and some of you may know that I like to write a little song or two.

which might strike a chord with someone here tonight,

as it tells a little story

about my life when I moved to London when I was 18

and I slowly made my way back to Ireland.

And, as I say, this next song... Because there's so many people

moving away at the moment, so many young people,

-How are things? Are you well?

Well, you do get an awful lot of airplay in Donegal, you know.

I am very lucky, yeah. Getting great support from all the radio stations.

Myself and my brother, we gigged. We were into Irish country music.

My dad would have sang country

and our family would have been into Irish country music in a big way.

-Right.

-My great-granny won an All-Ireland Fleadh in 1950.

Do you come into the North of Ireland regularly for your gigs?

Yeah, we would indeed. We are all over.

But when you go to a town or a small village,

you know, people get to meet their "stars",

whereas with American stars it's great that people are

coming out to all the young Irish singers.

-Absolutely, yeah.

-It's brilliant.

Absolutely. There's a good few of us came up for your show tonight.

Do you know, it's just fantastic just to be standing back there

to see somebody as young as Derek

keeping the good old music alive. Just unbelievable.

Derek, you know, you're having a wonderful career, but you had

a whole other career as a pop singer.

What was the transition or the move like to country music for you?

Well, I suppose, you know, I started gigging

when I was about 12, and I was into Irish music and country music.

And then I got into a pop band and all that changed.

But luckily enough I wrote a little song called God's Plan

and that just, you know, made me come back to country and I'm loving it.

Absolutely loving it.

And, while I probably know the answer to this cos I can see

lots of younger faces here tonight,

but did any of the fans from the boyband era

come with you back to the country music?

Em, some did, you know. But some moved on to One Direction!

But, I tell you one thing, you can't beat the country music fans

and they're so loyal and all age groups from all different communities

and they travel up and down the country to see me,

so I'm very, very grateful.

And you know, Derek, they will be with you for years to come.

I am testament to that.

The country music fans who started following me are still with me.

And those who are following you

will be with you for as long as you want them to be.

I hope so!

Well, Derek very kindly, after a discussion with him

when we were on a cruise not long ago,

I said how much I enjoyed his songs.

And he said, "Well, if you ever want to record some of my songs,

"I'd be delighted."

And I certainly took him up on his...

But I took him up on what he said

and I've recorded two of his songs just recently,
