Mike Embley is here in just under half an hour, but now it is time to | :00:00. | :00:00.
catch up with the news as seen across the US couple of hours ago, | :00:00. | :00:07.
in ABC World News with Diane Sawyer. Welcome to world news. Tonight, | :00:08. | :00:13.
sound and fury in the north`east. Storms so sudden and swift, seconds | :00:14. | :00:18.
make the difference. And, a child is killed at a summer camp. Rockets | :00:19. | :00:24.
fired by Hamas into the side of a nuclear power plant. How the | :00:25. | :00:28.
Israelis shot them down, with families running for cover on all | :00:29. | :00:34.
sides as our reporters are there. Something new for the family | :00:35. | :00:38.
vacation here at home. The biggest waterslide ever, and we take you for | :00:39. | :00:39.
a ride. Good evening. We begin with news | :00:40. | :00:55.
about the powerful storms that have been rising with such startling | :00:56. | :00:58.
speed and power people are racing to safety. Look and listen... That is | :00:59. | :01:05.
the sound and fury of the storm that killed five, including a young boy, | :01:06. | :01:09.
who walked off from his family at summer camp. A storm so swift, | :01:10. | :01:15.
seconds meant the difference between life and death, and we are tracking | :01:16. | :01:20.
it all right there on the radar. The storm system marching east. Our | :01:21. | :01:22.
meteorologist in a moment, but first, we are in the storm on right | :01:23. | :01:28.
now. Violent storms bearing down on the | :01:29. | :01:31.
north`east again tonight, this after pounding upstate New York with | :01:32. | :01:35.
blinding rain and deadly violent winds. At least six tornadoes across | :01:36. | :01:44.
states. Across New York tonight, as they pick up the pieces, and mourn | :01:45. | :01:48.
the loss of four. A mother and daughter dying when this home | :01:49. | :01:53.
collapsed, and here, a man and his dog died when his house was | :01:54. | :01:57.
literally carried into the air. So, this is the house that originally | :01:58. | :02:04.
was right there. It was lifted up, you can see some of the screens | :02:05. | :02:09.
there on that poll, and just carried right over onto another house. Have | :02:10. | :02:15.
you ever seen anything like that? I have never seen anything like that. | :02:16. | :02:19.
From west Virginia to Vermont, more than 300 severe weather reports. | :02:20. | :02:25.
Uprooting trees in Ohio, and at a summer camp in Maryland, more than | :02:26. | :02:31.
100 children, ages 7`12, were at an outside event and tried running | :02:32. | :02:35.
inside. The camp director so they try brushing more than 100 campers | :02:36. | :02:39.
to safety, but they were too late. It 12`year`old boy was killed by a | :02:40. | :02:43.
falling tree. Six more were injured. Tonight, they are reviewing safety | :02:44. | :02:48.
procedures. It looks like a tornado went through a small section of this | :02:49. | :02:54.
camp, right where the campers were. Falling trees are one of the big | :02:55. | :03:01.
killers in storms. Tonight, here in Smithfield, New York, families are | :03:02. | :03:05.
beginning to deal with this destruction and loss of life. What | :03:06. | :03:10.
makes this so much harder to look at, is that some homes are | :03:11. | :03:19.
completely untouched. It is happening again tonight, as | :03:20. | :03:23.
you alluded to earlier. Let me show you them up. I really want to focus | :03:24. | :03:30.
on the north`east, because anywhere from Virginia up three New | :03:31. | :03:38.
Hampshire, there are already warning is coming up on the map. When you | :03:39. | :03:43.
hear a warning it means it is already happening or it is imminent. | :03:44. | :03:50.
Are the new ways of getting those warnings? We have the oldest and | :03:51. | :03:53.
best way right here. That would be the radio, you can get these, they | :03:54. | :03:57.
are inexpensive and lifesaving. The other thing is wireless alerts that | :03:58. | :04:03.
are coming out. The government has come together, you will see a text | :04:04. | :04:07.
message pop up on your phone, and that is coming free of charge. Most | :04:08. | :04:12.
of us get those, some of us don't. If you don't, you can sign up with a | :04:13. | :04:16.
national weather service for others. Or, there are perhaps, either way | :04:17. | :04:25.
you have to take responsibility. Next, to the danger in the Middle | :04:26. | :04:29.
east. A moment everyone watched with concern, rockets launched directly | :04:30. | :04:35.
at a nuclear plant in Israel. The famous iron Dome tried to blast it | :04:36. | :04:43.
out of the sky, but both sides are caught in the crossfire. In Gaza, | :04:44. | :04:52.
and Israel, families huddling trying to keep safe. Hamish McDonald was | :04:53. | :04:56.
there. This wedding, just south of Tel | :04:57. | :05:01.
Aviv, is interrupted by sirens. We see the bride and groom running, | :05:02. | :05:06.
knowing they have one and a half minutes to find shelter. For | :05:07. | :05:12.
Israelis this is a well rehearsed response. This is usually an | :05:13. | :05:17.
underground parking Garrard, but if there is a strike, tens of thousands | :05:18. | :05:20.
of people can run down here. There is enough space for the entire | :05:21. | :05:25.
population of Tel Aviv to move underground. Today, three long`range | :05:26. | :05:31.
rockets were launched towards the sight of Israel's nuclear reactor. | :05:32. | :05:35.
The iron Dome defence system came into place. A successful strike | :05:36. | :05:42.
could have been catastrophic. New Hamas rockets are now capable of | :05:43. | :05:46.
population. They streaked across the population. They streaked across the | :05:47. | :05:50.
skyline tonight. Israel's PM promised those firing them would pay | :05:51. | :05:55.
a heavy price. 40,000 reservists have been called up as part of a | :05:56. | :05:59.
move towards a possible ground invasion of the strip. The divisions | :06:00. | :06:05.
between Israel and the Palestinians are wide, but geographic differences | :06:06. | :06:14.
are tiny. Rockets from Gaza fired at Tel Aviv travel just over 40 miles. | :06:15. | :06:20.
There is no question Israel has overwhelming military muscle when it | :06:21. | :06:23.
comes to taking on Hamas, but for the people of Gaza it is clear. A | :06:24. | :06:27.
simply do not have the same defence is that we have seen here. | :06:28. | :06:37.
Here, sometimes, there is a warning. We met a woman whose family's | :06:38. | :06:42.
3`storey home is now a pile of rubble. They told us they got a call | :06:43. | :06:47.
in the middle of the night from the Israeli military giving them ten | :06:48. | :06:50.
minutes to leave. They say a small rocket was fired in to make sure | :06:51. | :06:53.
they fled, then the next barrage completely levelled it. They are | :06:54. | :07:02.
innocent people, she told me. There are no militants here, being fired. | :07:03. | :07:07.
In Gaza, amid the ground shaking rooms of Israeli airstrikes, there | :07:08. | :07:10.
are no sirens, no shelters to run to. There is crying amid the | :07:11. | :07:15.
devastation that follows Israeli missiles. Here, five members of one | :07:16. | :07:21.
family killed when a militant leader was targeted. Ambulances tearing | :07:22. | :07:26.
into Gaza's hospitals, those sounds of war continuing leak into the | :07:27. | :07:32.
night. The death toll grows, with more than 60 killed so far. Only ten | :07:33. | :07:38.
were militants. That fuels the anger. | :07:39. | :07:53.
Mt Edward Snowden is back in the news. New documents claim he was | :07:54. | :08:07.
spied on. There is a new report that if naming names. This is the first | :08:08. | :08:12.
time that the names of people spied on by NSA were made public. First, a | :08:13. | :08:22.
prominent American Muslim who worked in the Department of Homeland | :08:23. | :08:24.
Security during the Bush administration. There is nothing in | :08:25. | :08:35.
my background, but I know that because I was a Muslim I was | :08:36. | :08:40.
surveilled. Names and e`mails were found on this document taken by | :08:41. | :08:45.
Edward Snowden and turned over to the journalist Glenn Greenwald. | :08:46. | :08:53.
These are prominent Americans that had no relationship with terrorism | :08:54. | :09:00.
or terror plots. The revelations came on the same day as | :09:01. | :09:03.
extraordinary diplomatic fireworks over spying with the United States | :09:04. | :09:09.
and Germany. It was on July four that the US said they had arrested a | :09:10. | :09:17.
31`year`old German security official who had been working for the NSA. | :09:18. | :09:21.
Then another German and who was working at the Ministry of | :09:22. | :09:36.
Defence was arrested. The former head of the CIA said that this kind | :09:37. | :09:54.
of spying is usual. As for spying on Muslim Americans, it has been said | :09:55. | :10:00.
that it was false that any US citizen was targeted because of | :10:01. | :10:08.
religion. Now more on the search of people heading to the United States | :10:09. | :10:19.
from Mexico. Tonight, President Barack Obama faced some of his | :10:20. | :10:25.
critics, including Rick Perry. Today, a former male was sentenced | :10:26. | :10:30.
to prison for ten years on corruption charges. Back at home, we | :10:31. | :10:40.
are keeping watch on the use of your taxpayer dollars. A report today | :10:41. | :10:46.
said that the Federal government doled out $100 billion to the wrong | :10:47. | :10:53.
people. They have been giving unemployment benefits to people with | :10:54. | :11:04.
jobs. Can you believe that there is an investigation into dog fur. We | :11:05. | :11:07.
are looking into your tax money tonight. Every year, Customs | :11:08. | :11:15.
officials have to write a specific report to Congress about dog and cat | :11:16. | :11:23.
fur. They are spending an estimated 10,000 dollars | :11:24. | :11:28.
off your tax money to keep the far out of clothing. The problem is, | :11:29. | :11:36.
there has only been one case of this. Still, a report to Congress. | :11:37. | :11:44.
He get some of these reports. How many of these do you actually read? | :11:45. | :11:58.
Virtually none. The problems have disappeared, any report, out of all | :11:59. | :12:04.
these reports, says that nearly one in ten could go. We have identified | :12:05. | :12:09.
over 350 that we think are netting value today and wasting taxpayer | :12:10. | :12:14.
money. This is slow`moving Washington, the house is ready to | :12:15. | :12:18.
get of 85 reports, saving $1 million. Warner says that he wants | :12:19. | :12:22.
more, he has not been able to get rid of any since 2010 when he began | :12:23. | :12:29.
calling for fewer reports. It is 2014, nothing has happened. It is a | :12:30. | :12:33.
job that tries your patience. We four years into it, we ought to do | :12:34. | :12:38.
better. Until they do better... Supply and demand. There is plenty | :12:39. | :12:41.
of reading material demanded by Congress that no one is reading. | :12:42. | :12:50.
Up next here, amusement parks are racing towards bigger and scary | :12:51. | :12:55.
rides, tonight, one of the wildest rides yet. And, superstar George | :12:56. | :13:00.
Clooney, the showdown, the apology winning the victory for his fiancee | :13:01. | :13:01.
and her family. Next tonight, a kind of daredevil | :13:02. | :13:53.
race under way in America's big theme parks, bigger, faster, scarier | :13:54. | :13:59.
new brides, tomorrow the world 's tallest waterslide opens higher than | :14:00. | :14:03.
the Statue of Liberty. But what do the crash tests show? And, what | :14:04. | :14:07.
happens when our correspondent is one of the first to take the plunge. | :14:08. | :14:14.
You could call it a waterslide... 168 feet of teeth chattering terror. | :14:15. | :14:21.
That is insane! The first bit was easy. 264 stairs. Higher than | :14:22. | :14:28.
Niagara Falls. It feels like I am about to fall off a cliff. I was | :14:29. | :14:32.
about to be the first civilian down a bright that has been a serial | :14:33. | :14:37.
killer of sandbags in test runs. It fell backwards, tipped over, and | :14:38. | :14:49.
killed everything. Its name is German for" insane" . It was over | :14:50. | :14:54.
budget, delayed by serious safety concerns. The minute we thought | :14:55. | :15:02.
there was a problem, we stopped. The park worked with local regulators to | :15:03. | :15:06.
tweak the incline, and installed a safety net. Enough talking, it's my | :15:07. | :15:15.
turn! It is a doomsday right in an amusement park arms race. Rides like | :15:16. | :15:21.
this one mean big money, 85 million guests at water parks alone in | :15:22. | :15:28.
2012. So many wondering if the fear businesses getting dangerous. The | :15:29. | :15:33.
rides designer says no. It is being built like a spaceship. It will be | :15:34. | :15:37.
tested, everything from impact to speed. A three second freefall, a | :15:38. | :15:46.
face full of water, and I am terrified, pleasantly. | :15:47. | :15:53.
The top of the instant index tonight, an invention straight out | :15:54. | :15:57.
of our dreams today, Nissan says that they have created the first | :15:58. | :16:03.
self`cleaning car. It is a kind of Teflon paint, so mud and dirt slides | :16:04. | :16:09.
right off, they say. From a car to a plane, this selfie at 30,000 feet | :16:10. | :16:14.
made headlines. A passenger with oxygen mask in place, snapping this | :16:15. | :16:18.
picture as his plane made an emergency landing. Nobody was hurt. | :16:19. | :16:25.
Now, ABC World News heard a report by the Italian police stopping | :16:26. | :16:31.
thousands of bottles of counterfeit Italian wine. The report included an | :16:32. | :16:37.
image of this highly regarded wine, we want to make it clear that we did | :16:38. | :16:45.
not intend to imply that any palazzo wines have been counterfeited. Now, | :16:46. | :16:50.
famous people, publicity and principle. Actor George Clooney said | :16:51. | :16:54.
that one of the world 's biggest newspapers owed his family and | :16:55. | :17:03.
fiancee and apology, and he won. George Clooney is no stranger to | :17:04. | :17:06.
life in the spotlight. Promoting movies on the red carpet, and | :17:07. | :17:10.
calling attention to humanitarian causes. But today, he drew a line, | :17:11. | :17:18.
writing that a laughable tabloid had entered into the arena of inciting | :17:19. | :17:22.
violence. When the Daily Mail, a British tabloid, published this | :17:23. | :17:28.
article about his fiancee. A very glamorous and very private | :17:29. | :17:30.
high`powered international lawyer and her family. The article claimed | :17:31. | :17:35.
that his soon`to`be mother`in`law opposed his engagement to her | :17:36. | :17:38.
daughter on religious grounds, but she didn't think George Clooney was | :17:39. | :17:43.
good enough for her. The gravity star then slammed the Daily Mail for | :17:44. | :17:46.
publishing the story, which George Clooney says is completely | :17:47. | :17:51.
fabricated and put his family and friends in harms way `` the Gravity | :17:52. | :17:56.
star. He says he respects freedom of speech Bob wrote the following. `` | :17:57. | :18:04.
speech, but broke the following. Today, a very rare apology. In an | :18:05. | :18:10.
e`mail to ABC News, a spokesman said the following. | :18:11. | :18:22.
While they say they plan to reach out to George Clooney to set the | :18:23. | :18:27.
record straight, it seems that he has already done that. | :18:28. | :18:34.
We thank you for watching, we always here at ABC News, and we will see | :18:35. | :18:44.
here tomorrow, have a good night. `` see you here tomorrow. | :18:45. | :18:50.
The wind is calming down a bit for today, | :18:51. | :18:52. |
