbit ribbit! | 0:13:27 | 0:13:28
Now, of course, frogs can swim, so she asks the frog for help. | 0:13:28 | 0:13:32
"Ha ha ha," says the frog. "I don't think so! | 0:13:34 | 0:13:37
"Scorpions and frogs are deadly enemies. Scorpions sting frogs. | 0:13:37 | 0:13:41
"When we're halfway across, you'll sting me." | 0:13:41 | 0:13:45
"Why would I do that?" says the scorpion. "It makes no sense. | 0:13:45 | 0:13:49
"If I sting you, I won't get across the river to my family." | 0:13:49 | 0:13:52
Mmmm... | 0:13:53 | 0:13:55
But the scorpion can see that the frog's still not sure. | 0:13:55 | 0:13:58
And so she says, "I promise I won't sting you." What do you think? | 0:13:58 | 0:14:02
Eventually, after a lot of pleading from the scorpion, | 0:14:12 | 0:14:15
the frog agrees to carry her across the river. | 0:14:15 | 0:14:19
Now, what looks like a short distance to you | 0:14:19 | 0:14:22
is quite a long journey for a frog, especially | 0:14:22 | 0:14:25
when you've got someone your own size on your back | 0:14:25 | 0:14:27
and it's a scorpion. | 0:14:27 | 0:14:29
Woo hoo! | 0:14:29 | 0:14:30
-Halfway across the river, the frog feels sharp pain on his head. -Ow! | 0:14:32 | 0:14:38
The scorpion has stung him! | 0:14:38 | 0:14:39
"Why did you do that?" screams the frog. "Now we'll both drown!" | 0:14:41 | 0:14:46
"I can't help it," says the scorpion. "Scorpions sting frogs. | 0:14:46 | 0:14:51
"It's in my nature." | 0:14:51 | 0:14:54
And with that, both the scorpion and the frog sink down into the river. | 0:14:54 | 0:14:59
That's all very well for frogs and scorpions, | 0:15:14 | 0:15:17
but what does this have to do with humans? | 0:15:17 | 0:15:20
Well, let's take Karim as an example. | 0:15:20 | 0:15:24
Karim's always been a bit, well, careless with other people's things. | 0:15:24 | 0:15:29
Ah! Yeah! | 0:15:31 | 0:15:34
Karim's best friend, Sophie, | 0:15:34 | 0:15:36
has a telescope that he really wants to borrow. | 0:15:36 | 0:15:39
The thing is, Sophie's not sure. She knows Karim is careless. | 0:15:40 | 0:15:46
But he promises to be careful with it. | 0:15:46 | 0:15:49
So eventually, she decides to lend him the telescope. | 0:15:49 | 0:15:53
Karim heads off, carrying the telescope extra carefully. | 0:15:53 | 0:15:59
Phew! | 0:15:59 | 0:16:00 | |
He spends the evening looking at the stars, | 0:16:00 | 0:16:02
making sure he's being extra careful. | 0:16:02 | 0:16:05
And the next day, on his way to return it to Sophie, he sees a group | 0:16:08 | 0:16:12
of little baby scorpions looking cute on the bank of the river. | 0:16:12 | 0:16:16
Uh-oh! Looks like Karim might not have been extra careful this time. | 0:16:20 | 0:16:26
Hi! | 0:16:26 | 0:16:27 | |
And that means he has broken his promise to Sophie. | 0:16:28 | 0:16:32
She's probably going to be rather upset. | 0:16:32 | 0:16:34
