offences have taken place. Now, time to look at the news is | :00:00. | :00:00.
seen across the US a couple of hours ago in ABC World News with Diane | :00:00. | :00:10.
Sawyer. Tonight, out of the shadows. They | :00:11. | :00:15.
blow to the secret spy programme the White House has called crucial to | :00:16. | :00:19.
the fight against terror. Exclusive new video. And airports doing that | :00:20. | :00:27.
caught baggage handlers red-handed. -- airport sting. The lottery to get | :00:28. | :00:39.
worse $500 million. Is it impossible to win or can you increase your luck | :00:40. | :00:50.
tonight? Good evening. We begin with a high-stakes face-off over security | :00:51. | :00:55.
and spying in America. It's about the NSA and that controversial | :00:56. | :00:57.
campaign to collect information on the phone calls of ordinary | :00:58. | :01:02.
Americans. The White House has called it a vital weapon in the | :01:03. | :01:05.
fight against terrorism but today, a federal judge delivered a body blow, | :01:06. | :01:09.
calling the programme simply unconstitutional. This is a | :01:10. | :01:18.
challenge to a programme that the president says has saved lives. The | :01:19. | :01:23.
federal judge declared flatly that he believes the programme is | :01:24. | :01:30.
unconstitutional. It may be the ultimate victory for fugitive NSA | :01:31. | :01:34.
hacker Edward Snowden. Classified documents he leaked over the summer | :01:35. | :01:36.
revealed just how much information the NSA collects on Americans and | :01:37. | :01:43.
directly led to today 's ruling, and issued the NSA 's massive | :01:44. | :01:52.
database... Today, the federal judge said that the programme almost | :01:53. | :01:54.
certainly violates a reasonable expectation of privacy and is an | :01:55. | :01:59.
unreasonable search and the fourth Amendment. He called the government | :02:00. | :02:06.
programme almost Orwellian. The President has long said that the | :02:07. | :02:11.
programme and another that tracks information online is a critical | :02:12. | :02:16.
tool in keeping the country safe. We have saved lives. We know of at | :02:17. | :02:22.
least 50 threats that have been averted because of this information | :02:23. | :02:27.
not just in the US but in some cases threats in Germany. Lives have been | :02:28. | :02:36.
saved. Today, the judge said there is a lack of evidence that a | :02:37. | :02:38.
terrorist attack has ever been prevented because searching the NSA | :02:39. | :02:42.
database was faster than other investigative tactics. The programme | :02:43. | :02:47.
is limited to collecting information on who called whom and from where | :02:48. | :02:52.
and is not eavesdropping. When it comes to telephone calls, no one is | :02:53. | :02:58.
listening to your telephone calls. That's not what this programme is | :02:59. | :03:03.
about. Despite the judge 's strong language, the programme will | :03:04. | :03:06.
continue, as the government pursues an almost certain appeal. Make no | :03:07. | :03:11.
mistake, this will be just the beginning of a battle that will go | :03:12. | :03:20.
all the way to the Supreme Court. We are hearing that he may have more | :03:21. | :03:23.
than 1 million documents in his possession? We know that publicly | :03:24. | :03:29.
they have said 200,000 documents at least. That is easily over 1 million | :03:30. | :03:36.
pages. The scariest thing is that intelligence officials do not know | :03:37. | :03:40.
all of what he has, so there is the prospect we could see more links | :03:41. | :03:44.
coming from Edward Snowden that could undermine yet more classified | :03:45. | :03:51.
programmes. Thank you. Now, a headline for the American economy. | :03:52. | :03:57.
Today, General Motors, the number one US automaker, revealed it would | :03:58. | :04:02.
pump $1.3 billion into plants right here at home. That means lots of new | :04:03. | :04:11.
jobs. As you know, the head of GM said the tax bailout made this | :04:12. | :04:17.
possible. Tonight, the good news from Ford. Can you guess the model | :04:18. | :04:20.
we are selling one of every 42 seconds in this country? | :04:21. | :04:25.
Tonight, a holiday greeting from American automakers. GM revealing | :04:26. | :04:33.
their will invest $40 million in several factories. This new | :04:34. | :04:41.
investment tonight, $600 million in Michigan. Those factories employing | :04:42. | :04:52.
7500 people. The new investment will help save and create 1000 jobs. This | :04:53. | :04:58.
comes just as Ford reveals they will pay a 5000 new workers in the video. | :04:59. | :05:07.
-- higher. 3300 of those jobs are in engineering and production. Tonight, | :05:08. | :05:14.
we check them this young family. It is not long ago that this man was | :05:15. | :05:18.
worried. I think everybody was a bit nervous. And tonight, more of the | :05:19. | :05:28.
global market being brought in Asia. World news seeing first in Mexico | :05:29. | :05:36.
City. All of these come from America? We checked. Even asking | :05:37. | :05:43.
where they had come from. The workers are truly benefit. Built in | :05:44. | :05:48.
Michigan and bought by the growing middle class in Mexico. And back in | :05:49. | :05:56.
America tonight, Ford revealing to us an American model is selling | :05:57. | :06:00.
every 42 seconds. There will be launched in bid designed one. -- a | :06:01. | :06:08.
redesigned. All first look at the new model. | :06:09. | :06:13.
16 vehicles coming from Ford in the coming year. The argument that the | :06:14. | :06:19.
bill at work, even though taxpayers did lose billions in the deal. Tax | :06:20. | :06:23.
revenue and unemployment could have been far worse. GM is now back. | :06:24. | :06:33.
Making it in America. This is great news. And another news | :06:34. | :06:40.
about an American giant. Google now owns these. They are robots. | :06:41. | :06:46.
High-tech robots that mimic humans and animals. They were designed for | :06:47. | :06:52.
the battlefield. No idea what they plan to do with that power. We now | :06:53. | :06:58.
move out to a large wildfire burning out of control in a majestic part on | :06:59. | :07:03.
the coast of the California. It is known for its luxury homes and | :07:04. | :07:07.
breathtaking views. Today, two houses and more than 500 acres were | :07:08. | :07:12.
destroyed. 200 firefighters are battling the smoke. The officials | :07:13. | :07:18.
say that this area is now in the middle of its price here on record. | :07:19. | :07:24.
-- driest year. A manhunt under way after a shooting at a shopping mall. | :07:25. | :07:29.
A young husband comes down after shopping with his wife. -- garden. | :07:30. | :07:37.
He was a young, promising tone. Only a few out of law school. But his | :07:38. | :07:46.
life ended in moments. The parking lot of an upscale New Jersey maul. | :07:47. | :07:51.
He was 30 years old. It was opened late last night to accommodate all | :07:52. | :07:55.
of the holiday shoppers. A little after 9pm in the parking lot, | :07:56. | :08:01.
Shotts. As soon as they walked out, I heard it, so I ducked. And a | :08:02. | :08:09.
scream. I heard screaming. It was his wife. She had just opened the | :08:10. | :08:15.
corridor when two men drove up, shot him in the head and drove away with | :08:16. | :08:21.
the car. It is obviously a car with some value. She was not injured. The | :08:22. | :08:28.
car was found abandoned. Billions of holiday shoppers descend, experts | :08:29. | :08:35.
say that parking lots are where you need to be most alert. It is a | :08:36. | :08:44.
secluded area. It is a good place for someone to perpetrate a robbery | :08:45. | :08:49.
against you. How can you stay safe? Park near other cars or a parking | :08:50. | :08:53.
attendant. Always carry your purse or back in front of you. If somebody | :08:54. | :08:58.
takes your handbag from you, you release it. Let them take it. The | :08:59. | :09:02.
handbag and its contents are replaceable. And have your keys in | :09:03. | :09:10.
your hand. A little extra protection this busy shopping season. | :09:11. | :09:17.
Up next, a controversy and some questions about something millions | :09:18. | :09:22.
of us all at home on the sink. Antibacterial soap and body washes. | :09:23. | :09:30.
Are they better at stopping the spread of illness? The FDA has | :09:31. | :09:37.
issued a challenge. It is a warning shot to makers of | :09:38. | :09:41.
antibacterial soap who claimed that the products kill wardrobes. The | :09:42. | :09:45.
product says that they have to prove it. Some studies say antibacterial | :09:46. | :09:54.
and regular soap do equally well. We have its hands with thousands of | :09:55. | :10:03.
bacteria. The hands were then washed with regular soap and antibacterial | :10:04. | :10:09.
soap. The antibacterial soap raised 75% of bacteria. The regular soap, | :10:10. | :10:15.
75% as well. The FDA is concerned. Could it contribute to dangerous and | :10:16. | :10:19.
to dangerous antibiotic resistance? The trade group representing | :10:20. | :10:23.
antibacterial soaps since the perplexed that there would be a | :10:24. | :10:26.
suggestion that there is no evidence there are beneficial. This is a big | :10:27. | :10:35.
move by the FDA. Health and environmental groups have been | :10:36. | :10:38.
calling for this for quite sometime. It may mark the beginning of the end | :10:39. | :10:41.
for those products that cannot the benchmark. Assuming the regulation | :10:42. | :10:49.
is approved, 180 days. The companies have a year from today to make their | :10:50. | :10:54.
case. They will either have to change the product or change the | :10:55. | :10:58.
label. In the meantime, washing with soap and water for 20 seconds is | :10:59. | :11:06.
always the best way to go. Next, beating the odds. The mega | :11:07. | :11:11.
jackpot lottery prize climbing faster and faster. Heading for the | :11:12. | :11:13.
first billion dollars jackpot? And with this holiday season, a | :11:14. | :12:36.
piece of video to show you tonight. We have exclusive new pictures of a | :12:37. | :12:42.
sting that caught a baggage carrier stealing from the luggage of | :12:43. | :12:49.
carriers. -- travellers. You are looking at airline baggage | :12:50. | :12:53.
handlers stealing. Caught on secret cameras hidden in the belly of the | :12:54. | :12:57.
plane. This baggage handler finds a wallet, jackpot. He even takes the | :12:58. | :13:03.
time to count the cash. He checks were more. How about some credit | :13:04. | :13:11.
cards? This obtained exclusively by ABC News. They have a holiday | :13:12. | :13:16.
warning about some airport workers. There are hard-working, honest | :13:17. | :13:20.
people by and large. But some people are tempted. The listing was set up | :13:21. | :13:27.
in summer after an airport got complaints from passengers about | :13:28. | :13:31.
missing items. Two-week, cash, watches, iPads and iPhones. Workers | :13:32. | :13:36.
accused of stealing thousands of dollars. Nearly 600 ports of luggage | :13:37. | :13:44.
theft in the past two years. Authorities believe that there are | :13:45. | :13:46.
underreported and happen routinely across the country. Some airports | :13:47. | :13:53.
have stepped up patrols and added additional cameras. Looking to | :13:54. | :14:00.
protect yourself? Experts say never pack valuables in your checked | :14:01. | :14:05.
luggage. If you carry on is going to be checked at the last minute, take | :14:06. | :14:09.
the time to open the back and remove your valuables. | :14:10. | :14:17.
Next, that lottery jackpot that could be heading towards $1 billion. | :14:18. | :14:21.
You can see from the countdown clock the drawing is tomorrow night. $586 | :14:22. | :14:29.
million and growing right now. Have you odds make it impossible to win | :14:30. | :14:36.
or can you increase luck? Move over, centre. Millions are | :14:37. | :14:41.
banking on mega millions to deliver their ultimate Christmas gift. The | :14:42. | :14:48.
$586 million jackpot is the second largest in history. If you are not | :14:49. | :14:54.
in it, you can't win it. But ever since they changed the game, | :14:55. | :14:56.
decreasing the chances of winning, nobody has won. Since October one to | :14:57. | :15:03.
have been 21 straight drawings without a winner. It is the longest | :15:04. | :15:07.
streak of 25 when this drawings back in 2000. You now have a 159 million | :15:08. | :15:17.
chance of winning. The worst odds of any American lottery ever. But | :15:18. | :15:22.
statisticians say that somebody is bound to win eventually. The higher | :15:23. | :15:27.
the value, the more people interested in playing. The more | :15:28. | :15:30.
people who play, you get a decent probability. As tradition would have | :15:31. | :15:36.
it, this past Friday the 13th proved unlucky. 156 million tickets were | :15:37. | :15:46.
sold. Yet nobody won. Lottery officials expect that by the next | :15:47. | :15:51.
drawing, roughly 70% of the possible numbers will be in play. If you win | :15:52. | :16:00.
tomorrow, your net worth would be even higher than fiance. And if the | :16:01. | :16:09.
jackpot rolls over two more times, $1 billion could be an estimated | :16:10. | :16:13.
$540 million cash pay-out. Your net worth would be higher than Will | :16:14. | :16:19.
Smith, Bruce Springsteen combined. How is that four in a Christmas? -- | :16:20. | :16:25.
for a Merry Christmas. Thank you so much for watching. We | :16:26. | :16:29.
will see you back your again tomorrow night. | :16:30. | :16:37.
We look to the west for our weather this week, particularly midweek | :16:38. | :16:42.
