Lots more on our website. Now, it is time for a look at the news are seen

:00:00.:00:00.

across the US couple of hours ago. Welcome. Tonight, a breakthrough in

:00:00.:00:13.

the search for the missing passenger plane. A US ship races to a new

:00:14.:00:19.

site. Word that the plane continued to fly four hours after it vanished

:00:20.:00:24.

from radar. And, what ABC news has learned about clues suggesting this

:00:25.:00:28.

may not have happened by accident. On the move, Russian forces

:00:29.:00:36.

preparing to invade Crimea? And, should shoes worn by US military be

:00:37.:00:41.

made here in the USA? A big decision coming our way.

:00:42.:00:56.

We bring you breaking news in the mystery of the passenger plane that

:00:57.:01:02.

vanished into thin air. US investigators tell ABC news they are

:01:03.:01:06.

considering the possibility, based on new clues, that what went on

:01:07.:01:09.

inside the cockpit of this play may not have been an accident. All of

:01:10.:01:16.

this as the US ship races to a new location.

:01:17.:01:26.

Two sources have told ABC news that two communication systems on the

:01:27.:01:28.

triple seven were shut down separately, suggesting there was not

:01:29.:01:34.

a catastrophic failure. They shut down less than an hour into flight.

:01:35.:01:38.

Our source called it systematic. This, as the surge is expanding.

:01:39.:01:46.

American ships are on the move tonight, looking for the jetliner

:01:47.:01:52.

even further away from its original flight path. Our top source says

:01:53.:01:54.

there is an indication it went down in the Indian Ocean, so the search

:01:55.:01:57.

grid is getting bigger and could get much bigger. Two senior US officials

:01:58.:02:03.

told us that the plane may have flown up to four hours after its

:02:04.:02:11.

last sighting on radar. It was apparently pinging a satellite every

:02:12.:02:15.

power. It is part of a monitoring system airlines can pay for the keep

:02:16.:02:18.

track of jets in the air. Malaysia Airlines was not paying, but our

:02:19.:02:23.

sources say that even if the airline is not buying the data, the signal

:02:24.:02:27.

still scope to the satellite. Based on some new information, and

:02:28.:02:32.

additional search area may be opened in the Indian Ocean. Flying four

:02:33.:02:44.

hours at at that speed mean it could have gone hundreds of miles. I don't

:02:45.:02:50.

think the aircraft is underwater and you will get a valid signal coming

:02:51.:02:55.

from the of the sea. This latest information comes from US sources.

:02:56.:03:01.

Remember those satellite photos from China that showed floating debris,

:03:02.:03:05.

the Malaysians looked today and found nothing. They say they were

:03:06.:03:09.

told by the Chinese that the images were released by mistake. With our

:03:10.:03:13.

sources telling us these communication systems were shut down

:03:14.:03:17.

deliberately, that would suggest either a hijacking or pilot suicide.

:03:18.:03:22.

Now, the search area is shifting to the Indian Ocean. 2400 square miles,

:03:23.:03:28.

they will do a grid over it. It will take months to search.

:03:29.:03:33.

If it is possible that there was control still inside the cockpit,

:03:34.:03:36.

and the plane was airborne for hours, could it have reached land?

:03:37.:03:39.

If so, where? Could the plane have soared straight

:03:40.:03:51.

past where they are searching in the ocean, crashing on dry land or even

:03:52.:03:57.

landing safely? The closest island is here. It is a tiny, rocky spot,

:03:58.:04:04.

jutting out of the ocean. No likelihood of a landing. Further

:04:05.:04:12.

out, we reach a group of 600 tiny islands and rocks, some popular with

:04:13.:04:16.

tourists. At only 37 of the islands are actually inhabited. The others

:04:17.:04:20.

are full of dense forest, but isolated. The odd that, the vast

:04:21.:04:25.

Indian Ocean. If the plane was flying for four or five hours, widen

:04:26.:04:30.

at the lens, and you can see that it could have reached as far as the

:04:31.:04:36.

jungles of Thailand, Burma, or India. There was enough fuel on

:04:37.:04:42.

board to reach those destinations. Experts say that there are spots

:04:43.:04:45.

were Red Hat does not reach out here. Search and rescue operations

:04:46.:04:52.

in Kuala Lumpur are in full force, but many are wondering that if the

:04:53.:04:56.

plane was travelling for hours, would the search be shifting in that

:04:57.:05:00.

direction? -- spots where radar does not reach.

:05:01.:05:04.

Now we have an aviation expert. Steve, this is an incredible

:05:05.:05:12.

breakthrough. Just from what we knew yesterday, we knew nothing past that

:05:13.:05:20.

49 minute mark. Today, we are pretty sure that two switches were pulled

:05:21.:05:24.

in the cockpit. You say, were pulled. That suggests deliberate. It

:05:25.:05:32.

does. Maybe it was a hijacking, may be a pilot suicide. Maybe there was

:05:33.:05:36.

an elaborate plan to take the aircraft somewhere and do something

:05:37.:05:40.

with it. All of those things we were thinking about yesterday were

:05:41.:05:42.

probably leaning more towards something that those pilots or one

:05:43.:05:45.

of the pilot did, that involved something catastrophic. What that

:05:46.:05:50.

illiterate act may be is still to be determined. Four hours. We now know

:05:51.:06:01.

that it flew for four to five hours. Dig about how far it could have gone

:06:02.:06:07.

in and length of time. We know this from some US capability. Do we know

:06:08.:06:12.

pretty much exactly where the plane is? Unfortunately not. The data that

:06:13.:06:18.

is coming out just says that the aeroplane was airborne. It doesn't

:06:19.:06:21.

tell us how fast it was going or in what direction. All we know is that

:06:22.:06:24.

it was flying. That means it could be anywhere within about 3500 miles.

:06:25.:06:31.

Is it possible that the plane could have landed somewhere and we have no

:06:32.:06:36.

idea? It is possible, but that would be a stretch. Following a new twist

:06:37.:06:55.

in the clues. The end of 18 will be staying on the street to bring you

:06:56.:06:58.

new details. Now we turn to the other big news of the day - the

:06:59.:07:01.

Ukraine. The growing fear of Russian military action. The vote is coming.

:07:02.:07:14.

We look at the countdown. Preparing a full-scale invasion, that is what

:07:15.:07:18.

Ukraine fears these Russian forces are doing. Almost 9000 troops,

:07:19.:07:25.

hundreds of tanks and artillery. Russian forces already control the

:07:26.:07:30.

peninsular. After a referendum on Sunday it will almost certainly

:07:31.:07:36.

asked to join Russia. There is no justification, no legality to the

:07:37.:07:41.

referendum. So far, neither threats nor diplomacy have produced results.

:07:42.:07:45.

Ukraine's instability is becoming deadly. In the eastern city of

:07:46.:07:52.

Donetsk, at least two were reported killed. An ominous sign of a country

:07:53.:08:00.

being pulled apart. Vladimir Putin said Russia did not instigate the

:08:01.:08:07.

crisis. He appears ready to welcome Crimea. The question is, will he

:08:08.:08:15.

wants more? The unrest in Ukraine rustled American stocks here at

:08:16.:08:19.

home. The market in a freefall, down more than 200 points after news of

:08:20.:08:27.

the Russian troops on the move. Next - a crash into a crowd of their

:08:28.:08:32.

popular music festival. Mayhem in the streets of Boston after police

:08:33.:08:37.

they a drunk driver blasted through barricades. Tonight we are seeing

:08:38.:08:46.

the face of the alleged driver. Police say they believe it was an

:08:47.:08:51.

intentional act. The made in America team are back. Washington is taking

:08:52.:08:58.

the challenge to the Pentagon. Should American employees were shoes

:08:59.:09:04.

and clothes made in America to make we have a big decision coming. We

:09:05.:09:12.

heard this from our viewers, do American viewers make the American

:09:13.:09:18.

uniforms? A law requires it. There is one item that workers are hoping

:09:19.:09:27.

will soon be made in America. The uniform is made in America. To get

:09:28.:09:35.

into those uniforms, our troops, the to be fit. There is something afoot

:09:36.:09:41.

about their sneakers, the only part made overseas. Many wondering why

:09:42.:09:46.

the Federal government is spending millions of dollars on speakers made

:09:47.:09:51.

someplace else. Can we find sneakers made here? It did not take long. New

:09:52.:09:57.

balance are making speakers in America. If it says made in the USA,

:09:58.:10:04.

it means that. So the issue is loosening up? Ready for someone

:10:05.:10:10.

who's foot. All it needs now is the sole. If we can find them, what

:10:11.:10:17.

about Washington? The Pentagon tell us that the Department of defence

:10:18.:10:20.

has heard from several manufacturers saying they could produce a 100%

:10:21.:10:25.

American-made shoe. They added, we are evaluating the proposals. On

:10:26.:10:30.

Capitol Hill, some lawmakers say it is a no-brainer. I found a senator

:10:31.:10:37.

who told me about the labels on the sneakers. They are made in Vietnam,

:10:38.:10:44.

China, all over the world. She points out a 1941 law requires every

:10:45.:10:52.

part to be made in America. She says there is a loophole for sneakers. I

:10:53.:10:58.

have heard the conversation change in America. Fuelled by workers.

:10:59.:11:05.

Three new balance factories are sending a message. They have also

:11:06.:11:11.

sent us the prototype they have pitched to the Pentagon. Others shoe

:11:12.:11:21.

companies are also saying they can do it here. An ultraviolet pen,

:11:22.:11:33.

invisible ink, marking where the soul is glued to the Speaker. The

:11:34.:11:36.

customer will never know that I wrote this? Somebody soon wearing

:11:37.:11:44.

sneakers with those three words. You make and customers, will you make

:11:45.:11:50.

them for troops? I hope so. -- you make them for customers. We have had

:11:51.:11:57.

viewers send in photos. This is up to the Pentagon. They like what they

:11:58.:12:03.

are seeing with the proposal. We have been told that new balance

:12:04.:12:06.

would be able to hire at least 200 new workers if they get the job. We

:12:07.:12:13.

will be watching the decision. The next - drama in court. Oscar

:12:14.:12:20.

Pistorius's girlfriend. Never before seen photos of the crime scene. It

:12:21.:12:23.

had him hiding his eyes. Next, a powerful drama in the trial

:12:24.:13:06.

of Oscar Pistorius. For the first time, graphic photos of his

:13:07.:13:10.

girlfriend, killed by his gunfire. The athlete and the model, once a

:13:11.:13:15.

glamorous couple. Today, the man called Blade Runner covered his

:13:16.:13:24.

eyes. The world 's seas for the first time, that bloody scene. Oscar

:13:25.:13:30.

Pistorius's blood smeared legs. Blood pools in the bathroom floor.

:13:31.:13:35.

Last Valentine's Day, Oscar Pistorius killed his lover. He

:13:36.:13:41.

claims he thought she was an intruder. Now he faces a new

:13:42.:13:47.

barrages cameras, charged with premeditated murder. Today, when

:13:48.:13:53.

Reeva Steenkamp's face flashed on screen, he began heaving, covering

:13:54.:13:59.

his head. One of the first police on the scene testified. He took us

:14:00.:14:07.

through this high security wall, electrified fences, writing to Oscar

:14:08.:14:12.

Pistorius's house and a trail of blood. Slides showed the towels used

:14:13.:14:22.

to stop the blood. A downer, and a shattered door. It was

:14:23.:14:27.

reconstructed. When he realised he had killed Reeva Steenkamp, the

:14:28.:14:32.

story is that he put in his prosthetics to knock down the door.

:14:33.:14:36.

A forensics expert suggested he lied. The marks on the door are

:14:37.:14:42.

consistent with him not having his legs on. The prosecution has accused

:14:43.:14:49.

of lying, suggesting the death was anything but an accident.

:14:50.:14:55.

It is hard to believe it has been a year since they show a cardinal from

:14:56.:15:01.

Argentina walked onto the balcony as Pope Francis. He marked the

:15:02.:15:05.

anniversary with this post on Twitter. He also received an

:15:06.:15:10.

invitation from the U.S. Congress to address a joint session. If he says

:15:11.:15:15.

yes, it will be a first ever for a pub. Finally, what if you had the

:15:16.:15:21.

power to heal, like a doctor, with medicine. We have strangers saving

:15:22.:15:30.

fragile lives. The neonatal intensive care unit, full of

:15:31.:15:34.

machines, bells, safeguarding the most fragile lives. Babies like

:15:35.:15:39.

these, twins born three months premature. How reassuring is the

:15:40.:15:52.

sound of that voice? Oliver clings to it, and that is that his father,

:15:53.:16:00.

not even a nurse. He is a volunteer at a children's hospital. He and his

:16:01.:16:05.

wife have been cuddling babies here for 16 years. The nurses were

:16:06.:16:10.

telling me that this has an immediate impact for these babies.

:16:11.:16:14.

It is measurable. Look at this blue number. That is blood oxygenation.

:16:15.:16:21.

As it starts to climb, the babies are relaxing. This doctor says it

:16:22.:16:25.

leads to better tolerance of pain, more stable body tablature, and

:16:26.:16:33.

stronger vital signs. In your childhood, your mum's hard was the

:16:34.:16:37.

best medicine. For these children, it is. I cannot be here 24 hours a

:16:38.:16:45.

day. It is comforting knowing that while you were not here, there is

:16:46.:16:49.

somebody holding a child. These people are scared to death.

:16:50.:16:57.

High-tech medicine can make miracles happen. What a song and a smile,

:16:58.:17:08.

plus that human touch, that is what will make these babies America

:17:09.:17:16.

strong. The baby's parents tell us that they

:17:17.:17:22.

are home now and doing well. Thank you for watching. I will see you

:17:23.:17:25.

again tomorrow night. Familiar problems overnight into the

:17:26.:17:36.

morning. The fog is developing more widely. It is thickening

:17:37.:17:37.
