place currently in Canberra. Time now for a look at the news as seen

:00:00.:00:00.

across the US a couple of hours ago an ABC World News with Diane Sawyer.

:00:00.:00:15.

Welcome. Target Americans, three goodhearted Americans trying to help

:00:16.:00:20.

the sick killed in Afghanistan by the guard hired to protect them.

:00:21.:00:22.

Outbreak, a health alert about measles in this country. Surprising

:00:23.:00:28.

video, people walked right by the homeless on the street, not even

:00:29.:00:31.

noticing they are secretly their wives. Or, their uncles or family.

:00:32.:00:44.

Good evening. Even though we have heard a lot of news from

:00:45.:00:50.

Afghanistan, this story to note is different. The grief stretches to

:00:51.:00:52.

Chicago, three Americans killed as they were trying to heal the

:00:53.:00:58.

children of our country, raising the question, can any American, even a

:00:59.:01:02.

civilian, even a doctor, be safe that? `` tonight. One of the

:01:03.:01:07.

victim's Wise is sending a message. A surprising one for all of us. ``

:01:08.:01:16.

wives. Our correspondent tells us what this means for the US.

:01:17.:01:22.

Even in a nation accustomed to violence, this attack stands out for

:01:23.:01:28.

the brutality and heartbreak. This is an American doctor killed today.

:01:29.:01:36.

For more than seven years, he worked to save mothers and babies in

:01:37.:01:42.

Afghanistan. I am here with this doctor and he is from Chicago. Here

:01:43.:01:47.

he is two years ago, interviewed by a Christian station about his

:01:48.:01:49.

life`saving work. This baby has done remarkably well for how small it

:01:50.:01:55.

was. What are the child's chances in Kabul without a QR? Most of these

:01:56.:02:02.

kids here, they would be dead. The Philadelphia `based Christian

:02:03.:02:07.

organisation running the that includes 60 children with cleft

:02:08.:02:14.

pallet annually. Today, needy entrants to this hospital, he was

:02:15.:02:19.

gunned down as he greeted to other Americans, a father and son. As a

:02:20.:02:27.

security guard opened fire, killing them all. His wife, who also

:02:28.:02:32.

volunteered in Afghanistan, copy call along with her son early this

:02:33.:02:36.

morning at their home in Chicago. Our family has suffered a while our

:02:37.:02:41.

hearts are ageing, we are aching for the loss of the other families. As

:02:42.:02:49.

well as the loss and multiple losses that the Afghan people have

:02:50.:02:54.

suffered. Today is an attack of so many targeting Westerners recently

:02:55.:02:56.

the violence has understandably scared away eight organisations. At

:02:57.:03:01.

the widow of this doctor insisted the Afghani 's who need help should

:03:02.:03:11.

not be abandoned. `` aid. The others who were killed have not been

:03:12.:03:13.

identified. Today the cat comes in the face of America's drawdown. The

:03:14.:03:18.

government is trying to find how many to leave behind `` the attack.

:03:19.:03:25.

We moved to news about the US and Russia moving closer to the brink

:03:26.:03:29.

and President Obama losing patience with Vladimir Putin's actions in

:03:30.:03:35.

Ukraine. Russian launched military drills along the border and the US

:03:36.:03:41.

warned that new sanctions are being prepared. On another note, the

:03:42.:03:47.

American journalist held captive by insurgents has been released. Now,

:03:48.:03:50.

back into the new warning from the CDC about measles on the march in

:03:51.:03:53.

America. We are tracking a surge of cases, outbreaks in 13 states.

:03:54.:03:57.

California and New York are the hardest hit. The number of cases

:03:58.:04:01.

growing at a pace unseen in 20 years. How far and how fast can this

:04:02.:04:05.

go? Our correspondent breaks it down. Fever, aching eyes, hacking

:04:06.:04:16.

cough. And every square inch covered in a rush. Measles. Tonight, the CDC

:04:17.:04:22.

warns that its back and spreading. Even doctors don't recognise it.

:04:23.:04:26.

Most people in training have never seen measles. 129 cases this year,

:04:27.:04:33.

58 in California. This time last year, there were only four. The CDC

:04:34.:04:38.

says it's the highest number of cases since 1996. It is so

:04:39.:04:42.

contagious, we had to prepare a negative pressure rooms in the

:04:43.:04:48.

emergency room in San Diego. Behind the outbreak, unvaccinated

:04:49.:04:52.

travellers, ringing measles back after trips to the Philippines where

:04:53.:04:56.

there is an outbreak, and an increasing number of parents who

:04:57.:04:59.

refuse to vaccinate their children. We are up to 4.5% of our children in

:05:00.:05:06.

kindergarten who have not had all of their vaccines. Hilary Chambers with

:05:07.:05:12.

a baby exposed to measles has something to say to parents who

:05:13.:05:16.

refuse to vaccinate. That is not fair. You are relying on everybody

:05:17.:05:23.

else to do it for you. For many paediatricians, it's a hot button

:05:24.:05:27.

issue. Isn't it a parents right to vaccinate their child or not? If you

:05:28.:05:32.

send your teenager out to drive a car without wearing a seatbelt?

:05:33.:05:43.

There is a new battle out West tonight surrounding a rancher who

:05:44.:05:46.

has become an anti`government folk hero, a man who is winning a

:05:47.:05:50.

high`stakes showdown with Washington. Several politicians have

:05:51.:05:54.

rallied to his side, but tonight, they are backing away because of

:05:55.:05:57.

something he said about race in America.

:05:58.:06:06.

The rancher who grazed his cattle on federal land but refused 20 years to

:06:07.:06:10.

pay fees to the government stayed down US agents with a handful of

:06:11.:06:14.

supporters one week ago. But tonight, he is losing support as

:06:15.:06:19.

faster than the temperature rises in Nevada after his racist comments to

:06:20.:06:22.

reporters. I want to tell you one more thing I know about the Negroes

:06:23.:06:31.

will stop they put their young men in jail because they never learned

:06:32.:06:34.

how to pick cotton. They were better off in picking cotton... Today on a

:06:35.:06:43.

radio programme, he did not help himself much.

:06:44.:06:58.

Some Republicans lawmakers had also hailed him, including his home state

:06:59.:07:08.

Senator. Tonight, they are heading for the hills, now trying to

:07:09.:07:11.

distance themselves from him. He says his remarks on race ``

:07:12.:07:21.

tonight, the rancher has fewer friends and still owes the federal

:07:22.:07:28.

government more than $1 million. And a growing danger in the east

:07:29.:07:34.

tonight. Nine states from Delaware domain are at risk of wildfires.

:07:35.:07:40.

Today, New Jersey was hit. Flames closed in on several homes. Families

:07:41.:07:46.

were ordered to leave and a nearby school was evacuated. Firefighters

:07:47.:07:50.

say conditions in the state of New Jersey are so dry that one cigarette

:07:51.:07:55.

butt is enough to start a fire. And now a headline about something you

:07:56.:08:00.

may be seeing all around you. Health officials have proposed a crackdown

:08:01.:08:04.

on popular electronic cigarettes, saying they should be treated like

:08:05.:08:07.

the real thing, including a ban on sales to young people because of

:08:08.:08:10.

something that is happening around the country. They are touted by

:08:11.:08:16.

advertisers as a smart alternative to cigarettes. Celebrities have been

:08:17.:08:27.

photographed using electronic cigarettes, battery`powered devices

:08:28.:08:30.

filled with nicotine `based water. Sales are expected to pick $2

:08:31.:08:33.

billion this year. Tonight, regulators for the first time are

:08:34.:08:39.

cracking down. It's like the wild West in terms of what people are

:08:40.:08:44.

doing. The products are evolving. There is no regulatory oversight and

:08:45.:08:49.

they are being marketed in ways that are very worrisome. New rules would

:08:50.:08:55.

ban sales of electronic cigarettes to anyone under 18, require warning

:08:56.:08:59.

Wiggles `` require warning labels and force companies to get FDA

:09:00.:09:04.

approval before they marketed electronic cigarettes as a way to

:09:05.:09:08.

quit smoking. They say that electronic cigarettes are a

:09:09.:09:10.

technology product and not big tobacco product. Others want the

:09:11.:09:17.

advertisements reined in. There is no question that this industry has

:09:18.:09:22.

reached its tactics straight from the big tobacco playbook. Candy and

:09:23.:09:25.

fruit flavoured products aimed at children. The glamorisation of

:09:26.:09:30.

electronic cigarettes. Some of that marketing may look familiar. Look at

:09:31.:09:34.

the glamorous woman in the blue dress smoking a cigarette in 1930.

:09:35.:09:39.

And this woman today. The rugged cowboy then and now. And the

:09:40.:09:48.

adventurous girl then and now. But some people say that electronic

:09:49.:09:50.

cigarettes are a gamechanger for those trying to kick the habit. They

:09:51.:09:56.

are using electronic cigarettes to quick regular cigarettes. Yes. That

:09:57.:10:01.

is the number one reason. Both sides tonight awaiting for the smoke to

:10:02.:10:08.

clear. There was a poignant moment at the

:10:09.:10:13.

White House today. Michelle Obama sat down with children who have a

:10:14.:10:16.

family member working at the White House. Watch what happens when she

:10:17.:10:18.

calls on one little girl in front. Well, it's a little private, but she

:10:19.:10:33.

is doing something for her dad. Right? Got it. No word from the

:10:34.:10:39.

White House on what she plans for that resonate. `` that resume. And a

:10:40.:10:47.

photograph we are all passing around today. Look at it. It's not what it

:10:48.:10:52.

seems. A woman offers food to a man who appears to be homeless. In fact,

:10:53.:10:56.

he is Richard Gere in character, shooting a film. The groups that

:10:57.:11:01.

help the homeless say this picture is a way to open everyone's eyes to

:11:02.:11:04.

how invisible the homeless have become. One group filmed a kind of

:11:05.:11:10.

experiment. People walking by the homeless, not knowing that they were

:11:11.:11:13.

secretly members of their own family, relatives they love. This

:11:14.:11:23.

woman was filmed walking past a homeless person, something that

:11:24.:11:25.

happens thousands of times per day in America. But she did not realise

:11:26.:11:31.

the woman on the sidewalk was her own sister. This woman did not

:11:32.:11:35.

realise it was her uncle. This man had no idea the person he was

:11:36.:11:40.

walking past was his wife. It was all a set up to shine a spotlight on

:11:41.:11:44.

the homeless in a way we would never forget. This was how it worked. An

:11:45.:11:48.

advertisement had been placed announcing a film being made about

:11:49.:11:52.

New York, with the director looking for real people with real opinions

:11:53.:11:55.

on the place they call home. The idea was hatched by these two. They

:11:56.:12:00.

secretly contacted the relatives of those who answered the ad and

:12:01.:12:03.

arranged for them to be out here when their loved ones walked by. And

:12:04.:12:07.

so pharaonic passed right by her sister. And Thomas, married for over

:12:08.:12:14.

34 years, walked right past his wife. Each of them were shown the

:12:15.:12:29.

tape. Things are much more real than you expect. It is not the film's

:12:30.:12:34.

purpose to single them out. It is to say that we have become so used to

:12:35.:12:37.

seeing the homeless that we don't see them. The number of homeless in

:12:38.:12:41.

America has passed a 600,000 people. Every single person you see

:12:42.:12:47.

homeless on the street is somebody's mother, cousin, daughter.

:12:48.:12:53.

The film ends on an upbeat note. Each passerby, now informed, get

:12:54.:12:58.

another pass, another chance to do what they did not do the first time

:12:59.:13:05.

to see and connect. The daredevil styling of the highest

:13:06.:13:09.

building in the world. Can you guess the wild idea that ensured they

:13:10.:13:13.

would break the world record? That's coming up. A reminder that it is

:13:14.:13:56.

Beyonce's world and we just live in it. She is on the cover of Time

:13:57.:14:06.

magazine. And the reason for her top ranking... And a familiar face is

:14:07.:14:17.

getting a makeover. Ronald McDonald House. Here's clown suit is gone ``

:14:18.:14:33.

Isolde costume is gone. And watch while these two daredevils do

:14:34.:14:36.

something never done before, base jumping off the tallest building in

:14:37.:14:42.

the world. 2700 feet tall, the height of two Empire State Building.

:14:43.:14:47.

They decided to jump off a special platform to make the jump a little

:14:48.:14:50.

bit longer and worthy of a worthy record. Finally, there is a hospital

:14:51.:14:56.

in America where the healing person you meet may not be a doctor or a

:14:57.:15:02.

nurse but a welcoming stranger, making a connection with every

:15:03.:15:06.

patient and their family. A shining beacon of what is possible in so

:15:07.:15:20.

many lives. Come here and get your daily hearing hug. `` daily hearing

:15:21.:15:25.

hug. Everyone walking in, staring down cancer. 14 years, David. I'm

:15:26.:15:32.

still smiling. It goes far beyond the smile. He knows their names, the

:15:33.:15:39.

cancer, the family. I can sense it. I can sense but, you know what? I

:15:40.:15:46.

have seen some difficult cases turn around. I'm going to love you back

:15:47.:15:50.

to health whether you want it or not. It was a gift spotted in a

:15:51.:15:57.

little boy with a hint of a smile. Your grandmother told you when you

:15:58.:16:01.

were a little boy that you had a gift. I did not understand what she

:16:02.:16:06.

meant by that. She said, I don't tell this to everybody but I see

:16:07.:16:11.

this in you. But she told him was that he would one day gives people

:16:12.:16:14.

hope. This man was diagnosed with lung cancer one year ago. I remember

:16:15.:16:20.

the first time that I met him. He must have read something on my face.

:16:21.:16:25.

He said, you are going to be a cake. One year later, the scans are clear.

:16:26.:16:34.

`` you are going to be OK. The patients here all hope... You know

:16:35.:16:46.

his schedule? Yes. This day, they make it. And mix has heard the news

:16:47.:16:55.

about David. `` and Nicolas has heard the news about David. He

:16:56.:17:01.

admitted to me that he did not like hugging in the beginning. You have

:17:02.:17:05.

changed that. It is not just him. The letters from so many patients.

:17:06.:17:21.

Even the doctors depend on him. You know him as well? Definitely. This

:17:22.:17:34.

is one of the researchers. Through those glass doors tonight, he is

:17:35.:17:40.

cleaning up his desk, preparing for 13 more `` 1300 more hugs tomorrow.

:17:41.:17:45.

Thank you for watching.
