Sir Colin Davis with Love: In Performance

Sir Colin Davis was one of the greatest conductors,

celebrated around the world.

In this country, he led three major musical institutions,

the BBC Symphony Orchestra, The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden

and the London Symphony Orchestra,

with whom he collaborated for more than half a century.

Colin Davis had a fiery temperament in his youth,

but fellow conductors, orchestral players

and amateur musicians have all spoken of his eternal

generosity and kindness, and his towering musicianship.

He made over 140 appearances here at the BBC Proms,

the first in 1960, the last in 2011, when he conducted

an unforgettable performance of Beethoven's Missa Solemnis.

This work, he said, made him, a non-believer,

reconsider faith each time he conducted it.

In the Agnus Dei, he talked about how Beethoven's music reaches

an intensity of protest that is almost unbearable.

In memory of Sir Colin Davis, he conducts the Kyrie

and Agnus Dei from Beethoven's Missa Solemnis.
