gathering dust on a departmental shelf. Time now for a look at the | :00:00. | :00:00.
news as seen across the United States a couple of hours ago in ABC | :00:00. | :00:11.
World News with Dianne Sawyer. A huge earthquake off the coast of | :00:12. | :00:15.
Alaska. Experts are watching for signs of a tsunami. In nationwide | :00:16. | :00:24.
sweep by the FBI releases nearly 200 children from traffickers. Tonight, | :00:25. | :00:29.
experts find stunning things buried inside your medical bills. How one | :00:30. | :00:45.
family saved $30,000. Good evening. We have breaking news from Alaska. A | :00:46. | :00:53.
powerful earthquake erupted off the coast of Alaska, triggering a | :00:54. | :00:57.
tsunami warning. Evacuations are under way on the islands off the | :00:58. | :01:05.
mainland. This is a significant earthquake and it carries with it a | :01:06. | :01:09.
tsunami warning. It struck just before one o'clock this afternoon, | :01:10. | :01:15.
local time, on and uninhabited island on the tip of that island | :01:16. | :01:20.
chain that stretches out towards Russia. We spoke with the city mayor | :01:21. | :01:27.
of a town just a few islands away from the epicentre. He said the | :01:28. | :01:31.
shaking was incredibly strong and that the water was receding from the | :01:32. | :01:35.
harbour. Because of the tsunami warning, people were looking for | :01:36. | :01:40.
higher ground and we had to cut short our conversation so he could | :01:41. | :01:44.
evacuate. We think of California as earthquake country but Alaska is | :01:45. | :01:49.
more seismically active. Half of the earthquakes that occur in the US | :01:50. | :01:59.
occur in Alaska. 1964, 9.2 on the Richter scale, one of the strongest | :02:00. | :02:04.
earthquakes ever in North American history. They are monitoring the | :02:05. | :02:10.
situation is far south as Oregon. Thank you. Now, a nationwide | :02:11. | :02:18.
crackdown on a problem that could reach into every community in this | :02:19. | :02:22.
country. The FBI moved in to rescue nearly 200 children in the US, most | :02:23. | :02:28.
of them girls, many enticed from their homes by sex traffickers. We | :02:29. | :02:35.
were with the investigators and captured the drama of that rescue. | :02:36. | :02:42.
This red light district is just one target on a nationwide crackdown | :02:43. | :02:46.
announced today, a place where prostitutes come to make their | :02:47. | :02:51.
money, many of them just girls. How young are we talking? The youngest I | :02:52. | :03:00.
have seen is 13. This undercover police officer is part of that sweep | :03:01. | :03:05.
and I'm here for the sting as the FBI and police try to rescue as many | :03:06. | :03:10.
goals as they can. Today, they announce that operation | :03:11. | :03:14.
cross`country but 281 alleged pimps behind bars and rescued 168 | :03:15. | :03:20.
prostitutes in more than 100 cities from Tampa to Denver to Los Angeles. | :03:21. | :03:28.
These are our children on our street corners, our truck stops, our | :03:29. | :03:33.
motels, our casinos. Some of them are runaways, many forced into | :03:34. | :03:39.
prostitution, Lloyd by boyfriends offering promises of love and | :03:40. | :03:47.
affection. I was 17 years old. He said he would take me all and we | :03:48. | :03:50.
would go to the shopping mall first. He wheedled me into it. I was | :03:51. | :03:56.
scared. Police on the streets say they often see a pattern. They come | :03:57. | :04:01.
from a broken background so if anyone shows them any common decency | :04:02. | :04:04.
or love, tells them that they love them, they believe them because they | :04:05. | :04:09.
have to believe them. As the night goes on, Oakland police bring in | :04:10. | :04:15.
woman after woman. This is the problem. There are more prostitutes | :04:16. | :04:21.
and temps on the streets than there are police officers who can arrest | :04:22. | :04:27.
them all. The underage girls go to juvenile hall, where police say they | :04:28. | :04:32.
will get help and most importantly forced time away from their pimps. | :04:33. | :04:42.
We go after their exploiters to prevent future victims from | :04:43. | :04:47.
occurring. One girl at a time. Many of these girls were not even | :04:48. | :04:51.
reported missing. Police say if it weren't for these operations, they | :04:52. | :04:56.
might not have been found. We know that girls rescued in the same | :04:57. | :04:59.
operation a few years ago are now in college, studying nursing. Police | :05:00. | :05:02.
say the key is to say the key is to get to the girls | :05:03. | :05:04.
and get them off the streets. A state of emergency caused with | :05:05. | :05:20.
severe floods. What than 13 million people watching the water and the | :05:21. | :05:26.
sky. Tonight, thousands are still without | :05:27. | :05:31.
power in Texas. Drenched with four inches of rain in just one hour. | :05:32. | :05:38.
Neighbourhoods submerged. All of that water even knocking this house | :05:39. | :05:43.
of its foundation. In the midwest, floodwaters are still rising after | :05:44. | :05:47.
two weeks of heavy rain. In Minnesota, 35 counties are in a | :05:48. | :05:52.
state of emergency. They saw funnel clouds today. A state trooper's bash | :05:53. | :06:01.
camera caught this mudslide. As the waters creep higher, bridges are | :06:02. | :06:05.
being closed before they go under water. You can see the water is so | :06:06. | :06:13.
high they have had to shut it down. If you want to get from here to | :06:14. | :06:16.
Wisconsin today, you are going to need a boat. This woman is watching | :06:17. | :06:23.
the water slowly invade her home. It started coming in this morning. Her | :06:24. | :06:30.
backyard is now a marina. You accept the fact that it is going to take | :06:31. | :06:37.
over from time to time. The raging river is making daredevil kayakers | :06:38. | :06:43.
happy. But the rescue teams nervous. Stay away from the water right now. | :06:44. | :06:48.
It is too aggressive. Rivers are cresting in some small towns. In | :06:49. | :06:52.
Saint Paul, these waters are expected to rise another three feet | :06:53. | :06:57.
by Thursday. Today we learned that the global | :06:58. | :07:01.
temperature last month was the warmest May on record in history. | :07:02. | :07:09.
The average temperature just shy of 60 degrees. And we now go to the | :07:10. | :07:16.
crisis in Iraq. The country is unravelling. Today the White House | :07:17. | :07:21.
is taking new place as they try to avoid the civil war. | :07:22. | :07:29.
John Kerry went to Baghdad today with a blunt warning for leaders, | :07:30. | :07:35.
telling them if they do not get their acts together and form a | :07:36. | :07:39.
united front right now with minority groups, the country could fall | :07:40. | :07:44.
apart. US officials believe the biggest problem right now is a | :07:45. | :07:49.
political, not military. The government is so unpopular with the | :07:50. | :07:54.
country's minorities that they are unwilling to join the fight against | :07:55. | :07:58.
the militants. The military situation is incredibly grim. One | :07:59. | :08:03.
out of every three divisions is deemed unable to fight. The air | :08:04. | :08:08.
force has only two aeroplanes capable of firing missiles. If that | :08:09. | :08:12.
is not bad enough, they are out of vessels. `` missiles. | :08:13. | :08:21.
Now the news back in this country tonight. A woman who told the Mormon | :08:22. | :08:29.
Church to give women a bigger role. She was excommunicated. She argued | :08:30. | :08:34.
women priests should be included. She was tried and sentenced with | :08:35. | :08:40.
apostasy. After being tried in absentia by an all`male panel, this | :08:41. | :08:44.
afternoon eight got the news she was dreading. | :08:45. | :08:49.
A lifelong excommunication. Punished for forming a group ordained women, | :08:50. | :08:55.
which seeks to allow women into the priesthood. The officials said: | :08:56. | :09:03.
thank you for being here today. Since forming the group, she has led | :09:04. | :09:10.
several protests, saying she found the group so that young girls would | :09:11. | :09:21.
not doubt they were. She can be readmitted to the group if she meets | :09:22. | :09:26.
several conditions after a year. She tells ABC News tonight that she is | :09:27. | :09:31.
devastated by the decision and a spokesperson says the group will | :09:32. | :09:37.
continue. Now, sometimes the heavens seem to | :09:38. | :09:43.
be watching over a child at risk. An eight`month`old baby abducted by a | :09:44. | :09:46.
car thief and abandoned by the side of the road. The girl had | :09:47. | :09:52.
disappeared without a trace until a jogger happens to run by. | :09:53. | :10:01.
It is a heartbreaking picture out of Houston. A car thief took off with | :10:02. | :10:05.
girl all by herself in the middle of girl all by herself in the middle of | :10:06. | :10:12.
the night in this empty field. Police had helicopters in the air, | :10:13. | :10:17.
searching the streets, setting out and amber alert. That is when the | :10:18. | :10:25.
mother ran inside with the baby in the back. Police say this man stole | :10:26. | :10:28.
the car and abandoned the child ten minutes away. | :10:29. | :10:34.
Genesis was still strapped in her seat in the middle of the bush is | :10:35. | :10:40.
for nearly seven hours when this woman decided to go jogging for the | :10:41. | :10:45.
first time in her life. I saw the baby moving in the car seat and | :10:46. | :10:52.
crying. The police used their uniforms as blankets. She was | :10:53. | :10:54.
uninjured and brought home safe and sound. Babies like to be swaddled. | :10:55. | :11:06.
Up next, real money. Outrageous medical bills and the stunning | :11:07. | :11:07.
things buried inside. Next tonight, we are back on the | :11:08. | :12:00.
Trail of outrageous medical bills. Medical bills are the number one | :12:01. | :12:03.
cause of personal bankruptcy in this country. We show you what happened | :12:04. | :12:09.
to one family putting thousands of dollars back in their pocket and how | :12:10. | :12:17.
you can do it too. His parents from San Antonio are | :12:18. | :12:23.
still sifting through a mountain of medical bills for his delivery. We | :12:24. | :12:32.
owe $150,000. `` $50,000. We brought in our healthcare consumer advocate | :12:33. | :12:38.
to try and cut down that bill. Step one, ask for an itemised bill. | :12:39. | :12:43.
Contest any service you do not remember getting. Get a comparison | :12:44. | :12:52.
shop, even after the fact. Call down the hospital and is the guy down the | :12:53. | :13:00.
street is charging less. They found out they were being charged four | :13:01. | :13:04.
times the national average for a C section delivery and were able to | :13:05. | :13:08.
negotiate a whopping $12,000 off their bills. To get extra savings | :13:09. | :13:12.
you might have missed, consider hiring a professional negotiator. | :13:13. | :13:18.
They keep 30% of whatever savings they get you. You keep the rest. We | :13:19. | :13:24.
are seeing some kind of charging 85% of your bill. Almost all of them. | :13:25. | :13:30.
They are using advanced computer programmes to find out billing | :13:31. | :13:37.
errors. They said he was a sick at delivery and needed special | :13:38. | :13:41.
attention. That was not the case. That is $17,000. They will even help | :13:42. | :13:49.
your family find special discount programmes. I have saved $18,000 | :13:50. | :14:00.
today. $18,000 so far. That is $30,000 in total. It stunned us all. | :14:01. | :14:08.
That is good news. What does this mean for your lives? It means we can | :14:09. | :14:17.
move on. Unbelievable. They fought back from | :14:18. | :14:25.
more than two years. Never give up. Even if you do not hire a help, | :14:26. | :14:29.
there are things you can do on your own. We have put | :14:30. | :14:36.
website. This is what you can do on your own. | :14:37. | :14:43.
Our instant index tonight starts with a piece of advice from someone | :14:44. | :14:47.
who knows a couple of things about sharks. A group of fishermen came | :14:48. | :14:51.
face to face with a 16 foot great white. Watched it snatched the bait | :14:52. | :15:03.
bag. It convinced them to leave. There is a certain number of great | :15:04. | :15:07.
whites along the east coast. A lot of people talking about a new role | :15:08. | :15:14.
for the family pet. Crawling coach. An extraordinary idea the dog had. | :15:15. | :15:21.
He is a loving companion to the baby, who was not making a lot of | :15:22. | :15:26.
tracks on her hands and knees until he kept slipping in front of her to | :15:27. | :15:31.
encourage her moving forward. We are told after a lot of tutoring by the | :15:32. | :15:36.
dog, she is now off and crawling. Finally tonight, the picture making | :15:37. | :15:46.
history. `` picture. The first major league pitcher to do something that | :15:47. | :15:50.
could light a revolution. It is something that could offer | :15:51. | :16:00.
protection from a street back. It is safe to 95 mph. Does it look odd? | :16:01. | :16:06.
Are they said the same thing when that in helmets became mandatorily | :16:07. | :16:10.
and the little ear recovering. Remember football, went from this to | :16:11. | :16:17.
this to this, because people kept getting heart. 2 million kids play | :16:18. | :16:27.
baseball. I hope they can use them. He may not go down in history as one | :16:28. | :16:32.
of baseball's greatest left`handers, but if the helmet catches on, he | :16:33. | :16:37.
will always have that footnote of having gotten their first. | :16:38. | :16:46.
We will always be here, Nightline later. | :16:47. | :16:56.
We saw some thunderstorms to end the day in the south of the UK | :16:57. | :17:04.
yesterday. But for many of us it is a decent sort of day. There is some | :17:05. | :17:06.
warmth and warmth and sunshine to be found. The | :17:07. | :17:09.
best is to be found in the south of the UK. Starting the day quite warm | :17:10. | :17:17.
here. In the far north, much fresher conditions. It will be filtering its | :17:18. | :17:18.
way south during the | :17:19. | :17:19. |
