Welcome back to Other Voices,

where we continue our musical journey from Derry to Dingle

to London and back again.

On tonight's show, we have Our Krypton Son and SOAK

coming at us from Dingle.

And we have Marina And The Diamonds coming from the beautiful Glassworks

-right here in Derry and SOAK.

-SOAK will also be appearing in London.

She gets around.

To kick us off tonight, we're going to start

You're doing the rock and roll thing now,

you're clocking up the air miles, you'll be performing in Derry

and Dublin AND London and you're the only artist that's going

to perform at all three Other Voices, so how does that feel?

It's weird. It's really cool, but it's really weird.

I think the challenge is kind of like...

doing the same songs,

but making them so different each time.

And it's amazing, isn't it, how different...

When you have one song that works in one place

it can be a completely different experience in another.

-I always think...

-Sometimes it depends on the crowd

-and the atmosphere and what the sound man's like...

-Yeah.

It's different everywhere.

I was talking to Gary Lightbody and I was, like,

"How do you not get bored singing Chasing Cars and he was, like,

"Because the audience makes it different every single time."

It's the reaction and that's the thing.

-That's I think why performing is so addictive.

-Yeah.

-It's that two-way...

-It's so different.

I suppose if it was the same every single time,

same audience members every time, you'd probably get bored.

As a singer sometimes, do you feel you can be very vulnerable,

when you're on the stage, you can be very empowered?

Because it's your voice. It's your first...

It's almost sort of how you explain yourself, really,

sometimes when you're on stage.

All my songs are about things I've experienced,

things I've observed, different things and so...

whenever you're on stage, it's like songs you wrote,

in your room alone, you're kind of sharing with people

and I think that leaves you in a very vulnerable state,

but I think it's nice that I'm able to sort of share that emotion

with other people and people can get something out of it.

It means something and if you think...

certain lyrics that I love, you know, great lyricists over the years,

people that have wrote things, I suppose Bob Dylan would be one...

where he would explain your mind and what's going on.

And, you know, people really do live by songs, sometimes

and songs become their anthems, so to speak.

We were laughing about I Will Survive, but in a way

it is very anthemic for people and it gives people a great strength

and I think that's why music consolidates good things together.

It brings people together. It's the one language,

-that communicates everything, isn't it?

-When someone gets married,

what song they use for their first dance, they'll always remember

their first dance as that song and that'll stick with them for ever

and I think things like that are so powerful,

so music can just represent a certain part of your life

and you can think back on it, hear that song and be, like,

"Mind that time, when this happened..." That's incredible.

Songs that just ignite immediately memories and places...

Exactly. I think that's amazing.

And that heal things as well, no, it's very powerful,

-certain songs just stick to people's hearts.

-Exactly.

Would you be honest with people when they ask you

if it is about them, or who's that song about, what's it about?

-Have you ever lied?

-Yeah.

Massively!

Sometimes it's, kind of not fair on people in terms of...

If it was 400 years ago and I was writing some folk song

about a guy, it would be fine

but nowadays your reach is so huge that things become public

very quickly and I would hate for people

-to know who my songs were about.

-When the feeling is gone

under the machine, as it were, do you then filter it,

so it doesn't hurt so much when it's coming out or do you just go for it?

Um, it's funny that you say that because I would usually say no,

I don't censor things, but

it depends how much you care about someone

and how long after the fact it is you know, like,

if you're broken up with someone because, generally speaking,

I don't really write songs when I'm feeling really emotional or sad

or angry, it's usually after I've had time to reflect on it,

sometimes it's like three or four months after something's happened.

I can never write at the time. Ever.

-Really?

-No.

-So, it just ferments?

Yeah. It's kind of like, it's weird because the way we see music,

at least I do in the pop industry, it's like you see songs as products,

or you come to see them as products, but really I write because it

-helps me work things out in my own head.

-Yeah, yeah, very much so.

So if I never had any success from this I would still do it

because it's like, you know,

everyone expresses themselves differently

and some people ring a friend when they have a problem

-whereas I write it in a notepad!

Right, write it in a notepad.

Yeah, I don't really speak about stuff like that with people.

And do you ever find those notepads then,

the ones that you haven't chucked, and say, "What was I on?"

It's embarrassing.

Or someone else finds them, that's even more embarrassing!

No, I have actually started burning them because if I...

Touch wood, but if I ever got burgled,

I wouldn't want anyone to find these

so I just get rid of them and then you know they're gone.

I think that's very wise,

and there's great healing to be had in burning things.
