Evil Woman was the most amazing song I wrote

because of the way it came about.

I just thought...

It was on the album Face The Music, and I thought,

"There's not a really good single on this yet, and I'm going to make one."

So I sent everybody out to have a game of football or something,

and I made it up in, like, about six minutes,

just these three chords. I went straight to the piano.

Those three chords that you hear, they came to me immediately,

and the whole thing was ready.

When they got back from the game, I said, "Right, let's record this one,"

and everybody learnt it, and it was so quick.

And that's usually the way.

The quicker it comes, usually the more memorable it is.

'Strange Magic, I remember writing.'

I was under these stairs somewhere with a piano

and I can still remember the stairs, can't remember the piano!

But...it just came very, very simply again,

it was just one of those things that you just try out a few chords,

sing a few little notes to it and you go, "Wow, that's good.

"Quick, where's me tape recorder?" It's one of them.

It was used in a film, underneath shots of Trevor Francis,

my mate, the footballer,

scoring all these fantastic goals and dribbling round four or

five players and then whanging it in from about 30 yards, stuff like that.

That's why I was thrilled, cos it was showing his goals with my tune.

My dad was a real classical buff.

He knew every composer, every bit of music.

"That's so-and-so," you know, "movement number 2," and all that.

Or 3, or 4.

And I just used to wonder, "How the hell does he know all that stuff?"

Cos he wasn't exactly the sort of guy you would expect to,

because he worked on the roads department of Birmingham Council.

So you don't expect a guy who moves slabs around onto pavements and that

to know all that sort of stuff. He was really clever, my dad.

And he didn't play an instrument, but he could do harmonies,

you know? He could sing harmonies to stuff on the radio,

and he could play the tunes on one finger, with one finger,

on the piano, with stuff on the radio - join in, you know?

So I think that's where I got my little bit of stuff from.

From him.

Luckily enough, he came home with a guitar one day,

it had cost him £2, and it was this lovely big fat guitar

that was so hard to play, but it was a good lesson,

because once you can play that, you can play anything.

I'd just like to say, as well, that Mike Stevens there

is one of the hardest-working people I've ever known. And he's fantastic,

so he deserves a lot of credit.

And so does the wonderful band that I've got behind me,

and the BBC Concert Orchestra! What about that?

What I used to hear on the radio, you know, when you listen and

you're driving in the van on the motorway or wherever you're going...

erm, it was always like, in that era, like '72...

Handle With Care was the first song we attempted

on the Wilburys' sessions.

And the great thing was we did it in Bob Dylan's garage, of all places,

where you'd, you know, like you would if you could.

But we did it and... We did the...

We laid down the track, we sort of...

George had about...

like, half a verse to it already and then we all sat round

and wrote and finished the song off. And...

We laid it down, the written track, and then we went for dinner

and had dinner at Bob's, in Bob's house.

And then we wrote the words over dinner.

Everybody would shout out the line, and then, "What would go there?"

"Ooh, I bet this, that, what rhymes with that?"

So it was very interesting with Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty,

George Harrison and me shouting out bits of, you know, rhymes and stuff.

And it turned into a really good song and I love that song

and the words are really good.

They stand up really well as a real piece.

It was a song that I drove everybody nuts with

because I played all the instruments myself on that one.

I got a loop of drums from another song, just base drum,

snare and high hat. Just bump, splat, bump, splat.

I put like half a dozen pianos on it all going...

Just doing the same thing and everybody's going, "What the...?"

And it sounded really silly

but I could hear all the other stuff going on, I knew what was going

to happen but nobody else did so then I put the big guitars on, you know...

When I recorded Telephone Line, I actually phoned America just

to hear what it was.

And we didn't want to get nicked for stealing their ringtone,

like, you never know!

So we copied the sound of that ringtone on the Moog, which is

just a tone harmony -

it's just like an A and a B together.

And that's how we got that sound.

Mr Blue Sky, to me, I think of it as one of the first songs

I ever wrote with really posh chords and a very simple melody.

And I think it's the simplicity of it, of the song, of the tune,

and the words are quite simple.

It's kind of like a nursery rhyme kind of thing,

and that's how I meant it to be.

And erm...

..with, like, sophisticated accompaniment.

And I just thought it was really interesting cos it

was like a juxtaposition or whatever.

And I think it worked, because kids like it still,

and grown-ups like it too as well.

And there's two football teams use it to come out on the pitch to -
