charging fees of up to 9000 pounds a year two years ago. Now on BBC News, | :00:00. | :00:00.
all the latest business news live from Singapore. Stealing on the high | :00:00. | :00:17.
seas. The growing problem of piracy in South East Asia, and what is | :00:18. | :00:23.
being done to try to stop it. At Apple unveils new technological | :00:24. | :00:29.
developments to take on competitors. Why are impressed investors | :00:30. | :00:37.
unimpressed? `` why are investors unimpressed? Welcome to the | :00:38. | :00:43.
programme. I'm Rico Hizon. Pirates have released an Indonesian`bound | :00:44. | :00:45.
Thailand tanker after stealing its entire cargo of oil, in the latest | :00:46. | :00:48.
attack by pirates in South`East Asian waters so far this year. There | :00:49. | :00:53.
have been 72 reported cases globally. More than 60 of them were | :00:54. | :00:59.
in Asia, mostly South East Asia. While many of the cases were minor, | :01:00. | :01:02.
last month, there were two more cases where pirates successfully | :01:03. | :01:12.
stole fuel. What does this mean for businesses relying on safe shipping | :01:13. | :01:20.
routes? I spoke to a representative from piracy combating organisation. | :01:21. | :01:27.
She says the rise in cases in the region is a concern. In the last two | :01:28. | :01:31.
months, there have been about three cases of cargo fuel being targeted. | :01:32. | :01:34.
And this has happened in the past. It is just that these past two | :01:35. | :01:38.
months, the cases have been happening quite close to each other. | :01:39. | :01:44.
It was the cargo fuel that was targeted. In this most recent | :01:45. | :01:47.
incident, the crew were safe after the pirates siphoned the fuel. Who | :01:48. | :01:50.
are behind these pirates? Is this individual opportunism? Is this | :01:51. | :01:55.
organised? There are indications suggesting that it is not an | :01:56. | :01:57.
opportunistic group that is involved. In a recent case last | :01:58. | :02:04.
month, the pirates actually left after siphoning the cargo fuel, | :02:05. | :02:06.
together with three crew members, who took their belongings and travel | :02:07. | :02:17.
documents with them. In that case, there is cause to suspect that | :02:18. | :02:20.
inside information was involved, and some kind of organisation has | :02:21. | :02:27.
occurred. Insider jobs, and syndicates working behind these | :02:28. | :02:35.
pirates. So how much of this is a threat to businesses in Asia, | :02:36. | :02:39.
particularly in South East Asia? The majority of the cases in South East | :02:40. | :02:50.
Asia are cases of petty theft. Less significant cases have occurred at | :02:51. | :02:52.
ports and anchorages. Cases of such siphoning are few, and the | :02:53. | :02:55.
authorities and the industry are working very closely to prevent such | :02:56. | :03:10.
cases from happening again. New data from mainland China shows growth in | :03:11. | :03:13.
the services sector rose to a six`month high in the month of May. | :03:14. | :03:19.
Services account for almost 43% of China's overall economy. This upbeat | :03:20. | :03:25.
news, comes just days after Beijing reported growth in the manufacturing | :03:26. | :03:28.
sector expanded at its fastest pace in five months. This will help allay | :03:29. | :03:31.
fears of a slowdown in the Chinese economy. Apple has taken on dropbox | :03:32. | :03:42.
and Whatsapp, at its annual conference for software developers. | :03:43. | :03:44.
It signalled a move into digital health, and unveiled an updated | :03:45. | :03:49.
mobile and desktop operating systems. But the developments failed | :03:50. | :03:56.
to excite investors, and shares fell slightly. So no new iPhone, but in | :03:57. | :04:05.
truth, the conference was always going to be focused on software. As | :04:06. | :04:08.
it has been for the past 35 years. At least, Apple have used this | :04:09. | :04:14.
occasion to dip their toes into new areas and highly. There is a health | :04:15. | :04:20.
app which promises to share data from all the third`party fitness | :04:21. | :04:23.
devices we have begun wearing. Potentially, even up until | :04:24. | :04:27.
physicians. The big unknown is whether they presage the | :04:28. | :04:32.
introduction of biometric wristwatch this year. Another welcome | :04:33. | :04:36.
introduction is the home kit, which ties up all the different devices | :04:37. | :04:41.
which we are now starting to see a peering in our homes. Connecting | :04:42. | :04:43.
thermostats, light bulbs, curtains, there is now a 1`stop repository for | :04:44. | :04:50.
all of these Apple devices to control these as well. As we | :04:51. | :04:53.
increasingly use multiple devices for our imputing experience, laptops | :04:54. | :05:00.
and, smartphones, and tablets, there was an increased emphasis on the | :05:01. | :05:04.
ability to streamline the experience between them and integrate the | :05:05. | :05:09.
experience. Here there were some genuine innovations, like the | :05:10. | :05:12.
ability to send and receive phone calls not just from a smartphone, | :05:13. | :05:17.
but from any nearby device. Other innovations were less impressive and | :05:18. | :05:21.
perhaps already familiar to users of rival companies like android. I | :05:22. | :05:28.
can't drive seems to be an attempt to take on dropbox. Apple will be | :05:29. | :05:31.
betting this painstaking attention to design and usability will give it | :05:32. | :05:35.
the edge over its rivals. Perhaps, it will buy Tim Cook much needed | :05:36. | :05:42.
time from investors and analysts still waiting for him to develop the | :05:43. | :05:47.
next big thing. Apple is not alone with its push to innovate. Global | :05:48. | :05:52.
sales hit an all`time low in the last year. They are racing to | :05:53. | :05:55.
develop the next big thing. As our correspondent found out when she | :05:56. | :06:00.
went along to Asia's diggers technology show in Taiwan. With a | :06:01. | :06:04.
futuristic touch, computer makers this year unveiled their latest | :06:05. | :06:07.
products. PC sales have declined sharply over the last few years and | :06:08. | :06:10.
computer makers have fought back by offering their own versions of | :06:11. | :06:12.
tablets, smartphones and so`called two`in`one devices. And they are | :06:13. | :06:21.
trying to anticipate your every need. This 3D motion sensor has just | :06:22. | :06:29.
captured me falling and sent an instant message to this smartphone. | :06:30. | :06:40.
There I am on the floor. The point of the technology is that if I were | :06:41. | :06:44.
to have an elderly parent living at home alone and she has just fallen | :06:45. | :06:47.
over, I would be instantly notified. This is one of an increasing number | :06:48. | :06:50.
of devices connected to the internet as part of a trend called the | :06:51. | :06:55.
internet of things. Computer makers are trying to catch on to this | :06:56. | :06:59.
trend. They are making products smarter, like this vacuum cleaner | :07:00. | :07:02.
you can command with your smartphone to clean while you are out of the | :07:03. | :07:05.
house, or wearable medical devices that measure your vital signs and | :07:06. | :07:08.
store the information online so you can share it with your doctor later, | :07:09. | :07:11.
or this camera that lets you see and record what is going on at home. | :07:12. | :07:20.
Industry leaders say there is much room for growth, as 85% of the | :07:21. | :07:24.
devices people use today are not connected. They expect that by 2020, | :07:25. | :07:32.
the number of products that are connected will skyrocket from 15 | :07:33. | :07:38.
billion to 50 billion. We also expect many industries to be | :07:39. | :07:40.
revolutionised based on computing being woven into the fabric of every | :07:41. | :07:49.
industry. A couple that we are really excited about are | :07:50. | :07:56.
transportation and healthcare. But not all computer makers are trying | :07:57. | :07:59.
to diversify. Dell is sticking to what it does best, desktops and | :08:00. | :08:02.
laptops. Analysts say PC sales will decline by only 1% this year | :08:03. | :08:09.
compared to 10% last year. Companies are trying to not just win back old | :08:10. | :08:12.
users but attract new ones. Whether or not they succeed remains to be | :08:13. | :08:33.
seen. An unprecedented global police operation has stopped a cyber`gang, | :08:34. | :08:35.
suspected of targeting 250,000 computers. Authorities have taken | :08:36. | :08:38.
control of a network of hijacked computers, thought to have been used | :08:39. | :08:41.
to steal personal and financial data from victims. Users have been warned | :08:42. | :08:45.
they have two weeks to protect themselves against a powerful | :08:46. | :08:56.
attack. The aviation industry has cut its global profit forecast for | :08:57. | :08:59.
2014. Airlines are expected to make profits of $18 billion this year, | :09:00. | :09:02.
down from $18.7 billion, which it had initially forecast. It is | :09:03. | :09:05.
believed economic prospects will improve as the year progresses. The | :09:06. | :09:15.
aviation industry has cut its global Tests by Malaysian authorities have | :09:16. | :09:24.
found that Cadbury products do not contain pork DNA, as previously | :09:25. | :09:26.
alleged. The Malaysian authorities say the boycott will only be lifted | :09:27. | :09:29.
if the allegations proved to be wrong. Once the darling of foreign | :09:30. | :09:36.
investment, Mongolia has seen a decline in foreign investments over | :09:37. | :09:42.
the last 18 months. Only three years ago, the Central Asian nation had a | :09:43. | :09:50.
health rate of 17.5%. That dropped to 11.7% last year. Foreign | :09:51. | :09:56.
investment fell more than 50%. In a bid to bring back investors, | :09:57. | :09:58.
Mongolia is looking to increase the area available for mining. It could | :09:59. | :10:04.
unlock $1 billion in development. I spoke to the chief executive of a | :10:05. | :10:09.
Canadian mining company. He says the move could help lure back | :10:10. | :10:17.
investors. There is a lot of mineral wealth hidden beneath the Gobi | :10:18. | :10:19.
Desert, and companies around the world want to access that. It is a | :10:20. | :10:28.
testament to just what sits underneath the Gobi Desert. And | :10:29. | :10:31.
opening that up to foreign and domestic investors will open that | :10:32. | :10:37.
up. It will unlock a lot of potential and generate investments. | :10:38. | :10:38.
