We will be back in 25 minutes time. Time now for a look at the news as | :00:00. | :00:00.
seen across the United States a couple of hours ago, in ABC World | :00:00. | :00:08.
News with Diane Sawyer. Welcome. Tonight, the end in sight | :00:09. | :00:14.
for America's longest war. What the president revealed about American | :00:15. | :00:17.
troops coming home. Warning signs from the gun man on the violent | :00:18. | :00:22.
rampage and we investigate the hidden culture that may have starred | :00:23. | :00:28.
his anger towards women. Run for it, the people behind this stunning | :00:29. | :00:32.
new video tell us what it is like to be trapped under a twister that | :00:33. | :00:36.
seems to get out a hole in this guy. Real money, our expert tells you how | :00:37. | :00:42.
to save on prescription drugs and doctors, as much as $3000 tonight. A | :00:43. | :00:55.
good evening to you as we return from the long weekend. We begin with | :00:56. | :00:59.
a history making music for the fighting forces in the nation's | :01:00. | :01:05.
longest war. Right now, there are 32,800 troops in Afghanistan but | :01:06. | :01:10.
today, President Obama told them that they were coming home. Over the | :01:11. | :01:16.
past years 2184 soldiers have died in Afghanistan but the families of | :01:17. | :01:21.
those still serving our counting the days until it is over. Now we go to | :01:22. | :01:28.
our correspondant who tells us that it will happen even faster than we | :01:29. | :01:36.
thought. Today, the president made it clear that America's longest war, | :01:37. | :01:42.
longer than Vietnam, and World War II will now come to an end. The | :01:43. | :01:47.
bottom line is that it is time to turn the page on a decade in which | :01:48. | :01:51.
so much of our foreign policy was focused on the war. With a price tag | :01:52. | :02:03.
of $538 billion, the battle began while the twin towers were still | :02:04. | :02:08.
smoldering. Today, there are more than 32,000 troops on the ground | :02:09. | :02:12.
that they will be rapidly produced 290 800 IP end of the year `` to | :02:13. | :02:28.
9800 by the end of the year. We have to recognise that Afghanistan will | :02:29. | :02:31.
not be a perfect place and it is not our response ability to make it one. | :02:32. | :02:36.
Or thousands of military families, their loved ones never came home but | :02:37. | :02:41.
for others this means more homecomings. Moments like this, just | :02:42. | :02:49.
last week. All of this after nearly 14 years of war which we saw | :02:50. | :02:56.
firsthand. What do you think about the mission in its entirety? We were | :02:57. | :03:02.
just trying to get back alive. In the end, the war would weaken | :03:03. | :03:07.
Al`Qaeda but would not destroy it completely. This final drawdown of | :03:08. | :03:12.
troops will likely move even faster than expected. More than 20,000 | :03:13. | :03:18.
happy homecomings are expected by the end about Tober and those who | :03:19. | :03:21.
will only be involved in training and counterterrorism operations `` | :03:22. | :03:31.
October. We move on now to be other developing story tonight. News about | :03:32. | :03:35.
the disturbed mind of the shooter in Santa Barbara. He was so young when | :03:36. | :03:43.
he first signs of trouble emerged as we are learning. Now we go to our | :03:44. | :03:50.
correspondant. The university tonight is shut down, classes | :03:51. | :03:53.
canceled and flags flying at half mast. A community grieving lives | :03:54. | :04:08.
lost, such as these ones. Still reeling from the rampage that lasted | :04:09. | :04:12.
ten minutes, stretching across this quiet Oceanside college town, 13 | :04:13. | :04:18.
people injured in all and six killed in the deadly plan of Elliot Rodgers | :04:19. | :04:26.
laid out in his manifesto. He e`mailed that twisted plot just | :04:27. | :04:30.
moments before the shooting began to mental health professionals and his | :04:31. | :04:33.
parents. His mother immediately checked her son's YouTube channel, | :04:34. | :04:44.
another haunting discovery. She and her husband raised to Santa Barbara | :04:45. | :04:48.
and called police, hearing reports of the rampage as they drove `` | :04:49. | :04:56.
raced, he is just one of many Americans suffering from mental | :04:57. | :05:01.
illness, the vast majority, nonviolent. So many questions about | :05:02. | :05:04.
whether anything could have been done to stop him. A family spokesman | :05:05. | :05:11.
told him that he had been in therapy since he was nine years old and that | :05:12. | :05:16.
his parents had done everything they could to help a shy and reclusive | :05:17. | :05:22.
son. Police went to his home but found no cause to search it or order | :05:23. | :05:27.
a mental evaluation. The law is intended to help those with mental | :05:28. | :05:30.
disorders but also to preserve the safety of the individual in the | :05:31. | :05:35.
community. Now this is a campus in warning, `` mourning. He also | :05:36. | :05:48.
stabbed his roommates to death with his parents writing a final, tearful | :05:49. | :05:57.
goodbye to their son. It doesn't make any sense. There is a steady | :05:58. | :06:03.
stream of students pouring into the stadium on campus, in just a matter | :06:04. | :06:09.
of minutes it will be filled with students. Among the speakers, the | :06:10. | :06:15.
father of one of the victims. I can tell you that the emotions out here | :06:16. | :06:19.
are extremely rocky. Students should be celebrating their finer weeks of | :06:20. | :06:28.
classes that instead they are here `` final. We are now learning more | :06:29. | :06:36.
about the shooter and his rants about being ignored by women which | :06:37. | :06:44.
reveal a subculture of anger and violence towards women in which this | :06:45. | :06:51.
young man took refuge. A worldwide outpouring in response to the | :06:52. | :06:54.
misogyny that this young man expressed. If I can't have you | :06:55. | :07:00.
girls, I will destroy you. Yes, all women feel threatened. Because every | :07:01. | :07:10.
single woman I know has a story about a man feeling entitled to | :07:11. | :07:15.
access her body. More than a million messages shining a light on a | :07:16. | :07:19.
culture that turns women into sex objects. Santa Barbara was not just | :07:20. | :07:26.
another skirmish in the war against women, it was the site of | :07:27. | :07:32.
terrorism. We will be staying on this story but next we turn to the | :07:33. | :07:37.
wild weather in the heartland. Twisters touching down and a video | :07:38. | :07:41.
that takes all of us inside the whirling winds. Our meteorologist is | :07:42. | :07:44.
tracking it all. of a tornado in North Dakota. I | :07:45. | :08:14.
could see a funnel cloud coming down. I knew it was not good. He and | :08:15. | :08:23.
his colleague ran for cover. I kept expecting to see animals flying by. | :08:24. | :08:29.
They kept driving but there is a brute was cut off. Let's look at | :08:30. | :08:33.
that again. You can see the debris flying by. There it is. When I have | :08:34. | :08:40.
been storm chasing, we see things like that flying miles outside of | :08:41. | :08:48.
the tornado. The camera captures the red dirt circulating beneath and the | :08:49. | :08:55.
bright light reflecting in the condensation of both. Terrifyingly | :08:56. | :09:00.
beautiful. The tornado dissipated but left this behind. At least nine | :09:01. | :09:12.
people were injured. Wind had been measured up to 120 mph. That tornado | :09:13. | :09:16.
was one of more than 140 severe weather reports from Texas to | :09:17. | :09:23.
Florida in the past 24 hours. I'm not a storm chaser. My wife informs | :09:24. | :09:34.
me I'm never going to be. LAUGHTER. And from North Dakota now to the | :09:35. | :09:39.
huge mudslide in Colorado. Today, rescuers called off their search for | :09:40. | :09:53.
three missing ranchers. Overseas tonight to Nigeria. News about the | :09:54. | :10:02.
kidnap schoolgirls. The top Nigerian military official says that the | :10:03. | :10:05.
government knows where the girls are being held but it is too dangerous | :10:06. | :10:10.
for a rescue mission. American officials are sceptical because they | :10:11. | :10:13.
cannot verify the claim. Now back at home, someone who is carefully | :10:14. | :10:21.
stayed out of the fray until now, Michelle Obama came out some ink | :10:22. | :10:27.
today `` swinging today about an issue close to her heart. A rare | :10:28. | :10:34.
sight. The first lady enters the fray. This is unacceptable. Not just | :10:35. | :10:41.
as first lady but as a mother. She is giving in, defending federal | :10:42. | :10:44.
standards to transform the old school lunch, she is Peter and | :10:45. | :10:49.
potatoes, into lunches like this. Spaghetti, vegetables and fruit. She | :10:50. | :10:56.
helped push the standards through. Now Republicans want to roll them | :10:57. | :11:01.
back. The last thing we can afford to do right now is my politics with | :11:02. | :11:08.
the health of our children. The processed foods industry says | :11:09. | :11:11.
healthier food is too expensive and schools complained most of it ends | :11:12. | :11:19.
up in the rubbish. But this San Diego School which abandoned junk | :11:20. | :11:23.
food long ago says it's the only way to get children to eat healthy. If | :11:24. | :11:27.
it's the only thing you offer, they will eat it. As for complaints about | :11:28. | :11:39.
school getting thrown out... The first lady says that is not | :11:40. | :11:43.
happening much any more because the healthy menus are beginning to catch | :11:44. | :11:48.
on. And every American family will have an opinion about this debate. | :11:49. | :11:53.
And about a former first lady who became a presidential candidate and | :11:54. | :11:58.
Secretary of State. Hillary Clinton has written a book that is due out | :11:59. | :12:05.
in June. Today, a glimpse of that book. And, on a lighter note, what | :12:06. | :12:12.
she thought about other book titles on the table. When I began writing | :12:13. | :12:17.
this book am I considered a number of titles. Helpfully, the Washington | :12:18. | :12:22.
Post asked its readers to send in suggestions. One proposed it takes a | :12:23. | :12:28.
world. One fitting sequel to it takes a village. My favourite was | :12:29. | :12:34.
the scrunchy chronicles. 112 countries and it's still all about | :12:35. | :12:40.
my hair. And my conversation with Hillary Clinton will air in a | :12:41. | :12:46.
one`hour special on the 9th of June. Coming up: A real money | :12:47. | :12:51.
investigation. Three ways to save lots of money on prescription drugs | :12:52. | :12:55.
and Doctor Bill. We save one family more than $3000. And tonight, | :12:56. | :13:02.
incredible ways dogs have been trying to help America's troops | :13:03. | :13:03.
returning home. Now, an investigation on how to save | :13:04. | :13:59.
money on prescription drugs and Doctor bills. The average American | :14:00. | :14:03.
spends $900 per year on medication alone. We have some simple ways to | :14:04. | :14:15.
save money. This woman is about to become a first`time mother. This is | :14:16. | :14:21.
the best sound in the world. But even before the baby arrives, some | :14:22. | :14:25.
bills have already been delivered. You have no idea how much this will | :14:26. | :14:31.
cost. Not really. We brought in our consumer advocate to help them | :14:32. | :14:36.
navigate through thousands of dollars in incoming charges. First, | :14:37. | :14:42.
different hospitals will charge different prices for the same | :14:43. | :14:50.
procedure. We found a range of $6,000 to $25,000 for her to deliver | :14:51. | :14:55.
her baby in her area. Shop around. Ask for the director of billing and | :14:56. | :15:01.
they will give you a quote. Second, just because your hospital is | :15:02. | :15:04.
covered does not mean that every doctor practising there is. Can you | :15:05. | :15:10.
please make sure the doctor quits in my chart anything that needs to be | :15:11. | :15:15.
approved by me because of coverage. `` includes in my chart. Make sure a | :15:16. | :15:20.
doctor under your plan sees you first. And make sure you are getting | :15:21. | :15:27.
the best deal on your medication. These prenatal vitamin C cost $104 | :15:28. | :15:37.
per month. `` vitamins. But similar vitamins cost $4 per month. You | :15:38. | :15:43.
cannot assume you're doctor knows what the coverages. You need to get | :15:44. | :15:47.
what is called a formulary sheet from your insurer. This way, the | :15:48. | :15:55.
doctor is not guessing. And you are not stuck with $100 per month. And | :15:56. | :16:01.
review the bill line by line. Many claims are denied because of tiny | :16:02. | :16:06.
errors like an old addressed. Insurance companies balance out | :16:07. | :16:08.
claims because things like this happen. Michelle found a $1200 | :16:09. | :16:13.
charge that should have been covered. Following this advice, | :16:14. | :16:19.
Sandy will save nearly $3500 on her delivery and can get back to | :16:20. | :16:22.
thinking about what is most important. Finally, we can show you | :16:23. | :16:28.
an irresistible force being called into action. Their mission is to | :16:29. | :16:32.
help American heroes returning home. Their magic touch is heating the | :16:33. | :16:44.
heart. On our way to search for a Lieutenant Colonel we have heard so | :16:45. | :16:48.
much about, who is doing wonders to convince soldiers home from the war | :16:49. | :16:51.
to come in and stick with counselling. Here she is. A | :16:52. | :16:57.
five`year`old German Shepherd. This is why she is good. She helps | :16:58. | :17:03.
warriors. The first time I killed someone, I cried. I thought it was | :17:04. | :17:10.
natural. After 72 is fighting the enemy, he is now fighting | :17:11. | :17:15.
post`traumatic distress disorder. `` seven tourists. It took military | :17:16. | :17:22.
dogs to get him past his pride and in the door. She has made a | :17:23. | :17:26.
difference. I can say anything and I can cry and you will not judge. | :17:27. | :17:32.
Today, there are 2500 dogs trained in the armed services but these are | :17:33. | :17:36.
the first use to help soldiers heal their minds. They get started as | :17:37. | :17:41.
puppies, learning to sense distress. These dogs are able to detect your | :17:42. | :17:50.
emotional state. This three`year`old brings soldiers tissues and comfort | :17:51. | :17:56.
stop the work is so important the military gives these dogs a rank. | :17:57. | :18:01.
This one is a general. It can get them through the hard stuff so they | :18:02. | :18:04.
can keep talking and work through their issues. Initially, you did not | :18:05. | :18:15.
believe that? No, of course not. But now, I will miss her. And we are so | :18:16. | :18:23.
glad you were with us tonight after this holiday. Thank you. | :18:24. | :18:43.
For the middle part of the week, we are expecting more rain. Sooner or | :18:44. | :18:51.
later, we will get some good weather. But for the time being, | :18:52. | :18:55.
used for Wednesday and Thursday, it looks like most of us will have to | :18:56. | :19:04.
have an umbrella with us. `` at least for Wednesday and | :19:05. | :19:05. |
