Semi-Final One Eurovision Song Contest

I'm so excited. This is the first semifinal of Eurovision 2013. Here,

making her Eurovision debut, is Ana Matronic. We are less than one

minute away from all the action kicking off. This year the theme is

We Are One. Intriguing. A busy show tonight. Here are some highlights.

Coming up: Loreen will be here. We get into the groove of Eurovision.

The lady hoping to turn things around for the UK, Bonnie Tyler,

will be popping in. As well as all that, we have an eight-foot giant on

stage and rapping astronauts, where else but Eurovision? The show is

countries will fight for ten places in the final on Saturday. Here is

where you need to pay attention. Viewers in the UK can vote tonight,

but you can only vote by calling. You can't vote by text. Lines won't

open until after all 16 acts have performed. Please don't call before

then. Your vote won't count and you may still be charged. You can go to

they are saying in Malmo. Denmark is just over the bridge, a few miles

away from Copenhagen. So a lot of Danes have come over tonight. They

since the songs were announced. Apparently, her

so they can't hear. We rehearsed it and we did it together. It was so

They are up against it tonight. have had a tough time of it. What

would it mean for some of the countries to qualify tonight?

Netherlands are an old school Eurovision country. It would mean a

lot to them to qualify. For Montenegro, they have never

qualified, it would be a big deal for them. Julia, who are you liking?

I have to go for Anouk as well. She was doing what she loves. That is

what won Loreen the competition last year. She was herself. So is Anouk.

Hopefully, that will ring true. I love it. Were there any

disappointments for anyone tonight? We wouldn't say if there was, would

we? I would like you to? I love Belarus. It's a bit trashy. It was a

bit messy on stage. Also, there is a lot of political questions about

Belarus's participation in Eurovision. It is meant to be a song

contest. There are issues with human rights. It is a tricky area. I have

an issue with product placement. The butterfly in the Ukraine. That is

the most blatant use of product placement I have ever seen! That is

not going to get you votes. Everyone is talking about the Ukraine

staging. Did you see it with the giant? I haven't seen it.It is

great. You have missed something good there, Loreen. You can tell us

about it, Dr Eurovision. It is a strange way to carry a singer on. I

thought it was hilarious when I first saw it. They are having - he's

not got great health and they are having a laugh at his expense. He is

doing it willingly. He is a guy who has made a living being the tallest

man in America. There is something uncomfortable about laughing at

people. He puts her on that stump so you can't see the difference in how

tall he is compared to her? Someone had to put her there. I interviewed

him and he was the most delightful guy and he told me about his

upbringing in America and he used to work in McDonald's as a teenager.

She had to get up on that thing in that dress. Will he be the go-to

giant now? It was a very good song. He has side 24 feet. That is quite

big. Now, everyone's favourite, the bookies' favourite is Denmark. What

are we thinking? I suppose south Sweden is like north Denmark. So

they are all sort of sticking together. Obviously, barefoot, it

final. They know how to stage a song. They have been drawn together.

This year, the running order has been fixed. So it is interesting

they have done that. The Netherlands, which is so classy,

they came straight after it. They will qualify. Everyone's favourite

costume of the night? Oh, God, that has to be - I like Denmark.

Ukraine's dress was fabulous. liked yours in the opening. The

tribute to our Northern Lights. This feels like a perfect opportunity for

you to get to know our country a bit more. Who could be more suited for

this than the Europe ian broadcasting union's spokesperson,

Lynda Woodruff? My name is Lynda Woodruff. I'm the spokesperson for

the European Broadcasting Union. It was the song Euphoria with the

amazing Loreen. That brought the contest back to Sweden. A country

that's given the world so many wonderful things. For example,

been given a bedtime snack, amazing reindeer chips. I will save them for

later. Tomorrow, they have arranged for me to experience the calm nature

of Norland on a relaxing dog sleigh ride. Oh my God! Why can't Cyprus

win the Eurovision? the final. On Thursday, another ten

lucky winners will join them. In addition to that, six contestants

are already qualified. I'm talking about France, Spain, Germany, Italy

and the United Kingdom, plus, of course, last year's winner, Sweden.

Here we are taking a tour through the big five. Sweden. First up we

qualified three times in nine attempts. They have only been

successful 33% of the time. Congratulations Estonia. Our fifth

finalist of this evening is... are still waiting on Russia,

Ukraine, Netherlands, Montenegro. Belarus. Belarus made it in! They

have only qualified twice in nine attempts. There she is, bouncing

up-and-down in a fringy! Look at her. She is excited! Our sixth

finalist... If Russia and the Ukraine qualify, we have six...

Denmark. Denmark got in! Not much of a shock either. That was a fans'

favourite here. We have got four left, ladies and gentlemen. Who is

it going to be? The seventh finalist is Russia. Russia made it in. All

right! They have a 100% success rate. They have always qualified.

there are nine performers left, but only three tickets remain. That's

right. Only three. Come on! Montenegro! The eighth finalist is

made it in. That is great news for the Netherlands. They have been

trying for the last few years. I want to give my condolences to

Montenegro and tell them, "You can come out to Brooklyn and hang with

me and we can have some coffee and listen to some music!"
