Prime Minister, saying it
would safeguard jobs and living | 0:00:00 | 0:00:02
Now on BBC News, all the latest
business news live from Singapore. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:07
Day two of the world mobile Congress
in Barcelona. We find out what they | 0:00:15 | 0:00:21
have to say about the US ban on its
product. New Zealand public finance | 0:00:21 | 0:00:26
minister tells us what the GBP would
mean for the best TPB would mean for | 0:00:26 | 0:00:30
the country's economy. Good morning,
Asia, and hello world. Clad you | 0:00:30 | 0:00:40
could join us for this edition of
Asia business report. It is Tuesday, | 0:00:40 | 0:00:43
and I am Rico he's on. We start off
with the world mobile Congress in | 0:00:43 | 0:00:49
Barcelona today, and American
politicians have been accused of | 0:00:49 | 0:00:54
barring the company from the US
market for commercial reasons. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:58
Operators have been warned from
stalking him, mobile phones over | 0:00:58 | 0:01:05
concerns that the company is too
close to the Chinese government. The | 0:01:05 | 0:01:08
firm insists it's independent that
it's mobile boss told Rory Katlyn | 0:01:08 | 0:01:12
Jones that they have big ambitions,
whatever happens in America. Every | 0:01:12 | 0:01:20
year, we have strong growth, every
year. We have a chance to be number | 0:01:20 | 0:01:25
one, not far away. You think you can
be number 11 date with global | 0:01:25 | 0:01:31
smartphones? For sure. We have a
chance. What are the problems with | 0:01:31 | 0:01:35
you achieving that, trying to get
into the United States market. You | 0:01:35 | 0:01:40
are nowhere in the Dutch in the
united states market because | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
American politicians do not trust
you. Why do you think that is? | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
Because some guy, some political
things are trying to keep us out | 0:01:46 | 0:01:53
because we are too competitive. We
have leading technology, so they | 0:01:53 | 0:01:59
worry about that, we are too strong.
Is that why American politicians | 0:01:59 | 0:02:03
want to keep you out, because you
are too competitive, or they worry | 0:02:03 | 0:02:07
that you are too close to the
Chinese government? They are trying | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
to say that, but we are actually
independent of the company, so those | 0:02:10 | 0:02:18
political things, to keep us out...
You are one of the leading Chinese | 0:02:18 | 0:02:23
companies in advancing artificial
intelligence. Is China going to be a | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
superpower in AI? One of the things
you are showing off this week is a | 0:02:26 | 0:02:37
car with a phone in it, which is
basically making the autonomous car | 0:02:37 | 0:02:42
work. What are you trying to
demonstrate there? We are | 0:02:42 | 0:02:47
demonstrating AI capability on a
smartphone, how AI on a smartphone | 0:02:47 | 0:02:51
is really amazing. It is not smart
enough, the smartphone, and we hope | 0:02:51 | 0:02:59
that in the future, and AIA
smartphone to be an intelligent | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
phone. What is your prediction in
five years from now, will you | 0:03:02 | 0:03:07
dominate the mobile phone industry,
and will it be in an American market | 0:03:07 | 0:03:11
in a significant way? I think both.
We can be number one globally. He | 0:03:11 | 0:03:23
was speaking to Rick Allen Jones. A
recent government report says New | 0:03:23 | 0:03:28
Zealand could see $4 billion added
to the economy with a revised | 0:03:28 | 0:03:33
transpacific partnership kicks in
later this year. Let us -- that is | 0:03:33 | 0:03:37
welcome news for the New Zealand
economy, where growth is inspected | 0:03:37 | 0:03:39
to slow out -- slow donated this
year. Earlier I spoke to the country | 0:03:39 | 0:03:44
-- company's new finance minister, I
asked him if the TPB would make a | 0:03:44 | 0:03:48
difference to the country's bottom
line. I think the countries that | 0:03:48 | 0:03:52
have stayed the course with New
Zealand, Canada, Chile, countries | 0:03:52 | 0:03:56
like that, Singapore, they know that
there are good benefits for them in | 0:03:56 | 0:04:00
this agreement. An actual effect for
some countries, the US withdrawal | 0:04:00 | 0:04:04
means is area is easier to sign up
other areas. Buffer New Zealand, we | 0:04:04 | 0:04:10
are a small country, a trading
nation, and we need agreements like | 0:04:10 | 0:04:12
this to grow our prosperity. But if
the United States was of the TPP, | 0:04:12 | 0:04:17
this should be adding a lot more
cash into the coffers. Do you think | 0:04:17 | 0:04:24
President Trump will ever change his
mind and rejoin TPP? That is very | 0:04:24 | 0:04:28
difficult to know the answer, but
what we are pleased about is a good | 0:04:28 | 0:04:32
quality agreement has been signed by
11 countries. If the US wants to | 0:04:32 | 0:04:36
come back and to the agreement at
some point in the future, that | 0:04:36 | 0:04:39
remains possible, but we have an
agreement that will open up access | 0:04:39 | 0:04:43
to markets for our exporters and
service providers, as it will for | 0:04:43 | 0:04:47
other countries. It is a high
quality agreement now, and New | 0:04:47 | 0:04:50
Zealand is proud to be a part of
the. There is lots of talk will be | 0:04:50 | 0:04:54
-- that the UK will be interested in
joining the revised TPP after | 0:04:54 | 0:05:00
Brexit, are they welcomed? All
countries who want to be part of the | 0:05:00 | 0:05:04
agreement are welcome to be there.
We have to get it signed obviously | 0:05:04 | 0:05:08
and ratified first, but New Zealand
is looking forward to discussing | 0:05:08 | 0:05:12
with the UK a possible trade
agreement. It is important for New | 0:05:12 | 0:05:17
Zealand to develop agreements with
the EU following Brexit, both are | 0:05:17 | 0:05:23
important markets for our exporters.
Let's look at the New Zealand | 0:05:23 | 0:05:26
economy, the new government is
taking a tough stance towards | 0:05:26 | 0:05:31
immigration and property purchases
by foreigners. Would this second -- | 0:05:31 | 0:05:35
impact economic growth? But we have
had for the last nine years is a | 0:05:35 | 0:05:39
major housing crisis. New Zealand
has had high homeownership rates in | 0:05:39 | 0:05:43
the past, we are many tens of
thousands of houses were of all we | 0:05:43 | 0:05:49
need. So part of what we have done
is put in some new rules and | 0:05:49 | 0:05:53
criteria around existing residential
housing, similar to the rules in | 0:05:53 | 0:05:58
Australia, and we are putting them
in place now to ensure that New | 0:05:58 | 0:06:00
Zealanders can buy their own homes.
What we still want our people coming | 0:06:00 | 0:06:05
from countries around the world to
invest in building new housing and | 0:06:05 | 0:06:10
supporting us to build our
infrastructure. We very much need | 0:06:10 | 0:06:12
that kind of investment. It was New
Zealand's finance Minister Greg | 0:06:12 | 0:06:18
Roberson. China's top economic
adviser of drives into the USA today | 0:06:18 | 0:06:22
to try to smooth tensions between
the two countries over trade. | 0:06:22 | 0:06:28
Discussions between the White House
will take place as President Trump | 0:06:28 | 0:06:32
continues this considers new tariffs
on Chinese steel imports. So what | 0:06:32 | 0:06:39
kind of reception can he expect? Is
likely to be quite frosty because we | 0:06:39 | 0:06:45
have seen increasingly tough talk on
both sides. Not just that, on the US | 0:06:45 | 0:06:51
side of talks, we have Robert light,
who is known to be a China hawk, | 0:06:51 | 0:06:56
meaning he is very aggressive in the
stance towards China, and trying to | 0:06:56 | 0:07:01
address trade imbalances. The US
side, the trust and believes there | 0:07:01 | 0:07:04
has been more talk about reform and
not enough action to the dish to | 0:07:04 | 0:07:07
address the fact that China has a
huge trade surplus with America, and | 0:07:07 | 0:07:11
they want to narrow that. Now the
man traveling is hopefully the right | 0:07:11 | 0:07:16
person to smooth over -- over these
tensions, because he is very senior. | 0:07:16 | 0:07:19
He is a trained at Harvard
economist, he is also a very trusted | 0:07:19 | 0:07:23
confidant of President seizing ping,
and China's annual meeting, he is | 0:07:23 | 0:07:30
inspected to be promoted to vice
Senior Premier. According to | 0:07:30 | 0:07:36
Reuters, he is also the front runner
to be the next governor of China's | 0:07:36 | 0:07:40
Central Bank after the current
governor -- Governor retires. There | 0:07:40 | 0:07:43
is a lot more for him destined to
discuss, including the possibility | 0:07:43 | 0:07:48
of the US putting new tariffs on
Chinese steel, as well as this fight | 0:07:48 | 0:07:53
over intellectual property practices
in China. So lots for them to talk | 0:07:53 | 0:07:56
about. China and the US are always
at loggerheads in many ways -- | 0:07:56 | 0:08:01
issues. They you for the update. A
few years ago, it was revealed that | 0:08:01 | 0:08:07
North Korea had just a handful of
websites, and minimal | 0:08:07 | 0:08:12
infrastructure. A new report from
cyber security firm fire eyes | 0:08:12 | 0:08:16
suggests that has not stopped the
country from making trouble. | 0:08:16 | 0:08:19
Business reporter Monica Miller
spoke to Bryce Bolton, the firm's | 0:08:19 | 0:08:23
Asia-Pacific -- chief officer, who
told her the hackers from the hermit | 0:08:23 | 0:08:29
state are becoming more
sophisticated. You do not need to | 0:08:29 | 0:08:33
have a massive investment in
informational warfare to be very | 0:08:33 | 0:08:36
effective. In North Korea, to
recognize that a decade ago, and | 0:08:36 | 0:08:41
started investigate that investing
in their cyber warfare. What we're | 0:08:41 | 0:08:45
seeing today is the fruits of their
investment. Are there third parties | 0:08:45 | 0:08:49
involved? Are the North Koreans
working with another country or | 0:08:49 | 0:08:53
individuals or corporations to make
this all happened? It is clear that | 0:08:53 | 0:08:56
they are able to learn from what
other countries have been doing, and | 0:08:56 | 0:09:02
they have had relationships in the
past with China and Russia, and they | 0:09:02 | 0:09:05
may well be also using relationships
with ironic, also an emerging cyber | 0:09:05 | 0:09:12
power over the last few years. You
are describing something that flies | 0:09:12 | 0:09:16
under the radar, it if it is tough
to detect, what are signs that your | 0:09:16 | 0:09:21
computer has been impacted. Today,
you have two modes of operation for | 0:09:21 | 0:09:29
attackers, a targeted attack going
under the radar to steal information | 0:09:29 | 0:09:31
that could be used for your
advantage in informational warfare, | 0:09:31 | 0:09:35
but we also now have crypto
currencies, creating a massive | 0:09:35 | 0:09:41
opportunity for countries like North
Korea to extract value from | 0:09:41 | 0:09:45
computers anywhere in the world,
they can turn this computers into | 0:09:45 | 0:09:50
crypto currency minors, and use
those to extract money from the | 0:09:50 | 0:09:55
compute power that they have
co-opted. There is a term for this | 0:09:55 | 0:09:59
called crypto jacking, and it is
becoming a new nuisance for | 0:09:59 | 0:10:04
organizations, and what you are
seeing with crypto jacking is your | 0:10:04 | 0:10:07
CPU system will... That is
relatively easy to find and easy to | 0:10:07 | 0:10:12
stop. Let's look at the Asian stock
markets, currently all headed north. | 0:10:12 | 0:10:26
After major gains on Wall Street
overnight. Thank you so much for | 0:10:26 | 0:10:29
investing your time with us, I am
