Now on BBC News all the latest business news live from Singapore. | :00:00. | :00:16.
New cutting-edge virtual reality headsets start shipping today. Is | :00:17. | :00:23.
that the future finally here or just the beginning. And we'll take a look | :00:24. | :00:28.
at mountains of food wasted every year and the smart bins that might | :00:29. | :00:39.
change that. Welcome to this Monday edition of Asia Business Report. | :00:40. | :00:46.
This morning will see the first ever delivery of consumer virtual reality | :00:47. | :00:51.
headset. The oculus rift has been long in the making and was initially | :00:52. | :00:55.
crowd funded but was then bought by the giant, Facebook. It is making | :00:56. | :01:04.
its way to 20 market. The gaming community is likely to be the first | :01:05. | :01:08.
target but the potential goes far beyond that. Will it take off. That | :01:09. | :01:16.
is the question I put to an expert. 3-D TV was supposed to be the next | :01:17. | :01:19.
thing and it never took off. There is a lot of risk but I think this | :01:20. | :01:27.
will do well in the gaming. But definitely Facebook would not have | :01:28. | :01:29.
bought it if they did not think it was going to be ubiquitous | :01:30. | :01:32.
communication. It is up against quite a lot of competition, so how | :01:33. | :01:40.
will it do? It will probably do very well. There are virtually arty -- | :01:41. | :01:53.
virtual reality headsets on the market. This is technology that goes | :01:54. | :02:01.
will be on the gaming community. There are specific industry | :02:02. | :02:07.
applications. Obviously, the big thing will be asked using it for | :02:08. | :02:11.
communication. And seeing though it is brand-new technology, most people | :02:12. | :02:15.
have not even heard of it apart from science fiction films, will it take | :02:16. | :02:20.
off? It will definitely take off because gamers will have one first. | :02:21. | :02:28.
It is such a big platform to promote it and I would be surprised if | :02:29. | :02:31.
people do not have one lying around the house. TV watching has moved and | :02:32. | :02:43.
it might move to immerse yourself in that world. In other business moves | :02:44. | :02:48.
at bailout deal the troubled Japanese and trucks giant has | :02:49. | :02:53.
finally been decided this morning. It has been a in talks with a | :02:54. | :03:00.
Taiwanese company. The deal is more than originally planned. US economic | :03:01. | :03:05.
growth slowed in the last three months of 2015 but not as sharply as | :03:06. | :03:12.
previously estimated. That is according to the latest statistics | :03:13. | :03:14.
show in consumer spending was strong. The world biggest economy | :03:15. | :03:19.
grew by 1.4% in the fourth quarter. We are a throwaway planet and study | :03:20. | :03:25.
suggest that 30 to 40% of what is grown in the United States ends up | :03:26. | :03:31.
rotting or thrown away in landfill. That is what hundreds A.D3 billion | :03:32. | :03:34.
pounds of food which is more than enough to feed the world 's hungry. | :03:35. | :03:42.
According to China it is creating more waste due to its large | :03:43. | :03:48.
population. So what more can be done? The waste we humans make. And | :03:49. | :03:56.
every day 13,000 tons of garbage from the citizens get dumped on | :03:57. | :04:07.
landfill site. It is not as bad as it was. The waste left has fallen | :04:08. | :04:12.
dramatically down from 35,000 tons a day. It is a third of what it was. | :04:13. | :04:19.
How has the city done it? Here is one of the heroes. This 68 old woman | :04:20. | :04:25.
who has cut the waste from food dramatically. She even dries up | :04:26. | :04:31.
potato peeling is so they weigh less and don't take up so much room | :04:32. | :04:37.
TRANSLATION: Reducing waste is as difficult as you might think. In the | :04:38. | :04:42.
past we were taxed a fixed rate to dump waste. Now I'm doing all I can. | :04:43. | :04:52.
There is a smart wastebin at a housing complex. It weighs the | :04:53. | :05:02.
waste. She identifies herself with a card and the card registers how much | :05:03. | :05:08.
waste she has left. At the end of the month, she and the other | :05:09. | :05:11.
residents get charged for the waste that they leave. The less waste, the | :05:12. | :05:17.
lower the bill. There is a monitoring of residence through | :05:18. | :05:22.
CCTV, but this system is really based on trust. And self interest. | :05:23. | :05:28.
Burlesque waste to leave, the more money you make. The city government | :05:29. | :05:35.
organises competitions to get waste down. The official in charge thinks | :05:36. | :05:39.
that the career and lifestyle generates a lot of waste. | :05:40. | :05:47.
TRANSLATION: Whether cooking at home for guests we prepare a lot of food | :05:48. | :05:51.
to show hospitality. That is why we also end up throwing up more food | :05:52. | :06:01.
than anyone else. It becomes useful and becomes transformed into a | :06:02. | :06:04.
sludge which is then dried and sent to farms as fertiliser. Waste not | :06:05. | :06:11.
want not all to be the country 's motto. We were joined earlier by an | :06:12. | :06:30.
expert. There two things it is the favour lost. And this is the | :06:31. | :06:37.
reduction in in reduced food because of transportation and waste that | :06:38. | :06:42.
happens from farm to the food plate. Waste is another issue and | :06:43. | :06:48.
that is the lost because of you and me. And that is likely a western | :06:49. | :06:57.
phenomenon. We're seeing that with respect to the waste. Many of our | :06:58. | :07:04.
countries are wanting to do something about it. Marathon running | :07:05. | :07:10.
has been popular for decades with large events that attract tens of | :07:11. | :07:14.
thousands of citizens in cities like London, New York and Boston. In | :07:15. | :07:19.
India, the sport has only just gathered steam in recent years. | :07:20. | :07:29.
Early morning on more by's most famous beach. Some of these runners | :07:30. | :07:34.
already have a fumaric funds under their belt. Others are still | :07:35. | :07:38.
training for their first long-distance run. This man is | :07:39. | :07:44.
having them get their. Is it the last one? He became a professional | :07:45. | :07:51.
coach 15 years ago but he has never seen business bigger place way it is | :07:52. | :07:56.
now. I would never have imagined this change that has taken place. We | :07:57. | :08:01.
never had people running but in the five years is that they come around | :08:02. | :08:07.
25,000. Most believe this culture of running in India was triggered by | :08:08. | :08:23.
the mourned by -- Mumbai Marathon. There are thousands of corporate | :08:24. | :08:26.
sponsors backing them. This run is only for women and it is in its | :08:27. | :08:36.
fifth year. We face challenges with long stretches of old road without | :08:37. | :08:40.
potholes and twists and turns or obstruction of traffic. That is one | :08:41. | :08:47.
area of challenge that we face. The other is in terms of getting the | :08:48. | :08:50.
number of permission. We are to get 16 or 17 licences to organise one | :08:51. | :08:56.
running event. Finding space to running Indian cities is perhaps the | :08:57. | :09:06.
biggest problem. When I rather I find pets is like this with things | :09:07. | :09:13.
done about. Then there is pollution which has become a big concern in | :09:14. | :09:17.
Indian cities. In Delhi it is sometimes so bad that doctors advise | :09:18. | :09:23.
against any outdoor exercise at all. Despite the odds stacked up against | :09:24. | :09:26.
them people are finding ways of getting around the obstacles in | :09:27. | :09:31.
their path. A feeling of, is meant and a means to keep fit, as social | :09:32. | :09:36.
activity. People run the different reason. For different reasons -- for | :09:37. | :09:48.
different reasons. They're keeping the industry running. Let us take a | :09:49. | :09:56.
look at the market. Of course most markets were shut for Easter on | :09:57. | :10:02.
Friday but we did see that data from the United States with the United | :10:03. | :10:07.
States GDP being revised higher to 1.4%. That is already having an | :10:08. | :10:22.
impact on markets here in Asia. The Nikkei is already stronger. And | :10:23. | :10:27.
we're watching the employment data from the United States and that is | :10:28. | :10:30.
meant to influence markets later on. That is it for our edition of the | :10:31. | :10:35.
Asia Business Report. Thank you for watching. | :10:36. | :10:44.
You are watching BBC News and let us bring you up to date with our main | :10:45. | :10:47.
stories. At least sixty nine people are | :10:48. | :10:48.
killed in a suicide attack in a crowded park in the Pakistani | :10:49. | :10:50.
city of Lahore. | :10:51. | :10:54. |
