Working on a fix. Intel tackles a

that could impact the security of
operating systems worldwide. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:31

I's goal for 2018. -- Spotify's | 0:00:31 | 0:00:42
goal. Glad you could join us for
this Thursday edition of Asia | 0:00:42 | 0:00:50
Business Report. We start off with
technology and its use in every | 0:00:50 | 0:00:56
modern computing device that you and
I used. I am talking about these | 0:00:56 | 0:01:00
microchips from Intel. Advanced
microchip devices. It has been | 0:01:00 | 0:01:06
reported that there is a serious
flaw which could let hackers steal | 0:01:06 | 0:01:14
data unless you update the operating
systems for your computer 's. I'm | 0:01:14 | 0:01:18
joined now by my colleague. What is
the problem? When you read that news | 0:01:18 | 0:01:22
it is quite worrying. I called on
behalf of you to find out exactly | 0:01:22 | 0:01:31
what is wrong and to find out they
don't know which chip is affected | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
and what device. It has been
revealed that Intel knew about this | 0:01:34 | 0:01:40
a while ago and they were going
to... They have been working on a | 0:01:40 | 0:01:45
fix and would announce it next week
along with other industry years. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:50
They insist it is not just Intel but
others as well. They have been | 0:01:50 | 0:01:59
working on a fix and they say it is
not a design flaw did it all it | 0:01:59 | 0:02:03
takes is a system update. There have
been reports that the update may | 0:02:03 | 0:02:09
slow your computer down and Intel
denies that. There has been a PR | 0:02:09 | 0:02:13
nightmare, regardless of what the
details are, the advice from experts | 0:02:13 | 0:02:20
is that as soon as the update is
released next week, update all your | 0:02:20 | 0:02:24
computers so you are not vulnerable.
Oh, my goodness. So many people | 0:02:24 | 0:02:29
affected. Staying with the US and
music streaming company Spotify | 0:02:29 | 0:02:37
appears to be finally listing its
shares on the York stock exchange -- | 0:02:37 | 0:02:42
New York Stock Exchange. Spot fires
the world's biggest music streaming | 0:02:42 | 0:02:48
company ahead of rivals like Amazon
and apple. Four months there have | 0:02:48 | 0:02:55
been rumours about its aspirations
to go public. Founded in Sweden, the | 0:02:55 | 0:02:59
firm has over 140 million active
users but it has continued to report | 0:02:59 | 0:03:05
losses. The Road ahead for the music
streaming service seems a little | 0:03:05 | 0:03:11
clearer. Although Spotify has
declined to comment, reports suggest | 0:03:11 | 0:03:15
it wishes to start trading on the
first three months of this year. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:19
Spotify is taking an unusual route,
selling shares directly to market | 0:03:19 | 0:03:24
rather than using an investment bank
to underwrite the shares. That could | 0:03:24 | 0:03:31
mean choppy beginnings for the
company as it may take a while for | 0:03:31 | 0:03:36
Spotify to find its value. The
timing is unfortunate as Spotify has | 0:03:36 | 0:03:40
been slapped with a $1.6 billion
lawsuit for infringing on some legal | 0:03:40 | 0:03:46
rights. The British International
trade Secretary, on a visit to Hong | 0:03:46 | 0:03:55
Kong has confirmed that China, the
second largest economy in the world, | 0:03:55 | 0:03:58
is likely to be one of the early
candidates with which the UK can | 0:03:58 | 0:04:02
strike a new free trade deal after
Brexit. He said the US, New Zealand | 0:04:02 | 0:04:11
and Australia remain at the top of
the list for the UK. Were about the | 0:04:11 | 0:04:17
likelihood of the UK part of the TPP
we don't yet know what the success | 0:04:17 | 0:04:24
of the TPP will look like. It is not
even been negotiated yet. Clearly | 0:04:24 | 0:04:29
the UK would be foolish to rule
anything out at the present time, | 0:04:29 | 0:04:33
not knowing what the future pattern
of global trade will look like when | 0:04:33 | 0:04:37
we leave the European Union and when
we finish our transitional period. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:41
Let's keep our options open, that is
safe. The UK and the TPP... Could | 0:04:41 | 0:04:49
trade partner should be on the
cards? It could be the next best | 0:04:49 | 0:04:55
option. If you can manage it, the UK
has a problem. It is giving up the | 0:04:55 | 0:05:02
biggest trading area in the world
and does not have anything else. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
Would this be the next best trading
partner? If they could get in the | 0:05:05 | 0:05:13
door this would be the next option.
The problem is that the TPP is not | 0:05:13 | 0:05:17
signed and it would take probably
five years, even if the 11 members | 0:05:17 | 0:05:22
wanted to have Britain, it would
take a long time with a lot of | 0:05:22 | 0:05:26
barriers. Theoretically, if the UK
becomes part of the TPP there is a | 0:05:26 | 0:05:31
potential upside because according
to the numbers, all the 11 TPP | 0:05:31 | 0:05:35
countries combined account for less
than 8% of the UK's export market | 0:05:35 | 0:05:40
with Japan accounting for just 1.6%.
There is no huge upside for Britain. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:45
It is much smaller than the European
free trade area but it may not be a | 0:05:45 | 0:05:50
bad idea. The idea is that the TPP
would get bigger. Career, Colombia, | 0:05:50 | 0:05:56
they want America back as well.
After this agreement is signed with | 0:05:56 | 0:06:01
the 11 members it is meant to grow.
It is not a long shot for Britain | 0:06:01 | 0:06:05
but it is not entirely ridiculous
that it may work. If you are hoping | 0:06:05 | 0:06:10
for a big pay rise you may be in
luck. Consulting company Mercer | 0:06:10 | 0:06:14
thinks salaries for much of Asia
will rise this year and many of the | 0:06:14 | 0:06:18
gains may come from the most
unexpected places. India, Thailand, | 0:06:18 | 0:06:27
Philippines, Indonesia, these are
the countries where we see a maximum | 0:06:27 | 0:06:32
percentage of companies looking at
increasing headcount. On the other | 0:06:32 | 0:06:35
hand we have mature economies of
Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea | 0:06:35 | 0:06:38
where the majority of the companies
are looking at replacing turnover | 0:06:38 | 0:06:45
rates. In terms of industries
outsourcing industries and | 0:06:45 | 0:06:51
information technology enabled
services are leading the pack, | 0:06:51 | 0:06:58
followed by high-tech. And we have
retail and real estate sectors where | 0:06:58 | 0:07:05
we are looking at a lot more hiring
being done, especially around the | 0:07:05 | 0:07:10
boost in infrastructure we see. So
if I wanted a big rise in my salary, | 0:07:10 | 0:07:15
we should I move to? For 2018,
countries with the highest forecast | 0:07:15 | 0:07:24
for salary increases are,
surprisingly, Bangladesh. Myanmar | 0:07:24 | 0:07:27
and India. All three of them are
forecast 10% salary increases. And | 0:07:27 | 0:07:36
many have Sri Lanka at about 9%. It
depends on how adventurous you would | 0:07:36 | 0:07:42
like to be but I think those are the
top three in terms of salary | 0:07:42 | 0:07:46
increase forecast is. Continuing our
feature on driverless cars. | 0:07:46 | 0:07:50
Yesterday we showed our driver
enjoying a 3-D movie inside one. | 0:07:50 | 0:07:55
Today will show you how car
manufacturers are taking some | 0:07:55 | 0:07:58
control away from the driver to
improve safe the. Research into | 0:07:58 | 0:08:07
collision avoidance systems are
being done. We check them out. | 0:08:07 | 0:08:11
Proper driverless cars will not be
on the market for a few years yet | 0:08:16 | 0:08:21
there are already automated systems
which are there to improve safety | 0:08:21 | 0:08:24
and are fitted to cars you can
purchase today. To find out a little | 0:08:24 | 0:08:29
more, we borrowed this car, a
state-of-the-art production vehicle | 0:08:29 | 0:08:33
and a crash test dummy. What we will
do is turn right into the path of a | 0:08:33 | 0:08:38
car coming towards us. Normally that
would cause a serious accident but | 0:08:38 | 0:08:42
let's see what happens. Ooh! That is
quite violent. But we did not hit | 0:08:42 | 0:08:59
the car coming in the opposite
direction. It is easy to see how | 0:08:59 | 0:09:02
that improve safety. There is
another system now to try and this | 0:09:02 | 0:09:06
time I will do the driving. | 0:09:06 | 0:09:10
What we are going to do now is try
out an automatic braking system. | 0:09:20 | 0:09:24
That involves trying to drive into
the back of a car in front. Not | 0:09:24 | 0:09:28
happy about it but let's try. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:33
I want to put the brakes on but I
will not. Ooh the car gave me an | 0:09:39 | 0:09:51
audible warning and showed me a
lashing light and in the brakes came | 0:09:51 | 0:09:56
on, the seatbelt tensioned and it
brought us to a controlled halt. | 0:09:56 | 0:10:00
Take care out there. A quick look
now at the markets and Asia is | 0:10:00 | 0:10:06
continuing its new year games. The
All Ordinaries up by 4.6 points and | 0:10:06 | 0:10:10
in Japanese market is currently at a
three decade high. The broader | 0:10:10 | 0:10:18
benchmark is at a level not seen
since 1991. This is after Wall | 0:10:18 | 0:10:24
Street finished again at a record
high overnight. Thank you for | 0:10:24 | 0:10:28
investing with us. Sport Today is
