-But we start with the

-featured county, Meirionnydd.

-Meirionydd

-is a mountainous county.

-The terrain

-is one of the roughest in Wales.

-The county

-is quite thinly populated.

-I'd say the people are

-loyal, friendly and welcoming.

-I've always received a warm welcome.

-I've visited plenty of farms

-over the years.

-Agriculture is very important

-to the region.

-It's a vital foundation

-of the rural economy.

-Most of our farms are sheep farms,

-mainly with Welsh mountain breeds.

-There are dairy farms,

-mainly raising store cattle...

-..to be sold for fattening

-in other areas.

-There is diversification

-in an effort to increase income.

-We have taken advantage of

-the numbers of tourists...

-..that visit the county

-during the summer.

-Visitors come for the beaches,

-the mountains, walking and so on.

-We must remember that visitors

-bring work to the county.

-That helps our rural economy.

-My name is Catrin Lisa Jones.

-This year I have the role of

-ambassador of the Royal Welsh Show.

-I began my role 18 months ago.

-I haven't missed one Show

-since I was born.

-I was four weeks old

-at my first Show.

-I've been every year.

-It's an integral part of my year.

-It's a family holiday

-and a social event.

-The feature county is asked to raise

-money towards the Royal Welsh Show.

-We chose to raise money

-for a water project.

-We've held events including

-pig races and auctions.

-The ambassador has to help

-with the money-raising.

-As the county has a water project...

-..I decided to kayak

-along the coast of Meirionnydd.

-I started in Porthmadog

-and finished in Aberdyfi.

-The journey took 12 hours

-one weekend in June.

-Meirionnydd is

-a small but unique county.

-There are plenty of enthusiastic

-people that get together...

-..to strengthen the social element

-in an energetic way.

-My name is Richard Jones.

-Everyone calls me Dic Auctioneer.

-I'm president this year.

-It's a great honour.

-The Show is special

-because of the friendship there.

-People come here

-from all sorts of places.

-This friendliness is unique

-to the Royal Welsh Show.

-I don't think

-you can put your finger on it.

-There's an amazing atmosphere,

-the bustle, meeting people.

-You might see old friends for the

-first time in years.

-They could be staying in the next

-caravan. It's a special atmosphere.

-That's what's special about the way

-the show is organized...

-..the way each county in turn

-becomes the feature county.

-It's Meirionnydd this year.

-It will be Meirionnydd's Show.

-I hope we see a taste of

-Meirionnydd at the Show.

-We're here to compete

-with the Welsh Black cattle.

-We're competing tomorrow.

-It's Meirionnydd's year.

-We're looking forward to exhibiting

-for the first time in four years.

-I'm exhibiting Charolais

-and Limousin cattle tomorrow.

-I'm looking forward to the Show.

-There's a lot of pressure

-on the class tomorrow.

-I'm crossing my fingers.

-I'm looking forward to the beef

-cattle competitions this week.

-I'm particularly looking forward

-to the Team of Five competition.

-It's one of the highlights of Wales

-and possibly the world's best show.

-I have to say, it hasn't been easy

-to live off beef or dairy recently.

-But the faithful come and make

-sure the shop front looks good.

-We've got good judges this year.

-I'll tell you one thing,

-I'm old fashioned.

-There is a Hereford bull here.

-He's the best bull I've ever seen.

-I'm Dai Lewis

-from Penrhiw, Llandysul.

-I'm an auctioneer and a surveyor.

-I also do a lot of farming here

-with Hafina, my wife.

-We've been here for over 40 years.

-I also run an estate agency here

-in Llandysul and Newcastle Emlyn.

-Four seventy, four seventy,

-four seventy, done, four seventy.

-Our main delight

-is breeding Charolais cattle.

-They really please the eye.

-Big, white,

-well-proportioned cattle.

-We've cut down a bit recently.

-We're getting a bit older.

-We've switched

-to keeping store cattle now.

-I've been the chairman...

-..of the British Charolais Society.

-As well as that...

-..I was also the 2012 President

-of Charolais International.

-This is the biggest calf

-we've ever had.

-He's also one of the liveliest.

-He was over 70 kilos.

-He's come along well

-with his mother.

-I love the breed because they've

-been good to us on this farm.

-I can't complain.

-This old lady is my favourite.

-Aren't you?

-I consider it a great privilege

-to be asked to adjudicate...

-..the Team of Five competition

-at the Royal Welsh.

-I've been commentating on this

-competition for nearly 25 years.

-It's the premier category for me...

-..especially in the cattle section.

-It's a real picture to see the ring

-filled with teams of five.

-It's a real sight for sore eyes.

-I'm a little nervous because I've

-commentated on several of them...

-..and been confident enough

-to predict the result.

-It's very different

-in the commentary box.

-Standing in the middle making the

-real decision will be quite a task.

-The Royal Welsh Show

-is something very special.

-I started at the Show in 1974...

-..as a commentator

-have been amazing.

-It's still developing as

-we try something new every year.

-One thing you want to do every

-..is develop the showground

-and move things on.

-You've done that again this year.

-It's important

-to move with the times.

-We have to make sure the showground

-is fit to host the Show every year.

-This year, we did a lot of work

-on the horse section.

-We've got more stables

-and better stables.

-It's fantastic and as you can see,

-it's ready to go.

-You really enjoy your job,

-To have the chance to work here in

-Builth Wells, I'm from Builth.

-I work over there in that office.

-I get to look

-at the showground every day.

-I can see the build up to the Show.

-It's fantastic.

-I'm Arthur Owen and I farm here in

-Bodysgaw, Llanefydd, near Denbigh.

-I have 350 dairy cattle.

-They calve in September.

-Friesians crossed with Jerseys.

-They are efficient

-converters of grass...

-..into milk and money for me.

-Grass is the cheapest fodder

-available for cattle.

-It's also the healthiest.

-It's the simplest thing in the

-world. Send them out to pasture.

-Tom Tudor is the name.

-I farm Llysun Farm,

-Llanerfyl, Montgomeryshire.

-We bought the farm on a Wednesday...

-..and got married on the Saturday.

-That was in 1968.

-A few years have passed.

-That was just after the Welsh

-Grassland Society was formed.

-They've been part of my life

-forever.

-We keep sheep and suckling cows.

-There is nothing

-as good for you as..

-..Welsh lamb raised on nothing but

-grassland and their mother's milk.

-The same applies to cattle.

-The best quality beef comes from

-calves raised by pastured cows.

-That's just perfect.

-We have to produce grassland

-of the highest quality.

-We also have to

-utilize it really efficiently.

-It all boils down to how effectively

-we use that perfect grassland.

-Gerwyn Owen of Pantygwiail, Dihewyd,

-between Lampeter and Aberaeron.

-My parents moved up here in 1955.

-The whole family

-including six children.

-Most of us worked at home

-for a while.

-We are now down to four partners.

-Me and my wife Glenys

-and Andrew and his wife Ann.

-It's run as a family farm.

-We've always been dairy farmers.

-We've been milk producers but we've

-never overstocked with dairy cattle.

-We make the best of what we have.

-My father won the first Welsh

-Grassland competition back in 1971.

-I went on to win prizes in British

-silage competitions in 1999.

-In 2013, it was my son

-Andrew's turn to step up.

-He also won

-the Welsh Grassland Award.

-That's three generations of success.

-I've been nominated because

-I use my grassland effectively.

-I'm looking forward

-to the new format this year.

-No-one knows the result

-until the day.

-It's a good thing because

-it keeps you on tenterhooks.

-It creates more excitement.

-Or maybe stress!

-It's a big achievement

-to be in the top three.

-I don't know how it will

-go from here onwards.

-It's quite competitive.

-I don't know if we fit the bill.

-I'm not at all confident.

-The three in the final

-are all winners.

-I'm not nervous.

-I'm pleased to be in the top three.

-That's an honour in itself.

-Winning would be a huge honour

-because it's at the show.

-You compete to win but I'll be happy

-with second or third too.

-Not really!

-Chief Steward at the sheep section.

-We have an army of stewards.

-There are 3,000 sheep coming in.

-There's paperwork coming in

-and paperwork going out.

-The paperwork is almost more

-important than the animals.

-We work as one big team.

-We have a lot of fun together

-and there's plenty of leg-pulling.

-Helen has been with us for years.

-She's had a child

-As I walk around the sheep ring...

-..it's clear

-to see the standard's high.

-There's a new face keeping an eye

-on it all this year.

-I was born and raised on this farm,

-Penlan Y Mor in Ceredigion.

-My grandparents moved here

-in October 1962.

-We're two families farming here now.

-We keep sheep and a dairy herd.

-There's plenty of work

-on the farm...

-..but between two families,

-we keep it going.

-I live in Cardiff now.

-It's always nice to return

-to West Wales and Penlan Y Mor.

-There's always room

-for another set of hands.

-There's plenty of work to do here.

-We've just finished

-the lambing season.

-It's nice to come back

-and be part of that team.

-I love going to the Royal Welsh Show

-every year anyway.

-Presenting from the Show this year

-is an additional honour.

-It gives me an excuse to speak to

-some of the Show's big characters.

-It's also great to be part

-of a week and an event...

-..which celebrates Welsh produce.

-I can't wait for it to begin.

-The enthusiasm of exhibitors

-in the sheep ring...

-..here and at others shows

-across Wales is infectious.

-It was all new to me

-until I started judging stock.

-I went to meet the sheep exhibitors

-on their farms.

-Their enthusiasm is inspiring.

-Speaking to them for five minutes

-is enough.

-You can feel their passion

-for what they do.

-They think they're competing with

-the best in Wales and they are.

-For anyone coming to the Show...

-Luckily I came first.

-They are my breed, if anyone asks.

-see more weaknesses...

-..than you would in other breeds.

-I'll keep an open mind.

-familiar voice to us, Charles Arch.

-Charles Arch is the name.

-A Welshman with two English names.

-The truth is that our family

-is originally from England.

-But there are many generations

-of us...

-..who have been born and raised

-in this country.

-I was born just outside

-Pontrhydfendigaid in Strata Florida.

-There weren't many machines around

-at that time.

-My father worked with horses.

-I started working with dogs and

-rounding up sheep on the mountains.

-Dogs, sheep and horses are my world.

-She has been with me

-for thirty years.

-A little over that.

-Fflur Aur (Golden Fflur)

-is her name.

-It's a regal name. As far

-as I'm concerned, she's all gold.

-She's an old mare now

-but I bought her as a young foal.

-She's been a wonderful mare for me

-but she's too old now.

-She'll die on these acres,

-she won't get taken away.

-She and I are old-stagers.

-I was away

-for more than forty years.

-The main reason I returned...

-..was that there were three or

-four old friends of mine still here.

-We meet up, have a drink

-and put the world to rights.

-Because of that,

-it's a lovely place to live.

-There aren't enough hours

-in the day for him.

-He's always doing something.

-I have a question to ask you.

-Don't get angry.

-Have you finally got a bowler hat

-this year that fits properly?

-You normally carry it around.

-I've found one of my father's

-old ones in the garage.

-I've brushed it,

-spat on it and polished it.

-I think it'll do the job.

-It needs to be the size

-of a milking bucket to fit him!

-I started with the Show in 1948.

-I've only missed

-one Show since then.

-This year

-is both a challenge and a thrill.

-This time around...

-..every horse in front of me

-will already be champions.

-I'll be looking for the animal...

-..that gives me

-that extra little thrill.

-That's what wins the day

-A horse that comes in showing off.

-One that demands your attention.
