dollars' worth of contracts for
American companies but could he | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
sealed a deal with China? --
President Trump. And the numbers | 0:00:26 | 0:00:30
don't like, wearable technology
telling sports coach is how hard | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
their teams are working. Welcomed
Asia Business Report. I am Sharanjit | 0:00:33 | 0:00:45
Leyl. It's been a world wind --a
whirlwind tour of Asia for President | 0:00:45 | 0:00:50
Donald Trump, a difficult task to
reassure America's allies in the | 0:00:50 | 0:00:55
region, persuade China to pressure
North Korea and demonstrate the US | 0:00:55 | 0:01:00
is still willing to do business with
Asia. I spoke to Ian Bremner earlier | 0:01:00 | 0:01:11
and asked how successful his being.
It was moving forward with the | 0:01:11 | 0:01:16
Trans-Pacific Partnership, the TPP
11, which does not involve the | 0:01:16 | 0:01:20
United States. Trump did get a
number of headline bilateral | 0:01:20 | 0:01:24
investment deals signed, some of
which are new, some not. Not | 0:01:24 | 0:01:30
unusual, a lot of presidents do
that. China, Trump has said, and I | 0:01:30 | 0:01:35
think this is a victory, he's gotten
the Chinese to do more in punishing | 0:01:35 | 0:01:39
the North Koreans are a number of
things they have done to upset the | 0:01:39 | 0:01:43
need -- the international community,
nuclear missiles, the Chinese | 0:01:43 | 0:01:48
supporting Trump and the Chinese are
upset with Kim Jong-un but in terms | 0:01:48 | 0:01:52
of access of American corporations
to the Chinese market, intellectual | 0:01:52 | 0:01:57
property being stolen and technology
transfers, most importantly what the | 0:01:57 | 0:02:01
Chinese are doing in IT and
technology, the Americans are | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
getting nothing of what they want
and certainly in terms the trade | 0:02:04 | 0:02:08
deficit. No movement. We know there
has been billions of dollars of | 0:02:08 | 0:02:15
deals announced. What that goes some
way to plucking that huge trade | 0:02:15 | 0:02:19
deficit? Not really. These ideals
which are going to play out in | 0:02:19 | 0:02:25
headline numbers which are great.
Some of them need to actually get | 0:02:25 | 0:02:30
implemented. We see the final
numbers usually are not. They | 0:02:30 | 0:02:34
initially announced. That's not
unusual for Trump. It happens all | 0:02:34 | 0:02:39
the time with presidential visits.
Under mentally, the importance of | 0:02:39 | 0:02:43
trade architecture being driven
everywhere but the United States is | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
much more impactful on things like
trade deficits that any one-off | 0:02:46 | 0:02:51
deals. Would you agree that Trump's
America first policy is essentially, | 0:02:51 | 0:03:00
by nature, protectionist? Is turning
his back free trade? It's | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
interesting. I would say more
economic nationalists. He wants a | 0:03:03 | 0:03:11
bilateral trade deal which is more
attractive for the Americans. Shinzo | 0:03:11 | 0:03:15
Abe is one of Trump's best friends,
if not best friend internationally, | 0:03:15 | 0:03:21
and said absolutely not. That tells
you a lot of what you need to know. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:30
That was Ian Bremmer talking about
those deals. Max Morrison is here | 0:03:30 | 0:03:34
with a more detailed look. You heard
him saying that the headline numbers | 0:03:34 | 0:03:38
are good. Donald Trump fancies
himself as the dealmaker in chief. | 0:03:38 | 0:03:45
The headline figure is quite
significant. The lion's share coming | 0:03:45 | 0:03:49
from China including some blue-chip
names like Boeing and Qualcomm. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:57
Japan and Vietnam's and South Korea. | 0:03:57 | 0:04:00
Japan and Vietnam's and South Korea.
The Philippines is work in progress. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:04
They have made promises, no hard
deals coming through. It is | 0:04:04 | 0:04:08
business. The men around of
understanding. Deals down the road, | 0:04:08 | 0:04:15
not legally binding. These things
don't happen overnight. They take | 0:04:15 | 0:04:20
legal groundwork. If you look at one
particular sector, and that is | 0:04:20 | 0:04:24
energy. Major deals were announced.
The biggest of them, $43 billion | 0:04:24 | 0:04:30
into Alaska and if confirmed, it is
significant because given all the | 0:04:30 | 0:04:35
political concerns over Chinese
companies investing in America, that | 0:04:35 | 0:04:38
such a deal would go through. An
analyst I spoke to earlier said a | 0:04:38 | 0:04:43
lot of this was for perception. Good
politics, we will see if it's good | 0:04:43 | 0:04:51
business. Of course. We know with
Donald Trump, is America first | 0:04:51 | 0:04:56
polity is geared towards bringing
jobs back to America. Are any of | 0:04:56 | 0:05:01
these | 0:05:01 | 0:05:02 | |
jobs back to America. Are any of
these deals going to achieve that? | 0:05:02 | 0:05:03
Jobs, absolutely. He loves to say
bringing jobs back to America. That | 0:05:03 | 0:05:08
Alaska project we were talking
about, up to 12,000. But the energy | 0:05:08 | 0:05:13
analyst I spoke to say there has
dashed those were American | 0:05:13 | 0:05:19
construction jobs, 4-5 years, laying
cement and welding and steel, they | 0:05:19 | 0:05:24
are not long-term jobs. Again,
perceptions, look at all these jobs. | 0:05:24 | 0:05:30
Long-term, not as much. You
mentioned Qualcomm. They are in the | 0:05:30 | 0:05:36
news because they have turned down a
$130 billion bid and this could set | 0:05:36 | 0:05:42
the stage for a bitter fight in the
world of mobile technology. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:52
Singapore-based Broadcom made the
offer at the chief of Qualcomm says | 0:05:52 | 0:05:59
it undervalues the company. Shares
in Barbie toymaker Mattel had jumped | 0:05:59 | 0:06:08
over rumours of a takeover by
Hasbro. Last month, shares in both | 0:06:08 | 0:06:21
Dell after the bankruptcy of Toys R
Us. And but Coyne has bounced back | 0:06:21 | 0:06:26
after losing more than a third of
its value in three days. -- ??MACRO1 | 0:06:26 | 0:06:34
or two. A planned soft -- Bitcoin. A
planned software upgrade provided | 0:06:34 | 0:06:43
issues. Australia's business
confidence surged to its highest | 0:06:43 | 0:06:49
record October, with strength of
sales and profits seen across a | 0:06:49 | 0:06:55
range of industries. The National
Australia Bank survey showed its | 0:06:55 | 0:06:58
index of business quadrupled in the
long-run average however this is in | 0:06:58 | 0:07:02
stark contrast to the mood of
consumers who are greatly concerned | 0:07:02 | 0:07:06
about rising utility costs. In the
world of professional sport, elite | 0:07:06 | 0:07:14
athletes and their coaches know that
even the smallest difference can | 0:07:14 | 0:07:17
actually translate into a
significant advantage and a | 0:07:17 | 0:07:21
little-known Australian company is
scoring big, designing a new way for | 0:07:21 | 0:07:25
coaches to train their teams by
using wearable devices. We look at | 0:07:25 | 0:07:31
how technology and sports is
changing the game. | 0:07:31 | 0:07:38
In again, in again. Be patient, be
patient. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:45
With these things, what we could not
do before, if there is a low | 0:08:03 | 0:08:09
intensity of training and you come
to him after and you say, look, you | 0:08:09 | 0:08:12
have to push again, it is coming,
you are not doing anything. Today, | 0:08:12 | 0:08:16
nobody can hide any more. That it is
a game-changer for sports, | 0:08:16 | 0:08:39
especially elite sports. Technology
has given a new dimensional to the | 0:08:39 | 0:08:42
world of football. They capture the
signals of the GPS or the American | 0:08:42 | 0:08:57
and Russian satellites and from
there, they capture all the | 0:08:57 | 0:09:00
movements of the players on the
pitch. Crunching numbers, it is very | 0:09:00 | 0:09:21
small. And this shows how high the
play was working. You don't | 0:09:21 | 0:09:25
necessarily want to look at the
distance. Another player runs from A | 0:09:25 | 0:09:30
to B, 50 metres, might sprint, jump,
jog, and they calculate that. | 0:09:30 | 0:09:44
Staying with sport, the first time
in 60 years, Italy has been | 0:09:44 | 0:09:49
eliminated from the football World
Cup finals next year in Russia. The | 0:09:49 | 0:09:54
Italian team who were four times
winners of the World Cup and you can | 0:09:54 | 0:09:58
see them here trading, they were
held to a 0-0 draw by Sweden in the | 0:09:58 | 0:10:04
play-offs. But have a quick look at
the markets. | 0:10:04 | 0:10:20
We are also expecting retail sales
number later in the day from the US. | 0:10:26 | 0:10:30
And that is it for | 0:10:30 | 0:10:31 |
