After much speculation, One Direction broke hearts

when the boys called a hiatus to focus on their solo careers.

Zayn was first to release a solo album,

scoring him a top ten hit.

He took the opportunity to explore a new sound, influenced by Bob Dylan

Just Hold On, on The X Factor, with friend and superstar DJ Steve Aoki.

Harry and Liam have also signed solo record deals,

and we look forward to seeing what they have in store for us in 2017.

The festival season kicked off with Radio 1's Big Weekend in Exeter.

Headlined by Mumford & Sons, and local boys Coldplay.

Coldplay then raced over to Glastonbury to headline again,

alongside Muse and Adele.

While Foals, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Biffy Clyro

whipped up the crowd into a fevered frenzy over at Reading.

and we hope that it's not forever.

Who run the world? Girls. Or at least these three pop maidens do.

Beyonce floored us with yet another critically acclaimed album,

Lemonade.

Adele cleaned up at the Brit Awards,

winning four out of five she was nominated for,

and Lady Gaga proved she can act as well as sing

when she bagged the Golden Globe.

2016 has seen the passing of a staggering number

of talented artists.

And so we celebrate the lives of the musicians we have lost.

I think we should probably get all glassy-eyed and nostalgic.

at some of the biggest musical moments of 2016.

2016 has been a huge year for grime,

with grime acts stealing the spotlight

at many of the country's biggest festivals.

Boy Better Know gave a knockout performance

at the traditionally rock-oriented Reading Festival,

while Glastonbury even dedicated an entire stage to grime for a day,

featuring artists like Lady Leshurr and Stormzy.

CROWD CHANTS

And, of course, Skepta sensationally won the Mercury Prize

for his album Konnichiwa,

the first grime act to win since Dizzee Rascal won it in 2003.

But it was Skepta's mum who won the internet,

after her celebration dance on stage.

The year started off well for Kanye West,

with the well-received release of his album The Life Of Pablo.

But things became turbulent later in the year,

culminating with the abrupt cancellation of his tour

and Kanye being reportedly hospitalised

with mental health issues in November.

No official statement has been released,

but we hope he gets back on track in 2017.

Since the inclusion of streaming in the charts,

the skirmish for the number one spot

has become an even tougher battlefield this year,

with a dramatic drop in changeover at the top.

Drake's One Dance led the charts for 15 consecutive weeks,

after becoming the most-streamed song of all time.

In fact, the only song we've ever loved more was...

But as streaming services target a global audience

with their playlists,

it may also lead to more exposure for our European friends,

like Lukas Graham, Alan Walker and Zara Larsson,

who all had top ten solo debuts in the UK charts this year.

A digital boost from 2016's viral dance craze

also saw a couple of teenagers, Zay Hilfigerrr and Zayion McCall,

climb the charts after the internet couldn't stop Juju-ing On That Beat.

But the biggest viral sensation this year had no dance moves.

The Mannequin Challenge was all about standing still,

and the craze catapulted Rae Sremmurd's track Black Beatles

up the charts.

It's been a hit with music heavyweights,

including Adele, Britney Spears,

and even an original Beatle - Sir Paul McCartney,

proving that anyone who's anyone has a Mannequin Challenge video.
