Japan's economy keeps growing but is
it running out of steam? All the | 0:00:18 | 0:00:22
latest GDP numbers are up next. And
could your DNA be the key to finding | 0:00:22 | 0:00:29
your true love? A new matchmaking

Japan's latest economic figures have
just been released. Its GDP grew by | 0:00:53 | 0:00:59
half a percent in the last three
months of 2017 compared to the same | 0:00:59 | 0:01:04
quarter a year earlier. The numbers
were a little softer than expected. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:11
It is the eighth straight quarter of
expansion for Japan's economy. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:20
Earlier, we were told why the
economy is building strength. There | 0:01:20 | 0:01:29
are some seasonality, some
volatility but the big issue is, for | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
the first time in 30 years, it's 30
years, you've got wages, jobs, the | 0:01:32 | 0:01:38
quality of jobs are improving so the
overall environment for consumption | 0:01:38 | 0:01:44
is now a positive one. While over
the last 30 years, it was a negative | 0:01:44 | 0:01:50
one. That's the key point that was
driving the steady expansion of | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
Japan. In the financial markets,
there is one word that is making | 0:01:53 | 0:02:01
investors shake in their boots right
now. Inflation. It is the benchmark | 0:02:01 | 0:02:06
which measures how quickly prices
for goods and services increase but | 0:02:06 | 0:02:10
investors think inflation is on the
rise and they expect several banks | 0:02:10 | 0:02:14
will raise the cost of borrowing to
cool down the economy. Basri's | 0:02:14 | 0:02:20
wildfires -- while Dwyer was caused
by expectations that a strong US | 0:02:20 | 0:02:24
economy would lead to more rate
rises. Later today, the US | 0:02:24 | 0:02:29
government releases its consumer
Price number. I asked Peter McGuire | 0:02:29 | 0:02:33
what he thinks the numbers will
show. We are expecting to see a | 0:02:33 | 0:02:38
decline for core and CPI rates to
1.9 and 1.7 respectively, down from | 0:02:38 | 0:02:46
2.1 and 1.8. We are expecting to see
a downturn in those inflation | 0:02:46 | 0:02:51
numbers. It is a wait and see
approach. If we don't see a downturn | 0:02:51 | 0:02:58
but arise, which is something market
analysts do not expect, could this | 0:02:58 | 0:03:06
bring back market mayhem? It
probably could, there is no doubting | 0:03:06 | 0:03:12
that. The market is very centred on
a fall in those particular inflation | 0:03:12 | 0:03:16
numbers. If we do see a rise,
volatility will pick up and we could | 0:03:16 | 0:03:20
see a return to what we experienced
last week. That will be naturally | 0:03:20 | 0:03:25
across all markets, taking on board
Asia. But if the number is what you | 0:03:25 | 0:03:34
expect to be lower than the previous
month, could this calm down the | 0:03:34 | 0:03:40
markets and clear the way for more
gains. Certainly the other side as | 0:03:40 | 0:03:45
far as what the Fed is prepared to
do. The market is tipping we will | 0:03:45 | 0:03:51
seek to rate rises or possibly three
and it's all stemming from inflation | 0:03:51 | 0:03:56
numbers. You expect two, three or
four rate hikes this year, from the | 0:03:56 | 0:04:09
US Central Bank, when will be the
first one? The next 60 days, | 0:04:09 | 0:04:14
something by April. You may see it
sooner. Just depends what they are | 0:04:14 | 0:04:20
prepared to do as far as voting for
it. Ratcheting it up relatively | 0:04:20 | 0:04:25
quickly. And then that mindset, as
far as do they introduce that bird | 0:04:25 | 0:04:31
rate rise later in the year?

bitter irony on Valentine's Day | 0:04:52 | 0:05:00
because there is no love lost

Just a few years ago, when the oil
price started to slump, because | 0:06:23 | 0:06:28
global demand weakened, like the
American trucking industry which is | 0:06:28 | 0:06:32
based mainly in Texas and New
Mexico, it was on its last legs | 0:06:32 | 0:06:36
because it could no longer be
profitable. What's happened since is | 0:06:36 | 0:06:40
they have gotten more efficient.
Lots of cost-cutting measures and | 0:06:40 | 0:06:44
loads of tracking sites have come
back on line and this has led to a | 0:06:44 | 0:06:48
huge glut in supply. It's quite good
news for America. We saw a shipment | 0:06:48 | 0:06:54
of oil from the US to the UAE and
the Middle East. The topsy-turvy | 0:06:54 | 0:07:00
energy market. What's not good is
the supply is higher than the | 0:07:00 | 0:07:03
demand. There are still quite of
pressure on energy prices and oil | 0:07:03 | 0:07:08

personal preferences. And while
experts agree on line dating is good | 0:08:19 | 0:08:23
for over an -- widening the pool, is
this the solution to finding Mr or | 0:08:23 | 0:08:30
Mrs Wright? The research is now
clear that using individual level | 0:08:30 | 0:08:37
information for personality, values
and preferences, to try to predict | 0:08:37 | 0:08:41
who will be compatible in the
future, is a losing game. You might | 0:08:41 | 0:08:45
just set up people who are similar
to them. It is a reasonable | 0:08:45 | 0:08:50
hypothesis but no one has the able
to find consistent evidence that | 0:08:50 | 0:08:53
