This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about.

0:00:460:00:51

His mother, Mary, was pledged to be married to Joseph.

0:00:530:00:57

But before they came together,

0:00:570:00:59

she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.

0:00:590:01:04

Because Joseph, her husband, was faithful to the law,

0:01:040:01:08

and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace,

0:01:080:01:13

he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

0:01:130:01:16

But after he had considered this,

0:01:190:01:21

an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,

0:01:210:01:26

"Joseph, son of David,

0:01:260:01:29

"do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife.

0:01:290:01:33

"Because what is conceived inside her is from the Holy Spirit.

0:01:330:01:37

"She will give birth to a son,

0:01:370:01:40

"and you are to give him the name Jesus,

0:01:400:01:44

"because he will save his people from their sins."

0:01:440:01:47

All this took place to fulfil what the Lord had said

0:01:490:01:52

through the prophet.

0:01:520:01:54

"The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son,

0:01:540:01:59

"and they will call him Emmanuel, which means 'God with us'."

0:01:590:02:05

When Joseph woke up,

0:02:070:02:09

he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him,

0:02:090:02:12

and took Mary home as his wife.

0:02:120:02:15

But he did not consummate their marriage

0:02:150:02:18

until she had given birth to a son.

0:02:180:02:21

And he gave him the name Jesus.
