The flying kangaroo takes off. Qantas posts record earnings | :00:14. | :00:22.
results. And clean your room. What is a chore to most people has turned | :00:23. | :00:26.
into a dream job for one lady from Shanghai. Good morning Asia, hello | :00:27. | :00:39.
world. Glad you could join us for this Thursday edition of Asia | :00:40. | :00:46.
Business Report. I am Rico Hizon. Australia's national carrier, | :00:47. | :00:49.
Qantas, has just posted record numbers. The national carrier saw | :00:50. | :00:55.
1.08 billion US dollars, that is nearly double last year's profit, | :00:56. | :00:59.
and for the first time in seven years that airline will pay a | :01:00. | :01:03.
dividend to shareholders. It is a huge turnaround from just a few | :01:04. | :01:07.
years ago when it posted record losses. He was a quick reminder of | :01:08. | :01:10.
its turbulent past few years -- here is a quick reminder. | :01:11. | :02:08.
For more on those record results I spoke with the editor-in-chief of | :02:09. | :02:16.
Airline Ratings .com. He joined us via webcam from Perth. They have had | :02:17. | :02:21.
a dramatic turnaround so is the sickening losses of a few years ago | :02:22. | :02:24.
and they have re- Jeet the whole airline with about 250 initiatives | :02:25. | :02:30.
which have come through to the bottom line -- rejigged. Permanent | :02:31. | :02:37.
savings of about $1.66 billion, plus of course they have hedged the fuel | :02:38. | :02:45.
the right way and have had a $640 million gain from that which they | :02:46. | :02:48.
have passed on in lower air fares and also passed on into the bottom | :02:49. | :02:53.
line as well. So they appear to have got the airline on the right flight | :02:54. | :02:59.
path, and increased the efficiency dramatically of the airline and got | :03:00. | :03:03.
rid of some of the legacy things that were dragging it down. So is it | :03:04. | :03:08.
fair to give full credit for these record numbers to chief executive | :03:09. | :03:16.
Alan Joyce? Look, I do believe it is. I mean, two or three years ago | :03:17. | :03:21.
the unions in Australia were calling for his head, and certainly the | :03:22. | :03:24.
airline was going through a lot of turbulence. At I think Alan would | :03:25. | :03:30.
say he was the messenger, the staff had suddenly believed the message. | :03:31. | :03:37.
He kept repeating that message of what they had to do, and slowly at | :03:38. | :03:41.
first and then with far greater momentum, the staff got on board to | :03:42. | :03:45.
the joyous message and turned their back on the union's hard-line -- | :03:46. | :03:52.
Alan Joyce message. And all of a sudden when you have 20,000 or | :03:53. | :03:56.
30,000 people working for you and not against you, the transformation | :03:57. | :04:03.
is dramatic. And this I think we'll go down as one of those Harvard | :04:04. | :04:07.
textbook cases of how to turn an airline around. A Chinese real | :04:08. | :04:13.
estate and airline conglomerate expects to seal $2 billion worth of | :04:14. | :04:19.
deals in the US this year according to its chairman. China's richest man | :04:20. | :04:25.
says his next target would be a major movie studio. He says the goal | :04:26. | :04:34.
is to bring the capability to China. TRANSLATION: Only six are real | :04:35. | :04:37.
global film companies, while the rest are not so if we are to build a | :04:38. | :04:44.
real movie empire this is a necessary step. There are two main | :04:45. | :04:46.
industries we are interested in, entertainment and athletics. To | :04:47. | :04:52.
merge and acquire and entertainment and athletics company are our main | :04:53. | :04:55.
objectives. If the target company fits our appetite there is no limit | :04:56. | :04:59.
to the Budget. Most of the money invested in China and even the | :05:00. | :05:03.
global film in industry is silly money. Only a little bit is smart | :05:04. | :05:07.
money. When investors see the industry getting hot they all swarm | :05:08. | :05:13.
around it. Wang Jianlin. The mining industry has been in a bit of a | :05:14. | :05:16.
slump this year due to slowing demand from China. BHP Billiton just | :05:17. | :05:22.
posted a big loss of more than $6 million, but it could be a different | :05:23. | :05:25.
story for their Swiss rival Glenn Corps. The commodities market has | :05:26. | :05:33.
business going beyond mining and metals -- Glencore. Earlier I spoke | :05:34. | :05:38.
with David Lennox, joining us via webcam from Sydney. With profit | :05:39. | :05:44.
between zero and 400 million, that compares the consensus of 430 | :05:45. | :05:49.
million and also a half-year result of 800 million for 2015. So overall | :05:50. | :05:53.
we do expect to see the direct mining operations actually | :05:54. | :05:58.
contributing zero results, and the agribusiness will, we believe, be | :05:59. | :06:04.
relatively profitable. These numbers, though, could have been | :06:05. | :06:08.
padded if Glencore had been able to unload over the past year its copper | :06:09. | :06:13.
mine asset in New South Wales and its goldmine in Kazakhstan. | :06:14. | :06:17.
Unfortunately they have been having a difficult time finding buyers. | :06:18. | :06:22.
Look, they have. Gold is actually a little bit of a surprise given that | :06:23. | :06:26.
we have seen that increase in the gold price. We thought that may have | :06:27. | :06:31.
attracted a buyer to that particular goldmine and of course, copper side | :06:32. | :06:34.
the price has really not done a lot. And we would expect to find it a bit | :06:35. | :06:42.
harder to come by. Overall, with those sales not being completed | :06:43. | :06:46.
inside the half we do expect to see the company's balance sheet remained | :06:47. | :06:49.
somewhat constrained through the reporting of results. David Lennox | :06:50. | :06:57.
in Sydney. Being a professional home organiser might not seem like the | :06:58. | :07:02.
most exciting job, but this woman describes her work is beautiful. She | :07:03. | :07:06.
left behind her top job as a lawyer in Shanghai to follow her dreams of | :07:07. | :07:11.
cleaning up people's homes, ridding them of hoarding tendencies and | :07:12. | :07:15.
helping them to create a calm and tranquil place. She tells us why at | :07:16. | :07:24.
home organising is her dream job. TRANSLATION: Home organising is | :07:25. | :07:27.
about balancing the relationship between people, things, and space. | :07:28. | :07:38.
It is about helping clients categorise their belongings, to give | :07:39. | :07:45.
them a clear mind and improve their quality of life. One day I walked | :07:46. | :07:50.
past my landlord's room. It was so messy that I wanted to jump in and | :07:51. | :07:55.
get his room cleaned right away. The quality of our life has improved a | :07:56. | :07:58.
lot over the years but for many their living space is still a mess. | :07:59. | :08:02.
So that is why I decided to become a home organiser. The Chinese are very | :08:03. | :08:14.
nostalgic. We collect all kinds of things. Stuff people love to record | :08:15. | :08:20.
our clothes which haven't been warned for a long time and many | :08:21. | :08:29.
unexpected things such as tea -- hoard are clothes. We advocate | :08:30. | :08:33.
thriftiness and many of us love to give gifts, which people find hard | :08:34. | :08:39.
to throw away or recycled. I think hoarding and collecting are two | :08:40. | :08:43.
different things. Hoarding his subconscious. -- is subconscious. | :08:44. | :08:52.
You don't consider the value of the things you collect, it is usually | :08:53. | :08:56.
the result of feeling insecure. Many families like having big furniture. | :08:57. | :09:02.
Even when their homes are small. Often their houses become very | :09:03. | :09:07.
cramped. Before they come to realise that the value of space is higher | :09:08. | :09:14.
than the value of things. My job is to inspire people to tidy up. My | :09:15. | :09:20.
goal is to gather all home organiser is in China and start a real | :09:21. | :09:24.
industry here, that involves more people who are passionate. A very | :09:25. | :09:39.
interesting dream job there. And before we go, here is a look now at | :09:40. | :09:45.
the regional markets and Asia is currently getting a lift. As you can | :09:46. | :09:52.
see the Nikkei 225 up by 140 points and the All Ordinaries gaining about | :09:53. | :09:56.
seven points this hour, this is after the US posted modest gains | :09:57. | :09:59.
overnight led by the home building sector following a big jump in the | :10:00. | :10:02.
sales of new homes last month. The Dow gained 18 point and the NASDAQ | :10:03. | :10:08.
in positive territory by 15.5 points. Let's have a quick look at | :10:09. | :10:13.
the currency markets, and the dollar sliding against the Japanese yen as | :10:14. | :10:17.
investors await a key speech on Friday at the Fed chairman, Janet | :10:18. | :10:28.
Yellen. The dollar yen rate at 100.40 five. Thank you for investing | :10:29. | :10:35.
your time with us. I am Rico Hizon. Sport Today is up next. | :10:36. | :10:40. |
