Tonight, deadly flash flood emergencies. Drivers trapped in

their cars in several cities. Neighbourhoods under water in the

east. In the west, a driver jumping onto a fire truck amid raging

waters. Breaking news from Iraq. US Marines and special forces land in

northern Iraq, where we have seen those refugees. What is the plan

tonight for US forces? And the detention and tear gas, the new

description from inside the police car in St Louis. What happened

moments before the unarmed teenager was shot? Good evening. Several

developing stories. We begin with the deadly flash flooding and state

of emergency tonight. Massive flooding hit so fast that drivers

were trapped. These images from Long Island, New York. Rescue joined

forces to help stranded vehicles out of the flood zone. Similar

conditions in Maryland. Highways around Baltimore were shut down. It

is not just the east. This is footage from Phoenix, a driver

jumping from his car to a fire truck to escape the rushing waters there.

The storm moved quickly up the east post over the last 24 hours. `` east

coast. We begin our coverage on Long Island, when a massive sinkhole has

opened. This is not what you would expect to see at a local shopping

mall, a sinkhole opening up after extreme flooding. So many people

have been affected. Flash flooding chaos across the north`east. In

Rhode Island, firefighters had to rescue this driver after water

inundated his vehicle. A state of emergency in New York. 13 inches of

rain in just hours, a new record. The weather caused a tractor trailer

to hit and killed a driver. Here, the flood waters are so intense that

cars were actually floating. Look at this one. The water picked it up and

slammed it against the railing. The house behind that railing was also

flooded. The house looks like an island. In New York, even the fire

chief was pumping out three feet of water from his basement. It has

never been this high before, not even during hurricane Sandy. In

Michigan, major roadways were closed. In Maryland, heavy rains

completely flooded the area. In North Carolina, flooding, power

outages, downed trees and rescues after severe storms. Flash flooding

was wreaking havoc in the west as well. In Phoenix, a man trapped on

the roof of his car. He was about to get washed away by the water.

Seconds to spare, he has only one choice: A leap of faith onto the

fire truck. The weather system flooding the east got its start in

the Midwest. This is what it did to a hospital in Nebraska. Nine feet of

water crashed through the windows. Thankfully, nobody was hurt.

Meanwhile, in Long Island, this sinkhole keeps growing. The workers

here will be cleaning up for quite some time. Thank you. OK. This storm

is not over yet. New Hampshire and Maine are feeling the brunt. This is

the accumulated rainfall map. Southern and central New Jersey got

eight inches. In Central Long Island, 13.3 inches. Only five miles

away, one inch. How do something like that happen? This is the

picture from early this morning. Heavy rains slipped right over the

central parts of Long Island. It is that low pressure system rotating

counterclockwise. The low`level jet in full effect. All of it combining

for a mass. That explains why neighbourhoods a few miles away did

not get any. In the west, we have flash flood warnings. And along that

cold front, they are worried about the wind warnings and the warnings

for lightning. And of course, nothing that will help those fires.

And tonight, that huge dust storm rolling through eastern Washington

State and Idaho over the last 24 hours. It is being powered by winds

up to 60 mph. Nobody was hurt but it made driving dangerous.

correspondent standing live. What is the plan for troops in Iraq? But

first, our correspondent is on the ground in northern Iraq. Tonight,

American troops off that mountain, after assessing the dire situation.

Refugees trapped, militants below. The same militants facing off with

Kurdish troops, known as the Peshmerga. We drove with them

through the sunbaked sand of northern Iraq, right into no man's

land. The brutal ISIS fighters just a few minutes away. This is the

frontline of the war against ISIS, just across the trench is a village

occupied by ISIS. How often are they shooting at you? They are shooting

us every night. Kurdish soldiers say American airstrikes have helped to

slow down the militants in their push to take over the country. They

have missiles, rockets, and tanks. We don't care. We will fight by

hand. At this rate they might have two, as we saw first hand. Can I see

this? So this is all you have? No body armour? No. Now preparing for

war, a rescue mission for refugees fearing for their lives, trapped by

the militants high on the mountain. A White House has not ruled out

deploying troops to help them get down to safety. With thousands of

ISIS fighters here on the ground, make no mistake. Getting those

refugees off that mountain and down to safety will be a dangerous

mission. I want to bring in our Chief global affairs correspondent.

You reported earlier that those US forces and marines had landed on

that mountain for a time today. The big question for people at home

tonight, what comes next? Officials I have been in touch with say they

are just waiting for the approval and they would be ready to go with a

rescue mission. So far of course, our contribution has been through a

power. The US launched more fight a jet of a carrier today. But in order

to rescue thousands of people who would almost certainly need boots on

the ground. `` you would need. And while the White House has insisted

over and over that US troops would not be put back into a combat role

in Iraq, this rescue mission would put them into enemy territory, and

they certainly could be sucked into combat if they came under fire. Our

correspondent live in our Washington bureau. We move on to the new

development near St Louis Missouri, after the police shooting of an

unarmed teenager. Police used tear gas for the third night in a row

overnight, this demonstrator throwing a canister back. Tensions

had been high all week long, the community demanding answers. And

this evening, what they are now revealing about the officer in that

car, his condition. Late this evening, protests continue down the

streets of Ferguson. They were demanding answers, into the police

shooting of an armed teenager. At the centre of this movement. The

police are scheduled to meet with the victim's family tomorrow. With

their threats coming in daily, police refused to identify the

murderer who gunned down Michael Brown, just to make days before he

should have started college. If it comes down to a lawsuit, police

promised to appeal the issue to the highest court. They argue there was

a fight at the scene and today told of the officer was injured in a

scuffle and had to be treated in hospital. His face was swollen. He

had been hit or punched or something like that. Tear gas has been filling

the air, and bullets are lighting up the night. Even shooting at police

helicopters. The FAA is so concerned they have issued a no`fly zone

covering the entire city. Today we met randomly, who says young people

clashing with police are not Ards, and this is civil disobedience. He

asked us to show these pictures of people clearing the streets. I

understand what these brothers are doing. Come on, just look on the

news. No jobs, so many people in prison. People are asked to protest

and much in daylight hours. But family said they should be allowed

to demonstrate whenever they like. And now to the political headlines

tonight. President Obama on vacation, and within tonight, former

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. A lot of focus on this meeting

because of comments she made about his foreign policy. They forged a

partnership in the White House, but is it cracking, as she prepares for

a run for president? Our correspondent live on the Vineyard.

They will be seeing each other late tonight, this right after Secretary

Clinton offered her most pointed criticism yet of President Obama's

foreign policy. She tried to smooth things over a short while ago at a

book signing. But look what happened when asked her about the specifics.

We have disagreements, and any friends and partners as we are might

very well have. But I'm proud to have served with him and for him,

and I'm looking forward to seeing him tonight. Do you think he is

handling the situation in Iraq right now... Would you be doing it

differently? I'm excited to be signing books. Secretary Clinton

said she would absolutely hug it out with President Obama when she sees

him at a private party tonight. But rest assured that if she runs for

president this will not be the last time that she finds herself at odds

with the President. Always fun when you show up at a book signing. The

like it. What is the decision? I don't know yet. She would decide

soon after that on`screen romance would become a real one. A

smouldering beauty from Hollywood's old age, Lauren Bacall was fiercely

independent, a little dangerous, and that voice was perhaps the most

powerful weapon. I like that. Except... Except for the beard. Why

his suicide this week. His son, Zachary, asking his fans to be as

generous as his father was `` Robin Williams. And Williams' second wife
