I guess it marks the end of an era.

I don't think so, not really. It is a special programme though -

not only the European charts, but also the Southeast Asian charts.

As you may know, I've been on holiday the past couple of weeks.

-I didn't know that.

-Yes, John, I was in the Far East. Actually, I have

a feeling you won't enjoy this next bit of the programme.

I think he's probably right about this,

cos what we're going to see now is the lad's holiday snaps

set to music, and here he is messing about in Singapore.

Welcome to Singapore.

They call it the Lion City or the Garden City, and with good reason,

because in full bloom, this place is staggeringly beautiful.

Behind me is the world famous Raffles Hotel,

which stands really in marked contrast to

the numerous modern hotels and skyscrapers in this city.

I've spent the last couple of weeks

on a fascinating jaunt throughout China and Southeast Asia,

but I've been a bit frustrated in my search for a modern music scene.

You see, in this part of the world there are no singles for sale,

only LPs or cassettes, so radio stations play album tracks,

mainly American, mixed with Asian music.

One of the most popular Asian tracks at the moment is a thing called

Fascination by Paula Tsui,

and here she is performing it at an anti-drug abuse rally in Hong Kong.

SHE SINGS IN CANTONESE

Ballads are big business here in the Far East, and that was

Paula Tsui performing in an outfit not designed by Vivian Westwood.

Despite the relatively cheap cost of LPs and cassettes here,

some for as little as the cost of a single in the UK, pop music is not

really as important for Asians as it is for us in the UK,

but that hasn't stopped China Doll from trying to change all that.

This Hong Kong-based group consists of two Chinese girls

and two European fellas, and this unit represents a bit of

a breakthrough as East meets West.

Here they are with one of their latest tunes,

China Doll, one of Asia's future music hopes.

Well, despite international successes for British acts

in other areas of the world, Southeast Asia remains

largely unaware of what's happening back at home.

In Singapore though, The Eurythmics and ABC have recently enjoyed

very good LP reviews in the local press, and in Hong Kong,

Dexys Midnight Runners' Come On Eileen was one of

the most-played records on the radio.

Next up it's a Chinese movie star,

television personality and song and dance man.

He's also a heart-throb for millions of Asians and women.

He's called Lam and here he is performing Mirages.

doing the Eurovision, erm, well, the European chart.

Well, actually, no. Unfortunately, it's neither of these things.

It's a band, "un band" as they're called in this part of the world,
