On tonight's show, we have Our Krypton Son and SOAK

0:00:330:00:35

coming at us from Dingle.

0:00:350:00:37

And we have Marina And The Diamonds coming from the beautiful Glassworks

0:00:370:00:40

-right here in Derry and SOAK.

-SOAK will also be appearing in London.

0:00:400:00:44

She gets around.

0:00:440:00:45

To kick us off tonight, we're going to start

0:00:450:00:47

with the magnificent Damien Dempsey.

0:00:470:00:50

# My buddy Stevie, I loved him well

0:00:540:01:00

# We had some laughs, he was sound as a bell

0:01:000:01:06

# Our little lives, they ran parallel

0:01:060:01:12

# He played with fire and got burnt as hell

0:01:120:01:19

# And I'm remembering little things we done

0:01:190:01:25

# We'd bummed a trail out to the beach in the sun

0:01:250:01:32

# We'd steal some ice pops and laugh and run

0:01:320:01:38

# And through the sand dunes, with finger guns

0:01:380:01:45

# But one day, Stevie, he got bitten by a bug

0:01:450:01:52

# He was fascinated by the life of the thug

0:01:520:01:58

# He felt a weakling and he craved some power,

0:01:580:02:04

# But the thug's existence can soon turn sour

0:02:040:02:12

# I'm missing you today

0:02:150:02:16

# I'm missing you today

0:02:230:02:27

# What I would give to see

0:02:270:02:32

# You smiling back at me

0:02:320:02:36

# And what I wouldn't do

0:02:360:02:39

# For one last laugh with you

0:02:400:02:43

# My buddy Chris, he was quiet, but tough

0:02:450:02:50

# And to his face, you wouldn't call him a puff

0:02:500:02:57

# We done the boxing and had many the scrap

0:02:570:03:02

# To this young warrior, I tip my cap

0:03:030:03:10

# In Celtic times, it wasn't seen as wrong

0:03:100:03:16

# Till the Roman Empire, when the shame came along

0:03:170:03:23

# They called this love evil and they done much harm

0:03:230:03:29

# But if you're hurting no-one, you'll be in God's arms

0:03:290:03:35

# Well, Chris and Stevie, I miss you both

0:03:370:03:41

# Two more young people cut down from a rope

0:03:430:03:48

# It breaks my heart that you went so far

0:03:490:03:54

# To all young people, be proud of who you are... #

0:03:560:04:01

APPLAUSE

0:04:030:04:06

# I'm missing you today

0:04:400:04:43

# I'm missing you today

0:04:480:04:59

# Today

0:05:020:05:09

# I'm missing you today

0:05:130:05:16

# I'm missing you today

0:05:200:05:26

# I'm missing you today

0:05:290:05:37

# I'm missing you today

0:05:370:05:42

# What I would give to see

0:05:420:05:44

# You smiling back at me

0:05:450:05:49

# What I wouldn't do

0:05:490:05:52

# For one last laugh with you

0:05:530:05:56

# Talk to me

0:06:030:06:06

# And tell me how you feel

0:06:060:06:13

# Lean on me

0:06:150:06:17

# I'm here, my love is real, oh

0:06:180:06:25

# Talk to me

0:06:260:06:30

# And tell me

0:06:300:06:33

# How you feel, oh

0:06:330:06:38

# Lean on me

0:06:380:06:42

# I'm here, my love is real. #

0:06:420:06:50

APPLAUSE

0:06:540:06:57

There's one artist, and only one artist,

0:07:060:07:09

who appears in Dingle, Derry-Londonderry and London,

0:07:090:07:12

here's SOAK.

0:07:120:07:14

# The stars and moon remind me of you

0:07:200:07:24

# I don't know what to say

0:07:240:07:26

# It might make you worse I don't understand

0:07:260:07:31

# What her problem is, I think she's just a fish

0:07:310:07:34

# I know you get it, but you don't deserve this

0:07:360:07:41

# And I won't put up with the ignorance

0:07:410:07:45

# And they tell you, they love you

0:07:450:07:49

# But they don't mean it

0:07:490:07:51

# I don't think they know what they mean

0:07:510:07:55

# I don't think they know what love is

0:07:550:08:00

# Throw it around like it's worthless

0:08:000:08:03

# Don't think they know what love is... #

0:08:050:08:09

PENGUINS SQUAWK

0:08:120:08:14

# I don't get this town, neither do you

0:08:250:08:30

# We should run away, just me and you

0:08:300:08:34

# Cos I don't get the people here

0:08:340:08:37

# They're curious

0:08:370:08:40

# They don't really care, sea creatures interfere

0:08:400:08:45

# Wish they would disappear

0:08:450:08:49

# They don't know what love is

0:08:540:08:58

# Throw it around like it's worthless

0:08:580:09:02

# They don't know what love is

0:09:020:09:07

# I prayed for you and you know I don't like Jesus

0:09:110:09:17

# Want you to get better

0:09:200:09:23

# Please, please, get better

0:09:230:09:27

# For you, for me. #

0:09:270:09:35

You're doing the rock and roll thing now,

0:09:430:09:45

you're clocking up the air miles, you'll be performing in Derry

0:09:450:09:49

and Dublin AND London and you're the only artist that's going

0:09:490:09:52

to perform at all three Other Voices, so how does that feel?

0:09:520:09:55

It's weird. It's really cool, but it's really weird.

0:09:550:10:00

I think the challenge is kind of like...

0:10:000:10:02

doing the same songs,

0:10:020:10:04

but making them so different each time.

0:10:040:10:07

And it's amazing, isn't it, how different...

0:10:070:10:09

When you have one song that works in one place

0:10:090:10:12

it can be a completely different experience in another.

0:10:120:10:14

-I always think...

-Sometimes it depends on the crowd

0:10:140:10:17

-and the atmosphere and what the sound man's like...

-Yeah.

0:10:170:10:20

It's different everywhere.

0:10:200:10:22

I was talking to Gary Lightbody and I was, like,

0:10:220:10:25

"How do you not get bored singing Chasing Cars and he was, like,

0:10:250:10:28

"Because the audience makes it different every single time."

0:10:280:10:31

It's the reaction and that's the thing.

0:10:310:10:33

-That's I think why performing is so addictive.

-Yeah.

0:10:330:10:36

-It's that two-way...

-It's so different.

0:10:360:10:38

I suppose if it was the same every single time,

0:10:380:10:40

same audience members every time, you'd probably get bored.

0:10:400:10:43

As a singer sometimes, do you feel you can be very vulnerable,

0:10:430:10:47

when you're on the stage, you can be very empowered?

0:10:470:10:50

Because it's your voice. It's your first...

0:10:500:10:52

It's almost sort of how you explain yourself, really,

0:10:520:10:56

sometimes when you're on stage.

0:10:560:10:58

All my songs are about things I've experienced,

0:10:580:11:00

things I've observed, different things and so...

0:11:000:11:03

whenever you're on stage, it's like songs you wrote,

0:11:030:11:06

in your room alone, you're kind of sharing with people

0:11:060:11:09

and I think that leaves you in a very vulnerable state,

0:11:090:11:12

but I think it's nice that I'm able to sort of share that emotion

0:11:120:11:16

with other people and people can get something out of it.

0:11:160:11:18

It means something and if you think...

0:11:180:11:21

certain lyrics that I love, you know, great lyricists over the years,

0:11:210:11:25

people that have wrote things, I suppose Bob Dylan would be one...

0:11:250:11:30

where he would explain your mind and what's going on.

0:11:300:11:34

And, you know, people really do live by songs, sometimes

0:11:340:11:37

and songs become their anthems, so to speak.

0:11:370:11:40

We were laughing about I Will Survive, but in a way

0:11:400:11:43

it is very anthemic for people and it gives people a great strength

0:11:430:11:47

and I think that's why music consolidates good things together.

0:11:470:11:50

It brings people together. It's the one language,

0:11:500:11:54

-that communicates everything, isn't it?

-When someone gets married,

0:11:540:11:57

what song they use for their first dance, they'll always remember

0:11:570:12:01

their first dance as that song and that'll stick with them for ever

0:12:010:12:04

and I think things like that are so powerful,

0:12:040:12:07

so music can just represent a certain part of your life

0:12:070:12:11

and you can think back on it, hear that song and be, like,

0:12:110:12:13

"Mind that time, when this happened..." That's incredible.

0:12:130:12:16

Songs that just ignite immediately memories and places...

0:12:160:12:19

Exactly. I think that's amazing.

0:12:190:12:21

And that heal things as well, no, it's very powerful,

0:12:210:12:25

-certain songs just stick to people's hearts.

-Exactly.

-That's great.

0:12:250:12:31

# My mind is a hurricane site

0:12:420:12:45

# I've been stitching threads to pull us by

0:12:480:12:54

# This thread's not thick

0:12:560:12:59

# And I won't ever be getting out

0:13:030:13:09

# Your heart's an explosion

0:13:090:13:13

# Makes promises it's not capable of

0:13:170:13:24

# Your heart, your heart

0:13:240:13:28

# Your heart, your heart

0:13:310:13:36

# Your heart, your heart

0:13:380:13:43

# Your heart, your heart's...

0:13:450:13:50

# An explosion

0:13:500:13:55

# My eyes are blurred

0:14:060:14:09

# Breaking down in case, I can't read between my words

0:14:090:14:17

# My shoes are worn

0:14:190:14:23

# Running my legs off just to have you around

0:14:230:14:28

# No

0:14:280:14:30

# Am I feeling cold?

0:14:320:14:36

# Sensual at first

0:14:400:14:43

# But there's no chance of me going far

0:14:430:14:48

# I am broken glass

0:14:480:14:52

# Shattered on the pavement that you walk past

0:14:540:15:00

# Your heart, your heart

0:15:010:15:05

# Your heart, your heart

0:15:080:15:13

# Your heart, your heart

0:15:150:15:19

# Your heart, your heart's

0:15:220:15:27

# An explosion. #

0:15:270:15:31

Thanks.

0:15:460:15:47

APPLAUSE

0:15:470:15:51

There's a "From Kerry to Derry" tagline

0:16:010:16:03

somewhere this year for sure,

0:16:030:16:05

but here from Derry to Kerry

0:16:050:16:07

comes tonight's Other Room act, Our Krypton Son.

0:16:070:16:11

# Will you take my hand?

0:16:160:16:21

# Down the back streets

0:16:210:16:24

# Lovers are watching

0:16:270:16:30

# The breeze rolled by

0:16:330:16:36

# And I'm not too fearful

0:16:380:16:41

# Of anything at all

0:16:440:16:47

# But I'll never let you

0:16:490:16:51

# Out of my sight

0:16:550:17:00

# Catalonian love song

0:17:020:17:06

# Catalonian love song

0:17:140:17:17

# It's not a question

0:17:230:17:26

# Of why didn't we?

0:17:280:17:31

# Oh, there aren't any questions

0:17:340:17:35

# For you or for me

0:17:390:17:43

# And the rain is relentless

0:17:450:17:49

# And it runs down the street

0:17:500:17:53

# We run to cover our heads

0:17:560:18:01

# When no-one can see

0:18:010:18:05

# You've been a long time coming

0:18:150:18:20

# Yes, you have

0:18:230:18:26

# Yes, you have

0:18:290:18:31

# Will you take my hand?

0:18:340:18:37

# Down the back streets

0:18:400:18:42

# Lovers are watching

0:18:460:18:49

# The leaves drip dry

0:18:510:18:54

# Catalonian love song

0:19:040:19:07

# Catalonian love song. #

0:19:140:19:18

# Prima donna girl, yeah

0:19:380:19:42

# All I ever wanted was the world

0:19:420:19:46

# I can't help that I need it all

0:19:460:19:50

# The prima donna life, the rise and fall

0:19:500:19:55

# You say that I'm kind of difficult

0:19:550:19:58

# But it's always someone else's fault

0:19:580:20:03

# Got you wrapped around my finger, babe

0:20:030:20:07

# You can count on me to misbehave

0:20:070:20:10

# Prima donna girl, would you do anything for me?

0:20:100:20:15

# Buy a big diamond ring for me?

0:20:150:20:19

# Would you get down on your knees for me?

0:20:190:20:23

# Pop that pretty question right now, baby,

0:20:230:20:27

# Beauty queen on a silver screen

0:20:270:20:31

# Living life like I'm in a dream

0:20:310:20:35

# I know I've got a big ego

0:20:350:20:38

# I really don't know why it's such a big deal, though

0:20:380:20:43

# And I'm sad to the core, core, core,

0:20:430:20:47

# Every day is a chore, chore, chore

0:20:470:20:51

# When you give, I want more, more, more

0:20:510:20:55

# Cos I'm a prima donna girl, yeah

0:20:550:21:00

# All I ever wanted was the world

0:21:000:21:04

# I can't help that I need it all

0:21:040:21:09

# The prima donna life, the rise and fall

0:21:090:21:13

# You say that I'm kinda difficult

0:21:130:21:16

# But it's always someone else's fault

0:21:160:21:19

# Got you wrapped around my finger, babe

0:21:210:21:25

# You can count on me to misbehave, Prima donna girl

0:21:250:21:30

# Fill the void up with celluloid

0:21:300:21:33

# Take a picture, I'm with the boys

0:21:340:21:37

# Get what I want, cos I asked for it

0:21:370:21:41

# Not because I'm really that deserving of it,

0:21:410:21:45

# Living life like I'm in a play

0:21:450:21:49

# In the limelight, I want to stay

0:21:490:21:53

# Yeah, I know I've got a big ego

0:21:530:21:57

# I really don't know why it's such a big deal, though

0:21:570:22:01

# Going up, going, down, down, down

0:22:010:22:05

# Anything for the crown, crown, crown

0:22:050:22:08

# When the light's dimming down, down, down,

0:22:080:22:12

# I spin around

0:22:120:22:15

# Cos I'm a prima donna girl, yeah

0:22:150:22:20

# All I ever wanted was the world

0:22:200:22:24

# I can't help that I need it all

0:22:270:22:31

# The prima donna life, the rise and fall

0:22:320:22:37

# You say that I'm kinda difficult

0:22:380:22:44

# But it's always someone else's fault

0:22:440:22:48

# Got you wrapped around my finger, babe

0:22:480:22:52

# You can count on me to misbehave

0:22:520:22:56

# Prima donna girl, yeah,

0:23:000:23:01

# All I ever wanted was the world

0:23:040:23:07

# I can't help that I need it all

0:23:070:23:11

# The prima donna life, the rise and fall

0:23:110:23:15

# You say that I'm kinda difficult

0:23:150:23:18

# But it's always someone else's fault

0:23:180:23:22

# Got you wrapped around my finger, babe

0:23:230:23:27

# You can count on me to misbehave

0:23:270:23:30

# Primadonna girl. #

0:23:300:23:35

APPLAUSE

0:23:350:23:40

Would you be honest with people when they ask you

0:23:400:23:43

if it is about them, or who's that song about, what's it about?

0:23:430:23:46

-Have you ever lied?

-Yeah.

0:23:460:23:50

Massively!

0:23:500:23:53

Sometimes it's, kind of not fair on people in terms of...

0:23:530:23:59

If it was 400 years ago and I was writing some folk song

0:23:590:24:03

about a guy, it would be fine

0:24:030:24:06

but nowadays your reach is so huge that things become public

0:24:060:24:10

very quickly and I would hate for people

0:24:100:24:13

-to know who my songs were about.

-When the feeling is gone

0:24:130:24:16

under the machine, as it were, do you then filter it,

0:24:160:24:22

so it doesn't hurt so much when it's coming out or do you just go for it?

0:24:220:24:26

Um, it's funny that you say that because I would usually say no,

0:24:260:24:32

I don't censor things, but

0:24:320:24:35

it depends how much you care about someone

0:24:350:24:37

and how long after the fact it is you know, like,

0:24:370:24:41

if you're broken up with someone because, generally speaking,

0:24:410:24:43

I don't really write songs when I'm feeling really emotional or sad

0:24:430:24:47

or angry, it's usually after I've had time to reflect on it,

0:24:470:24:50

sometimes it's like three or four months after something's happened.

0:24:500:24:54

I can never write at the time. Ever.

0:24:540:24:57

-Really?

-No.

-So, it just ferments?

0:24:570:25:00

Yeah. It's kind of like, it's weird because the way we see music,

0:25:000:25:05

at least I do in the pop industry, it's like you see songs as products,

0:25:050:25:12

or you come to see them as products, but really I write because it

0:25:120:25:15

-helps me work things out in my own head.

-Yeah, yeah, very much so.

0:25:150:25:19

So if I never had any success from this I would still do it

0:25:190:25:22

because it's like, you know,

0:25:220:25:23

everyone expresses themselves differently

0:25:230:25:25

and some people ring a friend when they have a problem

0:25:250:25:28

-whereas I write it in a notepad!

-SHE LAUGHS

0:25:280:25:30

Right, write it in a notepad.

0:25:300:25:31

Yeah, I don't really speak about stuff like that with people.

0:25:310:25:34

And do you ever find those notepads then,

0:25:340:25:37

the ones that you haven't chucked, and say, "What was I on?"

0:25:370:25:40

It's embarrassing.

0:25:400:25:41

Or someone else finds them, that's even more embarrassing!

0:25:410:25:44

No, I have actually started burning them because if I...

0:25:440:25:49

Touch wood, but if I ever got burgled,

0:25:490:25:52

I wouldn't want anyone to find these

0:25:520:25:54

so I just get rid of them and then you know they're gone.

0:25:540:25:56

I think that's very wise,

0:25:560:26:00

and there's great healing to be had in burning things.

0:26:000:26:03

And that's almost us for another week.

0:26:050:26:07

Next week's musical merry-go-round we will be joined

0:26:070:26:10

by Savages, Katharine Philippa and Little Bear here in Derry.

0:26:100:26:14

Villagers will be appearing in Dingle and in London.

0:26:140:26:17

Where they'll also be joined by Little Bear and Laura Mvula.

0:26:170:26:20

But we still have time for one more song from Marina And The Diamonds.
