Hello and welcome

0:00:190:00:20

to the UK Pipe Band Championships 2014.

0:00:200:00:23

Now, this year we make a very welcome return to grounds of Stormont Estate.

0:00:230:00:26

We were last here in 2010

0:00:260:00:28

for the European Championships,

0:00:280:00:30

and just like then, Belfast City Council are hosting

0:00:300:00:32

this spectacular celebration of Drum Majors, of dancing,

0:00:320:00:36

and of over 100 pipe bands, all competing to be the UK champions.

0:00:360:00:39

Yeah, this is a huge competition.

0:00:390:00:41

It's one of the five major events in the piping calendar,

0:00:410:00:44

along with the Scottish, the British, the European

0:00:440:00:47

and the World Championships.

0:00:470:00:49

But for today we're going to give you a flavour of what's unfolding

0:00:490:00:53

here at Stormont Estate,

0:00:530:00:54

and we're going to kick things off with the Juvenile class.

0:00:540:00:57

And what better way to start today's coverage

0:00:590:01:01

than with the winning band in this category, George Heriot's School?

Robert, if ever a man had credentials

0:04:210:04:24

for spotting a winner, it's you.

0:04:240:04:25

Well, I've been at it for about 40 years -

0:04:250:04:27

or more years than I care to mention, Helen,

0:04:270:04:29

so I maybe know a wee bit about it.

0:04:290:04:31

Although some of the competitors might not agree!

0:04:310:04:33

But there you go.

0:04:330:04:34

Well, you know, when you look at the bands,

0:04:340:04:36

you know what the judges are going to be looking for,

0:04:360:04:38

so give me an idea of that.

0:04:380:04:39

What the judges will be looking for is precision and technique.

0:04:390:04:43

Playing the pipes, you see, you only have nine notes.

0:04:430:04:46

Within those nine notes there's amazing intricacy.

0:04:460:04:49

It's all the wee twiddly bits that the listener,

0:04:490:04:51

who's not the piper, will hear.

0:04:510:04:53

Now, these wee twiddly bits have to be absolutely spot on,

0:04:530:04:57

and the bands who get those twiddly bits correct

0:04:570:05:01

will be the ones that'll get the highest marks.

0:05:010:05:03

Over and above that, they have to have tone, you know,

0:05:030:05:07

a wonderful clarity and projection in the sound.

0:05:070:05:11

-A lot to look forward to.

-Very much so.

-Yeah.

0:05:110:05:13

And I think, for all our armchair enthusiasts,

0:05:130:05:16

Robert will be joining Ralph later watching the Grade 1 bands,

0:05:160:05:19

and you can see how your opinions compare with Robert's.

0:05:190:05:23

Back to the competition now, and performances from Grade 3B.

0:05:270:05:31

We join Colmcille Pipe Band

0:05:310:05:33

under the watchful eye of Pipe Major Mark Hasson.

And, with their version of The Brown Haired Maid,

0:08:040:08:07

is Craigmount Pipe Band.

0:08:070:08:09

And this lively rendition earned them 2nd place in Grade 3B.

0:12:560:12:59

These Drum Major finalists make it look easy, but believe me,

0:13:050:13:09

to get to this level they need precision, rhythm,

0:13:090:13:12

technique and discipline.

0:13:120:13:15

It's lovely to watch.

0:13:150:13:16

Always a treat to watch, the Novice Juvenile Grade -

0:13:400:13:43

and they didn't disappoint.

0:13:430:13:45

Top honours went to West Lothian Schools.

Well, that's all we have time for for today,

0:28:050:28:07

but we'll be back tomorrow night with more coverage

0:28:070:28:10

from the Stormont Estate, when all eyes will be on Arena 1

0:28:100:28:14

to see who will take the coveted title of UK Champions 2014.

0:28:140:28:17

Yeah, and as we speak,

0:28:170:28:19

Grade 1 bands are in the tuning park getting ready.

0:28:190:28:21

Last minute bit of practice, all very important.

There's still all to play for, as well. Trust me -

0:28:230:28:26

you do not want to miss it.

0:28:260:28:27

-See you next time.

-Bye!
